on 23 February, two sCC ladies, Joanna & Joanna made their way up Mount Kinabalu, located on the island of borneo, east Malaysian state of sabah. Inspired by the motivational talk with axe Rawlinson held at the Club earlier this year, climbing Mt. Kinabalu started off as a rational act to cross off yet another item on their bucket lists. However, in the process of elimination they both had gained so much more than just overcoming a physical feat. as a personal symbol of this success, the ladies have graciously contributed s$2,000 to the sCC JsM Fund. Well done and thank you, J&J!

The qualifying round of the singapore national Restaurant skills Competition (snRsC) was held on Wednesday, 3 april 2013 at Ite College West. This year, two of our sCC staff, Dennis ooi (from The oval) and Muhd Razi Ramli (from Main lounge) took up the challenge to vie for the top eight spots in the finals.

There are three rounds in this competition – napkin Folding, Cocktail & Mocktail and synchronized table setting. our team did fairly well in all categories. However, after a hard fight, the skills of the other more experienced competitors dominated the competition and our team did not make it to the finals.

Despite the outcome, the team had a great experience overall. With more confidence, creativity and practice, the sCC team plans to make a comeback in the next snRsC which will be held in 2015. Well done, Dennis and Razi!

The Club held a soft opening of the sCC Reference library on Thursday 21 March 2013. located at the Men’s bar, the sCC Reference library was a project initiated by the former Marketing & Communications (M&C) subcommittee under the chairmanship, Mr t Ravi Chandran.

President Col (Retd) gurcharan singh opened the evening with a short welcome followed by a speech by current M&C subcommittee Chairman, Mr steve Thompson.

The sCC Reference library houses copies of every sCC annual Report since 1970, when the Club produced its first printed annual Report. The library also includes copies of The Padang magazine (and its predecessor The sCC Magazine) from the 1980s onwards; Wisden's almanack, the indispensable reference of cricket; and books of interest to sportsmen and women, some of which donated by former Cricket Convenor Mr ash Raivadera and Deputy President Mr Michael grice.

Members interested in reading or borrowing these books may approach any of the Men’s bar staff for assistance. The sCC Reference library is a work in progress and Members are invited to donate their own sports books. Please contact Marcom Manager Kairi Metsaots at 6338 9271 (ext. 237) or email [email protected] for more information.

The evening was opened by President Col (Retd) gurcharan singh with a short speech and ribbon cutting of the new machines, after which Members were invited to a scrumptious buffer dinner and to try their hand at the new machines. Members who attended were presented with a special door gift and food vouchers.

In addition, a new game software, “big Red” was launched as well, replacing the “More Chilli’ machine, while the “Indian Princess” has been converted from coins to notes.

Members may expect more machines to be launched in the near future. look out for these details and buffet promotions in the sCC website and email blasts.

on saturday 6 april, the Club held its annual staff Party at the grand Park City Hall Hotel with the theme of “Retrolicious” – retro era from the 60s to 80s. The evening started as early as 5.30pm with a karaoke session. Those not inclined to sing chose to wait in line at the registration counter in order to be the first 30 staff to be eligible for the “tikam tikam” (early bird lucky Pick).

Welcome drinks and “Kachang Putih” were served as the staff mingled while others made funny faces at the instant photo booth with colourful wigs, funny hats and funky eyewear made available to jazz up their shots.

The party was graced with the attendance of several general Committee (gC) and establishment subcommittee (esC) Members.

The party kick-started with a quick ice-breaker game of express bingo won by Chris lim (F&b), after which President gurcharan presented a welcome address. The long service awards were then presented to 14 deserving staff for their tireless dedication and commitment to the Club.

Dinner was then served “in-style” as the honourable gC Members and members of the staff Party organising Committee walked-in with the first course. This was definitely a surprise element to the evening which made the staff feel very much appreciated for all their hard work over the year.

President gurcharan then drew the top 10 lucky Draw prizes which were kept a secret until the later part of the evening. The emcee then held a couple of stage games where a few “lucky” staff were picked to perform several acts, one of which was to dance to a hilarious rendition of the batman theme song.

as everyone enjoyed their dinner, the lights in the ballroom were suddenly dimmed and everyone definitely did not anticipate what was going to happen next. Coming in from the sides of the stage were our very own gC, in colourful wigs and costumes, dancing to The beatles’ “When I saw Her standing There”.

Without hesitation, a group of staff ran to the front of the stage with their digital devices, all excited to enjoy and record this “once-in-a-lifetime” moment of seeing the gC perform for them. It was indeed another surprise element of the evening!

next on the programme was the “Voice of sCC” contest with performances from five finalists. everyone performed well. sCC sure has a lot of fine talents! The eventual winner was Muhd Razi (F&b) who was bold enough to sing Journey’s “Faithfully”, which caught the attention of all present as they swayed their arms and sang along to the chorus. Congratulations to Razi for a fantastic performance!

no sCC staff Party is complete without crowning the best Dressed lady and gentleman of the evening. although there were quite a number of nicely-dressed attendees that night, only the top five ladies and five gentlemen were chosen to “fight” for the best Dressed award. Congratulations to ahmad salim (F&b) and gail bunoan (Membership) for winning the award!

