A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL…

Greetings Comets! It has hard to believe how quickly this year is flying

by. A lot will be happening in May and June. Please stay current with

the upcoming events.

Starting on May 13th our third, fourth and fifth grade students will be

taking the Standards of Learning Assessments. The schedule per class

is listed on p. 3 of the Comet Courier. Remember that attendance at

school during testing is extremely important. Please arrange any out-

of-school appointments for times that will not be in direct conflict with

testing. Thank you!

This month we will begin the student placement process for next year’s

classes. We invite you, our parents, to share information about your

child or family that we do not have access to at school that you believe

would impact your child’s educational placement. Should you choose

this option, please send me a letter and/or complete the Parent

Placement Information Form on p. 17; I respectfully request that you

send it on or before Friday, May 6th. Your input should not request a

specific teacher. It is impossible to grant those kinds of requests and I

know that it can be disappointing when your child does not get into the

classroom of the teacher that you request. Please do not approach your

child’s current teacher to ask who he/she thinks would be the best

teacher for your child. That could potentially be an uncomfortable

situation for both the parent and/or teacher. Please be assured that a

great deal of thought and consideration goes into placing children into

classes at Horizon and we do our best to make the correct placement

choices.

We have included a copy of the 2016-2017 adopted school calendar for

LCPS and Horizon’s Back to School Nights/Kindergarten Parent

Orientation/Open House information. Please refer to this calendar and

dates as you begin long-range planning for next year.

A TESTING REMINDER TO

3rd, 4th and 5th GRADE PARENTS

As part of the Virginia State Assessment Program and the Loudoun County Assessment

Program, the Standards of Learning Tests (SOLs) will be administered to third, fourth and

fifth grade students at Horizon Elementary School next week.

The first day of testing will be on Friday, May 13.

AM testing sessions will begin between 8:00 and 8:30.

PM testing sessions will begin between 11:00 and 11:30.

The students will be taking their SOL tests online.

Please help your child come prepared to take the tests by ensuring that:

- Your child gets plenty of sleep the night before each test

- Your child eats a good breakfast the morning of the test

- Your child is present on the testing dates ON TIME

- Your child is encouraged to put forth his/her best effort on the tests

2ND GRADE IS COLLECTING USED CRAYONS

As a continuation of our fall Project Based Learning experience, 2nd grade will be collecting used/broken crayons from the Horizon community. Each classroom

at Horizon will be placed on a team to see who can collect the most used crayons. The collection started on March 14th and will continue through May 20th. Additional information was sent home the week of March 7th. The 2nd grade students would greatly

appreciate any crayon donations!

Tops all year long? We submit them twice a year, but you can send them in any time. Or, you can hold on to them until the fall for our next class contest! However you do it, just keep collecting

those box tops!

Horizon Elementary Summer Reading Challenge Summer is almost here!

We are sure you have many fun trips, activities and vacations planned this summer. While

these are important, we also want to encourage you to continue to read regularly throughout

the summer break. Horizon Elementary is continuing the tradition of our summer reading

challenge. Students will be challenged to read 1000 (or more!) pages during their summer

break. More information about the 1000 page challenge will be posted on our website in June!

POETRY MASTERS

Each month a selection of poems is available for children in grades 1-5 to memorize and recite. Any child in those grades who wishes to participate may pick up the poem selections from the office any time after May 4th. Horizon's Girls on the Run Team needs your help to make our

community project a success.

This year the girls are collecting 3-10 pound bags of non-prescription cat and dog food, as well

as canned dog and cat food. This pet food will be donated to "The Pet Pantry" of Loudoun

County. Pet Pantry makes sure that people in need have enough food supplies to keep their pets

fed. Bring your donations and put them in the boxes located at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade

hallways by May 16th. Girls on the Run will also be having their 5K practice run/walk on May 9

from 2:45-4:00 here at Horizon Elementary. We are inviting parents, teachers, principals, and

walking buddies to come and cheer the team on from the sidelines. Our goal will be to complete

15 laps around the track. Thanks to all for your support of this season's Horizon GOTR Team!

Hey, Comets! Can you help with Horizon’s Food Rescue Program?

You may have heard of Horizon’s Food Rescue Program. We collect uneaten food in the cafeteria that would otherwise be tossed in the trash and donate it to LINK. The program is in its second year and has been a big success. Parents, you can also help by volunteering to deliver our food to the local shelter. DRESS CODE

The primary responsibility for the proper dress and grooming of students rests with the parent or guardian of each student. The school has the responsibility; however, to see that the cleanliness, dress, and grooming of students does not present a danger to the health or safety of themselves or fellow classmates. Clothing must be in good taste, of a comfortable fit and follow school standards. Students should dress for the “business of school.” Inappropriate attire consists of any clothing that disrupts the learning environment because it is distracting or offensive.

