The amount of time given, mostly unseen by the parish at large, is enormous. Some people practically lived here these days! It is so assuring as a pastor to know that details are being taken care of, and that needs are anticipated. And yet I also enjoyed getting my hands involved in the preparations as well. What touched you during this holy time? The Scriptures, the music, the church environment, the faith witness of others, the devotions, prayers, or maybe a quiet inspiration? God can use anything and everything to touch us and renew our Easter faith, if we are open to it. I would like to congratulate Keaton, Josh, David, Kellie, and Tobias who were baptized and/or completed their initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Their expectant faith certainly inspires me in a time when many have walked away from the Church or become inactive in their faith. They, and we, are called to give joyful witness to God’s goodness and power. We have a welcoming reception with coffee and donuts after the 9:30 mass this weekend. Also, I ask you to pray for our 30 newly confirmed young men and women. Their names can be found on page 9. Remember that the Easter season is a traditional time to have your house blessed, if it has never been blessed. Just contact one of the priests at the parish office to arrange a time. It only takes a few minutes. All you need to supply is some water (which will be blessed as part of the visit), and a branch clipping, or brush to use in sprinkling the water around the home. THANK YOU RECEIVED I received a thank you note from SMCC students who benefitted from all who offered a monetary gift to support their Christian service trips to Kentucky and Guatemala. They made their appeal at the masses in late February. They said: “Dear Father David Burgard and St. Mary parishioners: Thank you so much for your generous donation! Our group wouldn’t have been able to go on this trip without your help. By your generosity, we were able to help the poor and spread Christ’s mission. Thanks so much!” The note was signed by 22 students, Mr. Tim Maag and Mr. John Hilken. CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL This weekend, most of the parishes of the archdiocese are kicking off the 2019 CSA. We at St. Mary kicked ours off during Lent, so we are ahead. As of this writing, we have heard from 200 households who have pledged/contributed a total of $47,682.00, which is 60% of our target. Remember that all funds received past our target are returned to the parish free and clear, and CSA overage does not cause the CSA target to go up next year. All overage again this year will go to our church organ maintenance fund. Thanks to all who have responded. It would be great to surpass our target before the summer season begins in June! FIRST COMMUNIONS Next weekend at the 4:30 and 11:30 masses, we will celebrate First Communions. Please offer your prayerful support to these children and their families. Note that these two masses will be slightly longer and more crowded, but it is a joy to be a part of these sacred moments that we pray in time will build the faith and life of the Church which we all love and care for.

Vision Statement: To Welcome. To Inspire. To Transform. To Serve.

St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic community of faith, proclaims Jesus Christ through prayer, worship, celebration of the sacraments, ongoing care for those in need, lifelong faith formation and stewardship of our time, talents and treasures.

A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID

I would like to publicly thank our parish clergy, staff and parishioners who did so much to assure that we would have a dignified and beautiful celebration of Holy Week and Easter. The amount of time given, mostly unseen by the parish at large, is enormous. Some people practically lived here these days! It is so assuring as a pastor to know that details are being taken care of, and that needs are anticipated. And yet I also enjoyed getting my hands involved in the preparations as well. “Happy Easter,” I greeted the fourth-grader. “Happy Easter to you, Deacon Mike,” he replied, and then added, “You know, I don’t get it, but I believe it.” I stood there stunned, not certain how to answer the child, though clearly he wasn’t expecting an answer. The sheer simplicity and honesty of his comment stuck with me all week like a napkin on a honey jar. On the surface, the kid and I have little in common. I’ve lived the majority of my life, and I’ve grown much from the experiences I’ve encountered along the way. In comparison, the little guy has experienced very little, and his life is yet before him. On the other hand, the boy and I have much in common. Though I have two Masters degrees and a boatload of post-graduate studies, most in theology, frankly I don’t get Resurrection either, and yet I believe, not with my head, but in my heart, that Jesus rose from the dead. The classic definition of theology is faith seeking understanding, which was offered by two early Church fathers. The idea that faith in God comes before understanding God was echoed in that little boy’s words, “You know, I don’t get it, but I believe it.” I’ve always felt as though faith .. true faith, leads us to want to know more about God. Just having knowledge of God without a genuine faith seems to me to be an intellectual exercise, much like having an interest in history or science. But when God stirs in my heart a restlessness that causes me to recognize that there’s more to this world than I can see, it urges me towards some sort of response. History or science don’t call me to a response. History or science don’t lead me into a relationship. History or science are about facts, details.

Imagine if we all had faith like that little boy … simple and uncluttered .. not demanding proof .. just believing in the One who is way bigger than all the facts and details this sophisticated world lays on us.

Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

Senior Outreach Service Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan has established a phone reassurance program for seniors. This is a great service to provide people who live alone, are lonely and/or who need to have someone check in on them to make sure they are okay. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace AMEN.

Family and friends of Betty Janae Durocher gathered to celebrate God’s goodness in her earthly life and her new and eternal life in Christ. Her husband, Bob and Betty’s three daughters, Diane, Pam and Karen, recognizing God’s movement in Betty’s life, gave thanks for the many blessings bestowed on them through Betty. A woman who was “a kid at heart”, Betty could often be found crawling around on the !loor playing with her children, grandchildren and neighborhood children. She turned swimming pools into bubble baths, always making things fun for all. When she dressed as a clown, her children and grandchildren also dressed as clowns. She had a “servant’s heart”, spending hours meeting the needs of neighborhood children, feeding them and helping them with homework. As a 4-H leader for 30 years, a school room mother, library helper and lunchroom mom, her passion was helping others in any way she could. Family was always a priority. She had the gift of helping to put others at ease through her mannerisms and talk. To Betty’s husband and children as well as her beloved grandchildren; Adam, Tyler, Jenna, Steven, Claire and Xavier St. Mary parishioners offers its sympathy and the promise of our continued prayers for you as you grieve the death of Betty. May Betty’s hope and trust in Christ’s promise of the resurrection comfort and console you in the coming days and months. The Mass of Christian Burial for Dena Renee Snider was celebrated on Saturday, April 27, 2019. Her family and friends remember Dena as a woman who enjoyed being active and who always had the desire to be a mom. With her husband, Dr. Mark they were !illed with joy when they adopted their daughter, Amber. Dena was active in many aspects of Amber’s life, assisting with “Vacation Bible Schools” and sharing her love of crafts. Having a love of animals, she introduced Amber to horseback riding. Her dog “Pixie” was a joy for Dena. In more recent years when medical challenges altered her ability to be as active as she had been in past years, she forged close bonds with those whom she came to know due to medical treatment. Their support and care lightened the burden of illness for Dena. Dena is also survived by her mother, Barbara McDaniel and her sister, Shannon (Jon) Kellen. Her father, Norman (Wayne) McDaniel and an infant son, Andrew Snider predeceased Dena. To all those who grieve Dena’s death, St. Mary Parish offers its promise of continued prayer. May God console and comfort you with His promise and hope of the Resurrection. In this Sunday’s Gospel, the disciples in their struggle finally recognize Jesus and proclaim “It is the Lord!” Have you considered answering the call to “help the poor recognize the Lord in their life” by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Are you a widow? Would it be helpful to gather with other widows for conversation, support and camaraderie? Could you be a source of healing to another? If you have an interest in gathering with other widowed

women of the parish who have or are experiencing the pain and suffering, please join us on Thursday, May 9 2019 at 1pm in Heritage Hall.

Tom Bajkiewicz, author of “Dear Kay; One Man’s Journey through Grief”, will speak with those gathered regarding experiences of grieving. MONROE CARES: STAND UP, STAND TOGETHER Christian Teen Leaders: Camp with Art

Monroe Cares Coalition is Standing Up and Standing Together to make art possible. Our 2019 “Teen Led” Christian Summer Art Camp is peer-driven and coordinated by our teen volunteers of Monroe Cares Coalition. The intention of the program is to enrich the lives impacted by poverty and homelessness in our community, promote community and volunteerism, and share valuable knowledge and resources pertaining to art education.

Monroe Cares has a main goal to Stand Up against mental health stigma and Stand Together in support of all individuals living with a mental health condition. Supporting those at risk and vulnerable in our community is imperative to maintaining an authentic voice and standing up for recovery. So where do we go to work? The old Saint Joseph School in the east end is now home to Oaks Victory Village a branch of Oaks of Righteousness Homeless/ Warming Shelter. There Pastor Heather Boone is keeping the spirit of Saint Joseph’s alive and well and aiding people back to spiritual wellness.

Monroe Cares Coalition founder, Kathleen Fox, a member of Saint Mary Parish, is looking for adult individuals that have taken the Protecting God’s Children program or are willing to do so, to oversee our teens success in running the summer art camp. Also, as our teens grow older we are also always looking for new teen leaders for the camp sessions. If you feel called to this mission please contact Kathleen on or before May 16th, 2019. We are also in need of old crayons, newspaper, and glue!

