Gas findings in Israel

The gas findings in Israel have made headlines. By many they are viewed as the “next-big-thing” in the field of energy

supply. Due to these large-scale gas discoveries in the waters of Israel, the gas sector is in significant growth and the

development in discoveries adds to the need for new technologies to help build a new gas sector in Israel.

With the announcement in 2009 on “Tamar” as a commercial discovery, and additional significant quantity of gas

which was discovered in the reservoir “Leviathan” the perception of “geology” risk of exploring natural gas in the

Mediterranean Sea, was changed. The change has created new opportunities for the offshore companies and re-

search environments in Denmark. Against this background the Embassy will organize a trip for all interested parties

to come to Israel and meet with all stakeholders. The trip will take place in the autumn of 2014.

Sofia Tech Park: Driving Innovation Engine for Bulgaria

A new science and technology park, focusing on ICT, Life Sciences and Biotech will be constructed in the heart of Sofia

by 2015. EUR 50 m. investment in hard infrastructure and soft measures comes from ERDF and national funding.

The new Science and Technology Park will be located in the heart of Sofia in close proximity to top

universities, research institutes and private business. The primary infrastructure of the park will

consist of 11 scientific laboratories, business incubator for start-up companies, innovation forum

and Experimentarium – kids’ area for applied science. The main goal of the project is to become a

regional hub where business and science, ideas and mentors, start-ups and multinationals collide

to create innovation. Public areas, like green parks, exhibition areas and a visitor centre, will be

developed as well to serve as an inspiration to entrepreneurs and scientists for their projects.

The main idea of the project is to gather main initiators and participators of the innovative process

to communicate and possibly co-operate and create value, to enhance the technology transfer

between Universities and the business, to serve as a platform for the support of start-ups and ideas, to help the de-

velopment of a knowledge-based economy in Bulgaria. Sofia Tech Park has signed memorandums for collaboration

with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia Technical University, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, the Medical

University in Sofia and the University of National and World Economy. More collaborators are expected to join this

group. Similar to the other tech parks around the world, this project is expected to become a facilitator for informal

and formal exchange of ideas and thus lead to a substantial improvement not only in the quantity but also in the

quality of innovations. Moreover, Sofia Tech Park will serve as an Innovation Centre assisting newly-created compa-

nies with further knowledge about legislation, patents, promotion of products and services and will become driving

engine for Bulgaria, attracting top international education programs, multinationals and scientific research.

Sofia Tech Park is also actively seeking cooperation with foreign institutions with similar occupation. Recently, the

management of Sofia Tech Park joined a large academic delegation from VUZF University (top business school in

Sofia) on a visit to Copenhagen, Denmark. Members of the delegation, including the Chairman and the Executive

Director of Sofia Tech Park delivered presentations during the annual event on “Co-Creating Social Entrepreneurship

for Growth”, which was held on 2-3 April at the Copenhagen Business School, presenting the Bulgarian view-point on

the topic. The main focuses of the event were Bulgaria, Brazil, Denmark and India. Representatives from Sofia Tech

Park and VUZF University also visited the Copenhagen Science and Technology Park and discussed possible options

for mutual support and exchange of know-how and good practice for future development. Bulgaria has good per-

spectives in providing fertile business environment for innovation and is already becoming an Innovation Hub in

Eastern Europe not only because of highly educated human capital, but also due to the nurturing of entrepreneurs,

looking for risk capital from Bulgaria and abroad to fund their innovative ideas.

Private investors are now able to own fertile farmland in Romania

Before the 1st of January 2014 it was only legal for foreigners to buy Romanian farmland if they had a Romanian

company. But from the turn of the year foreign citizens have been granted the right to purchase Romanian farmland

directly and as a private investor.

A large number of foreigners have already exploited Romanians fertile land, cheap labor force and cheap price per

hectare land. In fact 3 million hectares of farmland, equaling a third of Romanian’s fertile land, is owned by non-

Romanians. It is especially Danes, Italians and Germans who buy Romanian land to make well-established farming

units and it is possible to make great profit on the Romanian market. The Romanian market is undersupplied of dif-

ferent kinds of agricultural products which cause high sales prices. The market balances in Romania is not expected

to change preliminary. It is therefore not a bad business to buy Romanian farmland these days, and everything

points towards that the number of foreign buyers in Romania will increase in the future after the new legislation.

