Here are a few tips: On test day, make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a healthy breakfast. Many teachers report that students who don't do well on tests haven't gotten enough sleep, and haven't eaten breakfast on the morning of the test. Doing both of these things will ensure that your child is working at full capacity. Remain positive: Staying calm will help your child stay calm. If she/he gets nervous about the test or is likely to experience anxiety during the test, help them practice some relaxation techniques that they can try once they are taking the test. On a Daily Basis: In addition to these strategies, there are a number of ways that you can maximize your child's learning capabilities throughout the school year, which can lead to confident test-taking. Some of these strategies include: Assisting your child with homework and ensuring that your child is completing all homework assignments Helping to develop good study habits, thinking skills, and a positive attitude towards education from an early age Ensuring that your child has good attendance at school Staying in communication with your child's teacher Encouraging your child to read as much as possible, and to increase their vocabulary - even reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books regularly will help improve reading skills Looking for educational games and programs that engage your child Helping your child learn how to follow directions carefully. Finally, remember that standardized tests and grading systems are not perfect; each format has its own limitations. As you help your child do his/her best on the tests they take and in all of their schoolwork, also remind them that testing is just one part of their education. With your support and involvement, he/she will be well on their way to his/her own bright future. Sincerely, Kim Fox Finch Elementary Principal

From Your PTO Taco Time Dine Out was a great success. Thank you for supporting the Classroom Assistance Fund!

Our last Dine Out of the year is all day on Wednesday, May 18th at Flying Goat on NW Blvd.

Thanks to Pizza Rita for the $150 for the pizza box flap points and to all the students for bringing them in. Keep them coming – we get 50 cents a flap!

Thank you to Lyn Hippauf for chairing Muffins with Mom, and to all of the staff and parent volunteers for working the event. We hope everyone had fun and enjoyed a break in the morning routine.

The first week of May is Staff Appreciation Week. Every year we provide lunch for the week for our wonderful staff. Flyers went out in April for parents to bring in lunch dishes to support this effort. Thank you so much for your contributions. The staff really enjoys this special week and we love showing them how much we appreciate them!

Please note the May BOGO Book Fair is canceled due to scheduling conflicts.

Please join us for the school year’s final PTO Meeting Tuesday, May 10th (second Tuesday of the month) at 6 pm in the multi-purpose room. We will be electing next year’s PTO Board members and planning the events for next year. This meeting may last longer than the normal hour, but we are providing pizza and childcare. Please come and vote on the board positions and events to next year’s calendar.

Thank you to Mrs. Hester, Ms. Michelson, Mrs. Zambryski, Mrs. Hippauf, Ms. Gilbertz, and Mrs. Luciani for representing our teaching staff at the April meeting. We really appreciate your support!

If you have any questions or concerns that we can help you with please contact us at [email protected].

Warm Weather Dress Here are some reminders of appropriate school attire:

• T-Shirts and tops need to be full length, not cropped or showing waistlines.

• Tank top straps need to be wide. Spaghetti strap tops can only be worn with a sweater or jackets to cover them. Straps should be 2 fingers width wide as a rule.

• Mesh tops may only be worn over other shirts.

• Shorts are acceptable; but please, no extremely “short shorts” or skirts. Shorts should be to the end of fingertips when arms are held down at their sides.

• High heels, or “Slip ons” such as soccer slides and flip-flops are not safe for school. All footwear should be safe for running, play activities and the playground.

• Sunglasses, hats and other head coverings should not be worn in the building.

Please review these rules with your children so that appropriate clothing is worn by all our students. We will call you for a change of clothes if student does not meet these standards. Thank you for your support!

LAST PTO Dine Out Night for the school is at The Flying Goat ALL DAY on Wednesday May 18th!

Pesticide Application

Our annual unwanted Weed & Grass Spray will be done

at Finch Elementary on May 11th. This spray is to

control unwanted grass and weeds in selected areas of

our school including the shrub beds, around the trees

and along the street curb areas. Our school has taken

steps to keep school children away from these areas

for 24 hours following the application of spray. We

ask that you and your children refrain from making

contact with or playing around the trees and shrubs at

our school during this time frame. We will not be

spraying any of the grass play areas at the Elementary

school except just around the trees. A variation from

this schedule may occur as a result of inclement

weather.

Student Corner Written by Philip Colvin, Forrest Yegge and Logan Herres

Welcome back fellow Mustangs to May’s edition of “Student Corner”. Thank you for reading our hard work. This month you’ll be reading about the Smarter Balance Test and the PTO Dine out night at The Flying Goat. As always we will provide you with a Monthly Joke! Lights, Camera, Action!

The Smarter Balance test may seem unimportant to some students, but it is actually very important. This test doesn’t just give scores to individual students, but to an entire school! The test shows the school oard what academic level Finch is at. Every students score represents Finch as a whole. Don’t forget your score counts!

An upcoming Finch event is just around the next corner. On the 18th is a PTO dineout night for Finch families at The Flying Goat. This is a great place to eat delicious pizza and keep in touch with Finch staff and parents. Mmmm…. Pizza! The three of us hope to see you there.

Now time for the ‘Monthly Joke’:

Q. What do cowboys like on their salad?

A. Ranch Dressing!

In this episode you read about the Smarter Balance test and the PTO dine out night coming up. This concludes May’s edition of “Student Corner”. We hope to see you next time for the final edition of this school year.

Books for Bikes We are kicking off the Books for Bikes reading recognition program. We have participated in this great program in the past with wonderful results. Books for Bikes is being co-sponsored by the Audubon Park Masonic Lodge #272 and our Finch PTO.

Kindergarten-3rd grade students may fill out a coupon for every 15 minutes they read at home. 4th-6th grade students may fill out a coupon for every 30 minutes they read at home. Then your child brings his/her completed Books for Bikes coupons back to school

and drops them in the Books for Bikes coupon box in the office.

We will draw four winning coupons on May 13th. The selected students will win a brand new bike provided by the Audubon Park Masonic Lodge #272 or the Finch PTO. We want to thank these two groups for supporting our students and for promoting the love of reading.

Finch Multi-Purpose Room

Finch Students will have the opportunity this month to partner with a local charity, Generation Alive to help raise money to fight hunger. Students will be collecting change, and will then pack food at a “SomethingtoEat Hands-on Team” during the day on May 10th. Here is some info about Generation Alive:

Where did we come from? Founded in 2005 by Jeremy and Larisa Affeldt, Generation Alive is a movement of young people responding to the needs of other young people wherever, whenever, however. Jeremy's passion comes from his Christian faith to treat others as you want to be treated. He believes to live out his faith meant to help those who can't live out their dreams, those who simply live to survive another day due to poverty. His beliefs lead him to create Generation Alive to help the youth of America learn to live a life of compassion towards other youth who live with the pain of extreme poverty. What do we do?

Generation Alive is developing a generation of young leaders, committed to serving others and responding to the needs in their community. Moving a generation to act! We do this by moving a generation to act through awareness education and by... Instilling into young people that their compassion, their generosity and their energy are paramount in identifying and alleviating needs in their communities.   Using programs focused on hunger relief, anti-human trafficking and leadership development, to provide young people with a platform to be culture changers.
