    CAVALIER MOTORCYCLE RIDE INJUNE 13TH-14TH

  • with Dylan Gott

We live in one of the most amazing times in American brewing;home brewing and craft brewing are at an all-time high. There wasonce a time when the United States could not compete on the inter-national stage because we did not really produce any beer of note. Ishould stop and qualify here. If your palate is particular to the stan-dard American Pilsner, you can stop reading here as the Miller andBud Lights of the world are all you need from your beer. If youhave a more particular taste, I have some opinions forged frompractice you may enjoy. As I was saying, with the increasedamount of craft brewing in the United States, it can be hard toknow what to try. There is one simple rule, try them all. Its beer, what the worst that can happen? You didnt like the flavor, but youdrank a beer. All-in-all, easy day. For my inaugural op-ed, I willgive you a run down on one of my longest standing favorites, Sum-mit Brewing.

I have always been partial to a hoppy-flavor, and the Extra Pale Ale(EPA) does not disappoint. It has a very full-bodied flavor, and anaesthetically-pleasing dark amber color. When poured, this robustbrew passes Jim Kochs beer lid test, and will full support it on thefresh head. This beer has a very smooth flavor, that I promise youdoesnt disappoint. If there was a beer to try, this one should be onanyones list. This was the first line of the brewery, and has been inproduction since 1986, and is still going strong.

One of their newer beers is the True Brit IPA. An India Pale Alehas a very interesting history (which I learned about while touringthis brewery). Back in the days when traversing the planet tookseveral weeks in wooden ships, there was an inherent problem withspoilage. India Pales Ales have a higher alcohol content to with-stand the trip intact, but I digress. The True Brit is a beer that is ac-tually modeled after the original IPA style and flavor, rather thanthe more common style today. In any event, this beer has a verycrisp, clean, and sharp flavor. Also, should be on anyones list totry. I was truly impressed.

This is the deal, I am not a beer critic with credentials, Im just aguy that loves beer. All I promise to do is give you an honest opin-ion of beers that are worth your time. Until next time, happy suds!

  • BAND PROFILE: SHOVELHEAD / ROCKSTAR ENTERTAINMENT By Mike Peterson

A5: What is RockStar Entertainment all about? RSE: To put it simply, RockStar Entertainment is about bringing fun and a good time to people. Iserved in the Army from Jan 2000 Jan 2004 and if its one thing I learned (among many things)its that if you work hard, you gotta play hard. In life youre going to have stress and if I can alle-viate someones stress through music, karaoke, or just a plain old good time then I have fulfilledthe purpose of RockStar Entertainment.

A5: How long has RockStar Entertainment been around and do you have any highlights ofsome of your work?RSE: RockStar Entertainment started in Bottineau ND in August of 2010. It was started by mywife (Angelina) and I after we moved there in 2009. I had been a karaoke DJ for a company inupstate NY called U-Sing Karaoke, for seven years. I thought I could walk away from it, but itturns out I couldnt, and RockStar Entertainment was born.

We have done many things since 2010. Anything from weddings to graduations, weve evenDJed for a college affiliate of Minot State University for their Registration Day. Weve done a lotof holiday events for businesses, bars and even private/residential. Some of our fondest highlightshave been out in the middle of nowhere doing birthday parties, housing warming parties and plainold life celebration. Being an individual thats partied for a living for almost 11 years now, itshard to pinpoint particular highlights; however I will say that finally getting into Grand Forks andbringing the party to the east side of ND is a huge milestone for RockStar Entertainment.

A5: What can people expect out of a SHoVeLHeaD Concert?SH: An energetic mix of original music and cover songs ranging from Chevelle to DrowningPool/Prong to Rob Zombie. This is a must see show for fans of Hard Rock/Metal.

A5: How long has the band been around and what kind of music do you mostly play/cover?SH: SHoVeLHeaD started in 2009 and primarily plays Hard Rock & Metal. This band wasfounded by guitarist ReKo, and drummer MoDo. Shovelhead has had two iterations of itself sincethe forming, losing their lead guitarist in 2010 to respective differences, and singer/bassist late2011 for personal reasons. MoDo & ReKo pressed onward however, never giving up their dreamand never losing hope. In August 2012, they ran into DeRF, who had been a longtime fan of theband. A few weeks later, LoKi was found at his Karaoke show and was invited to audition for thenew frontman. Pleasantly surprised, they welcomed him into the Shovelhead clan. Since theyhave gotten together in 2012, the band has overcame a few obstacles, including cutting their 5-song EP The Lies We Deem The Truth.

