Although most of thestudents will be gone, itsoon will be one of thebusiest times of the year fora University of SouthDakota program assistant.
Cheryl Hovorka, at USDsince 1992, also serves asdirector for South DakotaGirls State, which will takeplace in Vermillion fromMay 28 through June 2.
The yearly event bringstogether hundreds of highschoolers from all across thestate to learn about howgovernment works throughvisiting speakers andactivities.
“I always say (getting theevent ready) is kind of ayear-round process,”Hovorka said. “Once GirlsState is over, I immediatelyjust renew all the roomreservations and lock in thedorms. Fortunately, we’reone of the first camps oncampus and all the otheractivities haven’t quitestarted yet, so we have anadvantage there.”
This year, 412 girls have
registered for the event.“The numbers are
slightly down, but in talkingfrom other directors fromother states, that’s a nationaltrend. The numbers seem tobe down all over. And, Ithink it’s just because kidsare so involved in so manythings,” Hovorka said.
Much of what Hovorkadoes in relation to the eventis to schedule the speakers –which will include Gov.Dennis Daugaard, Sen. JohnThune and Rep. KristiNoem – and reserve thevarious dormitories andother buildings used tohouse the participants andthe various activities.
She also provides thegirls information they willutilize throughout theirtime at the university.
“We sent outinformation packets onMonday, and that’s includeda whole bunch of stuff thatthey need to know for theweek – what time to be here, what they need to bring andthis sort of thing,” Hovorkasaid.
Along with the speeches, campaigning and elections, the girls also will take partin a community project.
“We’re asking the girls tobring an item or items todonate to the WOWproject, which is Women of
War. It’s a homeless shelterout of Belle Fourche,”Hovorka said. “It’sinexpensive things, like cakemixes or plastic bowls.”
This won’t be the firsttime the Girls-Staters havetaken part in such a project.
“Several years ago whenall the National Guard(members) were deployed,we had all the girls bringitems that we could send tothe troopers to give to thechildren over in Iraq,”Hovorka said. “That was ahuge success. We hadn’tdone one for the last coupleyears, and this just came tomy attention and I thoughtit would be a good thing forus to do.”
Hovorka’s official job isas a USD program assistant, which she described as“kind of like anadministrative assistant.”
“I’m actually on bothsides of the fence, becauseI’m classified as the campuscoordinator for Girls Statefor the university, and it’skind of housed in thepolitical sciencedepartment,” she said. “Butthen I’m actually the state
director appointed by theAmerican Legion Auxiliary. So, I’ve kind of got a dualrole.”
Hovorka said that “justmeeting the girls” is herfavorite role.
“I’ll go someplace andthe girls will come up to meand go, ‘I was at Girls’State,’” she said. “Well, obviously when there are
400-plus girls you don’tremember them all. But Ithink that’s the fun partabout it. A lot of them willkeep in touch.”
South Dakota Girls Stateis under the sponsorship ofSouth Dakota Departmentof the American LegionAuxiliary.
As school year ends, busytimes await Hovorka
