Third Sunday of Easter May 5, 2019

Easter is More than a Day... Did you know that the Easter is more than a day? It is a season that lasts 50 days, 10 days longer than Lent. In our parishes and many around the world, this time of year gives us more opportunities to celebrate our faith than any other.

The Vigil of Easter began a series of cele-

brations of God's grace through the sacraments of Bap-tism, Confirmation and Holy Communion which were given to a good number of youth and adults in both our American and Hispanic communities. I hope you read some of their stories which were included in our bulle-tins before and after Easter. What a joy it was for me and Father Paul to be the instruments of God's mercy and love for these men and women. An upper respiratory infection took my voice away during that Saturday night so I had to rely on the help of Fr. Kevin and Fr. Paul to get us through Easter Sun-day morning. Thanks for your prayers; I'm better and back in full swing with much coming.

First Holy Communions bring us the

joy of seeing our children come to the table of the Bread of Life. I thank the parents of the children who will receive the Eucharist for the first time. As we tell them at their child's baptism, parents are the first teachers of their children in the ways of faith. "May they also be the best of teachers by what they say and do." Our catechists and teachers assist parents in their role with meetings and retreats but nothing substitutes for a family that comes to Mass week after week. What I was once told was true for me: "the family that prays together stays together!"

This Sunday's gospel captures beautifully how the ris-en Jesus continued to care for his chosen, his disciples, by feeding them fish and bread. In the early church the fish logo we see today was a simple profession of faith. The Greek word for fish, ichthus, had five letters that signified who Jesus was: Jesus Christ (I C), Son of God (TH U), Savior (S). Most importantly the risen Jesus breaks bread and the breaking of the bread of the Eucharist will be the lasting sign of his presence among us at Mass. Congratulations to all our first com-municants!

Confirmation is approaching. This year for the first time we will celebrate this sacrament in both of our churches on Saturday, June 1. Bishop Mark O'Connell will confirm one group at 1:30 PM at Saint John's and then a second group at the 4:00 PM Mass at Saint Thomas. Over the past several weeks Fr. Kevin and I have been interviewing the teens who will be confirmed. We make them aware that this is a choice that they are making. They need to take responsibility for their faith as they prepare to enter adulthood as Catholic disciples of Jesus. They face tremendous chal-lenges. Pray for them and for all our youth to grow in their relationship with Jesus and the church at a time when many of their peers are moving in a very differ-ent direction in life.

Ordination to the priesthood will take place on Saturday, May 18, at the newly renovated Cathe-dral of the Holy Cross. I extend the invitation to all of you to join us for this special moment in the life of our deacon, Timothy Hynes. Timothy has brought to us his keen mind and deep devotion to the Blessed Sacra-ment. These will be rich gifts for whatever parish in which he is assigned. We hope to have a bus to take us all there so please let us know if you would like to come with us. The cost round trip will be about $20, door to door. Fr. Timothy will be with us on May 25 and 26 to celebrate first Masses which bring with them a plenary indulgence. May God fill him with joy and the love that will make him a true shepherd with the heart of Jesus for people!

God bless! Fr. John

Third Sunday of Easter May 5, 2019

Padre John

Third Sunday of Easter May 5, 2019

Água do lado de Cristo, lavai-me. Paixão de Cristo, confortai-me.

Ó bom Jesus, ouvi-me. Dentro de vossas chagas, escondei-me. Não permitais que me separe de vós.

Do espírito maligno, defendei-me.

Third Sunday of Easter May 5, 2019

Dear parishioners and friends of St. John’s & St. Thomas,

OUTREACH UPDATE:

We are renovating a bathroom in the St. Teresa of Calcutta clothing center, located on the second floor above St. John’s Thrift Shop, for the pur-pose of being able to offer showers solely for those per-sons living on the street. I have met with Fr. John and the Board of Health Director to discuss project details and to follow state and local health recommendations. Providing showers is very much needed, as this is not available any-where else within the city of Peabody. Specifically, we are asking for donations of inexpensive flipflops for men and women, and small travel size containers of shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!