The top 10 lucky Draw winners were announced next and it sure was an exciting part of the evening. For the first time in sCC staff Party history, the top 10 lucky Draw winners were all males. Congratulations to neil golfo (Property & Housekeeping) for winning the top prize of $1,688 cash.

a special surprise prize of a Raymond Weil watch worth more than $2,000 was also given out that night and it was won by Jill Woo (gM’s office). Congratulations, Jill!

as the evening that was filled with surprises came to a close, most attendees bade goodnight. others however decided to hit the dance floor and boogie the night away. They even had a chance to try their hand at the “gangnam style” craze and it was a lot of fun.

all in all, everyone present had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves; and are without doubt looking forward to the next staff Party in 2014. Thanks are in order to the staff Party organising Committee for a job well done and to the gC and all the guests for gracing the event.

CRICKET SECTION JSM by Peter brooks

For information on the JSM sponsorship scheme, please contact SCC Membership Departmentat 6338 9271 or email [email protected]

the Cricket section has over 60 Junior sports Members (JsM) and has a strong focus on developing talent at a young age. the sCC Cricket academy has over 20 members under the age of 16 committed to training twice a week under the

watchful eyes of sCC’s experienced coaches. our youngest JsMs compete in the sCa u16 Junior league which was held for the first time in 2012 – sCC were the proud winners. although the league provides a limited playing schedule, we are always delighted to host touring junior sides and other local opposition.

this season, the academy side has played the Rowlin national Cricket academy from Johannesburg. It is always great to see our young cricketers play strong opposition from overseas to really gauge their ability. this is a huge part of player development and consequently five players from last years’ u16 squad went on to represent singapore at the aCC elite Cup in Malaysia. Congratulations to simar Miglani, naren narasimhan, aalap asurlekar, luke Hambly, and brigu Iyer on achieving representative honours.

Crucial to the success of the JsM programme in Cricket is how our JsMs integrate into our senior cricket teams. We have JsMs playing regularly in all seven of our senior league teams. Jackie Manoj and Peter Muruthi regularly play in our top lions side and are testament to the way Cricket harnesses its young players to the highest level. However, in the lower leagues many of our younger JsMs get their first taste of league cricket. Five of our u16s have played league in the 2013 season. one of the most memorable experiences for Cricket JsMs is the opportunity to tour overseas – every outbound Cricket tour includes JsMs. our JsMs have played on the iconic MCg, competed hard in south africa, represented the spirit of the Club in Interport fixtures, and enjoyed the more social competitive environments of sixes competitions in Penang, beijing, and Jakarta. one thing is certain, the opportunities available to young cricketers at the sCC are first rate.

shout, cheer, sexy side-stepping, shimmy to the left, shimmy to the right – some of the moves on show both on and off the field at the 19th sCC International Hockey sixes which took place from 1 to 3 March 2013 on the Padang. The tournament was graced by guest-of-Honour, Mr lawrence Wong, acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth.

The event is now renowned worldwide and once again attracted 60 teams from the united Kingdom, australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, sri lanka, India, Japan, Philippines, Thailand and of course, singapore! 36 Men’s sides and 24 Women’s sides arrived at the Padang fresh-faced on saturday morning (well, some maybe had one too many at the Friday night Captains Meeting) ready to do battle.

baking under the singapore sun, the heat oozed from every pore of every player as they faced a gruelling match schedule to determine who would play-off in the respective Cup, Plate and bowl competitions. You could see the relief on the players’ faces when they saw the infamous paddling pool (kindly donated by Rosalind spink this year) as a great way to cool off and show off between matches!

The searing heat and heavy rain and storms disrupted play but this proved the perfect excuse for some to show their inner-child as they created mud slides to pass the time.

sCC fielded four teams, two in each competition – all eager to keep some of the silverware in the sCC trophy cabinet and showcase the best of singapore hockey to their opponents.

under the watchful eye of Coach Kanan and a great supportive sCC crowd who enjoyed watching from the side-lines, there were high hopes for the selected sides but they reached their peak after the opening day, and one by one we had to say goodbye to the home sides.

In the Men’s section, ssC Zeus went down 2-0 to the eventual runners-up tornadoes (singapore side) in the quarter finals of the Cup competition while sCC ares lost 4-0 to Modernians from australia in the last eight of the bowl.

For the ladies, sCC athena lost 2-1 in the quarter finals of the Cup to Cairns saphires who made it all the way to the final. sCC

Venus were beaten 3-0 by sst ladies also from australia who went on to win the bowl competition.