After the reforms in Romania in year 1991 land was given back to the people, who originally owned it. These people

were never asked if they needed the land for farming. Therefor there is a great sell out of farming land in Romanian,

and a great amount of land can be bought very cheap. Compared to most European countries, the price of Romanian

farmland is 4-5 times lower. The average price is around 2,500 Euros per hectare in Romania. Most foreign farmers

buy the fertile Romanian land, especially in the Western part of Romania, but also in the Southern part in area of

Calarasi, Braila and Ialomita, where the prices are higher than the average. Farmland in the northern Transylvania

and in the Moldova-region could be a good option too. 10 million hectares of farmland is in use at the moment in

Romania, but in fact Romania have around 14 million hectares which can be used for farmland.

AGRARIA International Trade Fair For Agriculture, Food Industry and Animal husbandry, which was held between 24th

– 27th of April 2014 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

“Investments in the Romanian agricultural sector have a high focus in a Danish perspective. Many Danish farmers

and Danish companies affiliated with the agricultural sector have established themselves in Romania. Approximately

1.5 % of the arable lands in Romania are tilled by Danish farmers. And the number is still growing” the Danish am-

bassador to Romania, Michael Sternberg, said in his Speech. Besides of that the Danish ambassador to Romania,

Michael Sternberg, welcomed further illustration of the widening and deepening Danish-Romanian relations in the

field of agriculture as it will contribute to expanding and deepening the cooperation in the agricultural sector at large

and in the horticulture sub-sector in particular.

AGRARIA Romania is an agricultural fair, which is devoted to the farming industry of Romania. The event has been

organized in Cluj-Napoca since 1995, and it has become the second largest agricultural fair in Romania and the most

representative for Transylvania. The fair provides a platform for leading industries in the farming sector to interact

with traditional customers.

Greek Shipping and Posidonia 2014

Despite the low rates caused by the global economic crisis and an oversupply of vessels, Greek shipping has managed

to overcome the obstacles and is indeed still alive.

Greece has the largest commercial fleet in the world and shipping is of great importance to the country’s economy in

terms of both jobs and economic activity. Greek ship-owners are investing in new buildings again, which is an indica-

tion of the positive sentiment in the market. Nobody says it out loud yet, but the sector is on the rise again.

Also investments in retrofit take place. Thus the Greek ship-owners are investing in energy optimization of their

fleets in order to generate savings through the reduction in fuel consumption. Some companies have established a

separate section within their technical department overlooking the energy consumption of their vessels and with the

explicit task to propose and implement energy saving projects.

Every other year Greece hosts the Posidonia Exhibition, one of the biggest events in the world within the shipping

industry. Almost 1,900 exhibitors from 85 countries and over 18,500 visitors from 92 countries participated in the

latest Posidonia Exhibition in 2012. This major gathering provides unique access to Greek and international ship-

owners and –buyers. The fact that several exhibitors have participated in the event since it was first launched 40

years ago underlines the value creation for the participating companies and thereby the success of the event.

A unique feature of Posidonia is the extensive programme of conferences and seminars organized in connection with

the exhibition. This creates an extensive opportunity for companies and stakeholders to share knowledge, initiate

business deals and establish networks across borders.

This year’s Posidonia will be held on 2-6 June in the Metropolitan Expo in Athens. Also this year the Danish Marine

Group will participate in the exhibition with a joint Danish stand. For further information about Greek shipping and

Posidonia, please contact the Embassy.

The Romanian Tiger

The Romanian economy has improved during the recent years, and Financial Times is now associating the Romanian

growth with the Asian tiger economies. And when you look at the Romanian’s national growth you can understand

these associations.

The National Institute of Statistics in Ro-

mania made an estimate in February

2014 saying that the Romanian economy

grew by 5,2% year-on-year in the final

quarter of 2013. This means that the Real

GDP growth has come out at 3,5%. The

Romanian Economy is therefore one of

the fastest in Europe. (Financial Times)

Furthermore the inflation rate is project-

ed to decelerate from 3,2% in 2013 to

2,4% in 2014 because of the falling food

prices. The inflation had been a serious concern, but in January 2014 the inflation fell to an all-time low of 1, 1%.

