Dear readers and advertisers

Well, we asked you to tell us what you thought of our 16 page April edition of The Village Advertiser - and you certainly did! Thank you for your overwhelming support and enthusiasm. We've talked to so many of you - in person, on the phone and via email - and your response has been really positive. We're producing 12 packed pages this month but we now know that our advertisers and readers are happy for more, so we'll be planning bigger issues in the future.

The relentless cold of those weeks in March and early April are thankfully behind us and we have a lot to look forward to this summer, including in this month of May two Bank Holiday weekends. And there are three events to mark on your calendar and support - The Jazz Picnic, The Babes Ball and The Baby Race at Bluewater. All are seasoned annual events, hugely supported and enjoyed, as well as continuing to raise much needed funds.

The Jazz Picnic will be held on Sunday, 23rd June from 12 noon until 6pm at its usual venue of Manor Field, Hartley. Take a picnic, your family and friends, and have a great afternoon out listening to the music of jazz bands the Radio Rhythmakers and the Mike Richards Big Band. Proceeds go to the Arthritis Research Campaign and tickets are available by phoning 01474 703455 or 01474 709068.

This year’s Baby Race will be held at Bluewater, Greenhithe in aid of Tommy’s on Sunday 30th June. The Baby Race is an 8km sponsored power walk or run with or without your buggy and baby. There will be an aerobic warm up to start and a goody bag to finish, plus entertainment for the children and whole family to enjoy. This event helps fund research into stillbirth, miscarriage and premature birth and provides pregnancy health information for parents-to-be. For more information or to sign up go to www.tommys.org/babyrace.

This year will be the 12th Babes Ball, in memory of Louise Wheeler, who we still remember from the very first one that she organised, despite her illness. Since then, as well as being a fantastic night out, every Babes Ball has continued to raise awareness and huge amounts of money for BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER. Redlibbets Golf Club, West Yoke, Ash, is again this year generously hosting the evening on Thursday, 4th July from 7.30pm to midnight. Tickets are available by phoning Sue Facey on 01474 708260 or Michaela Franklin on 01474 709097. Sue and Michaela are kindly donating four tickets for the Babes Ball as this month's prize in the Wordsearch Competition. An opportunity not to be missed - turn to page 10 to find out more.

Demand for tickets is high every year for both the Jazz Picnic and the Babes Ball, so hurry and don't miss out on yours.

The lucky winner of the April competition was Sandra Madell of Northfleet , who won a Spring Clean courtesy of Cherubs Cleaning and Homecare Limited in Fawkham. The hidden sentence in last month's Wordsearch was ‘Spring seems to be the season to bring out the flowers’. Our lucky winner in the wordsearch competition on our first ever Kid Zone page was Ryan Tapsell of Sevenoaks who won 2 tickets to the Showcase Cinemas, Bluewater, courtesy of us here at The Village Advertiser.

Sadly, we do have to report the sad death in March of Geoffrey Church, aged 68. Geoffrey was one of our long term and most loyal and reliable distributors, who worked with us on The Village Advertiser in the New Ash Green area and, before that, for many years distributing Town & Country Post Magazine when it was owned by Orchard Publishing. He will be a sadly missed member of the community and our condolences go to his family and friends. Donations in memory of Geoffrey are being gratefully received at the Lions Hospice.

Whatever you and your family and friends are doing this Bank Holiday weekend - trips out or get-togethers at home - we'll be in the office when work starts again to help with your advertising enquiries. Call us on 01474 854518 and 01474 707484, or email [email protected]. Advertising sales deadline for the June edition is May 14th.

Now, looking ahead to the next Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, shall we risk it and get out the barbecue!
