JAPAN ADVENTURE PROGRAM

Mr. Kawato, President of the Biwako Kisen Companypaid a formal visit to Dr. Knight in April and met withsome of the students who will be a part of the JapanAdventure Program.

The Foundation is proud to support this programwhich began over 30 years ago. The JapanAdventure is a work­study program that allows LCCstudents a front­row seat to observe Japaneseheritage and culture. During their stay, students willwork aboard the boat "Michigan", a tourist vessel onLake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, where they willgreet tourists who ride the boat to experienceAmerican culture. Students study and live in Otsu,which is Lansing's sister city in Japan.

anniversary of the Distinguished Alumni Awardwhich was established to honor outstanding alumniwho achieve a high level of professionalaccomplishments and made significant personalcontributions through their involvement incommunity service.

The Lansing Community College Alumni Associationhas selected Dr. Annette Parker as the recipientof the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2015.Dr. Parker is President of South Central College; aMinnesota State Community & Technical College inNorth Mankato & Faribault, Minnesota.

Dr. Parker received her A.A.S. in IndustrialDrafting from LCC in 1990, B.S. in TechnicalEducation from Ferris State University in 1999,M.S. in Career and Technical Education from FerrisState Univeristy in 2001 and Ed.D. in EducationalLeadership from Western Kentucky University in2012. In addition Dr. Parker worked in theTechnical Careers Division at LCC as a facultymember from 1990­2002 and Department Chairfrom 2002­2007.

LCC AWARDED $4.8 MILLIONEQUIPMENT GRANT FROM STATE

Lansing Community College will use the $4.8million grant to rework and expand square footageat West Campus into a Center for ManufacturingExcellence that will accommodate additionalstudents and provide space for new, high­techequipment. To support a longer usable life for thishigh­tech equipment and ensure continuedapplicablity, LCC will create areas that mirrorflexible, advanced manufacturing workingenvironments. This new equipment and expansionis critical to advancing LCC's role in supporting thehigh­skilled hiring needs of regionalmanufacturers.

This project will significantly increase LCC'scapacity for enrollment at West Campus and, inturn, the number of available high­skilledgraduates capable of filling current and projectedhigh­wage job openings. In this way, LCC willstrengthen the ability of area mnaufacturers togrow operations, while helping to reduce the skillsgap of the current workforce. A highly skilledworkforce is critical for area manufacturers tomaintain their competitive position in a globalmarketplace and support growth within the region.

The Foundation is pleased to announce thewinners of the 2015 Eric Zimmerman VisualArts Fund Award. Established in 2001, thepurpose of the fund is to inspire student artists.Winning art is purchased by the Foundation adngiven to the College. Zimmerman art can beseen in the lower level of the Gannon Building,where a fabulous new display has been createdwhere it is visible to other student artits.Winners each received a $400 award for theirwork.

This year's winners are: John Lucas for "FreedSpirit" oil painting on canvas; Katherine Makifor "Junky the Clown" scrap metal sculpture;Samantha Pease for "Journey" water color,and Rachael Wicker for "Magpies" mixedmedia collage. Congratulations!

After LCC, I plan to continue education; MichiganState University first to obtain a Bachelor's inComputer Science, then Davenport Univeristy forthe 2 year Masters in Tech Careers program theynow offer. I would like to eventually end up as anIT PMP (Information Technology ProjectManagement Professional) and though there is aquicker way to get there, I want the experience asthe journey will prove most beneficial.
