Community Assistance FundFunding is provided in response to immediate needs in the community through established non-profit agen-cies. Grants are distributed in amounts up to $500 each through Fall and Spring cycles.

Jefferson AwardsThe Jefferson Awards is designed to encourage and honor outstanding voluntarism. Nominees are judged within four categories: adult, youth, group, and educa-tion. The local finalist competes in Washington, D.C. for the national Grand Award. The program is a joint ef-fort between the Junior League and the Times Record News.

Kids in the KitchenThe goal of this initiative, which is supported by The As-sociation of Junior Leagues International, is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. League-wide involvement includes a commu-nity-based, one-day event in addition to mini courses implemented at an after-school program at Camp Fire USA.

Opportunity KnocksVolunteer time and funding assistance is provided in re-sponse to immediate, short-term needs in the community through established non-profit agencies. Volunteer time ranges from a few hours to a one-day project. Grants are given in amounts up to $1500 each.

Research & DevelopmentInnovative projects are researched and developed for plausible addition to the Community Plan. Projects must meet a need in both the community and the League.

International FriendshipForty-four years of goodwill, understanding and cultural exchange exists between the Junior League and the German Air Force Squadron of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program at Sheppard Air Force Base.

Partners In Education & PowerPak 4 KidsThe League will partner with the Wichita Falls Indepen-dent School District to enhance student learning through program and project development and implementation for an adopted school. This volunteer and financial com-mitment also includes the stuffing and delivery of back-packs to the adopted school as part of the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank’s PowerPak 4 Kids initiative, an ongo-ing effort to provide food to at-risk children on weekends and breaks when school meals are not available.

Miracle League Field of DreamsOur current signature project provides for the planning, fundraising, and construction of a Miracle League Field where children with disabilities, ages 3-21, have the op-portunty to experience the joy of playing baseball. The Junior League’s financial commitment to this project is $20,000 per year for five years, totaling $100,000. 2009-2010 marks the fourth of five years.

TrainingTraining is a fundamental and integral component of the Junior League mission. Through job placements and project execution, the Junior League teaches skills andcompetencies to prepare its members to be effectivecommunity leaders. Leadership development and training is what sets the Junior League apart from othercommunity service organizations. Training also reinforc-es a second component of the Junior League mission, improving the potential of women.

What an AMAZING year it has been! To recap briefly, I’d like to frame our ac-complishments through this year’s theme. The Junior League of Wichita Falls is a place...Where change happens. The Junior League, by its very nature, is an organization of change. Each year we change our placements, and we change as a natural result of the experiences we have. For me, I have found that one of the greatest change agents in the Junior League is embedded at the heart of our mission...training. This year’s training initiative has not only produced individual change for many of our members, but it has bolstered our organization’s capacity. Through it we have learned skills and competencies and are now better equipped to facilitate change ourselves. We’ve raised the bar! Since August, change has been defined by your Board of Directors through a true shift from manage-ment to governance. This practice will only be accentuated with the recent membership vote to combine the structural operating system for the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. And furthermore, hot off the press, are the preliminary recommendations for future modifications to the placement system with projected implementation beginning in 2011-2012 and extending through 2015. We’ve covered some ground. Change has been and will continue to be difficult. But I thank you for taking some major risks, as the potential for positive change has outweighed the status quo. You are all women serving as catalysts for lasting change.

The Junior League of Wichita Falls is also a place...Where celebrations happen. We celebrate...change, training, the work of the Ad Hoc Committees, our 40th Anniversary with the As-sociation of Junior Leagues International, our place in the community, the collaboration between committees which has helped to solidify a true sense of community, the League Center facelift, the involvement of sustain-ers, the first recruitment televised public service announcement, 26 new Active members, and life-changing friendships. On a larger external scope, we celebrate our many efforts within the community. (Be sure to check out the 2009-2010 Year in Review on page 17!) Through our work, lives have been changed in ways we may never know. To me, that’s the most amazing celebration!

The Junior League of Wichita Falls is a place...Where commendation happens. It’s been quite a year. And, it has taken ALL of us to make it happen. I feel confident that we have cre-ated a strong legacy for the future, and I thank each of you for the part you played. I am so proud to be among you as a member of the Junior League of Wichita Falls. I would also like to thank each of you for the privilege to serve you and an organization which I dearly love. I will cherish so many wonderful memories, the friendships, and most importantly the collective strength and spirit of our group of volunteers. To each of you, and in the words of William Shakespeare, I can no other answer make, but thanks, and thanks.