For men and women, continued needs - New white crew socks, gently used baseball caps, light weight jack-ets, jeans, gently used sneakers, laundry detergent, lip balm, shaving cream or gel, razors. All donations can be dropped off at St. John’s Parish Center, Monday to Fri-day, from 9:30-3:30pm OR in a bin marked “for outreach program” in the upper church foyer after weekend mass-es. For St. Thomas parishioners, donations may be left at the Spiritual Center during the week. If you need fur-ther information, please call Outreach Coordinator Pat Adam at (978) 335-2080.

Fr. Tom Ray Campership

This summer the St. Vincent de Paul Society is once again sending children in need to day camp at the Pea-body/Lynnfield YMCA. These camperships were insti-tuted in 1990 as a living memorial to Fr. Tom Ray. This summer camp experience expands the horizons of chil-dren and provides a needed respite for parents. It costs $350.00 to send a child to camp for two weeks. If you would like to help us provide this camp experience for children, send your donation to Fr. Tom Ray Camper-ship, c/o St. Vincent de Paul Society. You may place

your donation in the collection basket or mail it directly to the Parish Center. Checks should be made out to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Donations in any amount

will be deeply appreciated. Thank you for helping us may a difference in the lives of these children. As one of our

campers told us “it was the best summer I ever had”.

St John & St Thomas Youth Ministry Announces this Summer’s Mission Trip to

Mississippi

St. John & St. Thomas Youth Ministries are looking for rising 8th graders, high School students and adult chaperones to go on a Mission Trip to the Mississippi Gulf

Coast this summer. We will be traveling down to Pass Christian, Mississippi to serve the still-recovering Gulf Coast. We are leaving August 4th (Sun.) and will return on August 10th (Sat.) The cost will be $595 plus airfare, and we plan on fundraising to help defray the cost for each participant. This is a life changing experience that you will not want to miss. Last year alone the Boston Archdiocese sent over 600 volunteers, over a 5-week period, to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. How many people will represent Massachusetts this year? Will you join us? Contact Jessica Keefe at [email protected] if you are interested.

An Informational meeting will be held this coming Tuesday, May 7th at 6:30pm in the Parish Center. If you cannot attend, but would

like more information, please contact Jessica Keefe. The deadline to sign up will be May 26th.

Will you sponsor a child?

Every school year St. John School receives many re-quests for tuition assistance. This year there is a sub-stantial increase in the need for tuition financial assis-tance. Many families want their children to have the

Catholic education experience but the tuition expense is a financial burden and they struggle to keep

their children in our school year to year. If you or someone you know would like to be a contrib-

utor to a Catholic school education for one of our de-serving students, please contact the school office at

(978) 531-0444. Ext. 336. Any amount donated toward tuition assistance is greatly appreciated.

PARENTS: Come to our 10 AM Mass! These are our Family Masses for all

kinds of families.

Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.

All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on in the

sanctuary.

Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.

Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”

To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to them and to their parents.

Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? Or Completing Your Sacraments?

Are you interested in joining the Catholic Church? Do you have a family member or friend who is curious

about the Catholic Faith? Are you already Baptized, but haven’t

received First Holy Communion or Confirmation?

Throughout the year, we offer sessions in which we dis-cuss the basic practices and teachings of the Church. We also read scripture together and consider difficult issues of the Faith. At the Easter Vigil, participants may step forward to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, and/or

Eucharist and Confirmation, and are welcomed into the Church.

We hope you will consider joining us on your faith jour-ney. Even if you feel you are not ready, or have ques-

tions or reservations about the Catholic Church, we wel-come you. There is no pressure or “recruiting,” and we

promote open and honest discussion. To learn more about these sessions

(RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), please contact Fr. John MacInnis at 978-531-0002.