Maybe the teams did not capture the top honours on the pitch but with time and effort they devoted to creating the costumes for the legendary saturday night party, this year based on the “gods and goddesses” theme, they shone like heavenly starts.

gladiators (both ancient and resembling those in the recent tV show), greek goddesses and even a team of Maradona look-alikes, dined and drank the night away in typical sCC sixes fashion; all this in a Magical Marquee where everyone got into the spirit and created an atmosphere of camaraderie amidst the crazy antics!

special mention must go to Kanan’s youth academy that played a match against the Dutch Club and won. great to see the developing talent we have coming through the ranks. other memorable moments of the weekend (as shared by some of the players) include:

• Roz receiving a card!• Denise missing the first match on sunday – we’ll say

no more.• a player’s son getting excited by the paddling pool

not realising what was probably in there by sunday afternoon! and also taking on the role of official beer opener for the guys also enjoying the “water” – again, we’ll say no more.

• ssC athena goalkeeper sup, coming to compete after one of her medical exams and cramming in her studies between matches. apparently playing in the tournament is more stressful then doctors exams!

so another amazing event is over for another year but there is no doubt it will be back next year. bigger, better and with another fantastic party theme.

a huge thank you goes to the committee for all your hard work and dedication to making this event such a success. Without you, this would never happen and the section is very grateful for your efforts.

below is the answer to the sudoku challenge for March/april 2013. Congratulations once again to lee Hian Chua (winner of the January/February 2013 sudoku challenge).

scribe: John lewis taylor | Convenor: Rolv stokkmo like the Club in general, The balut section has also experienced a renewed buzz with greater participation in our monthly section nights held in the gilmour Room on every third tuesday of the month. February’s attendance was 33 Members and guests with anwar gaffoor taking the winners mantle with a score of 683 at an average of 113.83 per game. surprisingly Capt. Peter bird managed to acquire the wooden spoon with a disappointing score of 475 (average 79.16). Peter is usually at the top end of the scale, certainly above the Plimsoll line.

at the meeting in March, 34 Members attended. This time a delightful new Member sonja Wittenberg came first with a total of 702 (117). Prema sajnani ended up winning the booby prize with a score of 456 (76).

The section has just returned from reciprocal visits to the british Club bangkok and The Kinabalu Club, Kota Kinabalu, sabah. both Clubs were celebrating their 110th birthday. 19 Members plus three overseas members, Kris bonnichsen (Hua Hin) and leo & sumalee Rechsteiner (Chiang Mia) joining in the all Comers Cup. Rajan Menon took top honours for sCC with a score of 707 (117.83) and sumalee claimed second place. The reception, friendship and camaraderie shown to us by the Chairman and balut Convenor Phil alexander were all outstanding. a very happy tour was had by all.

on to Kota Kinabalu, sabah. Known as the Hornbill Country, the land below the Wind where one can view the finest sunsets in the world, with Mount Kinabalu as a backdrop. such a setting must have inspired sir elton John and bernie taupin to compose the lovely song, “Don’t let the sun go down on Me”. once again we were shown and given a tremendous welcome, especially from the Chairman John Math and from the entertainment Committee Member and balut Convenor Jocelyn Mongunjin.

as holders of the trophy, winners in 2012, ssC tried to match that feat, but alas, we could not. However, Rolv stokkmo won the individual title with a score of 986 (123.25) an almost unbelievable score, the highest that I can recall in any tournament. skill or lady luck? no doubt a combination of both. teams from all over sabah took part with tawau Yacht Club joining in the fray for the first time.

after the prize giving ceremony where appreciation Club gifts were exchanged, the host and MC, Jocelyn Mongunjin announced that a barbecue dinner had been laid on for all and a dance band appeared out of the blue, adding to the atmosphere. This was not on the official programme, making it an even more pleasant evening enabling participants to further enjoy the hospitality of sabah, to relax over several libations and enjoy a wonderful balmy evening.

In an effort to repay the kindness shown to sCC over recent months from the 32nd Interport held at The Kinabalu Yacht Club in november 2012, the all Comers Cup bangkok February 2013 and the 3rd Invitational tournament, sCC’s balut Committee has decided to resurrect our Pairs tournament for saturday 31 august. Invitations have already been sent to the three clubs mentioned.