(European Economic Forecast 2014, European Commission)

Romania’s biggest bank, BCR, recently made a research saying that is especially was the domestic demand, which

had a positive contribution to Romania’s Economy. And Romania’s performance gives reasons to be optimistic. In

the transport and logistic sector you see great results the recent years, as well as in the field on energy, especially on

green energy you will find high speed which leads to great improvements and investments. Other sectors where

there are very good business perspectives are in agriculture, food, pharma, and industrial machinery.

Three sectors pull Bulgaria out of the crisis

There are several sectors that are the main drivers of pushing the crisis, and if they are smartly nurtured, it may lead

the economy to a quick and smart growth.

There are several sectors that are the main drivers of pushing

away the crisis and if they are smartly nurtured may lead the

economy to a quick and smart growth. According to a report

of the World Bank, one of these sectors is the food (with larg-

est income taken by the meat, fruit and vegetables and or-

ganic products) and the other one is industry, which holds the

largest share in terms of employment. Bulgaria has tradition-

ally been strong in the export of wine, chicken, fresh cheese

and bakery products.

According to the report in the industrial cluster there are more

than 7,000 companies, employing around 115 000 people. The

total revenue was BGN 4.059 billion. Analysis shows the advantages are: high standards of quality, well-developed

network of transportation and distribution, access to European markets, a traditional presence in Russia and cheap

labour. However, there are some obstacles to the further development of the sector and these include: the old

equipment and lack of connection with research centers. Industry, in general, is focused entirely on exports - 15% of

the total export while 50% of them are going to Germany and Italy. The sector is dominated by small players and this

hinders the development of larger projects and the entry of markets with high value added.

The other growing sector is the pharmaceutical one. Despite being one of the smallest in the EU market, it reached

BGN 2,098 billion in 2013(2.45% of GDP), and all projections are that this market will grow by about 9.1% this year.

A major advantage according to the experts is the strong traditions and geographical proximity to markets in the

Middle East but the obstacles were many, including heavy regulations.

Last but not least is the high tech sector. Since 2006, it grew by 14% per year and the profits have increased accord-

ingly to about 83% of exports of goods and services. Currently this sector accounts for 47% of total exports of busi-

ness services and it is estimated that the average value created by an employee was BGN 45 700 for 2013.

The analyzed data for 2013 shows that among the sectors with the highest growth are the agricultural sector by

2.1%, ICT with 5.5% , financial and insurance sector with 4% and the real estate with 1%. In conclusion all of this data

shows that Bulgaria succeeds in stabilizing the environment and building up good reputation for the investors in the

sectors.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül’s State Visit to Denmark

The official state visit to Denmark will improve the relationship between Turkey and Denmark in many fields. Den-

mark and Turkey has signed a contract for further cooperation in the future.

The red carpet was rolled out for the Turkish President Abdullah Gül on March 17 – 19 March 2014 welcomed by

Queen of Denmark Margrethe II and the whole Royal Family. President Abdullah Gül, Finance Minister Mehmet

Şimşek and TOBB, honoured the visit together with DEIK (Danish Economic Relations Board) Chairman M. Rıfat

Hisarciklioğlu accompanied with a delegation of ministers, business representatives, media and other official high-

ranked stakeholders.

Bilateral, political and commercial relations were on the agenda as well as Turkey’s accession negotiations with the

EU. Furthermore, a number of foreign policy issues were discussed during the visit, but the overall aim of the visit

was mainly to strengthen already existing trade relations and

develop new ones between Denmark and Turkey.

The visit, which was coordinated by The Union of Chambers and

Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) and The Danish Confed-

eration of Industries (DI), had primary focus on 3 different sec-

tors, Green Energy Technology, Food & Agriculture Technologies

and Food & Healthcare. The sectors are also stated in the con-

tract for further improvement.

A visit to House of Green is supporting the fact that Turkey is a growing market with a well-educated, large popula-

tion and an impressive growth rates everywhere, but especially in the energy and environment sector. The sector is

expected a doubling demand of energy and energy imports – approx. 75% of total energy consumption, which is a

sector where Denmark has recognized strengths and also willing to support.
