This is Trinity Sunday – Our belief that God is a God of three divine Persons. Each divine Person is fully God and
each is “the supreme reality of God,” as the Fourth Lateran Council (1215 AD) puts it. On this
solemnity, the Church contemplates the very nature of God, and the readings show us that all hu-
man knowledge of God comes from God’s action for and among us. The First Reading emphasiz-
es the Father, creating a people to be in relationship with him. The Gospel emphasizes the Son,
whose Incarnation is continued in the Church. As is often the case, the Second Reading ties the
three together. The Letter to the Romans concentrates on the Holy Spirit, by whom we are led to
be children of God, and made able to call out “Abba.” Today’s readings don’t explain the mys-
tery of the Trinity, but they do lead us to remember our experience of the Triune God. So who
should we address our prayers to. Should we address them to the Father, or to the Son, or to the
Holy Spirit? Jesus addressed his prayers to God the Father. The official and liturgical prayers of
the Church are also addressed to the Father, through the Son, and in the power of the Spirit. Our private prayers will nor-
mally address the divine Person whom we feel is most appropriate to the need or the intention at hand. If, for example,
we find our hearts full of gratitude for the wonders of creation, or for a great harvest, or for a glorious day at the beach,
we may find ourselves thanking God the Creator and Father of these gifts. If we find ourselves struggling with personal
suffering or sin or loneliness in our lives, we may find ourselves leaning on Jesus, the Suffering Servant and Savior. If
we need encouragement and inspiration for our teaching, our office work, our housework, our homework, or for our com-
puting and creative enterprises, we may turn to God the Spirit and Energizer. There is no hard and fast rule in this matter
of addressing our prayers to God. It is mainly a question of which divine Person suits us best as we try to focus our
hearts and center our needs on God. There is a certain harmony in the fact that God is three divine Persons and that they
correspond to the three levels of salvation. God as Creator and Father puts us on the road of life. God as Savior puts us
back on the road when we go off it through sin. God as Spirit directs the journey that is not yet finished but that will end,
God willing, where it all began—in the Godhead. Let us walk our road today and tomorrow and every day confidently,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Joseph Pollard in Fresh Light)
Children’s Liturgy of the Word continues to June 21st during the 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM Masses.