A5: Any funny experiences throughout your journey as a band, and do you guys as a grouphave long term plans?SH: This one was actually a little more recent one for us. Out of the many funny experiencesweve had this one was truly a lesson well learned. ReKo grabbed the wrong guitar for a show inGrand Forks (realizing this exactly three hours before the show) and had todrive 90 miles back to Devils Lake then back to Grand Forks time wasted3hrs 6mins.

As far as our collective goals, we intend to pick up more shows around thestate and sit down this fall to write our first full length album with the newline up, we are hoping to branch out of state and begin touring nationally.

A5: What makes SHoVeLHeaD unique in comparison to other localgroups?SH: One thing we think is unique is that we draw upon each individual mem-bers eclectic tastes in music. With that being said SHoVeLHeaD uses thesevariants in inspiration to create a sound in Metal that is unlike any other.

A5: How can you be reached?SH: You can check us out on our website www.shovelheadempire.com.There you can find links to our Facebook and Twitter.www.facebook.com/shovelheadband ; @SHoVeLHeaDBaND. We are alsoon ReverbNation www.reverbnation.com/shovelheadempire . You can alsocheck out our upcoming events on all these sites.

A5: Anything else you want to add or that I may have missed.

SH: A couple of exciting things for us this year, we recently had a show in Minot opening for the twonational bands, Butcher Babies & Devil You Know. It was an amazing experience and we were muchhonored to have that opportunity. Also we have had our song Judas featured on the DakotaDamNa-tion radio show earlier this year. It was quite exciting for us to know that our music was also oniHeartRadio, playing throughout the nation and around the world. Shout out to the Dredges (ourfans) be sure to come check us out at The Ho Sports Bar & Casino on May 10th!

  • LITTLE STURGIS OFTHE NORTH: THE CAVALIER MOTORCYCLERIDE-IN By Mike PetersonNancy Jenson is the director of the Cavalier Motorcycle Ride-In, an annual event which comes in June. I was able to talk toher a little bit about this incredible event, which dominatesnortheastern North Dakota with what else? motorcycles. It is afantastic event, and Ive been there as well to take part in thefestivities. There is something for everyone there of all agegroups.

A5: What can people expect from this year's Ride-In?NJ:People can expect that this years ride in will be as big orbigger as we have now expanded more into Friday. StartingFriday at noon riders will be able to register which is allFREE they will be able to sign up for the Fun Run on Satur-day morning ( to eliviate some congestion on that morning). Also the newest part is that we will be having a ScavengerHunt ride on Friday afternoon! When you register (FREE)you will get a map of the locations. At each location will be aclue which you will take back with you to be back in Cavalierby 6:30 for prizes. One of the biggest requests has been formore things to do on Friday because so many come in earlythat we thought this would be fun and a great way to show peo-ple more of the great area around Cavalier. Also a huge newaddition this year is that we are having two big headliner bandscoming from Minneapolis. We are having two huge streetdances both Friday and Saturday night downtown Cavalier.Friday night will be featuring Pork chop and Saturday nightwill be SNS Band featuring Mark Anthony Goodoien aCavalier native and lead singer of the Shuffle Cats. Thesebands are rock/blues bands and have played at Sturgis, Algonaand Moon Dance Jam to name a few. So we are pretty excitedabout having such well known musicians coming to entertain!**Also our fun run on Saturday morning starts at 10:00 amwith registration and a $10.00 donation. With that donationyou will get a bandana and the proceeds will be going toWounded Warriors Guide Service which the money will stayright here in ND and MN. This is a fun ride that you get to ridewith a large group ( last year we had over 500 riders on thebandana run) and we like to choose a charity that is in our area.We feel this one is great as it helps to provide fishing and hunt-ing trips for wounded warriors.

A5: It really does live up to it's namesake, "Little Sturgis ofthe North." How much has it grown in the last few years?NJ:It is fun for us to be able to bring what Sturgis is like uphere so people can really get the feel of what it is like to beamongst thousands of bikes. It is pretty amazing for a town of1200 people to have 3000 4000 motorcycles lined up downthe streets and going thru town something no other town any-where near us has. We have added some new motorcyclegames this year some I would think that many people wouldnot have seen. And of course more food vendors because eachyear we grow we need more vendors! Our event is unique inthat the bikes, people, food and entertainment are all right to-gether on Main street. Just like Sturgis that started small with

dirt track races and grew we too have grown from just a Thurs-day night ride in with 60 motorcycles to being one of thelargest motorcycle events in the state of North Dakota with ap-prox. 4000 motorcycles rolling into Cavalier. Last year we hadpeople attend from as far away as Missouri and Wyoming people that came just for our event! It is thanks to our greatpeople that attend that go back and tell their friends what agreat time that they had that they bring more each year backwith them. Just like Sturgis it is a place to come back to and seeold friends and make new ones along with seeing the mostbeautiful bikes in the country!! Our Canadian friends love tocome to Cavalier the enjoy some extra freedoms here in theUS and they love the games and fun. And we love to havethem!

