Darrel Baldock Memorial Revealed

The Darrel Baldock Memorial at the Latrobe Recreation Ground was officially opened on Monday, 28 April by Mayor Michael Gaffney, Premier Will Hodgman and Brett Whiteley MHR who represented the Federal Government.

Positive Building Investment

Staff Changes

Latrobe Council recently farewelled Planning Officer Will Bamford who has been with Council for the past three

years and is returning back to New Zealand, with fiancé Chrissie, to take up a position as a Recreation Planner based in Rotorua.

Surf Life Saving Role Expands1

A different side to Surf Life Saving that a lot of people don’t know too much about, away from the standard patrols that clubs offer is that in Tasmania, Surf Life Saving are now able to provide 24/7 emergency response.

The new system is made up of six state duty officers that rotate through an on call rotation. Chris Jacobson and Mark Ackroyd are duty officers for the north of the state.

If Tasmania Police receive an emergency call that they consider could be assisted by surf club resources, they are able to contact a duty officer who has the knowledge and ability to recall a club and/or one of the volunteer marine rescue services.

On average, the team receives about two calls a month statewide varying from boats in distress, a missing person in rough seas through to shark sightings near swimming beaches and injured people that may need to be accessed by boats.

All Tasmanian Surf Life Saving Clubs now have operational teams that are made up of members that are IRB drivers and crews that can be called out on a recall list to mount searches and assist the police if required.

The operational teams are expanding to offer night operations with the availability of portable navigation lights and crew training on night operations provided by Surf Life Saving NSW. Night operation training will take place soon to coincide with the shorter daylight period.

Community Transport from Port Sorell

Port Sorell resident, Bryan Dore, is concerned with the lack of community transport services at Port Sorell and is attempting to gauge community support in relation to same.

Mr Dore would like to see the establishment of a ten (10) seater bus/van to serve aged and disabled residents in their travel from the Port Sorell area to Devonport, specifically clients who cannot get to a transport starting point.

"At present, there is no service of this kind available and with a larger percentage of elderly people in our area only increasing; a service of this type would be more than welcome.

I believe it is essential for the vehicle be adapted with a rear ramp for a mobile scooter or mobile wheel chair. Also, the passenger entrance would need to be adapted to take fold up wheel chairs and walking frames. Ideally, it would have a low lying step for boarding.

I would suggest that all drivers could be volunteers with the bus housed somewhere in the Port Sorell area, operating a couple of days a week.

Obviously, funding the community transport would need to be worked through however the first step is to gauge community support for such an initiative.

I am therefore hosting a public meeting in the Port Sorell Memorial Hall in Meredith Street, Port Sorell on Friday, 16th May commencing at 4.30 pm.

I would encourage you all to come along and show your support to get this initiative off the ground," said Mr Dore.

Annual Exhibition "Grafted"

As the leaves begin to turn and rich hues of autumn colour the land, Rubicon River Arts’ (RRA) attention turn to their annual exhibition. The theme for 2014 is ‘Grafted’ as RRA joins with Port Sorell Garden Club this year to create artistic

pieces inspired by their gardens. The art may be a delightful garden scene, a botanical study or a line drawing of a daisy. There is the possibility of garden sculpture created from found objects, constructed by artists with skills so inventive the observer needs little imagination to see what it represents.

Abstract art that echoes colour and form of magnificent trees and blossoms or a wheel barrow and spade – the possibilities are endless. Two dimensional photography, painting, drawing and print, along with three-dimensional fibre and sculpture in various mediums, a variety of creative talents come together each year throughout this exhibition.

The exhibition will be open at Ghost Rock Vineyard from Saturday 31st May until Thursday 31st July with the launch on Sunday 15th June at 2.00 pm by Mrs Glen Miles, President of the Port Sorell Garden Club.

New members are always welcome to delve into the world of art and share your skills with others and join in Rubicon River Arts activities. For more information, phone Angela on 6424 3463 or 0419 490 042.

