GUIDE TO TASTINGS An overview of each tasting and event INFORMAL, WALK-AROUND TASTINGS Relaxed, fun and very enjoyable
ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIRWe cordially invite you to join us for our biggest wine tasting of the year! This May the London Wine Trade Fair once again comes to town, and with it a number of our top growers from throughout the world, many of whom will join us at this special event to present over 50 wines.
This informal, walk-around tasting is therefore an excellent opportunity to explore the range of wines on offer from The Society’s extensive portfolio. As ever we will be joined by some of our favourite winemakers, their representatives and The Society’s buyers will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
As always, for those wanting to enter into the spirit of the fair, proceedings will be rounded off with a mystery wine competition for those wanting to test their blind-tasting skills. So come one, come all, and join us for the fun of the fair!

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: CHARDONNAY AND PINOT NOIR
Chardonnay and pinot noir are responsible for some of the finest still and sparkling wines in the world.
Both of these time-honoured wine grapes have become world-renowned exports from beyond their Burgundian heartlands, and produce wines in a wide array of styles. Join us as we sample 20 wines, spanning both classic expressions and some enticing finds from further afield.
Chardonnay is one of the most versatile white grapes on the planet, responsible for the steely freshness of Chablis, rich honeyed wines from countries such as Argentina and South Africa, and the lean lemon-fresh flavours so popular in Australia currently. Pinot noir, capable of producing divinely scented, gloriously fruity wines that express their origins with particular honesty and vividness, remains many a connoisseur’s desert-island red. Though it reaches its most sublime heights in Burgundy, there is no shortage of remarkable examples from a variety of sources worldwide. Both pinot and chardonnay also form the basis of the majority of Champagnes, not to mention many other regions’ sparkling wines.
Those joining us at this informal walk-around tasting are therefore in for a treat! Sparkling wines, Burgundy and a number of examples from across Europe and the new world will all be on show as we explore the flavours that make these two grape varieties so eternally popular with winemakers and wine drinkers alike.

ITALY: LA DOLCE VITAItaly is home to some of the world’s oldest wine-producing regions and a staggering range of indigenous grape varieties. From the light, aromatic whites of Orvieto and Soave, and the ethereal nebbiolos of Piedmont, to the spicy, herb-scented primitivo and aglianico varieties in the south, there is a plethora of options on offer. In this relaxed walk-around tasting we make our annual foray into this richly varied world.
We are delighted to welcome top-class growers such as Allegrini and Pieropan from the Veneto. You will be able to compare different growers’ Barolo and taste Brunello di Montalcino in magnums as well as trying out delicious wines from Sicily and the south, including the legendary Graticciaia.
Please be aware that we’d expect this tasting to sell out fast, so do make sure you don’t miss out on this opportunity to discover more about the vast, fascinating world of Italian wines with the people who make them.

YOU’D SWEAR BLIND…Open your mind and your palate, cast those preconceptions aside and get ready for a tasting with a difference! At this ever-popular Society tasting guests are invited to focus solely on what’s inside the bottle, rather than on it…
The identities of the wines will be concealed throughout the evening, allowing us to sip, indulge and enjoy with nothing to influence us except the aromas and flavours in the glass.
All we ask is that you decide how much you like each wine! At the end of the evening, we will ask you to vote for your favourites with a show of hands before unveiling the wines.
You may well find some new favourites, and we can certainly guarantee a few surprises!

WINE CHAMPIONSA buzz of excitement runs round The Society’s offices each year when our buyers complete a series of blind tastings to find the best of the best of our range. Now it’s time to enjoy the winners!
The buyers taste blind to allow complete impartiality, the winners being simply those wines that give most pleasure to drink now. We have chosen a selection of 20 winners from across all styles to be included at this tasting to give you an idea of just what our buyers are looking for.
At the end of the evening we will give you the opportunity to vote for a number of the winning wines and decide your personal favourites with the traditional show of hands.