Important dates for baluteers to put in their diaries:• SCC’s Annual General Meeting, Tuesday 23 April.• SCC’s Annual Sports Award Night, Friday 3 May.• Balut Section’s AGM Tuesday, 21 May at 6.00pm.• The local league commences on Wednesday 15 May at SRC. Members wishing to represent sCC, please contact our Capt. Raj Kumar at 96347503 or email [email protected]. The local league runs from May to october.

the long awaited John ewing Cup finally got underway. after numerous back and forth discussions with tanglin Club, Yew tuck, Convenor of tanglin Club’s billiards & snooker section, was finally able to gather his players to play against sCC.

saturday 2 February started with tanglin Club players being held up by traffic. once they arrived, both club's members immediately got down to business with no hassling. some of the players who were competing did not even have the time to eat their lunch!

our Convenor Jason tan was brimming with confidence and fielded two “new players” – sunil and terry. Jason decided to let some regular war horses from the sCC stable rest and

observe the competitive game. It was a very competitive afternoon and tanglin Club emerged victorious with a score of 4-2. through this competition, we furthered our close relationship with members from tanglin Club. new faces emerged and friendships were forged. We will be visiting them at their club the next time around. even though we were defeated, we learnt our mistakes and will apply the knowledge to further improve ourselves so that we can win back the trophy next year!

February is also the period to celebrate Chinese new Year. as usual, we had a great time meeting with all section Members in the evening where we enjoyed the “lo Hei” and suckling Pig, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. there were also friendly games and much celebration with the usual whisky and beer.

A BUSY QUARTER FORLAWN BOWLS

soon after the agM on 19 January, the committee co-opted three younger bowlers – Hui Kai, shermeen and Ming li to add a breadth of freshness to a somewhat aging committee.

The bowls year began with a colourful “all in Red” carnival on the green on 23 February and in the mixed carousel of 18 players, Chai, tony and Menon walked away with the grand prize of a pair of socks each! tony and Rita were star performers in their “all red” outfits and anointed best Dressed Man/Woman.

a boisterous “lo Hei”, followed by a sumptuous meal in the courtyard under the stars brought the carnival to a happy ending with the promise of a good year ahead. The Club President, Deputy President and several gC Members also graced the occasion.

sCC did very well thereafter in a series of matches. In the national Pairs at tanglin green, Christian and Melvin were first runners-up followed by edmund and ganesh.  In the tanglin Inter-club Mixed Pairs league, sCC’s younger bowlers – Hui Kai, Ming li, shermeen and Melvin reigned supreme yet again, two years in a row. sCC also came in tops, winning five out of six rinks with 104 against 68 shots,  in the friendly match with tanglin Club on 17 March.

48TH ANNUAL AUSTRALIAN TURF BOWLERS (TATTS) CARNIVAL, 5-12 APRIL 2013 (CANBERRA)16 sCC bowlers led by Convenor Prem and Captain Retna were in Canberra in april, intent on reclaiming the Purslowe trophy, which they last won in 2006. each of our three teams of four sCC bowlers was pitted in three games daily (two mornings and one afternoon) against nine teams from all over australia – making a total of 27 Rinks (or matches). sCC secured a creditable 13 wins but lost out on the total shots score under a complicated Pennant format. overall our players did very well indeed and we were closer to grasping the trophy than in previous years.

The incredibly fast speeds on the Canberra green of 14.5 seconds challenged our bowlers but it was a useful learning experience. and the riot of dazzling coloured t-shirts and bowls on the green against the blistering, cloudless blue sky with autumn leaves in the foreground and the hospitality of our Canberra hosts made for a splendid encounter all round.

The bridge section welcomed the Year of the snake at the gilmour Room. to set the mood for the occasion some Members came all dressed in the traditional and modern Chinese attire. after enjoying a sumptuous dinner of authentic Chinese cuisine the Members got seriously engrossed with the night’s main event, game of Duplicate bridge.

Just a little after six months of existence and chugging along full steam ahead, the section had to call a special general Meeting to nominate a new Convenor as the existing Convenor, Howard Haythornthwaite, resigned due to personal reasons.

special general Meeting was called on the 25 March at The oval, where the section Members nominated the new Convenor and the subsequent changes.

With the new Committee in place the bridge section aims to continue doing their best to make the Duplicate bridge nights a fun experience. We will be organising the Intermediate classes soon, do look out for the information in the sCC email blast.

“Honolulu”, that famous mecca of cricket quietly hidden away in the middle of the Pacific ocean ventured to singapore for the first time in many years for a match against the sCC. The sCC posted 183 in their 35 overs which saw new boy Chris “Courtney” Walsh posting his first knock for the Club with a fine 42* with a pile of 20 something’s from Chris Thomson, nick Power, Will tipping and brigu Iyer. In return the HCC were in trouble at 8 for 64, but a dogged tail-end fight back inclusive of a cracked helmet, saw the tourist succumb for 146.

the Kowloon Cricket Club hosted the sCC at the end of February, Royal bangkok sports Club are doing the same over the easter weekend. Rowlin national Cricket academy (a participant in the sCC International t20) came to singapore in March and played against the sCa national u16 team and the sCC u16 CYD team. the sCC made 150 runs, and struggled against a very strong Rowlin side who passed this total with 3 wickets down and 10 overs to spare.

