BE PAWS-itive, APRIL HPS has initiated a positive reinforcement initiative. Blue PAWs are handed out to those that stand out as having performed a good deed. For example, if a student has helped a staff member, another student, or are just showing positive behaviour above and beyond the norm they are given a PAW to submit to the office. At the end of the month a draw is made from all the PAWS for a reward.

GRADE 9 HOME EC CLASS

GRADE 8 OPTION CLASS

The grade 9 students designed and preparee their unique creative fruit pizzas - these proud chefs turned out great products!

The grade 8 option class are "Ornithologist" sleuths.... they investigated what an owl ate by determining the contents of an owl pellet & are studying the importance of predatory birds such as the Barn Owl in the ecosystem.

A Big Thank You! Thank you to all parents who contributed cupcakes and cakes for our Easter Cake Walk in March. The elementary students had a blast and enjoyed the many tasty treats that were provided! A big thank you also goes to the leadership students for helping out with this activity!

Congratulations D.A.R.E Graduates!

A big Wildcat congrats goes to the grade 5 and 6 class who successfully completed their 10 week D.A.R.E program with Constable Bond from the Provost RCMP detachment. The D.A.R.E. program emphasizes safe and responsible choice making while exploring topics such as peer pressure, bullying, stress, verbal and nonverbal communication, and alcohol and tobacco related facts. To complete the course successfully, students participated in classroom activities, completed their DARE book, and finished the program by writing a DARE report! Well done group!

Boston Pizza Receipts HPS is still collecting original receipts, for dine-in, take-out and delivery orders. The donated 5% of the submitted receipts will be used to subsidize school programs and costs. Thank you to those of you who continue to support this program! MINOR HOCKEY MEETING There will be a Special Meeting to be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 12 re a potential Association merge between Hughenden and Hardisty. At this meeting the Minor Hockey executives hope that the collective wisdom of many will help to make the best decision possible for optimization of opportunities for hockey for youth in our communities. There will be two simultaneous meetings – one at the Hughenden Arena and one at the Hardisty Arena both to start at 7 PM with a vote to be taken by respective Society members before the end of the evening. We hope that everyone who wishes a say in this decision will either attend, or bring forward their support or concerns to one of the Presidents listed at the bottom of this bulletin. If you have concerns, we hope that you also come with an alternate solution(s) to solve the problem of insufficient numbers to ice teams in our local arenas by our current Minor Hockey Associations. Further information will be on a bulletin that will come to all mail boxes in the area & will also be available on the Hughenden Minor Hockey Website at http://www.hughendenminorhockey.ca/ Questions or concerns, please call Jordan Pasztor at 780-888-4004 or Rick Sather at 780-888-7934

Honorable Guest at Hughenden Public School The honorable Kevin Sorenson paid a morning visit to Hughenden Public School. The member of parliament went around to the grade six, nine, and twelve classrooms and shared knowledge about his role in the government and his views on current events. His presentations were tailored to the curriculum of each grade. The grade six class says Mr. Sorenson gave them a better understanding about the government and enjoyed hearing some of the stories he had to share. The students gained an abundant amount of information about the politician and were privileged to have Mr. Sorenson graciously answer any questions. The school and students are very grateful for this wonderful opportunity and hope in the future he will pay another visit. By: Darby-Anne Swanson

HUMANITIES & SCIENCES FIELD TRIP It is very unfortunate that the May 19 field trip for high school students has had to be cancelled. Considerable thought and effort was invested to provide alternate learning opportunities for students to meet and reinforce the Alberta Curriculum Learning Outcomes that students are expected to demonstrate in many of their courses - English, Social Studies and the Sciences. Hands on learning opportunities, with an inquiry and critical thinking focus, were infused into the design for the day. Parent feedback in the past has requested these types of diverse opportunities for students. Even though we are not going, appreciation is extended to Bison Bus for giving us a highway bus at the cost of a school bus; Friends of HPS for the one thousand dollars towards cost of bussing and the Leduc Discovery 1 oil group for the $300 subsidy. (Susan Reynolds, field trip organizer)
