Team RYC Shows Strength at Newport Harbor Invitational

This is the third year that Newport Harbor Yacht Club hosted its prestigious invitational regatta as a team racing event. RYC was one of 10 fortunate teams

to receive an invitation as 16 teams requested race entry. Along with RYC, other teams to compete in the April 9-11 event staged at Newport Harbor in Balboa, California were New York, St. Francis, San Francisco, Newport Harbor, Boston, Southern, San Diego, Balboa, and Seattle. Dear Fellow Members,

May is here and is perhaps the best month of the year at RYC. Spring launching, the Derby Party, the Commodores’ Ball and, of course, Memorial Day. Please plan on attending to enjoy the best RYC has to offer.

An added bonus this year is a special dedication of the new race committee boat on Saturday, May 29 at 3 pm. Please join us on the deck for bloodys and tropical cocktails and snacks as we

name our new boat. This will indeed be a special honor but will remain a secret until then. You do not want to miss this fun event and the surprise honor will be special. A great way to keep the energy up for the entire Memorial Day weekend. On Monday, May 31, we have a full day of activities that include some of our most important traditions. The dress code for members is blue and white with RYC blazers the preferred jacket. We start the day off at 8 am with a very touching memorial service followed by a continental breakfast on the deck and pavillion. After breakfast it is a quick change to casual dress for racing/activities and to dress ship for the Commodore’s Fleet Review later at 3 pm. All yachts are expected to participate in the review. If you can not participate, please send me a note. Onceagain, RYC blue and white dress is expected for the

Fleet Review and cocktail party. We extend a special invitation to all of our newer members so you can share in these great traditions. We will even provide rides for the review or you and the family can watch all the pomp and circumstance right from the deck.

Our Fleet Captain, Racing, Eric Voss along with the individual Fleet Captains and Race Committee have completed

all the preparations for another great racing season. If you are interested in racing we have the perfect venues for all skill levels with week night and weekend racing and plenty of help for newcomers. We also have group sailing lessons that are free for members so just show up anytime the group lessons are scheduled. See the Log calendar and website for details or check with Liz Bower and Jon Faudree.

We still have a few small boat slips available so check with Pat Basset for the particulars. Pat and his team are also placing ten new picnic tables around the property for your use anytime.

Hopefully the water will continue to rise as we are one foot below the median depth and almost two feet below this time last year. We have no dredging planned or budgeted for 2010 so all we can do now is hope for the best.

Betsey and I are excited that First Light is floating again and hope you will stop by and say hello. We are in Slip 18 and usually have some kind of beverage near by.

See you on the Dock and at the Club soon!!

Hello from the RYC Pool! With Memorial Day just around the corner the pool is getting ready for the first swimmers of the season. This summer we hope to see some warm weather and sunshine. Our great thanks to those of you who participated in the pool surveys, it helped us gather important information regarding the programs we offer here at RYC.

With the return of the season we will also be looking for participants for the RYC Learn-to-Swim Program (see Pages 9 & 10). There are Learn-to-Swim forms available on our website. If you are new to the program please feel free to ask questions or come down to the pool one day during lessons to watch and see first hand what we do. Since the pool hours change with the season please check our schedule on-line. When visiting the pool please remember to sign in both yourself and your guests upon entering the pool area.

We look forward to seeing everyone poolside!

Commodore Ross called the meeting to order at 7:14 hours.

There was a moment of silence in memory of George Sutherland.

Treasurer John Miraglia reported that total income for the month exceeded the budget giving us a positive variance. The Food and Beverage margin came in very close to budget, and these margins should continue to increase as we move toward the summer months. Year to date total revenue is on target with budget.

Expenses for the month continued to be below budget providing another positive variance for the month. House Operations and Facilities provided most of the savings on the expense side. Also, Junior Sail provided additional income from instruction income.

Net income for the month was a break even and year to date our net income is running a favorable variance.

Club Manager Mary Smith reported on all the upcoming events with a very professional PowerPoint presentation.

Racing Fleet Captain Eric Voss reported that he has obtained the annual permit required for racing from the Coast Guard.

The PHRF Pursuit race is June 20, and 18 boats have registered.

The Race for a Case is July 18 with 19 boats registered.

There has been a good response with boat registration for GO and Fun courses on Friday night. The Wednesday night response is somewhat less than last year.

The Crew Pool is on a web page under Offshore Racing.

Tim Breen and Doc Sullivan have volunteered to represent the Club as PHRF delegates.

Team racing started April 5 with 20 participants. The focus is on education, rules, and introduction to team racing. Weekly Team Racing runs until Monday, May 17. Sunday, May 23 is the team racing regatta.

Rear Commodore Kankoski mentioned that Eric and team have breathed new life into the racing program and he thanked them for their efforts.

John Odenbach reported that there are about eight people interested in the IRC rating system. IRC ratings can be assigned without measuring. This year there will be combined scoring so skippers can compare their IRC results against PHRF results.

Treasurer John Miraglia reported that the Club holds parcels of land that lie in both Irondequoit and the City of Rochester. He is recommending that we hire a tax assessor to appraise the property and challenge the tax assessment

Liz Bower, reporting for the Junior Sail Instruction Program, commented that High School sailing is half way through and the program ends on May 14. Twenty-five kids signed up in advance for the summer program which is far ahead of advance reservations from previous years. Adult sail instruction started April 24.

There is a safe power boating class June 12 and 13. The Level 1 instructor class scheduled in May is full. There is a Memorial Day weekend open house on May 30 in RJYC building.