And finally, the Junior League of Wichita Falls is a place...Where new chapters happen. In looking forward, the 2010-2011 team under the direction of Kathy Partridge is eager for their oppor-tunity to lead us into the future to be an even stronger and more successful organization. There is much work to be done, and others are counting on us to do it. As we continue our work towards our Mission, we will all ensure that now and for future years, the Junior League of Wichita Falls will be a place Where Amazing Hap-pens.

Remember what it was like to step into a new position in the League? What are you supposed to do? how many hours will this take? are there any ways to make it better? What worked so great that you will want to make sure it gets done again? One way to find out for sure is with continuity meetings which will be starting at the first of June. If you

are passing down a notebook, thumb drive or disc, make sure you are ready to help the next person. Put yourself in their shoes, and think about what you wanted to know and learn before you started out your year.

And The Winner Is….Our Community!!The Junior League of Wichita Falls and Times Record News rolled out the carpet, and a fabulous dinner was served to many wonderful volunteers in our community as they were honored at the Jefferson Awards on April 29th. The Kemp Center for the Arts served as the perfect backdrop for this grand event. We started the evening with a bang with Justice of the Peace Janice Sons serving as our Keynote speaker. Her upbeat energy and passion for voluntarism was absolutely apparent throughout her message.

The Olive Garden generously provided dinner for all that attended the evening’s event. Not only did they provide the food, but also the food service. We are so grateful for Sal Rodriguez and his Olive Garden Team. Smith Gardentown Farms donated striking bright red Gerber daisies to adorn each table and the room.

The highlight of the evening was honoring all the selfless volunteers that serve this community. We would love to once again pay trib-ute to all those nominated:

She will represent Wichita Falls proudly in Washington D.C.

Everyone nominated is a winner and a blessing to each group they serve, but our community was the overall winner because of the giv-ing hearts of these volunteers. We know that our community is inspired by each of these nominees. We thank them for their commit-ment to voluntarism!!

Paula Perkins, Kathy Partridge and I attended the Annual AJLI con-ference in Orlando, FL April 15-17. We had opportunities to attend break-out sessions that pertained to our positions in the league, league size, and topics of interest. The training was wonderful, and I left feeling a little bit closer to being ready for the new role I have taken in the league. Kathy learned even more on facilitating, the new suggested nominating structure, and other information to use as our fearless leader next year. Paula attended break-outs focused on the outgoing president and life after the league presidency! It was also exciting to see Paula come into the opening session holding our Wichita Falls sign and voting on your behalf on the many items of business conducted. Thank you for this incredible training opportunity. And, if you ever get the chance to travel for the league, it is amaz-ing. The AJLI staff and trainers go above and beyond to prepare the leaders of the Junior Leagues of America, and beyond. We all three look forward to using this great training in the following year to improve our communities and our League!

Annual AJLI Conference...by SueAnn Altman

Paula Perkins representing the Junior League of Wichita Falls

Kids in the Kitchen held its Field Day/Fun Run on April 10 at Lucy Park. It was a beautiful day and about 70 children and their parents participated. Dave Roberts from NIN made it just in time to kick off the fun run. Craze Cat, from the Wildcats hockey team, led the kids out on the 1-mile fun run. In about 15 minutes, the first kids started crossing the finish line. Kathy Partridge’s son came in 2nd place and my own part time couch potato came in 3rd. Everyone

who participated received a medal. After the run, the kids played limbo, hula hooped, and jumped rope. There were also sack races and a large inflatable obstacle course. The kids were also able to go into the cabin, wash their hands, and make a snack. There were fruit kabobs and turkey/cheese rollups. Before they left they could make some trail mix to take with them. We also had face painting and sidewalk chalk. McGruff even stopped by for a visit. Every child received a bag filled with a sport bottle, a jump rope, hand sanitizer, a toothbrush, and a recipe and nutrition booklet. At the end we had a drawing for a bicycle and a party for 10 at Falls Funhouse. It was a lot of fun and we were able to show the kids some nutritious foods and fun ways to be active.

Each issue of our 2009-2010 League Connections have featured a portion of AJLI’s current work towards the development of the new strategic roadmap (the plan to ensure that our

organization is thriving in 2029) for our Association and its member Leagues. The May issue will review a summary of current recommendations.

