    By Bill Vint - PBA

    CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. –

    EJ Tackett of Huntington,

Ind., broke up a 7-9 split, con-

verting the break into a string

of three strikes that proved to

     be the difference in winning

    his second career PBA Tour

title in the PBA Xtra Frame

    Storm Open at Liberty Lanes.

    Tackett, the 2013 PBA

    Rookie of the Year, defeated

    top qualifier Ryan Ciminelli of

    Cheektowaga, N.Y., 217-210,

to win the $10,000 first prize

    after eliminating PBA

    Regional veteran Steven

Taylor of Deer Creek, Ill., in the semifinal match.

“They say winning your second title is the tough-

est,” said Tackett, who won his first PBA Tour title in

the 2015 PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open.

“But I’ve been close and I’ve been bowling well.

Maybe this will lead to something more.

“I really didn’t think I could bowl enough to beat

Ryan; I thought it would take 250 to win,” Tackett

said. “I got fortunate that he didn’t bowl a good game

because that’s really uncharacteristic of how he’s

     been bowling.”

Ciminelli’s closing string of four strikes forced

Tackett to mark in the 10th frame on the lane that was

    giving him difficulty.

“I liked the first shot,” he said, despite leaving a 4

pin. “I guess, being in the situation, I probably threw

it a little hard, but the result was good. I was a little

nervous on that (4 pin) spare, just because I’d missed

one in match play earlier – against Ryan, actually.”

Taylor’s “Cinderella” bid for his first PBA Tour

title, in only his second PBA Tour event after bowl-

ing in 103 regionals, came to

an end with a 205-200 loss to

    Tackett in the semifinal

    match. Tackett threw one

    double and converted six sin-

    gle-pin spares, but Taylor

    threw one too many splits.

    Taylor, an 11-year PBA

    Midwest Region competitor

    with three regional titles, ral-

    lied from an early 29-pin

deficit with a string of six

    strikes to eliminate Sean

    Rash of Montgomery, Ill.,

    237-209, in the first steplad-

    der match. The 40-year-old

    right-hander then watched

14-time PBA Tour titlist Patrick Allen of Mount

Kisco, N.Y., start with five strikes, rolling into an

early 33-pin lead, before throwing eight strikes in his

last nine attempts for a 246-212 victory. Allen left a

pocket 7-10 in the seventh frame and then saw his

titles hopes disappear when he left and failed to con-

vert the 3-7-9 split in the ninth frame.

The PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open is the second of

10 Xtra Frame events that will pay the PBA member

with the highest points total at the conclusion of the

series a $10,000 bonus. Tackett said his plan is to

bowl the entire Xtra Frame series.

“The series rewards good bowling, it rewards con-

sistency on different patterns,” Tackett said. “They’re

not just handing out titles and with a $10,000 bonus

at the end. It’s worth going after.”

The PBA Xtra Frame Tour resumes June 25-26 with

live coverage of the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports

Open from Lubbock, Texas. Fans can subscribe to

session high game of 298 bowled between games of 269, and 237 then

added a 211 to finish the 4-game Coors Light Doubles League with 1015

    at Holiday Bowl.

    Mutch hit 236-242-228-247-953.

    Tim Janz of Beaver Dam,

    Wisconsin, and his teammates did-

n't quite get out to the start they

were hoping for at the 2016

    United States Bowling Congress

    Open Championships, but things

    got progressively better and ended

on a high note as Janz rolled the

first perfect game of this year's

    event.

    The 36-year-old right-hander also

made a run at the top spot in

Regular Singles on April 15, before settling into fourth place

with a 770 series on games of 253,

    300 and 217. Robert J. Bures of

    Painesville, Ohio, leads with 815,

the only other honor score of the

    2016 tournament at the National

    Bowling Stadium in Reno,

     Nevada.

    Janz's perfect performance came

on the 42nd day of the tournament

and marked the latest date for the

first 300 since the 1985 tourna-

    ment in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when

none of more than 40,000 bowlers

were able to achieve the feat.

"I knew a few people had beenclose to 300, but I had no idea I

was the first," said Janz, who

    made his 18th USBC Open

    Championships appearance.

"Everybody was trying to keep me

calm and not get too fast or too

slow with my shots, even though a

couple did. I was disappointed in

the 10th frame with a couple of the

shots, but I was happy with the

final results. I've never felt that

kind of relief in my life like after

the last ball. It is still unbeliev-

    able."

Janz finished the 2016 event with

    a 1,962 all-events total, whichincluded 633 in doubles and 559

in team. Bures leads Regular All-

    Events with 2,122.

    Defending champions crack top

    10 at National Bowling Stadium

    The members of defending

    Regular Team champion Team

     NABR of West Henrietta, New

York, were recognized in an award

    ceremony at the National Bowling

Stadium, before taking the lanes to

put their title on the line at the

    2016 USBC Open

    Championships.

Though the number they needed toshoot to regain the top spot in the

standings was more than 120 less

than their winning score last year

in El Paso, Texas, there was a new

kind of pressure in trying to

become the first team in 113 years

    of Open Championships history to

    successfully defend a Regular

    Team title.

The team was able to grind its way

to games of 1,003 and 1,020

     before finishing strong with a

    1,109 effort for a 3,132 total and a

tie for ninth place overall. Team

Who's Eddie Byrd? of Fort Worth,

Texas, leads this year at the NBS

    with 3,241.

Brian Waliczek set the pace thisyear for Team NABR with a 697

series and was followed by 2007

    Regular All-Events champion

Mike Rose Jr. (665), Adam Barta

    (616) and Scott Pohl and Rob

    Gotchall with 577 apiece.

Team NABR returned to the lanes

April 19 and made moves in the

    Regular Doubles and Team All-

    Events standings, too.

Pohl (692) and Rose (634) landed

in a tie for sixth place in doubles

with a 1,326, while the team fin-

ished the day in third place in

    Team All-Events with 9,525.

Pohl also led the all-events effort

with 1,975 and was followed by

    Rose (1,961), Gotchall (1,930),Waliczek (1,889) and Barta

    (1,770). Junior Team USA

    Support 1 of Eagan, Minnesota,

    leads with 9,672.
