An Interview With Mary Ellen Lundy by Charles Lundy If you have seen a production of the Henry Players in the past eighteen years, Mary Ellen Lundy was probably involved. Whether working backstage, organizing costumes, acting, directing, or helping make decisions on the Board of Directors, Ms Lundy has been active with the organization since their beginning. Her favorite role on stage was the title one in Driving Miss Daisy, but she most recently appeared as the Countess in The Women. She has also directed several shows for The Henry Players including, among others, The Sound of Music, The Miracle Worker and Hello Dolly. She prefers directing because it allows for more control over the end product. Next winter Ms Lundy is set to direct the classic To Kill a Mockingbird.

Personally, Ms Lundy is a school teacher of forty years who works presently with special needs children. She formerly taught high school English and drama. She also directs her church choir and

is an active member of Luella Baptist Church. She is the mother of four and soon to be the grandmother of two.

When asked about her involvement with The Henry Players, Mrs. Lundy said that she enjoyed working with them because they are like a family. They care about each other and are willing to pitch in and help no matter the task. People from all walks of lifecome together to create something special for themselves and the community. They take pride in their accomplishments and in the pleasure they give to others.

The season lineup of shows is meant to appeal to a broad audience. To learn more about Henry County’s community theatre visit their website at www.thehenryplayers.com

An Interview With Senior Jake McMahan by Charles Lundy Luella High School senior Jake McMahan is just like any regular student. He attends class, has plans for college, and a date for the prom, but he has fought his whole life to to get to this point. Jake was diagnosed as an infant with Norries syndrome. The doctor told his parents that he would never walk, talk, see, or hear. The doctor was right on only one- Jake remains blind. He developed normally in all other areas and at three years of age began attending a day program for children with handicaps. Until the age of fourteen Jake attended the Georgia Academy for the Blind where he became proficient in Braille and learned to use new technology designed for the blind. Then he took a big step. He entered public school at Luella High.

At Luella Jake learned to navigate the campus along with 2000 others. At first he had someone assist him, but now he walks alone with his cane. “I wasn’t going to be confined to a wheelchair. I just couldn’t see. And my mind was fine,” Jake says. His confident “ you can do anything you set your mind to” attitude has brought him over many hurdles.

Jake has become an expert on computer applications for the blind and even won a scholarship for a paper he wrote. He speaks often to groups about accessing technology and has run over 50 radio broadcasts via Facebook(from home studio). He continues to inspire others.

After graduation Jake will attend the Helen Keller School in New York City before entering college. He intends to pursue a career in broadcasting. I asked Jake if there were a chance to gain his sight, would he take it. He said, “No, I wouldn’t. Having vision is just a culture, like being blind. I have spent my whole life learning to live with my blindness and don’t want to learn a new way.”

One Performance will be shadow interpreted, please visit www.henryplayers.com for more information. During shadow interpreted theatre, specially trained ASL interpreters perform as“shadows” alongside the cast members. The shadow actors are integrated into the performance by mirroring the voiced actors on stage, interpreting characters in American Sign Language.