The Moriarty stage involves a circuit along Valleyfield Road, Chapel Road, Oppenheims Road, Hermitage Road, Bonneys Lane and Moriarty Road which will the closed from 9.54 am until 2.24 pm.

The Merseylea stage means the closure of Native Plains Road, Lovetts Flat Road, Merseylea Road, Railton Road, Sunnyside Road and Stoodley Road from 10.21 am until 2.51 pm.

Rural Insight for Medical Students

Recently, 50 second year University of Tasmania medical students spent a week at various centres throughout the North West Coast, experiencing the diversity of medical needs and services throughout rural communities. Ten students stayed in the Latrobe area with each billeted by a local family.

At the end of the week, after visiting many health service providers and health related sites, the students presented their findings to an interested gathering at the Mersey Hospital.

Mayor Gaffney said “a number of the students had never actually been to Latrobe before and were very impressed by the health services available. Fewer of them even knew where Port Sorell was but all students felt that the area was very beautiful and they had a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

It was a concern that was highlighted in their presentation that the smoking and obesity statistics along the North West Coast are above the State and National average. These are health issues that we need to try and continue to address.”

Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe

'Tis the season to be talking about chocolate and not just because you are still recovering from your chocolate overload at Easter.

With the insatiable appetite of patrons for chocolate infused activities at Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe, registrations by activity providers close this Friday, May 9.

Did you notice the change of date?

Yes, Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe is being held this year on Sunday, 10 August.

This follows extensive consultation with activity providers following the 10th staging of Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe last year during which the change of date came about to get the festival further away from the pressures of the end of financial year

and away from the school holiday period while also completing rather than competing with two other existing festivals during Winter, specifically Devonport Jazz (end of July) and the Junction Arts Festival (end of August).

Since its inception, Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe has received extensive media and tourism coverage resulting in unprecedented exposure of Latrobe and, in recent times, has been included in Tourism Tasmania's marketing campaigns throughout New South Wales and Victoria along with the likes of MONA and Festival of Voices.

So, what are you doing on August 10?

Warrawee Forest Reserve

The Warrawee Forest Reserve in Latrobe was recently transferred from Forestry Tasmania management to the Department of Parks and Wildlife under the recent Tasmanian Forestry Agreement (TFA).

At this current point in time, Parks and Wildlife are continuing to assess the site and determine ownership of property within same, advising that the status quo will remain specifically no park entry fees will be charged.

The Latrobe Landcare Group continues to maintain the reserve grounds and open and shut the gate each day.

However, with the TFA currently in a state of flux and Parks and Wildlife intimating that there may be insufficient funding to maintain reserves for recreational spaces such as Warrawee Reserve, smaller park areas will probably be disadvantaged. No doubt any decrease in funding for the infrastructure needs of Warrawee Reserve will create angst and dissatisfaction from our community and the many users of the Reserve. One hopes the responsible Minister will be able to ensure sufficient funding for perpetuity.

Seat and Tree Dedication

Nineteen stainless steel and mod board seats have now been made locally for the seat dedication project (18 in Latrobe and one in Port Sorell) and two trees have been donated at the Latrobe Cemetery as part of the tree dedication program.

More information can be found on the Latrobe Council website if any individual, service organisation, business group or sporting body is interested.

Please feel free to contact Ron Viney or Mayor Mike to discuss the opportunity of being involved in this project.

Port Sorell Former Landfill Site

A number of residents and community groups recently participated in and provided valuable feedback to consultant Sharon Sykes with regard to the Port Sorell former landfill site off Alexander Street, Shearwater.

The forum proved to be popular and Ms Sykes was impressed with the variety of suggestions received from the participants and also the range of ideas from the returned survey forms.

Ms Sykes is very familiar with the Port Sorell area having coordinated strategic workshops and provided development plans for both Shearwater Park and Camp Banksia in previous years.

Once the draft report is received and discussed by Councillors it will be placed on Latrobe Council’s website for further consideration by the community.

The newly formed U3A Port Sorell held a Public Meeting and Launch in late March. The response from the community was overwhelming, proving the need for such a concept.

