From the Pastors

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of

bread and to prayer… 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts.

They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising

God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily

those who were being saved. -Acts 2:42, 46-47

Our 2019-20 Ministry Year Theme is “Everyday Blessings.” This year, we hope to take

inspiration from the example of the early followers of Jesus, following the helpful acronym,

BLESS. Each month, our newsletter will look at different letter of this acronym to see how it

might help guide our life together in the 21st century.

B - Begin with prayer. L - Listen. E - Eat. S - Serve. S - Share.

This month’s focus is:

B - Begin with prayer. 42 They devoted themselves… to prayer.

Do you pray for your neighbors? The last few months have seen many Bible studies and

sermons on prayer, but we too seldom talk about the important task of praying for others.

Praying for our neighbors is not normal. But few things are a better expression of the selfless

love and concern which Christians are encouraged to demonstrate.

It’s unusual, because praying for your neighbors—for their wellbeing, security, good-

fortune, or happiness—doesn’t get you anything. In fact, the happiness and success of our

neighbors is often a source of anxiety in modern American culture! How many times have

you looked longingly across the fence at a neighbor’s new car, or their new deck, or their

new roof? The desire to “Keep up with the Joneses” truly can make your neighbors’

success and happiness into a bitter thing.

But how would things be different if you regularly prayed for your neighbor? While prayer

may not completely eliminate all jealousy, that neighbor’s new car could become instead

an answer to prayer. Your neighbor’s happiness then is a reason to celebrate with them,

not envy them.

Prayer connects us with our neighbors. It tunes us into their needs and desires, as we learn

those needs and desires and lift them up in prayer. It helps us become more aware of who

they are. This makes us into better neighbors. It makes us better friends.

This month, I’m challenging myself to pray regularly for my neighbors—and not just for the

people who live next to me. I’ll pray for coworkers, the family which sits next to mine in the

restaurant, and for friends. I challenge you and your family to do the same. Let’s invigorate

our prayer life by praying for others. And let’s ask God to bless our relationships with those

people as well. Maybe, just maybe, people will say of us, “They devote themselves to

prayer.”

Congregational Study Begins October 19/20

We’re happy to announce that we’ve selected our 2019 Congregational Study, Vanishing

Grace by Philip Yancey. During the Congregational Study, we encourage the entire

congregation to join together in studying the Scriptures as we explore the topic through

weekly small group Bible studies and our worship services.

Lutherans are grace experts; we talk about grace all the

time. Philip Yancey challenges us to not only talk about

grace, but live it. Through this study, we will—as Hebrews

says—“consider how to stir up one another to love and

good works.”

Study group signups are on-going throughout October,

with the study formally starting Oct. 19th & 20th. If you

don’t see a group which fits your schedule, let us know...

or consider leading one! It’s not too late to sign up to be a

small group leader for Vanishing Grace.

Notable Anniversaries

During 2019-2020 a number of notable anniversaries have been or will be recognized and remembered.

The 75th anniversary of D-Day which began the Normandy Invasion of WW II was remembered this past

June 6th. We thank all those that have and are serving in our Armed Forces helping to keep us safe and

enjoy the freedoms that have come at such a high cost. Just recently we celebrated the 50th

anniversary of the first man on the moon on July 20. “That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for

mankind.” And of course we cannot forget the 100th anniversary of the start of the Chicago Bears.

As we begin this new school year we praise and thank God for the 70th anniversary of Calvary Lutheran

School. We celebrate God’s good gifts as He leads and directs this ministry for generation to generation.

What joy to know that over these 70 years thousands of children and their families along with hundreds of

teachers and staff have shared and heard the saving Word of God. We can only imagine the steps of

all those individuals have taken across the face of the earth proclaiming the Name of God the Father,

God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit in thought, word, and deed. We begin this new year with that

same conviction and heart as we seek to clearly see through the eyes of faith God’s will for our lives.

It is indeed a sincere joy to welcome you to our 70th school year. We are blessed to have the

opportunity to share this year with you and all the learning and growth that will take place. We ask

God’s blessings upon all that enter these doors.

First Quarter Completed

Our first quarter will be completed on Friday, October 4. Report cards will be distributed on Wednesday,

October 9. Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, 10/9 and Thursday, 10/10 from

Please note: Preschool PM 5 year old session will not meet on Friday, 10/11. Preschool Extended Care

sessions will close at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 11. No K-8 Afternoon Extended Care on 10/11.

Fall Break

School will not be in session on Monday, October 14 through Friday, October 18. This fall break matches

one week of Perry Township’s fall break. School will resume on Monday, 10/21.

Bible Quiz

Our Bible Quiz team will be competing in an academic competition at the Lutheran High School of

Indianapolis on Tuesday, October 22. The team has been studying the Old Testament Book of II Samuel.

They will answer questions on this book as they compete with the other Lutheran elementary schools in

the Indianapolis area. We thank Mrs. Faubion for her efforts as Bible Quiz coach. We thank the Lutheran

High School of Indianapolis for sponsoring this event.

