A Word from Your DS: Trusting Psalm 121 in the Midst of Appointment Changes

This is the season of change for United Methodist churches and clergy as pastoral appointments are planned, implemented and announced, and the lives of many people – pastors and their families, churches and their members – are dramatically altered. Sometimes these changes are expected and welcomed, or if not welcomed at least accepted with calm, as in the case of a pastor attaining retirement and a church realizing that it is time for a new beginning with a new leader. Sometimes, though, these changes are very hard, as congregations grieve the departure of a pastor who has been well-loved and very effective, whom they had hoped would stay indefinitely, or as pastors are appointed to new charges where their gifts are needed, but they and their families face various losses– a spouse’s job, children’s friendships, and the comfort of working in a ministry that is familiar. Congregations receiving a new pastor may be understandably worried about whether their new leader will be effective. Pastors and their families may wonder, “Will we have any friends in our new community?” Appointment changes are indeed challenging.

Over the years as I have faced appointment changes, a few times in my own ministry and countless times now as a DS sharing the responsibility of appointing others, I have found tremendous assurance in the words of Psalm 121. The psalm-writer affirms an abiding faith in the God who made heaven and earth, who watches over his people, and promises to keep their lives. He ends with this promise: “The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.”

There will be a lot of going out and a lot of coming in – departures and welcomes, farewells and new beginnings, tears of loss and the excitement of new relationships – in the months ahead, and I am grateful for this promise that God is in the midst of all this change. For pastors, for their families, for congregations, and for communities this is a time for trusting that God is at work and for looking for all the ways in which we can join God’s work and be in tune with the new things God is doing.

Here are some of the changes that we will be experiencing in our Catskill Hudson District, effective July 1st:

Four of our pastors are retiring, namely Mark Del Giudice, Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman, Gerald Norris, and Bernice “B” West.

Mark Del Giudice entered pastoral ministry in 1996 after working in industry as a plant manager for many years, and also doing volunteer work with youth in a Korean church where his wife, Song, was a member. He served the Great Hill UMC in Seymour, Ct. for nine years before his appointment to First UMC in Walton in 2005. In 2009 Mark was also appointed to Bloomville UMC while continuing in the Walton church. Mark’s skill in organizing and

3

leadership was particularly significant when Walton was ravaged by devastating floods in 2006. He was instrumental in guiding the recovery work as teams of volunteers came to help homeowners rebuild their homes, and in the work of restoring the Walton church building which had been severely damaged. Over the years he has also had a special interest in helping the church reach out to people in need, with a weekly soup supper, a daily lunch program for kids in the summer, and a huge community-wide Christmas dinner all becoming a major part of the Walton church’s ministry. Mark and Song will be moving to Yonkers, where they own a home, and Mark intends to use this coming year as a kind of sabbatical as he considers the ways he might serve God in the future. Both the Walton church and the Bloomville UMC will be entering new parishes this summer. Walton will be part of the new Western Catskills Parish, along with Colchester Community Church, East Branch/Harvard UMC, and The Roscoe United Church. Dale Ashby (currently serving Colchester and East Branch) will be the lead pastor, joined by Joanne Utley, currently pastor of the Bridgehampton UMC in Long Island. Joanne’s appointment is half-time in the parish and half-time as Communications Director and editor of the Vision for the annual conference.

The Bloomville Church will be part of the new Delaware Headwaters Parish, along with Hobart, Township and Stamford. David Collins and Romana Abelova (a clergy couple) will be serving as the new pastors of the parish, David at full-time and Romi half-time. David is departing from the Roscoe church and also the Callicoon UMC, while Romi is concluding two years as pastor of Hankins UMC. The new appointment for Hankins and Callicoon has not yet been made.

Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman entered pastoral ministry in 1989, serving for two years at Holmes and Wiccopee, and two more years in Lakeville, Ct. but the bulk of her service has been in two charges, namely Grahamsville/Sundown (1993-2004) and Hobart/Township (2004-2013.) Lorraine, despite

growing up in an urban setting, has become a wonderful practitioner of small town ministry – learning the ways of farm life and walking through her rural communities to meet people and hear their stories. Her gift of nurture and care with the elderly and those in the hospital has been a very significant part of her ministry. I was especially grateful for her pastoral gifts when my parents were part of Lorraine’s church in Grahamsville for three years. Lorraine was a loving pastor to them and participated in the memorial services for both my father and mother. As Lorraine retires she and her husband Peter will be living in Unadilla, NY, not far from Oneonta.

