President’s MessageMay 2017

The cold weather is a reminder to look after ourselves, in particular if you haven't yet had your flu injections now is the time. Our GP recommended to Sue and I that we also have a vaccination against shingles, it's usually free and a great alternative to this painful illness. I recall that Warren Ogborne mentioned last month that Jim McMillan was suffering from shingles.

On the 12th May I hosted, assisted by our current committee, the annual meeting of past Presidents and Vice Presidents.

We broke tradition by having a cocktail party at Totem and it resulted in a very glamorous and successful evening. My thanks to Vice President Helen who arranged a faultless night.

David Gulliford and Trevor Wallin are both doing great jobs in organising Heron Island and Hunter Valley short holidays.

Please support these initiatives. They are great value and you are guaranteed a memorable holiday with your Probian friends.

Apart from holidays, if you are yet to bowl with Lee, walk with Michael, lunch with David, go to our chosen musicals and theatres or get technical with Gavin then you are missing out on making great friends and having fun. Join in, by speaking or contacting the coordinators noted on the front page of this newsletter.

If you would like to contribute an article or story for publication in this  newsletter then you should contact our fantastic editor Ray Isaacs.

I look forward to seeing and chatting to you at our May meeting.

Welfare ReportBefore relating news re the health of our sick

members, I trust you’ve all seen your GP re your flu shots!!

As to our members … I’m afraid we lost Ron Sellin Friday last, May 12; condolences to Hazel and family. Peter Kendall has survived yet another heroic recovery from pneumonia in RNSH and has been transferred to Hirondel Nursing Home at Chatswood, and Helen Smith is back home, taking things quietly and edging slowly back to health.

GetawayDoyle’s on the Beach RestaurantTuesday, June 13

You are invited to enjoy a two-course fish lunch at Doyle's-on-the-Beach Restaurant beginning at noon on Tuesday, June 13. The plan is to meet at the Manly ferry wharf near the ticket booth in time to board the 10.45 ferry to Circular Quay where we will transfer to the ferry that goes at 11.35 am to Watson's Bay, arriving just in time to stroll the few metres to the restaurant.

Lunch will include a glass of wine, beer or soft drink on arrival, a bowl of seafood chowder and then a generous plate of fish and chips with salad. The lunch cost is $32 pp payable May meeting. A second glass of wine, beer etc, can be ordered at a discounted price for those who feel the thirst (pay separately to the waiter for that glass).

Please advise at time of payment if you have any special dietary requirements.

Cherry Blossom  FestivalAuburn Botanic GardensFriday, August 19-Sunday, August 27

The Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival will be held this   year from August 19 to August 27 at the Auburn Botanic Gardens.

It is proposed that  we  organise an outing  on Friday, August 25. Entry is $5 payable at the entrance. Depending   on   numbers, we will organise a bus leaving at 10 am, arriving about 11 am. Lunch will be at the Auburn Tennis Club next door   to   the gardens, at your cost. There  will a reasonable amount of walking as there no buggies available.

Please  advise   interest at the  next meeting and further details will be advised.

Northern Beaches HospitalTours of the new Northern Beaches Hospital will

recommence in October and we will be contacting the hospital in September to get dates for tours. As numbers per tour are restricted to 15 we will probably need 2 dates.

If you are interested in doing a tour of the hospital could you please advise David Gulliford by the end of August.

Hunter Valley 4 Day GetawayTuesday 3-Friday 6 OctoberActivity Co-ordinator Trevor Wallin

A 3 nights-4 day getaway to Pokolbin and the Upper Hunter Valley is being planned for October 3-6, 2017.

On day 1 we will travel by coach (beginning at about 9.30 am) from the Seaforth Bowling Club to the East Maitland Bowling Club where we will have lunch and a game of bowls, weather permitting. If the numbers warrant, we will also book tee times at a close-by golf club. Those who are not interested in playing or watching either sport will be transported to the Leisure Inn Motel at Pokolbin where we will be staying for three nights.

Breakfast and dinner will be at the motel on each of the three nights (cost included).

Morning teas will be provided each day by the coach company when the coach is in use.

Day 2 will see us take a horse and buggy ride to two wineries and in the afternoon we will visit the renowned Hunter Valley Rose Gardens which could well be at their very best in October. Lunch may be purchased at the Rose Garden café or restaurant, according to your taste on the day.

Day 3 will include a coach trip to Gloucester where we will have lunch, then return to the motel via Dungog where we will make a stop. It is envisaged lunch will be at a herb farm with a set menu. Cost of the lunch will be advised before the overall trip is confirmed. Seaforth Probus did this many years ago and it included at that time a very entertaining talk by the female owner/entrepreneur.

Day 4 will see us travel by coach to Newcastle where we will board a catamaran (capacity 40 persons seated) and travel to Morpeth (2.5 hours). After time to browse the quaint country style shopping village, we will board the coach for the return journey to Sydney eta 1700 hours.

Price per person is $760 excluding all lunches and bowling/golf fees based upon a minimum of 40 people participating.

A non-refundable* deposit of $200 per person is payable at the May 2017 meeting. Reservations have to be made in late May for the accommo-dation and transport, particularly the boat cruise.

Heron Island Trip The date for this trip is Sunday, February 25  to

Friday, March 1, 2018We still have some seats left for this trip. Please

let me know if you are interested.   David  Gulliford

EntertainmentMuriel’s Wedding — The MusicalRoslyn Packer Theatre, Hickson Rd, Millers PointWednesday, January 10, 2018

We have reserved 19 seats (all that were left), dress circle, for the matinee of this big, brash, and very cheeky musical at Roslyn Packer Theatre which is about 150m from Barangaroo Reserve entrance at Towns Road, where there is a public car park.

The film’s original writer-director has updated his screenplay into a dazzling new stage   show

bringing the story into the present but keeping all the irreverence and naughtiness of the film with its dark edge.

Cost is $78 (senior). We need to know numbers interested to hold the seats and payment is required on or before the October meeting.

As there is a parking station nearby, we will not be using a bus.  There are several cafes close by. Also, if it is a fine day, a walk, for about 30/40 minutes through Barangaroo Reserve is well worth the effort.
