RABBI'S CORNER

THE ROLE OF A CANTOR Well, we hired a cantor! Cantor Aviva Marer, her husband Jim and their son Benjamin will be joining the IHC family this summer. I am so thrilled for you to meet them, and for them to meet you. Cantor Marer brings many talents and passions to our community, and our tireless search committee and our board have been duly impressed with her warmth, intelligence, and skill.

In congregations around the world, the role of the cantor is changing. For most of Jewish history, the cantor simply led services and taught others to chant Torah. The most significant change to the modern cantorate has been the move from congregations full of listeners to congregations filled with participants. Today’s cantor is asked to create not only beautiful moments on her own, but to teach and lead the congregation in song. Together, rabbis and cantors hope to craft prayerful experiences that invite everyone to add their voices.

Cantor Marer spoke beautifully during her visit about her desire to honor the musical legacies of our past, while respecting newer and more

evocative melodies and styles from the present. Our congregation has embraced the full spectrum of Jewish music: we welcome the many guest artists we regularly bring to Indianapolis, classical and contemporary. You have embraced my wife Tami’s music at the many congregational programs, services, B’nai Mitzvah and Nefesh Shabbat services she has led. We have honored as well the contributions of our Cantor Emerita Roger who has left an indelible mark on so many at IHC. Cantor Aviva is excited to continue all of these special relationships, and to establish many more. Look for new programs, new energy, and new music, which will undoubtedly lift us all up in prayer.

The summer brings with it some restorative time for our staff and clergy to prepare for another incredible year of learning, praying, and repairing our world (Torah, Tefillah, and Tikkun Olam). We will spend some time with dozens of our congregation’s children at Goldman Union Camp and other Jewish camps—where our kids will busy themselves creating a bright Jewish future as campers, counselors, specialists and staff. And we will also spend a great deal of time preparing our congregation for the High Holy Days in September, an exciting time to come together made even more exciting by the arrival of our new cantor. I hope you will join me in welcoming Cantor Aviva Marer and her family to IHC!

As the Religious school year ends and we look forward to an exciting and very different 2018-2019 Religious School program, keep in mind that the Temple Library is open whenever the building is open. You always are welcome to come by, browse and borrow books. And during the “lazy, hazy days of summer,” if you are inclined or have time to clear through some closets or other areas in your home, keep an eye out for books that are due back to Temple Library. Children’s books have yellow labels on the spine, Youth books have spine labels that are red, and adult books have white labels Some of the adult books may have a colored dot on the spine label. If the book is part of the congregation’s collection, do try to return it promptly. We have had many books that need returning and we appreciate your helping us to accomplish this task.

WHAT’S NEWThis year, the pilgrimage holiday of Shavuot falls on May 20, 2018. Religious School is not in session, but there are books in the library to help you with the family’s celebration.General books about Jewish holidays usually have a chapter on Shavuot, its origins and observances. Specific to the holiday itself, look for books with the call number 243.3.Shavuot, like many Jewish holidays, started as an agricultural event and marked the harvesting of wheat. Eventually, additional importance was added—specifically, the giving of the Ten Commandments. Here are several trivia items you may be able to learn from exploring materials in your Temple Library.

• Shavuot means “weeks” and is called The Festival of Weeks, as it occurs seven weeks after Passover.• This means that the holiday is celebrated on the sixth day of the month of Sivan, although a precisely fixed date is not stated in the Torah. • There have been Jews who observed the holiday on the seventh Sunday after Passover and others, like the Falashas of Ethiopia, who have done so on

the twelfth day of Sivan.• Later, the giving of the Torah, became associated with Shavuot.• In the nineteenth century, Reform Jews established the custom of Shavuot as being a day of confirmation for Jewish boys and girls, confirming their

identity in the Jewish faith. • Traditions include decorating synagogues and homes with green plants, the eating of dairy foods (blintzes are a favorite), and staying awake at night

to study Torah. There are different theories as to why these traditions exist.• The Book of Ruth is read during the holiday.• In the days of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jews would bring to the Temple two loaves of bread, the proverbial first fruits of the harvest, said to symbolize

the two tablets of the Ten Commandments.• In 1773, Rabbi Raphael Hayim Isaac Carigal, who had traveled to the American colonies from Hebron, preached on Shavuot at the Touro Synagogue in

Newport, Rhode Island. Later, his speech was said to have been the first Jewish sermon ever published in the United States. The above items are examples of trivia you can find in the Library. Shavuot is a happy holiday and enjoy your celebrations. Congratulations also go to this year’s IHC confirmands – we look forward to seeing your smiling faces on your class photograph, which will adorn the Religious School hallway along with pictures of Confirmands from the past.

Shalom Chaverim! As I write this article, we have announced our brand new Jewish Learning Program for next year. It’s a big deal. We’re very excited about it – and hope you are as well. Change is hard. Always. But more often than not, change leads us to different and exciting opportunities that we had never considered.

Adding Hebrew language to our Sunday morning classes is going to create all sorts of new opportunities for our community to learn and celebrate together. From spoken language (Hebrew Through Movement) to decoding (reading the alef-bet) we will be creating an entirely new learning culture and experience here at IHC.

We are dedicated to making this new learning experience a positive one. Our design process—which emphasized communication with parents through town hall meetings was very successful, and we intend to continue this trend by checking in with families in November/December. More than ever before, we need to be partners with all of our stakeholders—parents, students, professionals, and teachers to make this work. Creativity, flexibility, communication and patience are all necessary for this partnership to be successful. I look forward to creating new partnerships with all of you. As always, I am available to meet or talk through the program with you, just drop me an email, voicemail, or stop by.

Kol Tuv, -jed

On behalf of the Board, I want to invite you to attend the Annual Meeting of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 7:00 pm. If

you have not previously attended an Annual Meeting, please consider joining us this year as we have several important items to address.

Among the agenda items are the following: (1) electing several members to serve on the Board; (2) honoring our outgoing Board members;

(3) receiving reports from our Senior Rabbi, Executive Director, President and others; and (4) discussing and voting on new By-Laws for the Congregation.

Additional information can be found in the letter previously mailed to congregants.
