other person for any reason whatsoever let’s not forget that we are not perfect either, and how others see us as Christians de-pends on how we treat them.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE | A fond farewell to our longtime Deacon Ward Thompson and his wife Gwen who, as has been announced, will soon be mov-ing to Iowa (where it’s cold in the winter and full of mosquitoes in the summer). We will certainly miss them both! We will soon also say “farewell” to Fr. Tom Kiely, our Associate Pastor for the past 10 months, who has been named Administrator of Sacred Heart Parish in Ocean Beach (a lovely little place so don’t feel bad for him!). In effect, Fr. Tom will be the pastor of Sacred Heart but since he is a priest of the Diocese of Camden and not San Diego he can only be named “Administrator” as defined by Canon Law. We will soon finalize plans for our parishioners to be able to say “farewell” to them all. The ques-tion on many people’s mind is: “Will we be assigned another Associate Pastor?” The answer is: “We don’t know.” There aren’t many priests available to serve as Associate but the pas-tor has put the matter in the hands of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. If she’s not too busy with other more weighty matters we are con-fident she’ll take care of us.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! | A GREAT BIG HUG and THANK YOU to the parishioners of San Rafael whose generosity has helped the Agnus Dei Founda-tion in the efforts to raise funds for the Lamb of God Maternity Home in Escondido. Our Parish Lenten Charity Offering this year raised $19,000 which was sent to the Home. Three weeks ago San Rafael hosted a spaghetti dinner to raise additional funds for the home and then --- ready for this? --- Philip and Tiffany Rivers matched every dollar raised, bringing the grand total to approximately $260,000! God bless (San Diego) Chargers Quarterback Philip Rivers and his wife Tiffany and the parishioners of San Rafael for their incredibly generosity!

“POPE FRANCIS: A MAN OF HIS WORD” | So much of what comes to the movie theaters is pure junk. Recently, though, there have been quite a few movies that raise the heart and spirit of the viewer. Now, a special mov-ie is about to debut which everyone should

make an effort to see: Pope Francis: A Man Of His Word, from Award Winning Producer Wim Wenders, will debut in theaters May 18, 2018. “Hope is a Universal Message” is the theme, and Pope Francis is a man of hope! Look for it at the theaters and make every effort to see it because, as one reviewer says: “Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face in a way nev-er seen before.”

JUST A REMINDER | First Communion for 64 of our young parishioners is Saturday, May 12th. Please keep them in your prayers as they encounter our Lord in the Holy Eucharist for the very first time! Also, MOTHER’S DAY is Sunday, May 13th. Mother’s Day Cards and Memorial Envelopes (for our deceased mothers) to have your mother remembered in our Mother’s Day Masses are available in the vestibule of the church.

A few weeks ago, as part of my duties as the Vicar for Ecu-menical and Interreligious Affairs for the Diocese of San

Diego, I attended the Annual National Workshop on Christian Unity which was held this year in Silver Spring, Maryland. It was a very “awkward” meeting this year. First of all, to get to Silver Spring from Reagan National Airport you literally have to drive “over the hills and through the woods” where GPS fre-quently failed. Secondly, this NWCU had fewer attendees than years past and the program itself left much to be desired. The schedule had been turned upside down from what has proven useful in the past to confusing today, and ecumenism took a back seat to talks about social activism. Honestly, in 30+ years of attending the NWCU this was the weakest. Next year the meet-ing is scheduled for the middle of Lent so I will not be attending, despite the fact I currently chair two committees for our national Ecumenical Officers Association. There is simply too much hap-pening in the parish during Lent for me to be away for that and be able to take my annual Lenten retreat as well. However, all was not lost. One afternoon a group of us visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washing-ton, D.C. That was a somber visit, similar to visiting the U.S. Holocaust Museum. While visiting the history of slavery and Jim Crow laws in the country I could only think “How can one human being do such a thing to another?” I remember visiting my uncle, a Franciscan Priest, during the summer of 1966 while he was serving as chaplain to a Catholic Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. It was difficult for my 15 year old mind to grasp the segregation I witnessed, even segregated sections of one of the Catholic churches we visited. How can one human being do such a thing to another?” More to the point, how can a Christian do that to another? Today’s Scriptures should be like a splash of cold water in the face of such discrimination and bigotry as we often see displayed in our society today by almost every culture against another. Peter’s preaching in the Acts of the Apostles says “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” This reinforces what St. John says “… let us love one another, be-cause love is of God” that is inspired by Jesus’ own teaching who, in the gospel, tells us “Love one another.” What is it that poisons the minds and hearts of people to see others as rivals or enemies rather than as friends? Why is the color of a person’s skin or the accent with which a person speaks cause for dismissal of the other as of little consequence? Why do national/political differences keep us from seeing Christ in others and treating them as such? These types of things come straight from the twisted mind of the devil. Prejudice of varying degrees floats through the life of almost every person as a result of Origi-nal Sin and Christians must be particularly vigilant lest such prej-udice turn to bigotry and dismissal of others who are different. The next time we are tempted to belittle or dismiss an-

Am I A Parishioner of San Rafael Parish? | Well, that all depends. Are you registered with us so we know who you are? You might live in the area and attend Mass here regularly, but if you’re not registered and we don’t know who you are you’re not really a parishioner. If you wish to be a pa-rishioner please fill out one of the Parishioner Registration Forms found in the vestibule of the church and drop it in the box provided. It’s that easy!

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal If you have not yet made your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal there is still time to do so. ACA envelopes can be found in the vestibule of the church for those who do not have one or can’t re-member where they put it at home. Remember, how effective our Church can be in spreading the gospel

depends in large part on everyone’s participation to help fund our many ministries in the Diocese of San Diego and here in our own parish! Our parish assessment is $108,000 which we are confident to reach again this year.

You may also visit our parish website, www.sanrafaelparish.org,

and make your donation using the Annual Catholic Appeal link on our Home page.

The Gift of Generosity | We thank everyone who has supported San Rafael throughout the year with their time, talent and financial contributions and look forward to support from all of our members in the year ahead. If you need a convenient

MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY

8 | San Rafael Parish

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH | There’s a virus spreading across America. It shames the 1 in 5 people with mental health condi-tions into silence. In some cases, it even takes lives. What virus are we talking about? Stigma. But there’s good news. Stigma is 100% curable. Com-passion, empathy and understanding are the anti-

dote. Your voice can spread the cure. What is Stigma?

People experiencing mental health conditions often face rejec-tion, bullying and even discrimination. This can make their jour-ney to recovery longer and more difficult. Stigma is when some-one, or you yourself, views you in a negative way because you have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as shame that can be felt as a judgment from someone else or a feeling that is internal, something that confuses feeling bad with being bad. Navigating life with a mental health condition can be tough, and the isolation, blame and secrecy that is often encour-aged by stigma can create huge challenges to reaching out, get-ting needed support and living well. Learning how to cope with stigma and how to avoid and address stigma are important for all of us. One in 5 Americans is affected by mental health condi-tions. Stigma is toxic to their mental health because it creates an environment of shame, fear and silence that prevents many peo-ple from seeking help and treatment. The perception of mental illness won’t change unless we act to change it. CureStigma
