Child care providers are responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the children in their care. Providers need to know how to respond quickly and calmly in an emergency. The purpose of an emergency plan is to specify how you and your staff will protect children during a disaster or emergency. While your emergency plan should be detailed enough to address all possible events, it should not be so complex that parents and staff will have difficulty remembering the necessary steps when a disaster or emergency

arises. Also, since it is impossible to foresee every event that may occur, your emergency plan should be broad enough to cover a wide variety of situations.

If emergency plans are not used, they are useless. Make time to put into practice what your emergency plan outlines. Schedule monthly drills or practice sessions of different emergency scenarios and modify plans accordingly. You may also want to rehearse evacuation procedures with the children and inform parents about these procedures so they know where to go and whom to contact when a disaster or emergency occurs.

Child care programs can provide safe and secure environments that help create stability in children’s lives during times of chaos and unpredictability. Provide opportunities for children to talk and share their feelings, listen to children’s concerns and provide honest, developmentally-appropriate answers.

The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers, and Twos: Connecting with Music and Movement

Teachers plan meaningful experiences by selecting materials that match children’s growing abilities and interests, by observing what children do, and by reflecting on those observations. Music and movement can be a joyful experience for young children, beginning at birth. When you rock babies to a gentle lullaby, sing a favorite song over and over, or dance around the room with children you share special moments. This training will give providers ideas to engage infants and toddlers in meaningful music and movement activities.

Practical Strategies to Build Resiliency in Children

Child Care Providers — Please copy this page and share with your families!FAMILY FOCUSGardening with Kids

Do you know somebody interested in becoming a child care provider? Have them call their local Child Care Resource & Referral Agency at 855-750-3343 for more information!

By Kris Nicholson, Child Care Aware® of Kansas, Project Coordinator

What better place to ‘grow’ special family memories than in a garden? Gardening with your kids or grandkids at home or at a community garden not only provides the tangible benefits of exercise and fresh food, it also fosters communication, builds strong relationships, and offers an opportunity to work towards a common goal1. Young children are thrilled to plant seeds and watch their plants sprout from the soil and grow into big plants! Having children grow and harvest the product themselves is a great way to get picky eaters to try new things!

Planting small seeds can be difficult and frustrating for young ones. Try planting seeds that are larger such as peas, beans, squash/pumpkin or cucumber. If

children want to plant tiny-seeded crops, such as carrots or homegrown lettuce, you can plant these by making homemade planting tapes ahead of time.

How to make Seed Tapes:• Cut strips of newspaper about 1” wide and 12” long.

• Mix up a thick paste of flour and water — have the kids help with this step.

• Dab a small amount of paste on the strip - spacing them according to seed package. • Place a single seed on top of each mound, pressing it in to anchor it. If your child is struggling to handle the small seeds, you can use tweezers to pick up and place seeds.

• Allow the paste to dry; then carefully roll the seed tapes up.

• Read the seed package to find out how deep you need to plant your seeds. Make a furrow at the depth listed on the

package.

• Show your child how to unroll the seed tape, lay it in the furrow, cover with soil and wait to see the seedlings emerge!

Do you have limited space for gardening? Try a community garden. Find out more about planning a community garden by going to www.letsmove.org. You can also research ideas on container gardening.

Kansas State Research and Extension has a presence in each and every county of Kansas. We encourage you to contact your local agent whenever

you have gardening questions. To locate your local office check - www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/stateandareamaps.html.
