Following the ban on Pražský výběr, the guitarist and composer Michal Pavlíček formed a trio (with the bassist Guma Kulhánek and the drummer Klaudius Kryšpín) for the Jazz Praha ´85 festival. It turned out that the group functioned very well and once it had been extended to include the keyboard player Vendula Kašpárková, the vocalist Bára Basiková, the permanent guest Vilém Čok and the alternating bassist Jiří Veselý, a new musical phenomenon came to life. The present 2 LP set contains the original combination of live and studio recordings and 3 bonuses to boot. Stromboli proved the effectiveness of blending the echoes of jazz-rock fusion, robustly supplemented with ferocious guitar sounds, spherical, as well as almost metal rock, passages for instruments and vocals, keyboard and guitar synthesisers, supported by translated Morgenstern poems and newly written lyrics. Aladin, Já ti dávám, dávám (I Give You, Give You), Carmen, Veliké lalula (Great Lalulah), Košilela, Ivanhoe and Ó hory, ó hory (Oh Mountains, Oh Mountains) are just a few of the highlights. The bonus surprise is three recently discovered recordings made in 1987: the concert performances of the compositions Villa Ada, Houpací židle na opuštěné terase (Rocking Chair On A Deserted Terrace) and Dvě lahve (Two Bottles) thus offer an interesting comparison between Stromboli’s studio and stage work. A quarter of a century since their first release, all the recordings have now been remastered in state-ofthe- art studios. Original photographs and newly acquired period pictures stand out in a digipak brightening up the austere artwork of the double album and the long-unavailable double CD from 1995. This first item in Stromboli’s discography will always remain a living testimony to clearly Czech yet internationally comparable, formally complex but comprehensible to listen to music, replete with instrumental and vocal equilibristics, as well as an undiminished intensity of impression.

Excellent work was done in this respect by Vrkoslav and Zámostný from Olympic’s fan club (the additional pressings were put into universal graphic covers, entirely devoid of the magic of the original title’s artwork). The CD’s remastered sound corresponds to 2013 standards yet with regard to the original analogue patina. The booklet presents interesting documents from the archives, including several previously unpublished photos, comments on individual songs, pictures of the various LP and CD versions, and a concise text about the Želva phenomenon. BIS SACD 1778 Label Code 419 Price Code P FRENCH TRUMPET CONCERTOS Henri Tomasi: Concerto pour trompette et orchestre André Jolivet: Concertino pour trompette, orchestre à cordes et piano*; IIe Concerto pour trompette Robert Planel: Concerto pour trompette et orchestre à cordes Alfred Desenclos: Incantation, thrène et danse ARTISTS: Ole Edvard Antonsen, trumpet São Paulo Symphony Orchestra / Lan Shui; *Olga Kopylova, piano If the Baroque period may be regarded as a golden era for trumpet virtuosos, the centuries that followed proved far less glorious. Apart from its uses in military contexts, the trumpet was largely relegated to a secondary role, ‘confined’, as described by Hector Berlioz in 1844, ‘to the unworthy function of filling in, or made to sound two or three commonplace rhythmical formulae.’ This would however change in the 20th century, when the development of the valve trumpet had been accomplished, and the arrival of jazz reminded composers of the instrument’s potential. In France, where jazz enjoyed a greater influence on classical composers than perhaps anywhere else, there was a regular explosion of works for the instrument. And the importance of jazz is demonstrated by André Jolivet’s comment to the soloist who was to give the first performance of his Second Trumpet Concerto: ‘But, my dear fellow, Louis Armstrong is doing wonders in the top register. Why should this be impossible for a classical player?’ Celebrating the composers responsible for this renaissance for his instrument, Ole Edvard Antonsen has gathered five works composed between 1944 and 1966 – ranging from the colourful concerto by Henri Tomasi to Alfred Desenclos’ opulently orchestrated triptych Incantation, Threnody and Dance, and taking in Jolivet’s first attempt at a concertante piece for the trumpet: the Concertino for Trumpet (also known as ‘Trumpet Concerto No.1’), with string accompaniment and an important part for piano. Described as being ‘more than a virtuoso: a phenomenal artist’ in the French magazine Diapason, Ole Edvard Antonsen here receives expert support from the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, praised worldwide for colourful performances of great vitality of music by Hindemith, Richard Strauss and Villa-Lobos. BIS SACD 2012 Label Code 419 Price Code P RACHMANINOV – SYMPHONY NO. 1 & PIANO CONCERTO NO. 1 Sergei Rachmaninov: Symphony No.1 in D minor, Op.13 Piano Concerto No.1 in F sharp minor, Op.1 ARTISTS: Yevgeny Sudbin, piano, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Lan Shui Completed in 1891 and 1895 respectively, the Piano Concerto No.1 and the D minor Symphony were Sergei Rachmaninov’s first large-scale orchestral compositions, written by a young man still in his early 20s. The composer, whose self-critical vein was evident from the start, almost immediately decided to revise the concerto, even though he did choose to perform it in its original form when he made his London début as a pianist in 1899. Two years earlier, the symphony had been premièred, an event which has become notorious as one of music’s great disasters: the rehearsal time had been completely inadequate, and Glazunov, who conducted the work, was less than sympathetic to it – and may also have been drunk during the performance. The scathing reception caused Rachmaninov to doubt not only the quality of the work, but his own gifts as a composer, and he didn’t write anything of importance for three years. In 1917, he did revise the piano concerto, making use of the experience gained from having in the meantime composed the immensely successful 2nd and 3rd piano concertos and performing them numerous times himself. Rachmaninov also repeatedly expressed the wish to return to his first symphony, but the score was lost in the upheavals of the Russian revolution and the composer's move to the USA. Not until after his death in 1943 was a set of the original orchestral parts rediscovered. That Rachmaninov never forgot the work is however proven by the fact that he quoted it in his very last orchestral composition, the Symphonic Dances from 1940. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui have previously impressed critics worldwide with their performances of Rachmaninovs Second and Third Symphony, and are once again joined by the piano soloist Yevgeny Sudbin, with whom the team recently recorded what the reviewer in American Record Guide described as 'the most stunning performance of the Rhapsody [on a theme of Paganini] I’ve ever heard.'