As noted above, Hobart and Township will now become a part of the Delaware Headwaters Parish.

Our third retiree is Gerald Norris, who entered pastoral ministry after a full career as a mechanic with Central Hudson. He served his home church, Andes UMC, for several years before having to give up his duties because of ill health, but in 2010, his health restored, he accepted the appointment to Lanesville and Shandaken. Gerald’s loyalty is especially appreciated by this DS, for it was Gerald’s intention to retire in 2012, but when no new appointee could be found he agreed to continue for one more year so that Lanesville and Shandaken would not be left without a pastor. Although no appointment can be announced as of this writing, I am keeping my promise to Gerald and his wife Maria that he can indeed retire in peace this year, enjoying their home in Andes.

“B” West became a Local Pastor in 1984 after working in a legal office for many years. She served at Holmes and Wiccopee from 1984 until1989, and at Dover Plains and Wingdale from 1989 until 1997 when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Retirement, however, is an elusive concept for UMC pastors. In 2004 a pastor was needed for B’s home church, Germantown, and the other three churches on the charge, Elizaville, West Taghkanic and Glenco Mills. The DS asked B to serve on a less-than-fulltime basis, and she has given these churches a wonderful ministry of caring. Over the years she has impressed this DS with her compassion for the people under her care, and also her amazing stamina – preaching four times a Sunday when over 80 years of age. She has served most faithfully, but now has come to the conclusion that her failing strength requires her to completely retire.

B’s successor in the Elizaville charge has not yet been named.

Two of our pastors, John Thomason and Dorothy Caldwell, will be leaving Catskill Hudson for appointments in other districts.John, who came from Texas in 2007 to assume the pastorate of Monticello UMC, and who has also served the Liberty UMC since 2009, will be appointed to Woodbury UMC in Connecticut. His successor at Monticello and Liberty will be Rev. Robert Kersten, currently serving at Grahamsville and Sundown. As of this writing, the appointment to Grahamsville/Sundown has not been made, though a pastor has been designated by the Bishop and will be introduced shortly.Dorothy has been pastor at Reservoir UMC and Phoenicia UMC since 2010, and was a part of our district while serving New Paltz, beginning in 2003. She will be moving to Monroe, NY, to serve in that congregation. Her successor will be Mark Allen. Mark and his wife Janice currently reside in Pawling, where Mark has been the pastor for eight years.

We are also bidding farewell to Jerome Kennedy, who is graduating from Drew this month, and who has served as a student pastor at the Hillsdale and North Hillsdale churches. The new pastor there will be Lee Gangaware, who is retiring from his ministry in Lyndenhurst, LI and moving to northwestern Connecticut. As a new retiree Lee will serve on a part-time basis, commuting from the home in Colebrook, Ct. that he and his wife Polly have recently purchased.

To all of those who are going out, or coming in, or sharing in the goings and comings associated with appointment changes, may the One who created the mountains be your strength and assurance!

Your DS and Friend, Jim Moore

One more personal note about appointments: I shared this news a few months ago, but some people have asked about my appointment status, realizing that I am in my 6th year as DS and that six years is the normal term. Bishop McLee has asked me to continue as superintendent for another two years, so, God willing, I will continue in this ministry until 2015. I appreciate the support and encouragement I have received from so many of you, and ask that you keep me in prayer as I goforward in this role.

So, here is the plug to be at Camp Epworth on Saturday, May 11th. The details are included in this edition of the Courier. I know you will all be in for a wonderful experience.

As one of the District Lay Leaders I encourage you to come to this event for the networking and connectionalism it provides. Get to know your neighbors across the District.

We will be electing some new District Lay Leaders on May 11th. Come – welcome them and make yourself and your church known to them.

We will also say good-bye to District Lay Leader Fran Reed. Fran has decided to retire from this assignment and others she has held in her local church and district. Life is a series of wonderful passages and growth and new beginnings. Fran is in transition to one of those new beginnings. I, personally, will miss Fran on many levels. I have enjoyed working with Fran in several areas and find her commitment to any task she takes to be one of thoroughness and care and love. I enjoy her sense of humor. I admire her assurance in her faith. I just plain love FRAN REED and will miss working with her. Fran, may your new beginnings be filled with God’s abundant love – joy – peace– hope – faith – wonder and grace.