Approximately 230 people attended the meeting and within a week, 130 had signed up as members. The courses prepared for the launch were quickly oversubscribed and the Steering Committee has worked diligently in the following weeks to put together several more courses/activities.

The meeting also brainstormed the types of activities on people’s wish lists and several volunteers came forward with offers to become tutors/leaders.

The new organisation began its activities with a morning tea and briefing for members in April at which an additional 9 courses and activities were released. This brings to 19 the number of courses and activities commencing during May.

U3A Chair, Anne Lockett, said “this is a major achievement from a standing start only two months ago, but we are very conscious of the need to continue to expand our programs to meet the obvious need in the community”.

“We are asking people to understand that it may still take a little time for them to find a spot in a course that interests them, but also to note that we intend to give priority to those who have already made the commitment and become members” she said.

Term 3 begins Monday 28 July to Friday 19 September and further courses are being developed to commence then.

The new U3A Membership and Enrolment Office at 23 Burgess Way, Shearwater (the building in front of the gym) will be open each Monday and Wednesday between 10.00 am and 12 noon. This facility has been kindly made available to the group by the Adam Brooks Group.

Directional Signage

Directional signage throughout the Port Sorell was recently considered following the tabling of concerns at the Port Sorell Advisory Committee Meeting. In considering this matter, the plight of visitors locating the beach and boat ramps was discussed along with how appropriate signage could address this situation.

An overall audit of signage throughout the Port Sorell area was sought to better inform future signage discussion and decisions.

Council consequently endorsed this recommendation and will consider allocating funds for same in its current budget review process.

Shedders Creations for Sale

The Port Sorell Men's Shed are currently in the process of building a lathe room extension, repairing and rebuilding a donated glass house and producing timber boot pullers which will be offered for sale.

Stone Entry Project Underway

The latest community venture by the Lions Club of Latrobe Inc is a visually aesthetic improvement project at the Latrobe Cemetery entrance.

The club, with some Latrobe Council financial support, is in the process of

commissioning a stone fence at the main entrance to the cemetery to complement the style of the columbarium.

The club's Lions Youth of the Year competition has been concluded with Amelia Napier recognised for her outstanding participation and Hayley Crack awarded the overall winner and proceeded to the Regional Final.

The incoming President of the Lions Club of Latrobe Inc is Mr David Jarman with Kae Campbell continuing in the role of Secretary. Mr Jarman will take over this role from 1 July.

While not Christmas (but it is not far away), the club has a number of Lions Christmas cakes and puddings still available at Morses' Butchery, Latrobe at the current price. A price increase will apply from the next order so get in early to receive this discounted treat.

Don't forget that used spectacles may be recycled for use in third world countries and left at the Latrobe Medical Practice, Coventry’s Pharmacy or Ritchie’s Supermarket for collection.

Additionally, used stamps assist with raising funds for medical aids and may be left at Ritchie’s Supermarket, Morse’s Butchery or passed on to any Lions Member. Don't forget to leave them on the envelope or with at least 4mm around the stamp.

Should you wish to know more about the Lions Club of Latrobe please feel free to contact President Peter Burk at Morse’s Butchery, Lion Stuart Ritchie, Lion Kae Campbell 64261442 or any Lions Member.

Latrobe Skatepark Opened

On Saturday, 5 April, the skatepark at Latrobe was officially opened by Mayor Gaffney.

Held simultaneously with the skatepark opening was the "Know your Odds Skate, Scoot and BMX Competition", 23 competitors battled it out for prizes provided by Shearwater Sport and Toy and stickers from Red Herring.

Given that this was the skatepark's first official workout, the judges were pleasantly surprised by the talent that entered.

The Latrobe skatepark, located in Perkins Park alongside the Latrobe and Districts Youth Centre, has been well used since the site was open.

Disappointingly though, the area adjacent that was opened up to add to the passive enjoyment of the area by providing a water fountain, seating and barbecue facilities has had to be re-fenced due to vandalism. It is also disappointing with the amount of rubbish inappropriately disposed of around the site. With rubbish bins provided, it doesn't take long to "bin it" and keep the area appealing and not looking like a dump.