BIS SACD 2024 Label Code 419 Price Code P HINDEMITH – VIOLIN CONCERTO AND SONATAS Paul Hindemith: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1939) * Sonata for Solo Violin, Op.31 No.2, ‘Es ist so schönes Wetter draußen’ Sonata in E flat for Violin and Piano, Op.11 No.1 ** Sonata in E for Violin and Piano (1935) ** Sonata in C for Violin and Piano (1939) ** ARTISTS: Frank Peter Zimmermann, violin, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Enrico Pace, piano. Paul Hindemith’s first instrument was the violin, and so thoroughly did he master it that he rose to become leader of the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra at the age of 19. Even if his focus soon shifted to the viola and to composing, he continued to play and to write for the violin, creating a series of works that fascinatingly mirror the various stages in the development of his musical language, from the vocabulary of late romanticism to the monumental, revivified Baroque idiom of his maturity. In a generous selection of these works, the eminent violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, who in 2010 was awarded the international Paul Hindemith Prize of the City of Hanau, makes an eloquent case for them, from the Sonata in E flat, composed in 1918 while Hindemith was still serving in the German army on the Western Front, to the strikingly emotional Violin Concerto of 1939, written during his first year of exile from Nazi Germany. Besides the masterly Sonata in C, composed shortly before the Concerto, and the tuneful 1935 Sonata in E, Zimmermann also includes the Solo Sonata, Op.31 No.2, with its final movement a set of variations on a Mozart song. In the accompanied sonatas Zimmermann enjoys the support of a regular chamber music partner, the pianist Enrico Pace, whereas in the concerto he teams up with Paavo Järvi, another recipient of the Paul Hindemith Prize and principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Together they convey an unusually colourful, shimmering and passionate image of Paul Hindemith, in a commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the composer. BIS SACD 2041 Label Code 419 Price Code P J.S. BACH – SECULAR CANTATAS, VOLUME 3 Johann Sebastian Bach: Durchlauchtster Leopold, BWV 173a (Serenata) Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten, BWV 202 (Wedding Cantata) Schwingt freudig euch empor…, BWV 36c Wedding Quodlibet, BWV 524 (Fragment) ARTISTS: Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki, Joanne Lunn, soprano, Hiroya Aoki, counter-tenor, Makoto Sakurada, tenor, Roderick Williams, baritone. Although two of the works on this disc were composed for weddings, they are completely different in character. Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten is a charming and gracious garland of recitatives and arias for soprano solo in which Spring, Flora, Apollo and Amor are all invoked in a blessing of the newly wedded couple and their union. The Quodlibet (Latin for ‘what pleases’) on the other hand, is an altogether unceremonious composition which was probably intended for a private function in Bach’s own circle or family. All we have is a fragment of the work – in Bach’s own hand – and the beginning and ending of the piece, including the title page, are missing. It is therefore not even certain that it is Bach’s own work, but may have been a collaboration between several of the wedding guests. Compositions of this kind belong to a tradition which combines quotations from songs, toasts, market traders’ calls, proverbs and puns, and were especially popular at weddings – where they frequently got out of hand! The third disc in Bach Collegium Japan’s series of secular cantatas also includes a birthday cantata composed in the honour of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen, Bach’s employer during years 1717–23. Durchlauchtster Leopold (‘Most illustrious Leopold’) celebrates the ‘propitious day’ while extolling the ruler’s ‘excellent attributes’ and ‘princely renown’. Two duets in minuet form lend the work the character of a courtly serenade, which didn’t stop Bach from reusing it, with a new text, as a church cantata a few years later. The name of the recipient of Schwingt freudig euch empor, another congratulatory cantata, is no longer known, but the text tells us that he was a teacher of high standing and of an advanced age. Once again Bach, who must have been attached to the work, reused it as a church cantata, but also, with the new title Steigt freudig in die Luft, as a birthday tribute to Charlotte Friederike of Anhalt-Köthen, the wife of Prince Leopold.