Bud Webb reported that there was a meeting of the Principal Race Officers

regarding issues for the racing season. Steve Wilde has been working on the Mark Set boat. Bob Locke has been a huge asset to get the boat ready.

Hank Stuart reported on the National Hospice Regatta scheduled for June 3-6. Nineteen teams have registered including a team from San Diego and Annapolis.

The Melges 24 North Americans are scheduled for Sept 20 – 26 to be hosted by RYC. There will be a Melges 24 raffled off in partnership with Lifetime Care.

Tim Sladden reported on the Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Baldwin Cup team race regatta. (See cover article.)

Bill Delaney, reporting on the Club Cruise, announced that they have the basic route scheduled and are finalizing plans at some of the locations. The next meeting is May 14 in the Burgee bar. Charlie Giunta, US Customs and Border Patrol, will speak on the procedures to legally enter Canada and return to the US.

Yacht & Harbor/ Dock Master Committee Chairman Pat Basset reported that boats are going in on schedule. The lake is lower than usual but is in coming up. It seems to be lower by two feet. There were several basin modifications made prior to the boating season. The Safety Ladders in the basin will be upgraded over the next two seasons.

RYC employee Louise Christensen died in a plane crash on Easter Sunday. She was a sailing instructor and server. Hank Stuart requested that the Board send a letter of condolence to the family.

RYC 2010 Keelboat ProgramThe Club has a total of 6 Ideal 18’s for this year. Miles and his crew put a lot of work

in to getting them ship shape during the offseason. Again this year, two will be docked in slips number 34 and 35 while four will be dry-sailed for racing.

Again this year, the dry-sailed boats will be offered first to the WRA on Thursday evenings, but are otherwise available to all participants of the program.

This season we are also scheduling team racing with guest sailors to help get us started in this new trend in Club racing.

For $325.00 per family you can take advantage of the Keelboat Program, with no worries of ownership. Don’t be left sitting at the bar or pool wishing you

were out on the water when the breeze comes up.

If you’re interested, fill out the form below and return it with this month’s bill payment, or fax it to 342-8116, Attention Keelboat Program. Or drop it off at the Club.

A Message from the Club Manager

Dear Members,

Preparing for spring has been busier than usual this year and the month of April seems to have flown by. We started the month with a very successful and well attended Easter Holiday Weekend. On Saturday many families with young children joined us for an exciting breakfast with the ever patient Easter Bunny. The weather was unseasonably warm this year, with the temperature reaching into the 80’s. It was especially nice for the children to be outside and enjoy the egg hunt. The RYC Women’s Association hid more than 1,000 eggs for eager hunters to place in their personally decorated Easter buckets. Many families remained at the Club after breakfast to fully enjoy the sunshine and warm southern breeze. On Easter Sunday we celebrated with even more Yacht Club families as Chef George and his staff prepared an absolutely outstanding Easter feast that included custom ice carvings and creative food displays.

And, the RYC Entertainment Committee and the RYC staff brought spring colors back into play as they totally immersed themselves in costume and décor at our “Motown and More”

party on April 17. The Conewago room was transformed into a neon colored playground with a dance cage and all!! Go-go boots, tie dye and peace signs abounded and hair styles were quite authentic too. It was a fun-filled night which ended with great conversation at the downstairs bar… one last drink on the way out. All who attended enjoyed the change of pace.

Spring college career fairs is another way we kept us busy in April. After attending Niagara University and RIT’s career fairs we were able to fill all of our Hospitality-intern positions for this summer. We have a very talented group of students that I am sure will be an asset to our Club. It is always nice to have people with new energy and enthusiasm join the RYC team. You will have an opportunity to meet them at the board meeting in May.

In April, we also provided CPR training for the entire Clubhouse staff, and offered an additional session to certify members in both CPR and First Aid. You can feel comfortable that we have such a well-trained staff that knows how to perform CPR and use the Club- owned AED’s.

Training took place out on the water too this spring! Our first adult group sailing lesson took place at the Club on April 24 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. For more information on upcoming classes, visit our calendar on-line. This member benefit is new this year and is free to our members.

I am sure the month of May will pass as quickly as April since the Club will offer many activities for members to celebrate spring. On May 8, come to the Club and dance, dance, dance to the music of the Skycoasters, as we help Laura Markwick celebrate the completion of her Ph.D. The Markwick family cordially invites all members

to join them to party at the Club beginning at 7:00 pm. And, on May 9, Chef George will prepare another spectacular Mother’s Day Brunch, which will include his usual succulent breakfast and lunch items, along with much, much more!

Invitations for the Commodores’ Ball have been mailed. This wonderful dinner dance will be held on May 22 in honor of all Commodores, past and present. It is one of the nicest affairs the Club offers.

Memorial Day weekend commemorates the true start of the season! The Club purchased a new Mark Set boat this year, an Eastern 24. On May 29, the Christening of the New Vessel will be held at 3:00 pm on the front deck. All members are welcome to participate in this celebratory event.

On May 29, the pool will open for limited hours until mid June when school ends and summer vacation begins. For children interested in taking swimming or sailing lessons, we are now accepting registrations. Forms for the learn-to-swim and learn-to-sail programs may be found on-line, at the front desk.

On May 30, we will have an RYC Open House in the Sailing Center and Club House. If you know anyone who may be interested in membership, this will be the perfect opportunity for them to see what the club has to offer.

On May 31, our Traditional Memorial Day events will be held; Morning Colors Ceremony, the Commodore’s Fleet Review, and an outdoor buffet with live music! Event times are in the Log and on-line.

We hope you enjoy all the activities the Club has to offer!

See you at the Club,

Mary