Council is aware that these actions are the acts of the minority but what a shame the majority are not more caring to encourage appropriate behaviour and ensure this space is welcoming to all.

Cross Country Takes to Bush

Students of Latrobe High School have been hard at training for their annual Cross Country challenge to be held on

Wednesday, 23 May.

Envied by many of their counterparts, the students will set off from Kings Park, over Dooleys Hill, through Bells Parade, around Pig Island and back to Kings Park along the Bert Campbell Memorial Walk and Sheean Walk.

The course is challenging however its completion is a credit to all.

When Art and Food Collide

Early in April, June Wilson's Studio Gallery at 129 Gilbert Street, Latrobe ran an exhibition of works undertaken by students of the studio over the past 12 months.

The opening was well attended by friends, family and art lovers from near and far.

For some of those exhibiting, it was the first time their work had been publicly displayed and their smile reflected their pride and delight at seeing others admire and appreciate their efforts.

The two week exhibition was an additional attraction for visits to the gallery and showcased a growing artistic community in the Latrobe and surrounding area.

The next workshop at June Wilson's Studio Gallery will be held on 4-5 June and tutored by renown pastellist, Judy Drew from Melbourne. The workshop will focus on figure and fabrics. Enquiries are welcome to 6426 2987.

Expanding the relaxed feel at June Wilson's Studio Gallery, the venue has recently diverged into food and refreshments as "The Crowded Lounge" - a great place to connect with friends or browse June's lovely pastel art. Word has it that the resident barista can answer any question on any topic - now that's a statement to live up to!

Street Rods Converge on Latrobe

Latrobe residents awoke to the sight of shining chrome and the sound of in-line eights on April 17 when the town hosted a formal breakfast for 180 hot rods on their way to Hobart for a national gathering.

The annual Street Rod Nationals were held in Hobart over the Easter break - the first time the national gathering has been held in Tasmania for seven years. Mainland participants were welcomed to Tasmania at a breakfast at the Latrobe Recreation Ground, fresh off the Spirit of Tasmania.

They were met by a presentation of some of the attractions of Latrobe, including Anvers chocolates, selections of local produce, and a hearty breakfast provided by the Latrobe Football Club.

The impact of this first impression of Tasmania was clear. As the last of the visitors departed, not so much as a single chocolate remained, nor any of the 370 local eggs that had been barbequed by local volunteers as part of the egg and bacon breakfast.

The Latrobe breakfast was an opportunity to showcase the Latrobe Municipality to the mainland street rod participants, many of whom toured the state after the formalities concluded in Hobart.

The street rodders were provided with a Latrobe Municipality Welcome Bag, which included information on local attractions, accommodation and services - plus a free

gift provided by Anvers and Colin Churchill of Art by Col in Latrobe.

The purpose of the Welcome Bag was to encourage as many participants as possible to return to the Latrobe area before they ended their Tasmanian holiday.

The success was clear, as `32 Fords, Chevies, Roadsters and dumped utes could be seen in Port Sorell and Latrobe streets over the closing days of April.

Road Safety Everyone's Responsibility

At the recent Community Road Safety Partnership Kentish Latrobe Committee meeting, bus operators raised that they were experiencing a number of motorists passing buses on double white lines and not obeying the 40km/hour flashing lights.

In order to address this issue, bus drivers have been advised to report the registration details of persons performing these unsafe driving practices with Tasmania Police undertaking to follow such incidents up with offenders.

Not passing on double white lines and reducing your speed to 40km/hour when the lights at the rear of buses are flashing is essential not only for your safety but those around you.

It takes only a second to ruin a life through reckless driving and a lifetime to regret it.

"Sherwood Hall" Transferred to Council

After 18 years of tireless restoration and management, the Sherwood Hall Restoration and Museum Committee have decided to call it a day, passing on all funds, records, inventories and ongoing management of "Sherwood Hall" at Bells Parade to Latrobe Council and disbanding the committee.

