Native to Mexico, these nutrient-rich seeds, known for sprouting green “fur” on kitschy pottery pets, have become all the rage among superfood seekers. And it’s no surprise—chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and calcium. If you’re not someone who eats a lot of fish, they’re a great way to get plant-based omega

Despite their relation to marijuana, hemp seeds contain virtually no trace of the psychoactive ingredient in their controversial cousin. The seeds are high in protein and contain all the essential amino acids needed for growth and repair. Hemp seeds also have a desirable ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and are a good source of amino acids, magnesium, and potassium.

BLACK garlic

Black garlic has long been prized by Asians for its health benefits, but it became widely available in Western markets only a few years ago. The black bulb is created by fermenting raw garlic through prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, giving it a sweet, mellow flavor and an inky hue. In addition to the sulfuric compounds that provide garlic with its heart-healthy and anticancer benefits,

the fermented cloves are a source of important probiotics. “Fermented foods help stabilize our intestinal flora. When the intestine is in good shape, it strengthens our immune system,” says Bellatti. Black garlic has been increasingly sought-after in high-end cuisine, and it is often used to make sauces, dressings, and dips.Available at health-food stores and online; try thespicehouse.com.

The evolution of 3D printers and their rising popularity

THE EVOLUTION OF The 3d printer

It seems as if just yesterday, we were discussing 3D printers with wonder and awe as they were revealed to the public for the first time. The first model any of us probably saw at that point was most likely one that had been made in the 80s--a large, bulky, archaic piece of something about the size of an office printer, or maybe even your refrigerator. After about a month or two, half of us completely forgot about it; by us, I mean consumers like you and I. For businesses and corporations alike, this was another opportunity to make some big money, so they got to thinking. Could they produce a more simple version of this industrial sized 3D printer that Americans would even consider actually putting in their homes and offices? How could they normalize something so large? While we moved on to smaller and better things, such as wearable technology, lots of people set out to perfect this large, bulky printer.

Page 13: May2014

Not only has the popularity of the 3D printer bloomed, it is expected to blossom and spread by a whopping 200% by next year! Already having built the world’s largest 3D printers capable of building titanium alloy structures such as satellite and rocket parts, China is reportedly “on track” to becoming the largest 3D printing nation by 2016, replacing its 40 year record of leading human labor manufacturing with a new one. According to economics and business correspondent, John Aziz, Cheaper foreign labor can be replaced by robots, 3D printers, and other types of automation which will offer little comfort to Western and American workers who have been displaced by foreign manufacturing, or young people coming into the labor force today who cannot find jobs — but it's the trend we're seeing nonetheless. 3D printing, just like a lot of other modern technologies are quietly gaining traction in more advanced countries such as Europe and Asia. These printers are expected to replace a lot of human labor in the future. However, consumers are questioning the efficiency and price of these printers. Why do we need them? Is it really worth over $1,000? Tell us what you think on our website! Would you purchase one? Why or why not?
