Where is Love? What is Love?

When we see a film or tv, when we hear people singing on the radio, the subject is often about love. Even in the church, we speak frequently about love. In fact, as Oliver sings in the musical based on Charles Dickens’ story, “Where is love?” And what is Love?

Our faith isn’t just a religion, something added to our jobs, our friends, or our hobbies. Our faith is a vision of how we should live in full joy and peace. It teaches us how to be a real person. St Irenaeus said that “The glory of God is a person fully alive.” And a person is only fully alive when full of love. Because such a person reflects best the God who IS LOVE.

What is love?

Guided by the Holy Spirit, St. John the Evangelist tells us about agape, the Greek term for Love.

Agape describes a love which reaches out to others without expecting anything in return. This is the love of God for His creation. His love is poured out in abundance on every single creature and it continues to flow out whether there is a response or not.

This is the love of the father and his Prodigal Son. It may shock you to know that the love of God for the Virgin Mary is agape. God is love; it is his very nature; he cannot not love.

What is the difference between Mary and the Prodigal Son? It’s the response. Mary listened to Jesus. “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it,” Jesus said referring to his mother. Mary said an unconditional ‘Yes’ to God at her annunciation. She opened her heart to the agape of God.

It is that love of agape which we, too, are capable. It is this love that enables us to love our enemies and want to be reconciled with them. To love them with agape is to want the very best for them, to want them to reform, to be changed, to be healed of hate and negativity.

Now, not all LOVES are alike. There is the physical love called eros (eros), for example, the love of young lovers, the love of Romeo and Juliet. The second is philia, (filia), which in a way is the highest form of love. It is the love of friendship, mutual and shared, and touches every aspect of a person’s being expressing itself in a total transparency through intimacy, affection and perhaps sexually. It covers marriage and all other genuinely intimate relationships. The third love is prautes (prauths), sometimes translated as ‘gentleness’ and ‘meekness’ (as in “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth”). It suggests someone who is undemanding and totally submissive to what God wants but also warm and caring.

Jesus tells us there is one LOVE reigning over all: God is Love. Jesus does not say, “Love Jesus or love God as I have loved you”. No, He says, “If you want to be my disciple, then you must love one another, as I have loved you.” If we really love our brothers and sisters, strangers and even enemies, we do not have to worry if we love God. But, if we do not love everyone unconditionally, then there is no other way I can claim to love Jesus. I need to love those that God loves (with agape). Agape Love is not a question of keeping rules and commandments. Agape Love is a way of life. It is an internal attitude which influences every single thing we do and say and think.

The love of a Christian needs to be unconditional. Sometimes people will love us back; sometimes they will not. Sometimes, even though we want to love people, they may reject us. If they do reject us, we need not necessarily think that we have done wrong. When people cannot return genuine love, it is they who might have a problem. Sad to say, not everyone is capable of loving. All the more reason why we need to reach out to them. People often learn to love by being loved, by knowing that they are being loved by God without condition.

¿Dónde Está El Amor? ¿Que Es El Amor?

Cuando vemos una película o televisión, cuando escuchamos a personas cantando en la radio, el tema a

¿Que es el amor?

Guiados por el Espíritu Santo, San Juan el Evangelista nos cuenta sobre el ágape, el término griego para el

Amor. Agape describe un amor que llega a los demás sin esperar nada a cambio. Este es el amor de Dios

por su creación. Su amor se derrama en abundancia sobre cada criatura y continúa fluyendo

independientemente de si hay una respuesta o no.

Este es el amor del padre y su hijo pródigo. Puede sorprenderle saber que el amor de Dios por la Virgen

María es agape. Dios es amor; es su propia naturaleza; él no puede no amar

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre María y el Hijo Pródigo? Es la respuesta. María escuchó a Jesús.

"Bienaventurados los que oyen la palabra de Dios y la guardan", dijo Jesús refiriéndose a su madre. María

dijo un "Sí" incondicional a Dios en su anuncio. Ella abrió su corazón al ágape de Dios.

Es ese amor de ágape del cual nosotros también somos capaces. Es este amor el que nos permite amar a

nuestros enemigos y querer reconciliarnos con ellos. Amarlos con agape es querer lo mejor para ellos,

querer que se reforme, se cambie, que se cure del odio y la negatividad.

Ahora, no todos los AMORES son iguales. Existe el amor físico llamado eros (eros), por ejemplo, el amor

de los jóvenes amantes, el amor de Romeo y Julieta. El segundo es philia, (filia), que en cierto modo es la

forma más elevada de amor. Es el amor de la amistad, mutuo y compartido, y toca cada aspecto de la

persona expresándose en una transparencia total a través de la intimidad, el afecto y quizás sexualmente.

Cubre el matrimonio y todas las demás relaciones genuinamente íntimas. El tercer amor es prautes

(prauths), traducido a veces como "gentleness" y "mansedumbre" (como en "Bendito son los mansos,

porque ellos heredarán la tierra"). Sugiere a alguien que es poco exigente y totalmente sumiso a lo que Dios

quiere, pero también calido y afectuoso.

Jesús nos dice que hay un AMOR que reina sobre todos: Dios es amor. Jesús no dice: "Ama a Jesús o ama

a Dios como yo te he amado". No, Él dice: "Si quieres ser mi discípulo, entonces deben amarse unos a

otros, como yo los he amado". Si realmente amamos a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, a los extraños e

incluso a los enemigos, no tenemos que preocuparnos si amamos a Dios. Pero, si no amamos a todos

incondicionalmente, entonces no hay otra manera en que pueda afirmarse que amo a Jesús. Necesito amar

a aquellos que Dios ama (con ágape).

Amor de Agape no es cuestión de guardar reglas y mandamientos. El amor Agape es una forma de vida.

Es una actitud interna que influye en cada cosa que hacemos, decimos y pensamos.

El amor de un cristiano debe ser incondicional. A veces las personas nos amarán de vuelta; a veces no lo

harán. A veces, aunque queremos amar a las personas, pueden rechazarnos. Si nos rechazan, no

necesariamente debemos pensar que hemos hecho mal. Cuando las personas no pueden devolver el amor

genuino, son ellos quienes pueden tener un problema. Es triste decirlo, no todos son capaces de amar.

Una razón más por la cual tenemos que acercarnos a ellos. Las personas a menudo aprenden a amar

siendo amadas, al saber que Dios las ama sin condiciones.

This anniversary offers us an opportunity to thank God with you for He is always in the midst of the ordinary things that we do each day; in the midst of the daily experiences we have with the sick; in the knock at the door; in the ladies cooking in the kitchen; in the person in need of a listening ear. God is in the midst of the interruptions of life. And He certainly reveals Himself to us with every word of gratitude that you offer us. todo sacerdote desea realizar: las obras que han tocado las vidas de los Fieles y que a su

Este aniversario nos ofrece la oportunidad de agradecerle a Dios porque El siempre esta

en medio de las cosas ordinarias que hacemos todos los días; en medio de las

experiencias diarias que tenemos con los enfermos; en el golpe en la puerta; en las

damas cocinando en la cocina; en la persona que necesita un oído que escucha. Dios

esta en medio de las interrupciones de la vida. Y ciertamente El se nos revela con cada

palabra de gratitud que nos ofreces.

Por favor únanse a mi y a los sacerdotes aquí mientras ofrecemos a Nuestro Padre

Celestial nuestro agradecimiento y nuestro ser.