Clothing students should refrain from wearing to school: Short/tight skirts, shorts and/or dresses (must be at least fingertip length) halter or spaghetti string tops without a shirt/sweater over it mid-drift tops that expose the stomach area excessively baggy shorts or pants mesh/see-through athletic shirts without a T-shirt underneath clothing that displays inappropriate language, artwork, symbols, alcohol/drug messages a bandana and/or hat while at school Heelies and/or shoes with wheels Shoes must be worn at all times

Children must wear sneakers/athletic shoes with solid, rubber soles for all physical education classes.

Parents will be called if their child arrives to school dressed inappropriately. It may be necessary for a change of clothing to be brought to school for the child.

Potomac Falls Cluster Clothing Drive

Spring has finally arrived and with that comes the annual cleaning out of the closets. We are collecting gently used out-grown clothing, including

shoes and jackets, that are taking up valuable space in your home. Please bring only clean, gently used or new items in all sizes to

Horizon for our Cluster Clothing Drive.

Horizon will collect different items each week of the drive. See the schedule below.

Horizon is collecting clothes for distribution to the families within the Sterling community during the month of May. Each cluster school will collect clothes, and will come together at Potomac Falls High School for a cluster-wide no-sale clothing sale on Saturday

May 21st starting at 9:00 am until 12:00 pm! Help our students and their families, and help your closets.

All clothes can be dropped off into one of the boxes in the front entrance of Horizon during the month of May.

MSAAC

In April, MSAAC held a meeting with SEAC on Discipline Gaps in Our Schools. Discussion revolved around data that shows a disproportionate amount of minority students and students with disabilities involved in disciplinary action. In addition to reviewing the statistics, MSAAC's focus was to understand how the LCPS system is working on addressing these concerns.

Several panel members were in attendance including :

Where did the time go?! I can’t believe it’s already MAY!!! This school year has gone by way too fast. Comet Walk - where to begin?! THANK YOU (times INFINITY!) Shanyn Deeds for an amazing job on this major fundraiser! It was a huge undertaking and she really stepped up to the challenge! The rain delay didn’t dampen the spirits on Monday - everyone had a great time. A special thank you to our local business sponsors, listed on p. 3.Stay tuned to see if we won the special assembly! We hope to see many of you on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 6:30 pm, for the next HPTA General Meeting which includes the HPTA Executive Board elections for 2016-2017. Nominations can be made up until the election, so please consider volunteering to sit on the 2016-2017 Executive Board. More information on the positions can be located on the Horizon PTA website in the ByLaws. There are currently no nominations for two key positions: Treasurer and School Supply Coordinator. These two positions are in urgent need of candidates for nomination. Please contact Catherine Reidy (creidypta@gmail.com) for more information. We are looking for 3 volunteers who can spare a few hours this summer as PTA Auditors making sure our budget and minutes are all in order. There are only TWO events left for the school year. The Comet Putt Putt Golf Night and the Horizon Multicultural Fun Fair. We have a HUGE need for volunteers for these upcoming events. This year we are incorporating MultiCultural Night Activities for some great additional family fun! We have begun planning and will need lots of wonderful help to make it a huge success! OFFICE REMINDERS

Students are permitted to enter the building each morning at 7:30 am. Those students ordering breakfast may go straight to the cafeteria. All other students will go straight to their classrooms to start unpacking and start their morning routines. The start bell will sound at 7:50 am. The school day begins promptly at 7:50 AM. Students MUST be in their classrooms at 7:50 AM; arriving after that time results in an UNEXCUSED tardy, unless a doctor’s note is provided. Students coming in after 7:50 AM must be escorted into the building by an adult. School dismisses at 2:35 PM. Parents picking up students prior to dismissal are required to sign them out in the main office. All visitors to the building should begin their visit in the main office. Once in the office, you may sign in using the computer located on the front counter. Any forgotten items should be brought to the office. This will cut down on interruptions to the class.

ABSENTEE/TARDY Please email the Horizon absentee email at hrzabsentee@lcps.org, or call the absentee line at 571-434-3261 to report the absence or late to school information for your child.

AFTER SCHOOL PLAN Anytime your child has a change in his/her after school plan, please send a note in with your child in the morning. The office cannot redirect children after school on the basis of a phone call. If an emergency necessitates a

change during the day, you may fax the instructions to us at 703-444-7418.

LOST AND FOUND

Horizon Elementary has areas designated for lost items such as lunch boxes, and clothing. Students who misplace their belongings can check in the Lost and Found that is located outside the cafeteria by the water fountains. Items of value or importance such as glasses, jewelry, and keys are kept in the front office. If your child has lost an item, please encourage them to check in the Lost and Found or with the office secretaries. Items that go unclaimed will be donated to a local charity at the end of the

school year.