‘BORDEAUX OXYGENE’: BREATHING NEW LIFE INTO A CLASSICClaret lovers are cordially invited to taste the future of Bordeaux at this special walk-around tasting with the Bordeaux Oxygene group. Friends since childhood, these 18 young and dynamic winemakers have set out to breathe some fresh oxygene into their world-renowned region and ensure that Bordeaux remains innovative and relevant in the 21st century.
Members of the group joining us include Sylvie Courselle of Château Thieuley, Jean-Baptiste Bourotte of Clos l’Église, Matthieu Cuvelier of Clos Fourtet and Château Poujeaux, Jean Triaud of Saint-Pierre and Château Gloria, and Basaline Despagne of Mont-Pérat and Girolate.
This is a great opportunity to taste some delicious clarets in the heart of London, whilst finding out a little more about what the new Bordeaux generation is up to.

NEW ZEALAND: THE PERFECT PACKAGEIt is often said that the best things come in small packages. In the case of New Zealand’s wines, the saying certainly holds true: what the country lacks in size, when compared to its neighbour across the Tasman Sea, it more than makes up for in quality and character, across a range of styles.
The surge in popularity of New Zealand’s wines has inspired enthusiastic growers to discover and develop new high-quality vineyard sites across both islands. As a result, wine regions continue to expand with exciting sub-regions and producers emerging all the time. Where sauvignon blanc once dominated it now finds itself challenged by fresh chardonnays, steely rieslings and stunning pinot noirs to name but a few.
At this informal, walk-around tasting members will sample a broad range of wines from The Society’s current List in the company of winemakers and representatives from top wineries including Dog Point, Greywacke and Craggy Range. We hope you’ll join us for the chance to learn a bit more about New Zealand’s wines with those that know them best.

ALSACE: VARIETAL VARIETYAlsace is justifiably a favourite region for the thousands of tourists who visit each year, but it is not just the picture-postcard scenery that draws people here. Alsace’s wines run the gamut from bone dry to intensely sweet, offering something for every palate.
Rightly famous for its white wines, Alsace boasts remarkable flint-edged rieslings, spicy gewurztraminer, food-friendly pinot gris and much more. The quality of the region’s pinot noir is also worthy of mention, providing as it does a charming alternative to Burgundy.
In Alsace it pays to follow the producer, not only in terms of quality but also because the influence of a producer’s ‘house style’ on the character of their wine is especially marked. Accordingly we are delighted to be joined for this informal walk-around tasting by a number of representatives of the top houses to answer questions and further enlighten us about this special region and its world-class wines.

SWEET WINES WITH HUGEL & DUBOURDIEUThe sweet wines of Alsace and Bordeaux are collectively responsible for some of the most heavenly flavours grapes can produce. We are thrilled to welcome Etienne Hugel (from the Hugel & Fils estate in Alsace) and Fabrice Dubourdieu (from Châteaux Cantegril and Doisy-Daëne in Bordeaux) for what promises to be an unforgettable sweet-wine tasting.
The regions of Sauternes and Barsac are found in the south of Bordeaux. Here sauvignon blanc, semillon and muscadelle combine to produce elegant, complex white wines affected by noble rot. Alsace, further north-east, employs varieties such as riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris to fashion a range of sweet wines that is almost without parallel.
Etienne and Fabrice will talk us through a number of wines from these two fabulous wine regions, drawing from their considerable expertise and The Society’s cellars. The opportunity to taste these regions’ wares in the company of two of their leading lights is a mouthwatering one indeed, and we hope you’ll join us for what promises to be an educational and indulgent evening!