A5: How does the city adapt to the influx of people and mo-torycles?NJ: The city of Cavalier and its people are just so great aboutthis event. I will say that 17 years ago motorcycles were not asprevalent as they are now and it was maybe not everyones fa-vorite idea to have this continue and grow like it has. But I canhonestly say that as the event as grown it has actually enlight-ened many people to how great bikers are and truly not tojudge a book by its cover. I have had so many people tellme that at first for many years they were not too enthusiasedabout it and wouldnt even come up town for it. But when theydid they found out how friendly all the people are and as weknow about bikers love to talk about their bikes!! Also thebusiness owners have come to know a couple things that thepeople that attend this event are great people who are always sopolite and friendly and that this has become the largest rev-enue generating event for the year in Cavalier so we appreciatewhat they people bring to us! I give the people of Cavaliercredit it is not easy to get around and it is a lot of traffic forthe weekend but most are great about it and just let us do ourthing. And we appreciate it!

What we also appreciate is our VOLUNTEERS!!! Not only allof the committee that meets through out the whole year whoare all VOLUNTEERS! but also the extra people that are vol-unteering for the days of working the registration tables and somuch more. Also our city workers that put in so much over-time and work so hard to get the city looking its best for theevent these are all the great people of Cavalier that make thishappen!!

A5: Anything else you might want me to add?NJ: I always like to say that is event is for everyone. You canbring the family to see it all and yet the truest hardcore bikerwill have a great time. thats what makes this the most unique (and we think best Smile) biker event in ND!! If they kidscome they can go to the Kid Game area with the bouncy housesprovided by the Assembly of God church the same peoplethat provide the Biker church service on Sunday morning. Also you can fill your bellies before the long ride home Sundaymorning with the pancake breakfast that the local Cavalier FireDept. puts on. So yes this is a true community event whereeveryone pitches in!

Another interesting thing is that now this time of year peoplereally start asking about the ride in and make reference tomeetings. I always have to smile and say that we actually takeabout a month or so off after the ride-in but then the meetingsstart up again. It takes meetings and doing planning/workingfor a full year to get this event to all happen.

By JaimieMieselQuestion: I hearthat keeping a foodjournal might helpme lose weight. Can you give mesome tips on how to get started and the best way to journal?

Answer: Several studies have shown that people who keepfood journals are more likely to be successful in losing weight. The simple act of food journaling is an excellent way to bringinstant awareness to what, how much, and why you are eat-ing. Journaling helps identify areas where changes mightneed to be made, whether its recognizing a food allergy orsensitivity, or realizing that many of your daily calories arecoming from mid-afternoon beverages and late-night snacks.Decide on what type of journal will work for you. You mightchoose a simple notebook and manually log or you could use asmart phone app (like Anytime Health) and track digitally.Next, start logging your food. It makes the most sense to logright after you eat, whenever possible. Be sure to include timeof meal, food amount/portion size, and degree of hunger. Beas honest and thorough as you can. Its easy to forget thehandful of M&Ms at the office or that alfredo sauce on yourlunchtime pasta. Review your journal weekly, either on yourown or with a registered dietitian to determine eating patternsthat are positive and those that need a change to help youmove towards a healthier lifestyle.

Question: Can you please explain what Tabata is? I know itsa form of intense exercise, but what exactly do you do?