This decision was not an easy one for this committee however, with all the committee aged over 80 years and given that the restoration of the hall and the establishment of the museum are complete, the committee felt it an appropriate time to ‘hand over’ management and control of "Sherwood Hall" to the Latrobe Council to ensure a more sustainable management arrangement for the future of this facility.

In accepting this transfer, Council paid tribute to the fantastic effort of all committee members, past and present, for their investment in ensuring that a valuable piece of Latrobe's history and Australian architecture is available for younger generations to appreciate.

"Sherwood Hall" is open for public inspection from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Group bookings are recommended to make arrangements with the caretakers, Shane and Elizabeth Free, by phoning 6426 2888.

Latrobe Youth Centre Offers Naming Rights

At Council's March meeting, the Latrobe and Districts Youth Centre Committee confirmed with Council that they supported the Latrobe Basketball Club's application to offer naming rights to the facility in order to attract investment of the club.

Council has agreed that the Latrobe Basketball Association may erect a small sponsors sign on the Cotton Street entrance to the stadium and corporate coreflute signage inside the stadium provided that same be removed at the club's cost should the sponsorship cease.

Adult Day Centres

Within the Latrobe Municipality we are fortunately to now have the availability of two Adult Day Centres.

Adult Day Centres provide frail, aged and persons aged 18+ with a disability the opportunity to get out of the house and involved in a range of diverse activities. These activities provide mental and physical stimulation in a social and friendly environment.

Additionally, the Centres provide for some relief for the person's regular carer.

Within Latrobe, Adult Day Centres are located in Hamilton Street (run by the Tasmanian Health Organisation - North West) and now also at Strathdevon in Moriarty Road.

While able to access the service independently, both services offer a door-to-door pick up and return for those requiring same.

A daily fee is charged which contributes towards activities, meals, refreshments and transport costs.

Beyond the Bitumen

Larooma Park is the area of the Port Sorell foreshore north of the parking area at the end of Hawley Esplanade. It is an area that has been rehabilitated and planted with

native trees and shrubs by Rubicon Coast and Landcare (RCLC) members.

It is an attractive coastal park and is well worth a visit for a walk or a picnic. Many people go through the park on summer evenings, with red coverings over their torches, to see the fairy penguins come ashore to nest. It is also a place to see Pademelons and Southern Brown Bandicoots.

Each year RCLC members have an ongoing battle against Cape Ivy and Periwinkle that have escaped from gardens into Larooma Park. The group are winning with Cape Ivy but have not yet won with Periwinkle.

Better Bus Transport = Better Access

Public transport on the North-West Coast is a recognized barrier to full participation in community life. Many reports on the issue and its effect on job-seekers, workers and those who want to access post-secondary education and training have been prepared. The time for more reports is over.

Grant and Jan Bingley, the proprietors of Phoenix Coaches and Merseylink state "the problem of the connection between public transport and better participation is ours, as a community, to solve. If we don’t, we’ll never change our problem of long-term unemployment or people having the real choice of participating fully in economic and social life.

With your help, Phoenix Coaches, MerseyLink, Metro and the Cradle Coast Authority are going to ‘have a go’ at finding a solution through the Wheels for Work and Training on the North-West project.

Wheels for Work and Training on the North-West is about action and doing - designing, testing, and changing how our bus system works so it best responds to community needs.

It covers the area from Port Sorell through to Wynyard and includes movement between the cities of Devonport and Burnie and townships along the way. To maximize benefits for our community we need to get the linkages right.

The question the Wheels for Work and Training on the North-West project will answer is this: How can we better use bus transport to improve access for job-seekers, workers and people wanting post-secondary education and training?

We have the buses.

We have the people who would benefit from using them.

We have employers who need workers.

We have people who educate and train people.

So what’s the problem? What do we have to do differently to make bus travel more attractive to people?

I know you’ll have answers to some of these hard questions and, as we move through this project, we’ll be asking you to share your thoughts and ideas."

So who’s running the project?