AJLI’s Strategic Roadmap: What It Means To You

The five Strategic Questions and accompanying recommendations speak to an important shift in the core values that underpin the organization’s Mission and rich history.

In Memory of ThoseWe LostDuring the 2009-2010 League year, we were saddened to have lost three Sustaining members. Each helped to shape our or-ganization through the giving of herself to make Wichita Falls a better community and will be greatly missed by all who knew

and loved her. The 2009-2010 Board of Directors has made a donation to the JLWF Memorial Fund in honor of each lady.

Barbara Wheeler Cullum joined her Heavenly Father, a host of family members, and dear friends on Sunday afternoon, June 21, 2009. Born on August 9, 1927, Barbara was the daughter of Louise and Thomas Luther Wheeler. She was a graduate of Wichita Falls High School and attended the University of Texas where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Barbara and James Anderson Cullum were married February 11, 1947. The pride of her life was being a devoted wife and the mother of her three children. She took great joy in being “Baba” to her six grandchildren. Barbara was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder. She was a charter member of the Junior League of Wichita Falls. Her passion in life was serving her family, church, and community. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband and her infant sons, John and Thomas Cullum. She is survived by her daugh-ters, Connie Dawley and husband Jim of Abilene, Texas, Carol Cullum and Johnny Triesch of San Antonio, Texas; son, Jim Cullum and wife Kelley of Wichita Falls, Texas; and a sister, Marilyn Waggoner and husband Tommy of Big Fork, Montana. Her grandchildren include Cullum Jefferies, Clayton Harrison, Amy Triesch Turcotte, Brandon Cullum, Taylor Triesch, Abby Cullum, Colby Gentry and Kyle Gentry. She is survived by two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to her loving caregivers: Teena Harris, Joyce Westmoreland, Kristen Weaver and Rachel Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls, 4909 Johnson Road, Wichita Falls, Texas, 76310; the House of Hope, 5100 Stone Lake Drive, Wichita Falls, Texas, 76310; or First Presbyterian Church, 3601 Taft Blvd, Wichita Falls, Texas, 76308.

Gerry Long, 73, passed away Saturday evening in Wichita Falls surrounded by her loving family. Gerry was born on January 10, 1936, to Oscar and Rachel (Garrison) Johnson in Cyril, Oklahoma. The family moved to Wichita Falls in 1949. She was a 1954 graduate of Wichita Falls High School and attended Midwestern State University. On October 15, 1955, Gerry married her high school sweetheart Bob Long and the couple had two daughters and a son. Gerry was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Wichita Falls. She was also a member of the Alter Guild of the Church of the Good Shepherd. Mrs. Long was a member of two bridge clubs and enjoyed traveling. Gerry loved her grandchildren and spent as much time as possible with them. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bob of Wichita Falls; and one brother, Carroll Johnson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She is also survived by two daughters, Sharon Hague and her husband Steve of Shawnee, Kansas, and Pam Stamper and her husband Danny of Dripping Springs, Texas. Her son, Scott Long and his wife Ann of Mansfield, Texas, also survive Mrs. Long. Six grandchildren survive including Ryan, Ethan and Ashley Hague, and Matthew, Katie and Michael Long. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls and the Church of the Good Shepherd. Cathryn Graham Whaling, 86, a lifelong resident of Wichita Falls died peacefully at home March 17, 2010, St Patrick’s Day, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Born November 8, 1923, she was the daughter of Harry L. and Gladys Isbell Graham. After graduating from Wichita Falls High School, she attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo. She received a bachelor’s degree in English from Southern Methodist University, where she met her husband, Horance Moreland Whaling, then serving as a Navy pilot in World War II. During their 50-year marriage, the couple raised two children and were active supporters of the local ballet and tennis pro-grams. Mrs. Whaling had also served for many years on the alter guild at Good Shepherd and on the boards of the Wichita Falls Sym-phony League and the Wichita County Heritage Society. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and her brother, George Graham. Immediate survivors are daughter, Lynne Whaling Talbot of Fort Worth and her husband Dan; son, Richard Graham Whaling of Houston and his wife Mary; grandchildren, Richard Whaling of Chicago, and Kate Whaling of Los Angeles. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to consider a contribution to the Memorial Fund at Good Shepherd or to a favorite charity.

YEE-HAW! The International Friendship Committee just hosted the spring picnic for our German friends on Saturday, May 1. We provided plenty of burgers, brats, potato salad, baked beans, and of course, sodas and beer.