league Cricket bounced back to the Padang and Dempsey in March with all teams in action, and we must applaud the fact that at the time of writing all the sCC Cricket teams have not been defeated by a non sCC team. there have been some terrific individual performances during this first month, with Pushpendra sharma the newly elected Jaguars Captain and Chief Media officer of the section posting a blistering 106 off 59 balls showing just why he’s a highly regarded Member off and on the field.

other fine efforts include unimish Parthasarathi’s well-compiled 89 for tigers, Dene border’s multiple 50’s for Cougars and sohrab Kushrushahi’s 79 and Quentin sears 47* in a match winning partnerships for the Cougars while Vipul aggarwal 65 for Panthers and nasser ahmeds 44 add some familiar names to the run chases across the section.

bowling performances aside simar Miglani is determined to follow up his televised "caught and bowled" on the MCg in January by pushing his case for higher cricket, taking 5 wickets in Division 2 matches, whilst Club stalwarts KP, Vipul, Vishal, Quentin, Duncan Robinson, Riaz, Jackie Manoj are all performing well. special mention should be made of sohrabs 3-7 and elliots 3-8 game changers. Congratulations too to Michael burns on his first spell with the lions taking 2-10 off 6 overs.

March saw the singapore Cricket association's annual awards night and it is with the greatest pride that sCC players and teams featured highly in the country’s top cricket divisions.

2012 DIVISION 1 Premiership Runners up – sCC lions (Captain Rob Hands)best batsman – andrew goldsmith, 455 runsbest bowler – arun Vijayan, 29 wickets (9 clear of the next best)

2012 DIVISION 2Premiership Runners up – sCC tigers (Captain nick Power)best batsman – nick Dorney (sCC Cougars), 591 (including a huge 150)

We would also like to welcome, for the first time in the history of the sCC Cricket section, Diviya gK, who is the current singapore national ladies cricket team captain. Having a year at home from her medical studies in australia, Diviya wants to plays as much cricket as possible, and between both the sCa and the sCC she has become dual registered to enable her to achieve just that. Diviya is not only an existing JsM from the Hockey section, but she has also represented singapore in the ladies national team in several international tournaments in the region and plays in the men’s leagues in new south Wales whilst studying. Diviya is determined to make an impact for the sCC and a very determined lady, so let’s please make her welcome.

early days it may be, but the section understands there are four more months of intensive competition ahead of them, and the buzz within suggests 2013 is a “no pain no gain year”. next time you wander down to the Padang on a saturday or sunday, you might want to stop by for a few overs and watch the best players in singapore, because they all come from the singapore Cricket Club and they’re on a mission.

earlier this year, the serangoon gardens Country Club (sgCC) invited the sCC Darts section for a game of friendly darts. The sCC Darters attended the event in full form and everyone enjoyed a good game of darts.

The first event organised by the new Committee for the calendar year was to host a reciprocal friendly game with the sgCC on the Darts night and was overwhelmingly supported by the section Members.

The darts team from sgCC came well prepared for the match. They enjoyed the warm hospitalityfor which the Darts section prides itself. everyone enjoyed the evening with drinks, good food, spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. both teams played exceptionally well. We allowed the sgCC to win the friendly as a sign of being an excellent host, ensuring our guests leave happy.

The section has set the ball rolling and you can expect more fun darts events in the very near future. The section will be successful with all your support! We are looking forward to your continued participation in our upcoming darts events!

We wish Convener Fathima and her team the very best.

We are now into the Inter-sports Club golf tournament (IsCgt) 2013, having recently played the 1st leg at the renovated sembawang golf Club on 15 March. as Captain it was my first team selection and, not knowing how people perform under competition, I simply picked the top 16 handicappers who made themselves available to form our a Division (6 players under 11 HCP index) and b Division (10 players over 11 HCP index).

sembawang proved to be a tricky course, albeit not too long and a few low handicappers on our team were caught out. overall we did very well and tied for the points lead in a “system 36” stableford competition, although we lost narrowly to sRC on a count –back. There was a steward’s enquiry as we saw, after the event, that one of our team was recorded with gross 102 when he actually shot 94 (he recorded both his own score and his buggy partners score on the same card and sembawang mixed them up) but it made no difference to our points scored in the end.

golf scoring and handicapping systems are complex to some so let me briefly explain. all singapore golfers now use the usPga handicap scoring index system. golfers submit scorecards to their clubs or to the sga who award a HCP index based on their scoring potential on a course of average difficulty (where a HCP 18 golfer could, on a very good day, expect to shoot a net par). Courses are then awarded a slope rating depending on their degree of difficulty and shots can then be added or subtracted to your index to provide a course handicap.

golf is full of statistics. Here are some relating to handicaps.