Peace and Blessings to All, Margaret HoweDistrict Lay Leader

Ecuador VIM 2013 – March tripBy Susan Woodworth

The Ecuador VIM 2013 trip in March once again included five team members from our Catskill Hudson District! Stephanie Parsons, Linda Mellor, Lynne Taylor, Bob Kersten and Susan Woodworth joined with Oscar Destruge, Arturo Maine and Sonia Jermin on another wonderful mission of “Love in Action” in South America.

We traveled to and through many different regions of Ecuador - from the mountains of Quito and Otavalo to the cities of Santo Domingo and El Carmen, to the charming fishing village of Mompiche on the Pacific Coast. We worked on the building project at the UMC in El Carmen in high heat and humidity. We called ourselves “Team Grunt,” proudly doing a lot of hard physical labor (grunt work) that in our country might be done by machines and equipment. We facilitated Vacation Bible School for the children of the community. We’dbeen told to prepare for 40 children to come at 4 pm each day. Imagine our surprise (understatement) when 120 children showed up on the first day…. at 2 pm!!! It’s a good thing that FLEXIBILITY is one of the most important mottos of any VIM trip. Subsequent attendance numbers were even higher – all the way to 200, on Thursday! We could not have managed without God’s grace and the tremendous energy and creativity of Devora Vivas Yong. She is the daughter of the pastor of the El Carmen UMC. Her mother, Irlanda, also a pastor, had coordinated and planned for our lunches and for many of the VBS activities of the week. Just before we were to arrive in Ecuador, Irlanda passed away unexpectedly. Devora, in the midst of her grief, decided to take a week off from her job and family (5 hours away) to carry on the work her mother had planned. We were all deeply touched by Devora’s loving presence and lively spirit.

The October VIM trip to Ecuador will continue the work we began in March. We hope to complete the construction of the addition on the church, while also installing a water filter system and conducting another VBS. Devora has been invited to be a part of VBS, if her schedule allows!

If you have always wanted to take part in a NYAC VIM trip and would like to learn more about Ecuador VIM opportunities, please look for us at the May 11 District Conference Day at Camp Epworth. We also invite you to prayerfully consider joining the team for the October 2013 VIM trip. to Ecuador. Your heart will be warmed!

Bishop McLee Helps Andes UMC Celebrate 200 Years

By Tom Coddington

When the Andes (NY) United Methodist Church celebrated its 200th

anniversary on Sunday, April 21, Bishop Martin D. McLee, resident bishop of the New York Annual Conference, was the featured speaker.

The Andes church began in 1812 as a Methodist Society, which met for prayer and Bible study in people's homes, and was served by circuit riders in its early years. The first church was erected in 1838, and the current building was built in 1863

The church's organizing committee had been working on a celebration since early in 2012, and had hoped to hold it during the fall. When the conference changed bishops, that was not possible, but when it was found that Bishop McLee had the April date available, it turned out to be very satisfactory.

All of those who attended the event were very impressed with the service. Participation involved not only the bishop, but also the Rev. James W. Moore, superintendent of the Catskill Hudson District, the current pastor, the Rev. L. Lawrence Dunlap; associate pastor, the Rev. Adrian K. Todd; and former pastors of the church (directly or through the Upper Catskills Larger Parish) — the Rev. Timothy J. Riss, the Rev. Kenneth R. Baldwin and the Rev. Ralph E. Darmstadt, and Pastors GeraldC. Norris and Karen Y. Ogborn.

The former pastors also spoke briefly of their experiences in the Andes church. Letters were also read from other former pastors who were unable to attend.

“God Is up to Something!” declared Bishop McLee on a number of occasions during his sermon, which had that title. Not only did he offer encouragement to the church, but he did it in a very vibrant way, even including a “rap” session and an “I say, you say,” conversation with thecongregation.

Bishop Martin McLee chats with former Andes UMC Pastor Gerald Norris and his wife, Maria, following the worship service at the celebration of the church's 200th

anniversary. At left is Sidney Wilson from the Margaretville UMC and seated between the bishop and Maria Norris is Ruth Kelder from the Halcott UMC. Yoshie Conover photo

Yoshie Conover photo

Also on the agenda were two songs by a choir that included members of four of the churches in the Upper Catskills Larger Parish, with assistance from Revs. Moore and Riss. Kent Brown, music director of the Margaretville UMC, directed the choir, and also performed an organ-piano duet with Patricia Brannen, the Andes UMC music director.

Following the service, which included Holy Communion, a meal was enjoyed by all who stayed.