WHITE RHÔNE SUPPER WITH MARCEL ORFORD-WILLIAMS
Like many of the world’s fine-wine hotspots, the Rhône produces world-class white wines that are often overlooked in favour of their more famous red counterparts. Marcel Orford-Williams, who has been buying Rhône wines for The Society for over 20 years, will attempt to redress the balance at this special tasting and supper.
Whilst 12 different grape varieties are used to make white Rhône, marsanne, roussanne, viognier and grenache blanc are the star varieties. Marsanne and roussanne appear most often as a blend, the former bringing body and richly scented fruit and the latter providing delicacy and finesse. Viognier, most famous for its appearances in Condrieu and Château Grillet where it is at its apogee, is exotic and subtle, yet conversely full-bodied. On the other hand, grenache blanc, found predominantly in the southern Rhône, gives delightful fresh, apple-like fruit to the blend.
Marcel’s love of the region, as well as his encyclopaedic knowledge of the wines produced there, makes him the perfect guide for this event. To begin, he will talk us through a tasting of six different whites, with Hermitage Blanc and some extremely rare examples set to feature. Proving that Rhône whites are tailor made for food, a light supper will follow with a further selection of Rhône wines (including a red Hermitage and Muscat Beaume de Venise to further show the diversity of this great region).

IN THE PINK: ROSÉ WINE WORKSHOP AT STEVENAGE
This lively workshop will take us on a tour of the delicious world of rosé wines. Once dismissed as a frivolous wine exclusively for warm-weather sipping, rosé has made a dramatic comeback in recent years.
Whilst it is undeniably true that sales of rosé go through the roof when the sun shines, there is much more to these wines than their pretty colour and the visions they conjure of al fresco dining and lazy afternoons.
With wines ranging from dry to sweet and deepest of pink to just the merest hint of colour, rosé has more stylistic diversity than it is often credited for. The nine wines featured at this workshop will cover sparkling pink, the robust deeply coloured wines of Italy and Tavel in France’s southern Rhône, and touching on the delicate pinks of Provence. We hope you can join us.

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CHEESEAND WINE MATCHING
Selecting the best wines to accompany your favourite cheeses should be a breeze following this fun but informative workshop, in which you will be guided through the principles behind successful cheese and wine matching whilst being introduced to both favourite pairings and surprising combinations.
A cheeseboard can be a minefield when it comes to deciding which wines to drink, and in the face of such a dilemma we often turn to the perennial favourite – a glass of port. Our workshop aims to solve this age-old quandary with the help of a selection of artisan cheeses from across Europe. Alongside such tasty treats as Cheddar, goat’s and blue cheeses, there will be wines to match including both conventional and more unusual suggestions.
With plenty of time for questions, plus lots of advice on how best to choose, store and serve cheese, this workshop is a must for all lovers of cheese and wine.

LUNCH AT THE SOCIETY
A warm welcome and a cool glass of fizz will await you in the Cellar Showroom, where we will learn a little about the 142-year history of The Society. A walking tour of the cellars follows, including a chance to look inside our most recently constructed eco-friendly fourth warehouse, which alone holds more than two million bottles of wine.
After the tour a seated four-course lunch (freshly prepared with seasonal ingredients), accompanied by a tasting of five wines, including a fine and rare example from The Society’s archives, will gently take us through to the early afternoon. At the end of lunch a member of The Society’s Tasting Team will give a short talk on the wines and, just for fun, take a vote to discover the favourite wine of the day.
In a nutshell, far more than your average lunch.

MONTREUIL LUNCH AT L’ABBAYE DE VALLOIRES
The setting for this lunch will be the breathtaking Abbey of Valloires, the only complete Cistercian abbey dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
As well as its traditional cloister, its vaulted chapter house and its salons decorated in Louis XV style, the Abbaye also boasts eight hectares of gardens containing a collection of over 4,000 rare plants.
After a four-course lunch accompanied by a selection of wines from the Society cellars, we shall enjoy a guided tour of the Abbaye before spending the afternoon taking in the beautiful grounds.
THREE EXPRESSIONS OF GAUTHIER: LUNCHAT LA GRENOUILLÈRE
Named Chef of the Year by influential French restaurant guide Gault Millau, chef Alexandre Gauthier is at the forefront of creative fine dining. Of his three restaurants in Montreuil, Michelin-starred La Grenouillère is regarded as his finest. We are therefore delighted to be able to host a Wine Society lunch at the restaurant.
Alexandre has constructed a special tasting menu for us which will be matched to a series of wines from The Society’s cellars.
As ever, dishes will be works of art, surprising us with extraordinary flavour combinations.