A couple of our guests were brave enough to hop on and ride a bull (yes, there were actually volunteers for bull riding!). Others had a great time chasing down donkeys and at-

tempting to climb on for a quick ride, and still others had an exciting time chasing cows to put panties on them. Children (and adults alike) were able to climb onto a very large long-horn for some photo opportunities, & chase cows in hopes of pulling ribbons off of their tails. All in all we had a great time. We had many great compliments on the event, and they are already look-ing forward to next year!

One, two, three strikes you’re out………if you have not made it to the Miracle League field to see some awesome baseball and amazing players. It has been a great 2010 season! The Miracle League Committee of 2010 has embraced this project and reaped the rewards of their hard work! Miracle League Family Day was held May 8th at the Miracle League field. We started out with homerun number one, the dugout dedication in memory of the very special Blaine Smith, who played in the Challenger division. The 2010 Miracle League “parade of players” made the second homerun. Finally, homerun number three went to the gracious Rotary Club North for providing, cooking, and serving hot dogs with chips to the Miracle League players and their families. The Miracle League Committee would like to thank the International Friendship Committee. The IF Committee graciously donated their left over drinks and chips from their Spring Picnic to the Miracle League “Family Day”. The Miracle League Committee would also like to thank The Rotary Club North for their participa-tion and service to Miracle League Family Day. They made this day a memorable one for the players and their families.

Training Year in Review: Developing Your PotentialWOW! What a year for training! From international speakers to the Leadership Development Institute to the Women to Watch program it has been a year FULL of new experiences and unique training opportunities. For those of you who were willing and able to take full advantage the opportunities provided this year…THANK YOU! The greatest excitement of the year has come from seeing members use the training they received to improve what we do and how we do it. THANK YOU for embracing the opportunity! THANK YOU for having the confidence and willingness to use what you learned! THANK YOU for your positive attitude and enthusiasm for the Mission. The trainings provided would not have been the success that they were without YOU to take part in them.

Beginning in the next League Connection, we will be including a new monthly article called “Developing Your Potential.” In this article, we want to share your feedback about how the trainings you received during 2009-2010 are benefiting you in your League positions as well as in other areas of your life. Your experiences and growth are a great encouragement to other League members as well as a fantastic way for us to learn from one another. If you would like to share how you have grown this year, please contact DeAndra West at [email protected]. I would love to hear (and write) about what you have to say.

April LDIThe Leadership Development Institute (LDI) sessions this year were a fantastic addition to the training we receive in the Junior League. Our April LDI was no exception to the good informa-tion (and fun) we gained from this time together. Amy Lam presented (as only Amy can) in her unique hands-on style of training on the topic “Conflict Resolution.” During the training, the participants worked through how to appropriately address and discuss differences of opinion. Conflict is a natural part of any organization and Amy addressed how to appropriately handle and work through these situations. She left us with some key words called an “I feel” state-ment to use when working through conflict with someone. The statement is as follows: “I feel __________ when you __________ because __________. I wish __________.” This helps you to better communicate and state your problem as well as understand the point of view of

the other person. Thank you, Amy, for providing us with a great training and ending our year on a high note with your enthusiasm and lots of laughter.

On Tuesday, May 11, the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 Boards of Directors met for an evening of celebration at the home of Sustainer, Norma Priester to begin the formal transition of leadership. Our own version of a FIESTA, the Outgo-ing Executive Committee members presented gifts to their corresponding incoming Executive Committee member, a tradition that has been observed for years. Top it off with a pinata bashing and a spicy Mexican meal, and it was an amazing time of reflection, fellowship, and an exciting time to look toward the future.

Sustaining the Mission by Joellen Tritton and Angela Culley

We are so excited to be planning our activities for the 2010-2011 year. We are looking forward to hosting a Fall party in October and a Spring party in April. The deci-sion was made to move away from Dec. and May since it seems calendars are always so full during those months. We are open to suggestions and or help if you would like to offer any. The actives have been so appreciative of any help we

offer them. Please make sure that you have returned your preference sheet or shoot a quick e-mail to the office and let them know where or how you would be willing to help in the coming year. Congratulations go to Jill Avis on being named Sustainer of Merit. Her list of ac-complishments was amazing. Thanks Jill for your dedication and dependability. We appreciate you! More to come in the future. Have a great summer.