Answer: Tabata training is a specific type of high intensity in-

terval training that is short in duration but extremely HIGHin intensity. Japanese scientist Dr. Izumi Tabata and his teamof researchers in Tokyo discovered Tabata Training. Tabatasresearch was done on two groups of athletes: one group train-ing at moderate intensity (5 days a week for 6 weeks for onehour at a time) and the other at a much higher intensity (4days a week for 6 weeks but for only 4 minutes at a time). Thehigh intensity group showed a substantially larger increase intheir aerobic system than group one, and increased theiranaerobic system by 28 percent. In other words they literallygot fitter faster! You can see how this is becoming a popularmethod of training. The Tabata protocol is only 4 minutes ofexercise but within those 4 minutes, you perform 20 secondsof extremely high intensity exercise followed by 10 seconds ofrecovery and repeat 8 times in a row. In order to get the re-sults Tabata saw in his study, you need to workout as hard asyou possibly can for each and every second of the intervals (toa place where you literally cannot say a word and do not feellike doing the work again). You can choose any exercise thatallows you to achieve the intensity described. Tabata workoutsare intense, but great if you are short on time, need to breakthrough a plateau, or you are just looking to change up yourexercise routine. You should always build in significant recov-ery after a Tabata workout (easier workouts the next day ortwo) and keep in mind that if you are doing Tabata trainingright, you will not want to go for very long!

  • JAKE LINDQUIST: DEFENDING THE ANIMALSBy Mike Peterson

Jake Lindquist is an individual assisting with the Circle of Friends expanded Foster Careprogram. His story is unique and certainly adds to the wonderful quilt of individuals that make our community special. Hes spent time with the Search and Rescue units In Denver, Colorado, headed the Boys and Girls Club and assisted people and animals in a variety of ways.

Jake grew up in Stillwater, MN. Graduated from Mankato State in 1997 and immediately worked for the Fargo Youth Commission as an Associate Director, until moving to Colorado Springs, CO to join the Boys and Girls Club of Pikes Region.

It was there he started volunteering with the SAR teams (Search and Rescue) and became a K9 handler, dogs that would use their extra ability of smell to find missing children and adults. In coming across animals as part of the SAR team, Jake said, I saw many dogs that would have been considered throw away dogs being rescued form the pound or rescue organization being use as SAR K9s. It was awesome to see these dogs that could have been destroyed enjoying life and being a huge role in the local Search and Rescue.

He also seen a fellow SAR volunteer rescue a bloodhound from the local pound the day he was supposed to be put down and immediately placed the animal in training and eventually become of the leaders of the K9 pack. His experience with K9s and animals being rescued has tought him how animals, dogs especially, can be incredibly devoted to their caretakers and also be a solid asset to the community.

Hoping to be closer to family, Jake moved to Grand Forks in 2009 and was drawn towards the solid community of dog rescuers the Red River Valley currently holds. Aside from fostering his own animals, Jake assists the Circle of Friends Humane Society by helping in various ways such as evaluating and handling dogs at events such as the recent Mens Show, where he connected a lab/border collie mix with a forever home.

The foster animals that Jake takes care of at the moment is a cat named Hudson, who is also neutered. One of the objectives Jake has with him is to further socialize him with dogs and people and the cat is currently available for adaption.

Jake has also talked about what one can expect when they are adapting a foster animal. One, its a great way to make a difference in a homeless animals life without the lifetime commitment. It also keeps them out of the general shelter. A foster family can work on behavior problems and house training, increasing the chances of that animal being adopted. One of the scenerios that results could be what he calls a foster fail, in which the overseeing family decides to adoptthe animal for good, which of course is fantastic as well.

It is all about pairing up the animal with the right people, sometimes that might take longer than other times to find just the right home. I myself have adapted a dog (a Jack Russell Terrior in 2009 from a animal foster home network in Fargo, titled 4 Luv of Dog Rescue. Contributing writer to After5, Dylan Gott also obtained his dog (an Alaska Malamute/Yellow Lab) from Circle ofFriends Humane Society.

We care about dogs here in Grand Forks, and all animals. And Jakes story along with his shared experiences helping others and especially dogs carries tremendous weight into making our community better, and making this community more of what it should be for everybody and every animal: home.

More information on fostering an animal or adapting one from the Circle of Humane Society website (www.gfpets.org):

The Circle of Friends Humane Society is expanding its foster care program to include pets sheltered at the facility for extended periods of time. For many years the shelter has utilized foster families to care for animals too young to be adopted or animals recovering from illness or injury.

Since many animals can be at the shelter for weeks to months, its important their quality of life bemaintained. Pets that fail to thrive in kennel environments can then be placed into temporary or foster homes willing to provide for the pets needs until the pets are adopted. The Foster Care Program requires commitment and responsibility from the foster care providers.

The Circle of Friends Humane Society is looking for individuals and families interested in providingfoster care to specific pets at the shelter. If you are interested in this program please contact our fostercoordinator, Leslie Hagert, [email protected].. Thank you!
