The Education Department has been going through quite a few changes over the past year. We have added new programs for children and adults, aligned our field trip programs to the Common Core Standards and have new additions to our department staff. Kristy Blakely joined the Gardens in 2012 as the Education Coordinator and was promoted when past Director of Education, Lynn Weiser, retired in June of last year. She has a B.S. from SUNY-ESF (The College of Environmental Science and Forestry) in Environmental and Forest Biology and a Masters in Science Education from Syracuse University. She also holds NYS Initial Certification in 7-12 Biology and has certification for Early Childhood Education. She loves plants and teaching others about science, so the Gardens was a perfect fit!

Jolene Bojar, the Education Coordinator was promoted from the Education Assistant position last July. She has a B.A. from University of Buffalo and received her Masters from Canisius. She holds NYS Initial Certification in 7-12 Mathematics with an extension for Grades 5-6. She is also involved in the community as a volunteer firefighter and EMT.

Mary Clark is the newest member of the Education Department staff. She was hired as our Education Assistant in November. She is a SUNY-ESF, alum as well! Mary has a B.S. and loves learning about plants ever since she took a Dendrology class in college. She loves working with kids and spending her days in a tropical plant paradise!

This new team has been very busy making sure school children have meaningful and memorable trips to the Gardens as well as adding new public programming. New additions include Science Cafés, Kids Day and Botany Camp.

This inside garden provides a place for safe, meaningful play and discovery as children of all ages and abilities explore the wonders of the plant world and the importance of eating healthy.

Gifts can celebrate marriages, births, retirements, anniversaries, or memorialize a beloved friend or family member. Tribute gifts made in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one are recognized with either a notification card sent to the honoree, or in the case of memorial gifts, sent to a family member or friend. Dedications can be given in memory of or in honor of a loved one, and a minimum gift amount is required.

Dedication gifts of $150 or more can be beautifully recognized at the Gardens with the purchase of a brick or paver in our Gardens. Additionally, we can offer donors the opportunity to…- Dedicate an existing shrub, tree or garden bed- Select an indoor or outdoor bench and create an inscribed dedication - Plant a new tree- Honoree’s name inscribed on a stone monument in our Peace Garden

Family Garden

Burchfield Botanicals at the Burchfield Penny Art Center. Between 1908 and 1911 Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967) created nearly 500 botanical sketches of different wildflowers and plants he found around his childhood home. Using books from the local library, he identified and documented these plants along with the locations where he found them. These sketches, which to a large extent predate the artist’s journals, are an important document of Burchfield’s early fascination with the natural world.

This exhibition, on view from June 13-November 9, features Burchfield masterworks which demonstrate the artist’s passion for nature, paired with the botanical sketches and objects from the Marchand Wildflower Collection at the Buffalo Museum of Science. Paul Marchand, well known throughout the world for his meticulous work, created “scientifically accurate and artistically superb casts of flowers and mushrooms.”

The exhibition is organized by the Burchfield Penney Art Center in collaboration with Garden Walk Buffalo, the Botanical Gardens, the Buffalo Museum of Science and the National Garden Festival. Visit www.BurchfieldPenney.org. *See Science Café: Illuminate on September 23