CHRISTIAN SERVICE: Spotlight on Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is “a witness to Christian concern for the housing needs of people”. It is not poor housing for poor people. It has helped many obtain decent housing when they have limited means. It does not give away homes, but rather makes homes affordable by using volunteer labor, sweat equity and Christian charity. St. Mary Parish has organized work teams to help build Habitat for Humanity homes in Monroe County for several years. In the past, we have helped others. But did you know that based upon family income, it is possible that parishioners here at St. Mary may qualify for a Habitat home?

Along with having a stable income, potential homeowners must participate in workshops that include home mainte-nance, personal finance, and budgeting. Also required are 200 hours of volunteer work. Income limits are based upon family size.

If you are interested in learning more or to find out what it takes to qualify, please see the Habitat website for additional information: http://www.habitatmonroemi.org/homeownership/program-qualifications. Watch the bulletin for an announcement concerning a Habitat build date for St. Mary volunteers this year.

STEWARDSHIP Discipleship connects today’s Scripture passages. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter and his followers bravely witness Christ to the Sanhedrin. Privileged and honored to suffer for Jesus’ name, they profess: We must obey God rather than men. They are not afraid of the price of discipleship, regardless of the cost. In the Book of Revelation, the angels praise the worthiness of the Lamb with honor and glory. St. John, in his Gospel, retells Jesus’ post-Resurrection questioning of Peter. Christ asks Peter three times if he loves Him — some believe for each time Peter denied Jesus before His Passion and death. Peter responds with “yes” each time. Our invitation to discipleship begins at Baptism. We deepen our discipleship when we accept Christ’s call to a personal relationship with Him, which begins the conversion process of mind to heart — making stewardship a way of life. The power of the Holy Spirit strengthens us to proclaim Christ and follow Him. Visit thewildgooseisloose.com for resources to develop a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Don’t just hear the Gospel, live it! St. Mary, Monroe is sponsoring an opportunity to “Shelter

the Homeless”. We are organizing a Habitat for Humanity

building crew for June 1, 2019, 8 am – 3 pm.

Please contact Fred Fedorowicz for more information at:

(734) 243-4344 or [email protected]. Lunch, hardhats, and safety glasses provided; no experience

A Healing Prayer Day, sponsored by the Monroe Vicariate Evangelization and Catechesis Committee will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 1pm to 3pm at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2420 N. Dixie Hwy., Monroe. What is Healing Prayer? It is asking God to heal us emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically, especially any hurts or painful memories

that have interfered or prevented us from knowing and loving God. Members of the prayer team stand with you in prayer and in His desire to heal you. All are welcome, and no appointment is necessary.

MPB Monroe-- A Disciples Breakfast? In the Gospel of John, we read of the Apostles after Christ’s Resurrection, in their confusion, deciding to “just go fishing”. They reverted to their old ways. They fished all night and caught nothing. But Christ met

them early in the morning and helped them fill their nets and had breakfast ready for them on the beach. In one action he dismissed their confusion, fulfilled them as men, and fed them! Announcing a new Men’s Ministry in Monroe! Men’s Prayer Breakfast Monroe (MPB Monroe). This program has been patterned after a very successful program at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, MI. We meet on the first and third Thursday mornings of each month at the Knights of Columbus right here in Monroe. We gather with a light breakfast at 5:45am, begin the meeting promptly at 6:00am, and we end just as promptly at 7:00am. This is an entirely lay-driven ministry of Catholic men with the goal of inviting men to take responsibility for learning, living, strengthening and sharing our faith, which in turn makes us better men, leaders, husbands, fathers and followers of Christ. Don’t be intimidated. We’re just a group of ‘regular Joe’s’ who want to help each other get to heaven. Come see what we are all about! Questions? Call Elliot 517-204-3501 or Deacon Mike 313-378-0642

Sunday, May 05, 2019 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

The goal doesn’t change Common wisdom says everything we need to know about life, we heard in kindergarten. Basic principles like being kind to everyone, sharing what we have, including with the new kid, saying please and thank you—these don’t lose their value as we and the kids around us get older. In a similar way, the demands of discipleship don’t change the longer we travel the road with Jesus. The first thing Jesus says to newcomers is “follow me.” One of the last con-versa!ons the Risen Lord has with Peter includes the words “follow me.” To get where Jesus is going, keep following. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Revela!on 5:11-14; John 21:1-19 (48). “And when Jesus had said this, he said to Peter, ‘Follow me.’ ” Monday, May 06, 2019 EASTER WEEKDAY