If the wind quintet genre has its origins in the early 19th century, it was during the 20th that it came of age. The possibilities that the combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn offered in terms of sounds and musical character were exploited to the full by composers such as Carl Nielsen, Paul Hindemith and Darius Milhaud. Once the ensemble had become firmly established, it also became common practice to add instruments, or to vary the timbres in other ways. In his Septuor, Charles Kœchlin included not only an alto saxophone but also a cor anglais, the same instrument that Heitor Villa-Lobos replaced the (French) horn with in the Quintette en forme de Chôros. One of the most extreme cases in the literature, however, is Hans-Werner Henze's L'autunno 'for five players of wind instruments', in which each player is required to perform on almost all the related instruments in the family of his main instrument, resulting in an instrumentarium ranging from piccolo flute to Wagner tuba and contrabassoon.

In the nine pieces there are still the art-rock repercussions, but added to the mix are a gleeful funky bass, Celtic undertones, multilayered and multicoloured guitar and Bára Basiková’s voice in various moods! What is essential is that it all holds together very well. The band’s original instruments are enriched by the possibilities of synthesisers and drum machines, while the core trio of Michal Pavlíček, Bára Basiková and Jiří Veselý is in individual compositions supported by other Stromboli members (Kryšpín, Seidl, Kašpárková, Dragoun) and guests (M. Vitouš, Zdeněk, Čok, etc.). The album’s magic is undoubtedly enhanced by Martin Němec’s lyrics, translated into English by Michael Žantovský and Ondřej Hejma. Michal Horáček acts in the role of narrator, author of two texts, as well as the accompanying word defining each song. Compared to the debut outing, it is a more integrated album in production terms, with a few tracks (Sandonorico, Scanners, Back In The Castle, Around The Fires…) firmly in the “top-notch late-80s pop” category. In part you can feel the spirit of Bára and Němec’s band Precedens, but above all the presiding influence of Pavlíček’s guitar compositions and arrangements, skilfully making use of various electrical gadgets. Although possibly a less breakthrough Czech rock apparition than the previous double LP, it is an album logically advancing all its participants into the 1990s. Sensitively remastered by Andy Lažo from the original tapes, in a digipak with additional photographs.

SUPRAPHON FL 6210 Label Code 332 Price Code C PRAZSKY VYBER - BER ARTISTS: Prazsky vyber One of the most fascinating Czech rock albums of the 1990s. Fifteen years after making the previous disc, Straka, listened to by their fans on copied tapes, and a decade from the beginning of the band’s official concerts, Čok, Kocáb, Kryšpín and Pavlíček got together again in the Sono studio (a splendid sound conjured up by Karlík and Cimfe) to record a dozen new songs. The traditional co-creators, Kocáb and Pavlíček, offered merely in part the traditional Pražský výběr eccentric material, with their musical and human experience, as well as co-operation with the lyricist Vlasta Třešňák, shifting things into an ironic or slightly melancholic post-revolution seriousness. Many may recall the video-supplemented hit Melem nemelem, všechno semelem, yet listening to the album as a whole is highly recommended: from the introductory, almost Southern bluesy Tož vem to ďas through the collectively heartfelt Ach jo, jak já jsem línej to the final Pavlíček guitar bonanza Stín, it contains more than fifty minutes of wonderful music. The live recording of Melem, nemelem…, made during last year’s concert tour, serves as proof that Pražský výběr’s 1997 pieces are still vital and well worth rediscovering on the new Supraphon CD re-edition. SUPRAPHON MD 6093 (2 CD SET) Label Code 333 Price Code MP PETR SKOUMAL - …SE NEZBLAZNI & POLOCAS ROZPADU ARTISTS: Petr Skoumal The distinguished Czech composer, lyricist and singer Petr Skoumal celebrated his 75th birthday on 7 March. To mark the occasion, Supraphon has given him a present in the form of a re-edition of two of his albums: ...SE NEZBLÁZNI & POLOČAS ROZPADU. In 1989 and 1990, great attention was drawn to Petr Skoumal’s two LPs, which have now been released in a 2-CD pack. They expressed his inner dissatisfaction with the outer atmosphere of the time, as well as the state of the artist’s soul – amorousness, love, humour, irony, aversion, disappointment, despair, nostalgia, sadness… On these albums, Petr Skoumal set to music several sets of lyrics written by his friends, yet the majority of the songs he conceived himself, with remarkable compositional and poetic invention. He was creating them during the course of the 1980s, without having any hope that he would be able to perform the bulk of them in public, since their veracity was unacceptable for those holding the reins of power at the time. Hence, all the more embraced were the songs when performed in houses and at secretly given concerts. The inspired timelessness of Skoumal’s songs has a chance to address contemporary listeners too, since they have lost none of their topicality. At the beginning of the 1990s, the two albums also appeared on CD, in a form more extended than that on the LPs. Supraphon’s 2-CD pack also contains bonuses – previously unreleased songs to Ivan Wernisch’s lyrics.