Phoenix Coaches and MerseyLink are running this project. They have been successful in securing a grant from the Tasmanian Government through the ‘Wheels to Work and Training Program’ and are the project principals.

They have appointed John Pauley as project manager. Some might remember John from the Review he did on Tasmania’s Core Bus Services which resulted in real change to bus fleets, fares and the government’s approach to bus transport.

They have asked Metro and the Cradle Coast Authority to assist them in making sure this project is successful and will be seeking the widest possible input from the North West Coast community.

Our solutions will benefit from understanding the issues around use of bus transport with Bob Campbell and Lynda Jones coming in to run the community engagement processes. Bob and Lynda have worked with many groups and communities on the North-West coast.

Sassafras Memorabilia Sought

Do you have any memorabilia - information, photographs, articles, newspaper cuttings - associated with past and present families, events and activities of the Sassafras district from its settlement until the present time?

The Sassafras Community Hall Association Inc are very interested in hearing from you in order to develop an exhibition of the complete history of the Sassafras area and the many families that have lived and continue to live in the district.

Project Coordinator, Mrs Rosie Marshall said "there is a lot of history throughout the Sassafras area and whilst much is generational, there are those that no longer live in the district.

We are hoping to gather a comprehensive history of the community, past and present, and display it in the one central location the weekend of 23-24 August.

There is a special interest in displaying photographs of all the families in the area so if you or your family lived for some time or still live in the Sassafras area, we would be most appreciative if you could have a look through your photo albums and see whether you would allow us the opportunity to take a copy of them for display.

Newspaper clippings especially provide a wealth of information with many a family potentially keeping a copy of them in a treasured container. We would love this information as it shows how the community has developed and what has been significant throughout its history.

This project is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the rich history of the Sassafras community and share that knowledge with the wider community."

Information is sought by the end of June. Information is sought by the end of June. If you are able to help out with memorabilia, please contact Mrs Marshall on 6426 7334 or Ruth Rockliff on 6426 7206 or forward your information through email to [email protected]

Bushfire Preparedness

The Port Sorell Advisory Committee (PSAC) met recently and considered the issue of bushfire preparedness throughout the Port Sorell area.

In considering this matter, representatives were forwarded a copy of the pilot Community Bushfire Mitigation Plan for Bicheno, developed by the Tasmanian Fire Service.

The purpose of a Bushfire Management Plan is to provide guidance regarding bushfire fuel management, to increase community bushfire safety and provide protection to important community assets.

PSAC recommended to Council that it request the Tasmania Fire Service to prepare a Bushfire Management Plan for the Port Sorell area noting Squeaking Point as a high priority. Council has endorsed such a request and is following this matter up with the Tasmanian Fire Service.

Lillium Society Relocates to Latrobe

Outgrowing the East Devonport Recreation Centre has led to the North West Tasmanian Lillium Society moving their base to the Latrobe Memorial Hall.

Being a regional organisation, the group meet monthly at Penguin and discuss all aspects relating to lilliums, from growing lilliums from seed, hybridizing them, floral art, trade tables and exchanging lillium seed.

"While the flowering period for lilliums is from late October through to March, the peak season coincides with our two shows each year.

The first of these is held in early January and the second three weeks later, which will now be held at Latrobe.

We are aware that there is a flower and vegetable show held at the Latrobe Memorial Hall in early February and are already liaising with that group in relation to developing a supportive relationship with each other for the benefit of our respective groups," said Neil Jordan of the North West Tasmanian Lillium Society.

"Before my involvement 25 years ago, the society held shows at multiple venues across the coast but found that carting all their equipment from one to the other was extremely taxing on the members.

With the shows based in locations easily accessed by a majority of people, greater patronage and awareness of the society has resulted," added Mr Jordan.

Want to know more about growing and showing lilliums, come along to a show or contact the North West Tasmanian Lillium Society via Neil on 6435 1298.

“Step Out in Bricks” initiative

The Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation, the Housing Industry Association and the Department of Education joined forces to organise and sponsor the ‘Step Out in Bricks’ Program for Latrobe High School, over five days from 24 to 28 March.

