Sounds like the sequel to a monster movie. The Portage County Business Council just learned that our area was selected as one of four statewide regional sites to host a HATCH event this fall. This year, for the first time, it will culminate with a statewide finale in Madison in November. The four regional and maybe a wildcard or two, will advance to Madison.

To give a brief history for those of you who might have been hiding under a rock or not a part of this awesome community, the Brightstar WI Foundation (www.brightstarwi.org) brought HATCH to central Wisconsin in 2017. Our community along with Wisconsin Rapids, Marshfield and Wausau put together local events with a regional finale. Last year they added the Chippewa Valley and southeastern Wisconsin.

According to the Brightstar WI Foundation, “HATCH is a community-based startup pitch platform that helps develop ‘napkin’

ideas into early-stage companies and acts as a pre-seed funding tool that encourages those with a bright idea to consider developing or advancing those ideas into business plans. HATCH is produced by BrightStar Wisconsin Foundation. We don’t restrict the type of idea you can submit, but it’s important to remember we are looking for high-growth ideas that have scale.”

Recently, Brightstar WI Foundation announced that one of several early-stage companies they are funding came out of a HATCH competition. So not only do the winners receive local cash prizes, there are opportunities to receive funding from the Brightstar WI Foundation. It might not be too long before a local HATCH business makes that big step. Specifically in our region, Midwest Wealth Ventures (www.midwestwealthventures.com) is a PCBC member that has been working with HATCH businesses

to continue to move them forward. These are just a couple examples of the tremendous opportunity that awaits the participants.

Every HATCH event is hosted in a unique location that distinctly showcases the community in which the event is located. Last year, John and Patty Noel and Compass Properties were kind enough to host our regional finale. It was held in the Noel Car Barn, an incredible venue, not surprising, knowing that John and Patty were and continue to be exceptional entrepreneurs. We had around 200 people in attendance and heard some great pitches. All of central Wisconsin was represented. Past events have been held at Eron’s Event Barn, the Noel Hangar and our Historic Firehouse No. 2 (thanks to the Portage County Historical Society).

“The rules are simple. At HATCH, presenters have five minutes to pitch in front of judges and a live audience for the chance to win cash and be selected to move on. The audience has a chance to evaluate and gets one total vote for their favorite idea alongside the judges. Beyond the prize money, this is the chance to get the business idea that has been rattling around in your head, out in front of a supportive investors, businesses, and community members. HATCH events are fun, highly social and inspirational.”

Please watch this digital magazine and social media for further updates. Start hatching those great ideas and work on your pitches!

Guest Speaker: Shannon K. Semmerling

Title of Presentation: “Choice. You Have the Power”

About the Program: Every day is a new adventure with endless opportunities to either thrive or dive, and sometimes both in the same 24-hours. The choices you make throughout the day, from the very moment you wake, can determine the fun or fight you’ll have with each oncoming wave.

Shannon, an eternal optimist, knows this well. Encouraged from a young age to make choices, and taught to be responsible for those choices, as Shannon’s world expanded with age and experience she further learned there is power and freedom in choice. She has enjoyed the positive impact that can be realized when choosing with intention.

Choice is a freedom that every person possesses. Through her choices, words and actions, Shannon is living her mission – ‘make connections and bring joy’. In doing so, she’s inspired others to see that the life you lead, like the business you’re growing, is shaped by the many choices you make.

Take-aways:• True North is more than a compass setting.

Be pointed toward helpful resources to clarify your purpose.

• Language matters. Learn words that inspire and how to wear them.

• PBR is not just a hipster beverage. Feel why in just 60-seconds.

• Every single person has a story. Draw out a new friend’s in your first meeting.

About our Speaker: Shannon K Semmerling is an eternal optimist; by choice. She is also a public relations practitioner, community advocate, and yoga instructor.

Connected, for good, Shannon has led communications for organizations in athletics, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, non-profit and retail industries. In 2014, she established Ask Shannon PR, LLC, an independent practice that provides clients with public relations and strategic communication services. A registered yoga teacher (200RYT) since 2018, she also now guides students of varying experience through classes that help contribute to more connected lives – on and off the yoga mat.

Interested in learning more? Ask Shannon.

About the Event: An opportunity for women in the Central Wisconsin area to network, talk about issues that affect their daily professional lives, learn something new and have fun doing it. This event will include a lunch, swag bag, door prizes and networking. A 50/50 raffle will also be played. This event is open to the public.

Plated Luncheon includes: Pork Stir Fry with carrot, onion, and mushroom, Jasmine Rice, freshly baked rolls, delicious dessert, and Iced Tea & Coffee/Tea/Milk. (Vegetarian or Gluten Free Options available upon request.)

What is the Business X-Change? A roundtable presentation which allows business owners and their employees the opportunity to discuss pertinent topics, learn from local industry leaders and, most importantly, learn from each other. Business X-Change meets regularly throughout the year from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. at the Portage County Business Council office.

You are invited to attend our June X-Change. Wednesday, June 12, 2019 | 7:30am – 8:30am• Please Click Here to register or call our office at 715-344-1940• Portage County Business Council, Foundation Conference Room • While there is no cost to attend, the value of the information may be priceless• Continental Breakfast Provided

Topic: “Cross Train Your Brain” About the Program: Studies have shown that many Americans dread the prospect of declining brain function with aging. In this presentation we will discuss normal age-related changes in brain function as well as pathological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and vascular dementia. Modifiable risk factors for these pathological conditions will be identified, and specific recommendations will be provided in order to reduce these risks. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementias, research continues to be promising for the impact of lifestyle choices for risk reduction. This presentation will cover some of the latest research and steps you can take to insure YOUR brain is healthy for a lifetime.

In this X-Change you’ll learn:• Identify the basics of the human brain.• Identify normal versus pathological changes associated with brain aging.• Name the six dimensions of wellness and how they relate to healthy brain function.• Identify recent research findings related to brain healthy lifestyle.• Provide resources to create and apply a personal plan to cross-train your BRAIN!