• There are 60 million golfers in the world and only 5% will ever break gross 80.• The average gross score for men is 95 and for women it is 106.• The USPGA HCP index is based on 96% of the 10 best rounds taken from your last 20 rounds, it is not your average score.• According to the USPGA you should average 3 shots over your handicap.• If your handicap is correct you should be capable of beating it once in every 20 rounds.• The odds on a 16 handicap player beating net 80 are 1,138 to 1, or once in 54 years of playing golf (based on the number of games played by the average golfer).• The odds on that player breaking 80 twice extend to 14,917 to 1 or twice in 710 years of playing!

In the last round of the IsCgt 2012 played at orchid two guys scored 46 and 44 points each. In simple terms one beat his handicap by 8 shots, the other by an amazing 10 shots. There were actually quite a few players who scored more than 40 points on that day. The odds on that happening, assuming their handicaps were correct were enormous! In the uK guys with false handicaps are called bandits, in the us they are sandbaggers and here they have the delightful name, buayas!

For the 1st leg of the IsCgt 2013 the organizing club, our dear friends from Changi, chose to use system 36. all cards are marked with gross scores and the scoring club secretly selects 6 holes to gauge your handicap based on gross over par on those holes, this is then used to form your course handicap.

I have a copy of the scores for all players of all teams and seven players beat their official handicap indexes. one player beat his index by 10 shots which is statistically unimaginable! system 36 sorts out those players who have a false handicap, whether by accident or by design and altogether make for a fairer contest between competing players and clubs. not one player scored more than 39 points and only a few beat the 36 point par score. I hope it is used again in the forthcoming rounds of the IsCgt.

For the record, our own ex-captain allan Muir was the best score of the day, shooting a gross 77 off a course handicap of 8 and scoring 39 points. other notable performances came from Matthew streeton with 38 points and Karamjeet with 37 points. Well done to all the team and thanks for supporting me and the section.

next dates and venues for the IsCgt legs are:2nd leg – 31 May: to be played at Ria bintan3rd leg – 30 august: to be played at Warren 4th leg – 18 october: to be played at Jurong or orchid CC

once again I will be asking for those with low and medium handicaps to make themselves available for selection.

The new netball sectioon Committee 2013

LOOKING BACK & MOVING FORWARDS scribe: Rachael bell | Convenor: Kerry Jane brown

still riding on the success of the first netball International 7s tournament in February, the netball section is looking forward to a great season ahead and is delighted to announce that we have secured our first official sponsor of the section, "The Retrospective".

Found at 21 Keong saik Road, close to Club street, The Retrospective bar & Restaurant will transport you back to the 80s and 90s serving up a variety of old school food dishes from england and France such as scotch eggs, Crepe suzette and steak Diane.

even better is the fact that whilst waiting for your food, you can play arcade games including Pacman whilst listening to your favourite 80s and 90s music – what more do you want on a night out? We are all very excited at the prospect of the benefits of this sponsorship to the section and us individually.

back on the court – the netballing year has kicked off with the 3rd sCC netball Friendly league and half way through our First team, The Hawks, are holding their ground against the likes of the mighty nZCC and bedok and currently sit in the top three of their division, an excellent result given the number of new players in the team.

The eagles are as determined as ever and improving every week. Having secured some good wins against bedok and nZCC, they have everything crossed for a top half of the table finish when the league ends later this month.

There will be a few weeks rest before the first netball singapore league starts in mid-May and with skills and fitness training

already under way, we hope to have another successful league and enter two ladies teams and one mixed team. as always we will keep you posted with how we are getting on.

A FEBRUARY TO FORGETscribe: andy Douglas | Convenor: terence noe

the singapore rugby season closed in mid-March with the sCC ending on a disappointing note particularly as the first half of the season had promised so much.

In the Premiership, the sCC 1st XV were top of the league and unbeaten with just three games to go until the mounting injury list took its toll with Murray Wylie, Matt Head, and John Judges all suffering from season ending injuries, and with other injuries to skipper simon etheredge, and the unavailability of the influential Casey Mee and Valu Raturibi, it meant that resources were strained beyond breaking point and we were pipped at the post for the league title and surprisingly went out in the final play of the semi-final.

the tankards suffered from second season syndrome in the Premiership and found it difficult to recreate the passion and organisation of the previous season as well as the other clubs no longer being surprised by how good they were. With last year’s tankards Chris Harkins, Javin singh and oli Rey moving up to the 1st XV, it was a challenge to replace such talented players and despite taking a few clubs to close finishes, the tankards ended up finishing fifth, just short of a play-off spot.

the Cougars who had started the season so well having lost just one match in the first round of games in the Championship, were looking certainties for a grand final spot. However having to support both the 1st XV and tankards in terms of players moving up, the Cougars too were caught short and despite beating oldham 1st XV, lost surprisingly to a saints 1st XV which left them in a must-win battle with an undefeated Wanderers 2nd team to reach the grand final. It was a cracking game with the Cougars ahead with just ten to play, but Wanderers sneaked it at the end.