The program involved nine Grade 9 and 10 students learning bricklaying skills and building planter boxes in the school Science courtyard. This has come about because of the establishment of a partnership with the “Farmer’s Marketing Network” to conduct commercial trials on one of their products on potato crops later in the year. This partnership will run for four years to enable normal crop rotation.

These trials require 1m square plots which will be developed in the planter boxes. Local Bricklayer, Rick Gaby, taught the students basic bricklaying and concreting skills, including how to set out a project. Once the students gained sufficient skills to start the project, Rick then oversaw the building of the boxes by the students.

The Australian Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation was the main sponsor, providing for the purchase of the bricks and all required material, and financing the cost of the bricklayer for the week. Latrobe High Pathway Planning Officer, Jenni Jago, was the principal Project Manager for the project.

Promotional Highway Signage

To address the issue of ad-hoc advertising signage being placed on Crown Land along the Bass Highway, Mayor Gaffney contacted the Department of Infrastructure Energy and Resources (DIER) early in the year with an idea. The end result being the erection of two large signs at either end of the town of Latrobe.

The ‘Welcome To’ signage includes the wording:

Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame

Teddy Sheean Memorial and Walk

Bells Parade and Sherwood Hall

Darrel Baldock Memorial

The ‘What’s Happening’ signage differs at each end of town as the eastern signage promotes Specialty Shops and Eateries, Sunday Markets, Platypus Tours and Great Nature Walks and the western signage publicises Latrobe's Free Parking, the Warrawee Forest Reserve, Antiques and Art Galleries and the town's heritage

Additionally, the “What’s Happening signs” are designed to allow corflute signage to slide securely into place. It is anticipated that this ‘advertising space’ will offer an option to community groups, service and sporting clubs, local businesses and individuals to promote their special occasion or event at minimal expense, with a view to providing information to residents and visitors and promoting tourism within the Municipality.

Details on cost, duration and responsibility of the advertising signage will be tabled at the May 12 Council meeting.

Rules of Shared Pathways

Council has recently received concerns seeking clarification on what are the "rules" are for shared pathways.

Council's Manager Engineering and Works, Jonathan Magor advises that "similar to normal road rules, it is expected that a cyclist should ride on the left of a shared pathway and give way to pedestrians. For clarification, "Give Way" means the person must slow down and, if necessary, stop to

avoid a collision.

Bicycle riders on footpaths and shared paths must also give way to persons travelling in or on wheeled recreational devices or toys including scooters, skateboards or rollerblades."

Latrobe Council have a periodic program of inspecting and clearing vegetation from pathways but are open to assess and rectify any specific locations where a concern is raised. Residents must ensure that vegetation on their property remains, at all times, within their property boundary and doesn't encroach and obstruct pathways.

Endeavouring to encourage the community to "get active" through the use of shared pathways, Council currently has a budget allocation listed for consideration in the 2014/15 financial year to commence a path widening program commencing in Shearwater Park.

What Can You Recycle?

Council is often asked what can be recycled. The following is a guide to help you through some of those grey areas that keep you wondering.

Can the piece of plastic in a paper box like cereal boxes, be recycled?

The answer is no, it should be placed in your garbage bin but put the paper box in the recycle bin.

Do lids need to be taken off bottles? Can the lids be recycled?

For this question, the type of bottle is presumed to be soft drink, milk and juice bottles.

Those types of bottles can be recycled however the lids, simply due to their size and potential to go through the wrong recycling process, should be removed and not recycled.

Do jars need to be washed? Do the lids need to be removed? Can the lids be recycled?

All containers (glass/plastic etc) that have residue in them should be washed.

The large steel/plastic lids are fine to be recycled as these are large enough to end up being appropriately processed but they do need to be separated from the container.

Community Retirees

Throughout the town of Latrobe of late, there have been a number of high profile people changing their lifestyles to enjoy the freedom of retirement.

Shortly before Easter, Mrs Rosemary Ryan was farewelled from the Mersey Community Hospital.