Here’s your cue The great thing about the gospel stories is that they show the alltoo-human way in which folks scurry a%er Jesus in the wake of a really big miracle like his mul!plying of the loaves and fishes or walking on water. In doing so they hold a mirror up to us. Sure, we care about his message, but most of us also like having a friend in high places to answer our calls! Here’s the thing, though: Jesus isn’t looking for a fan club or stardom; he wants us to pay a*en!on to his gospel and respond to his call. He wants us to get to work, not wait for a show. Are we ready to take the stage ourselves and play a role? TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 6:8-15; John 6:22-29 (273). “When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they . . .came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.” Tuesday, May 07, 2019 EASTER WEEKDAY

Do you see clearly? Early in the 20th century quantum physicists discovered a mysterious phenomenon they called the “disturbing observer.” They had learned that merely observing a quantum par!cle changes it in unpredictable ways. As a result, scien!sts have had to develop elaborate methods for their experiments to compensate for the changes their observa!ons cause. What is true at the quantum level of reality holds true at the visible level as well, only the effects are much more subtle. In other words, your a/tude toward a person or event has an unpredictable effect on what you perceive. Today, be aware that what you observe is partly of your own making. Are you judging or loving? TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 7:51-8:1a; John 6:30-35 (274). “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you?” Wednesday, May 08, 2019 MEMORIAL OF TERESA DEMJANOVICH

Quiet faith, big impact Living a brief, obscure life has never been a barrier to sainthood. Such was the des!ny of today’s memorial saint: Blessed Teresa Demjanovich, born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1901. She earned a college degree (unusual for women then) and soon a%er became a nun. Two years later, at age 27, she died of complica!ons following a surgery. Today scholars recognize that she latched onto the idea of the universal call to holiness decades before the church emphasized the concept in Va!can II. Do you prefer holiness that is spectacular? If so, challenge yourself to also seek faithfulness in the hidden corners, as did Blessed Teresa. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 8:1b-8; John 6:35-40 (275). “For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life.”

Thursday, May 09, 2019 EASTER WEEKDAY

Ask and you shall receive O%en in life you can use a mentor: someone wiser and more experienced to show you the ropes. A couple married longer than you knows a li*le something about ge/ng past the rough spots. A re!red colleague can share a few tricks about problem-solving at the office. In a story from the Acts of the Apostles, an Ethiopian eunuch was clearly on a faith journey: not a Jew, yet traveling to Jerusalem to worship and read Hebrew prophecy. He’d done all the prep work for faith: walking the walk, doing his homework. Now all he needed was a guide. Cue Philip. As the saying goes: “The teacher appears when the student is ready.” Need a mentor? Prepare to receive one! TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 8:26-40; John 6:44-51 (276). “He replied, ‘How can I, unless someone instructs me?’ ” Friday, May 10, 2019 MEMORIAL OF DAMIEN DE VEUSTER, PRIEST

Take it to the limit How far would you go for God? Father Damien de Veuster went all the way from his na!ve Belgium to minister in Hawaii. He went all the way to the margins of society to care for the bodies and souls of lepers in a quaran!ned colony there. He went all the way to living in solidarity with them—tending their wounds and ea!ng with them from his hands—and contracted leprosy himself. When he died in 1889, news of his death went all the way around the world via telegraph and steamship. Be inspired by this saint to take the next steps in your service to the mission of Christ. TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59 (277). “Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life.” Saturday, May 11, 2019 EASTER WEEKDAY

When the rubber hits the road “The Chris!an ideal has not been tried and found wan!ng; it has been found difficult and le% untried,” wrote Bri!sh author G.K. Chesterton. The gospel teachings are indeed challenging; they go against the grain, especially in a culture that encourages us to focus on a different “trinity”—the self-absorbed trinity of Me, Myself, and I. Jesus challenged us to look beyond our own needs (which God is fully aware of in any case) and respond to the needs of those around us. Many walked the other way when they heard this message. But others stayed. Will you stay or will you go? TODAY'S READINGS: Acts 9:31-42; John 6:60-69 (278). “Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said, ‘This saying is hard; who can accept it?’ ” Invest just

The St. Michael Garden School: We learn a lot of exciting and new things in our garden school. We will become familiar with the garden and learn why the environment is important. The purpose of the garden is to have a hands-on experience that incorporates science, math, religion and healthy living. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS): CGS is taught in our atrium, a special classroom with hands on materials that are based on Scripture, Liturgy, and the Traditions of the Church. You will readily recognize Sacramental symbols, Bible stories and the Articles of the Mass. Each week the children are invited into this sacred space to be nurtured in their relationship with God by listening to presentations and peacefully working with the materials. As Catechists, our mission is to invite the child to fall in love with God and to enjoy God’s love by knowing Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