In the Conference, the lions were a model of inconsistency and finished the season firmly in mid-table whereas the growlers finished with the same win-loss record as a much younger Wanderers 3rd XV but lost out on bonus points, which was probably a fair reflection of their eventual third place finish for a team that regularly included players well into their 50s and on occasion, 60s.

Fielding five teams meaning 120+ players pulling on the black and gold jersey every week was no mean feat and credit should go to everyone involved at sCC Rugby. However such demands stretched our resources to the limit, particularly in complying with the sRu regulations that meant players could not play for the same team in the same division which had a massive adverse effect on team performances.

the off season will be a time to reflect, recharge and regroup so as to come back stronger next year and once again deliver the performances and results expected of the premier rugby club in singapore. there is good reason for optimism – we had a record number of new players join the Rugby section and have unearthed some real talent and quality. these young men in their twenties will drive the section forward.

on a lighter note there were quite a few growlers out in Manila in mid-March as the silver-haired cavaliers participated in the annual Manila tens Vets tournament.

Despite being drawn in a tough pool, the growlers acquitted themselves well trashing rivals HKFC old Contempibles and Kowloon specials but going down to eventual winners the Fijian golden oldies who had flown all the way from suva.

notable events included the return to the paddock of Robbie “the shoe” Wilkins, as well as fine performances by Cris. P. Duck, and Johnny gorman and an impressive cameo effort from andy Douglas who showed all young aspiring tourists exactly how to buffalo.

a fantastic weekend was had by all, sunshine, banter and some memorable Vets rugby that left everyone in high spirits and with some great memories by which to end another season. those memories will undoubtedly be joined by tales from the mini-tour to Jakarta in mid-May which will give everyone the chance to get together for some proper team-building and a great weekend away in one of asia's biggest nightlife cities, as well as taking on Jakarta IsCI Komodos at their new ground in Jagorawi.

Please support one of our former sCC rugby players, stevie Young(2004-07) who is doing a sponsored 350km cycle across nepal for the charity "body and soul" in support of HIV sufferers in the uK. If you would like to donate, please do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/stevieyounglopez best wishes!

NEWS FRONTsCC Firsts are well on their way to winning the Cosmopolitan Football league for the fourth consecutive time and hope to wrap this up in the next few games. They are still in the Cosmo Cup competition too and will hope to achieve a historic quadruple double. This is an amazing achievement and full credit to the entire squad led by owen Monaghan.

With sCC tigers winning their respective esPZen league recently, and the sCC strollers about to win the equatorial Football league, competitive soccer at the sCC has never been stronger and we need to consolidate and become more strong. Thirds and lions have started their midweek campaigns on the Padang and all is going well thus far. Chris Pereira is getting the nFl team ready for another go at the nFl Div 1 title and we are all fully behind him. SCC SOCCER SIxESWork continues to bring you this prestigious tournament on the Padang on the weekend of 17, 18 and 19 May. I can tell you we are in serious discussions with nigel Winterburn to be our guest for the weekend and I am cautiously optimistic we will close the deal and have him with us. nigel played many games for arsenal and was capped for england and we are delighted to welcome him to singapore.

The tournament itself promises to be a superb one with newcastle Jets from australia and several top teams from asia participating. We will again be sponsoring underprivileged children from Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand who will stay with various Members of the soccer section during the weekend. The section Dinner and awards night will be held at The Padang Restaurant on Friday 17 May which should be a jam packed affair. THE PADS by glyn VinceThis season has seen a very positive start from the whole squad and with the introduction of training on Monday nights, benefits can be seen. a relatively strong squad has been assembled at The Padang and with one or two new additions, the Pads are a force to be reckoned with. Pads stalwart and legend Dirk Paulsen, has rolled back the years and been putting in world class performances. The side has hit 28 goals in the first 12 matches led by alex Khan and boon and well supported by Jas bhens.

The defence has been well marshalled by PtI Paul Paffett, steve Vincent and Mummy “Woodentop” Whibley. We have been playing with flair and confidence so much so that Charlie Ransford even took the time to get married. Mark Patel was the early recipient of the Café de Paris most offside player of the month award and brian lavelle has broken the guinness book of Records for having his head in a blue bucket for more than 10 minutes. We have a very large squad and everyone gets a game and that’s important as we uphold the traditions of the Pads.