Service Hour Program

Many hands have been used in service this school year. Over 1,000 service hours have already been

given in the work of our Lord at Calvary Lutheran Church and School. We thank all for their willingness to

serve as we provide for the needs of others. Many more tasks are needed to be completed. Please stop

by the church or school office to see a list of these service opportunities. Each week this list is emailed

with our Gazette.

SMILE SMILE SMILE—School Pictures

Wednesday, October 1-2. The majority of our students will have their picture taken on Tuesday. Tuesday

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?!

God has opened the doors to families who would not have considered Christian education opportunities

within their financial abilities. How are these doors being opened?

Scholarship Grant Organization Program [SGO]

Private and corporate funded mechanisms are in place providing tuition scholarships to qualified

families. All students are eligible for these scholarship grants. The same household income levels are

used for the Indiana vouchers and the scholarship tax credit program. Calvary Lutheran Church and

School has established our own Scholarship Tax Credit fund through The Lutheran SGO of Indiana, Inc.

Why should I consider donating to the Scholarship Grant fund?

Benefit #1: Each year Calvary Lutheran Church and School provided over $30,000.00 in scholarship

money to families unable to pay the entire tuition costs. Donating to the SGO fund has eliminated these

budgeted scholarships.

Benefit #2: All of your donated money comes right back to Calvary Lutheran Church and School.

Benefit #3: Students granted an SGO scholarship in 2019 will have it converted to an CHOICE Scholarship

Indiana voucher for the 2020/21 school year.

Benefit #4: 50% of your corporate or private donation is an Indiana state tax CREDIT. If your state tax

liability is less than your CREDIT, that CREDIT is extended for up to 9 years.

Currently, $65,500.00 is needed to fully fund the 29 scholarship grant applications. Please send in your

donation by December 31.

Please call the school office for further information. You are invited to visit www.lutheranSGO.org for

additional information. Donor forms are available in the school and church offices and on line.

Please prayerfully consider making a special thank and praise offering through the SGO scholarships as

we celebrate the 70th school year of Calvary Lutheran Church and School. Be sure to identify Calvary

Lutheran Church and School as the recipient of your donation.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child from Samaritan's Purse is a project that brings the Good

News of Jesus Christ to impoverished children in more than 100 countries through

gift-filled, shoe-box-sized Christmas boxes. Calvary's Older Adult Ministry is pleased to

be teaming up with CLS students again this year to support this worthwhile ministry.

Donations of small gifts to go inside these boxes are needed. Suggestions for gift

donations can be found below. The boxes are now furnished by Samaritan's Purse,

so shoe boxes are not needed. Please help us reach our goal of 185 boxes.

The boxes will be packed Thursday morning, November 21. Each student in Grades

K-4 will fill a box with gifts and an “All About Me” page with the assistance of an

older adult. Samaritan's Purse will add Christian materials to each box. Please bring your donations to the church by Sunday, November 17 and leave them in the bin in

the Narthex. More information about Operation Christmas Child can be found at

October 2019

October 6, 2019 – Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Psalm 62; 2 Timothy 1:1-14; Luke 17:1-10

“Spirit of Power” - Sermon Text: 2 Timothy 1:1-14 - Rev. Bill Mueller

God always gives what God’s people always need at the time it is always most effective.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of timidity but the Spirit of

Power. What does this mean? While it doesn’t mean we can leap tall buildings, it does

mean God does not desert us in the midst of extreme challenges. In fact, He is with us to

grow us in faith in Jesus.

October 13, 2019 – Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Psalm 111; 2 Timothy 2:1-10; Luke 17:11-19

“I’m Grateful” - Sermon Text: Luke 17:11-19 - Rev. Dr. Thomas Ahlersmeyer

“I’m Grateful” not only is the appropriate response all the blessings of body and soul given

to us by our great God, but it also has the power to change the lives of those around us

and even shape the world in which we live. An attitude of “I’m Grateful” is a gift from God

in response to the gifts of God, especially the “inexpressible Gift” of our Lord and Savior

Jesus Christ.

October 20, 2019 – Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Psalm 121; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Luke 18:1-8

“Total Protection” - Sermon Text: Psalm 121 - Rev. Dr. Walter Maier III

We live in a dangerous world. But Psalm 121 assures us that we have total protection from

God. The good news is that God guards us in all aspects of our life.

October 27, 2019 – Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost *Reformation Observed

Psalm 46; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36

“Trust in Jesus” - Sermon Text: John 8:31 - Rev. Dr. Lawrence Rast, Jr.

The Reformation was a miracle done purely by God’s grace, which returned the church’s

focus to faith in Jesus Christ. Today the church is struggling in the United States with

continuing decline. But that is nothing new, as John 8:31-26 shows us.

The basic message has been the same yesterday, today, and into

the future: Trust in Jesus.