Mrs Ryan had been a long term member on the hospital's staff and saw many changes throughout her tenure. At the time of her retirement, Mrs Ryan held the role of Nurse Unit Manager in the Outpatient's Department.

Latrobe High School staff and students recently wished teacher Mr David Bridger a long and happy retirement.

Mr Bridger has taught at Latrobe High School since 1996 with staff taking the opportunity to pay tribute to him on his last day by mirroring his daily school attire and wearing science lab coats.

Gradually easing back on his workload, but not quite yet into full retirement is Dr Geoff Shannon of the Latrobe Family Medical Practice.

From June, Dr Shannon will only be available for limited clinical sessions to enable more time to be spent with family and travelling. Dr Shannon is referring his patients to colleague, Dr Bott.

Tourism Spotlight on Latrobe Municipality

A Century Of The Deep Elite

On 24 May 1914, the Royal Australian Navy took delivery of its first submarines in Sydney, the two British-built E-class vessels HMAS AE1 and HMAS AE2, as part of a substantial upgrade of Australia’s fledgling naval fleet.

In recognition of 100 Years of Australian's Submarine force, the military's silent service, the Perth Mint has cast an Australian legal tender coin and badge set, recognising the vital role submariners have played in the nation’s naval history since the outbreak of World War I.

As the pinnacle of naval technology, Australian submarines operate in international waters and under air space controlled by other countries, using the element of surprise, while avoiding detection or causing diplomatic incident. They are a key component of the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Defence Force at large.

Today, the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Service consists of six Collins-class submarines located at the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Force Element Group Headquarters in Rockingham, Western Australia.

One of these submarines is named in honour of former local resident, Edward "Teddy" Sheean, with that submarine - HMAS SHEEAN - being the adopted jointly by the town of Latrobe and City of Armidale in 2001.

To find out more about the coin and badge set, contact the Perth Mint toll free 1800 098 817 or go to www.perthmint.com.au.

Become StrokeSafe3

One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime but did you know that strokes can be prevented?

Stroke is not a heart attack. A stroke happens when the supply of blood to the brain is suddenly disrupted. Blood is carried to the brain by blood vessels called arteries.

Blood may stop moving through the artery because the artery is blocked by a clot or plaque, or because the artery breaks or burst. When blood stops flowing, the brain does not get the oxygen it needs, and so brain cells in the area die, and permanent damage can be done.

Some strokes are fatal while others cause permanent or temporary disability. It is important to understand that strokes can be prevented.

For more information on risk factors, prevention and signs of a stroke, go to http://strokefoundation.com.au.

Stage Hypnotist Performs at Latrobe

Later this year approximately 20 students and seven staff of Latrobe High School will be travelling to Cambodia with the Cambodian Kids Foundation to help with a project over

a 12 day period.

The humanitarian trip is costing approximately $3,500 each and although the Cambodian section is tax deductible there is still a large amount to pay.

Since last year, students have initiated a number of fundraising activities with the next being a public performance at the Latrobe Memorial Hall by Las

Vegas trained Comedy Hypnotist, Zeiken Black on Wednesday, 28 May.

With any hypnotist show, there is some apprehension about the possibility of being "volunteered" as a "participant" and the "what if" factor, although many would challenge their belief in hypnotism. Fortunately, this show is an all ages show, so nothing R-rated.

Testimonials for Zeiken Black's shows include comments that "it was as much fun for the participants as it is for the audience, many wish they had volunteered on the night" while another attendee now sees his partner in a different light after she was hypnotized to "attend to a pet elephant, playing an imaginary piano and lots of other hilarious things."

Others claim that they would have bet huge amounts of money that they would not have been able to be hypnotized but are believers after their friend, who doesn't know Japanese, was hypnotized to sing "Jimmy Barnes Working Class Man on stage in Japanese."

If you are looking for a great night out while helping an international humanitarian project, book today with Latrobe High School (6426 1061) to attend the Zeiken Black Comedy Hypnotist performance on 28 May at the Latrobe Memorial Hall.