I am also planning ahead for our annual Phuket Cup match versus HKFC and will work on the dates and age requirements and ensure we have a strong sCC Veterans side to compete and win back the trophy. all in all, a great start to the season and to a new era of the Pads (…more than just football) and Charlie getting married without telling us! CHINESE NEW YEAR CUP by glyn VinceFirst leg – sRC Veterans 0 sCC Veterans 4second leg – sCC Veterans 5 sRC Veterans 2(aggregate score 9-2 to sCC) a glorious first leg performance away to our “friends” from down the other end of the Padang, saw us win 4-0 and literally put the gold and black ribbons on the CnY cup for the sCC. goals from boon and Jas saw us totally dominate the first leg and certainly upset our opponents considerably. It was befitting that the soccer Convenor himself, sir graham Dickson, calmly slotted home the all-important penalty that broke the hearts of sRC.

What was a professional and disciplined performance in the first leg, became the complete opposite in the return second leg at the sCC Padang. The opposition came out determined to at least get back some pride and they found themselves a goal up after "Woodentop" Whibley scored a great solo goal to give the visitors the lead. boon pulled a goal back only to see gordon Deas heading another corner straight into the back of Paddy Reads head to make it 2-1 at half time. The second half saw a different performance. Well led by Mickey Drake we emerged as comfortable 5-2 winners on the day and for the first time ever saw, the sCC scoring all 11 goals. boon and Jas were again among the scorers and gordon managed to get one right at the end to seal a superb victory.

Congratulations to the squad and selectors for a well-earned victory and the Cup stays where it belongs.

Congratulations to the respective squads and to owen Monaghan, Michael Drake, anthony Houlahan and Richard Pugh who manage these sides so well.

The soccer section is stronger than ever and long may that continue as we have well and truly knocked them all off their perches.

TOUR TO MELBOURNE, 30 JANUARY – 3 FEBRUARY 2013at end January the squash section travelled to Melbourne. The team competed against the MCC, the Kooyong lawn tennis Club and the RaCV over three days of competitive squash and enjoyed exceptional hospitality from their hosts. The line-up composed of John betts, Miles gooseman, oliver Palmer and sarat Chandran with nick Cochrane as non-playing Captain.

The tour opened with a fantastic dinner in the historical long room of the MCg where the squash team joined their cricketing counterparts who had competed against the MCC that day.

The first match against the MCC was played the following day at the Melbourne Real tennis Club with the sCC prevailing 3-1. all games were close and the tie was not decided until the very last game when sarat rallied back to victory. another enjoyable evening was spent in the company of the MCC squashers and again they proved to be excellent hosts and company.

The following morning saw the sCC team take on the Kooyong Club, a beautiful club with grass tennis courts as far as the eye can see. Despite some sore heads the sCC team performed strongly again. The highlight of the day was a bbQ at the home of bert armstrong, the squash Collector (do pay a visit to his website www.squashcollection.com) who amazed all with his

ubiquitous collection of squash rackets and squash memorabilia contained in a squash court within his home. His red wine collection wasn't bad either!

The final match was against the RaCV Club in the centre of Melbourne, another impressive sporting venue with sCC pushing hard to finish the tour undefeated. again the team were treated to great hospitality from the home team afterwards and departed Melbourne having seen the best of Victoria squash, as well as food and drink. We look forward to all three Melbourne clubs touring singapore in the future.

TRIANGULAR CUP, 1 – 3 MARCH 2013a touring party of 12 comprising 10 players and two supporters left singapore for Calcutta on the evening of 28 February for the annual triangular Cup between Madras Cricket Club, Calcutta Rackets Club and singapore Cricket Club.

our hosts, Calcutta Rackets Club, put us up at the tollygunge Club which boasts its own golf course as well as all other facilities you would expect in a resort. great accommodations! a round of golf for some and shopping for the others dominated the following day before we all assembled back at the tollygunge to go to the Calcutta Rackets Club for our first match against the hosts.

The format of the matches was five singles and two doubles. We dominated the singles, winning three out of the five matches but lost both doubles in some really close matches. We were desperately unlucky in the fourth singles where our ladies junior player, shiyuan, was in the driving seat in the fifth and final set with good, controlled squash. However, two lucky breaks for her opponent allowed Calcutta to win the tie and as a result the match 4-3.

We played Madras the following morning where we proved too strong in the singles, winning four out of five to seal a 4-3 win over Madras. However, with Calcutta winning their match against Madras in the evening, we relinquished the triangular Cup we had held for the past two years.

The prize presentation and closing dinner was held on saturday evening. Kevi seth, Calcutta’s evergreen no. 1 singles player and current club president, welcomed everyone and this was

followed by a round of speeches by the captains of the three clubs as well as an exchange of t-shirts. We did not come away totally empty handed as Jonnah, our Premier ladies player, was named the player of the tournament. truly well-deserved for an outstanding performance!

Calcutta were great hosts as always and every single one of the touring party had a wonderful time. We look forward to the next edition of the triangular Cup in Madras in 2014. after a long and highly successful tenure, Zoher handed over responsibility for the triangular to Kristen and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for organising a great tour.
