Business GolfForest Akers Golf CoursePresenter: Jan Brintnall, MSU Professor, The School of Hospitality Business and LGPA Member Professional
You know that business is about relationships, networks and connections, but did you know that the golf course can be a better location than your office for a meeting, brainstorming session, team building activity or product launch? Besides expanding your network, building relationships, and meeting new clients, business golf allows you to form more personal connections and learn about an associate’s true character. Learn how business golf should be a part of your professional toolbox and how getting out of the office and on to the course can advance your career. This interactive session includes an overview of how to use golf in business and hands-on practice with putting, chipping and full swing instruction.
Please dress for the weather in casual golf attire including golf or athletic shoes. Bring your own clubs if desired. Clubs will be provided for those without clubs.
The Art of Civil DiscoursePresenter: Will Repko, Instructor, MSU Honors College
Civil discourse had taken a turn in recent years. This session will contain tips on how to win an argument without bulldozing your opinion. Learn how to study the problem, understand the arguments on all sides and discuss what solutions work best.

Service Based Learning - 50 Years StrongPresenters: Dan DiMaggio, Director, Student Engagement, MSU Alumni Office; K.C. Keyton, Program Coordinator, Co-Curricular Community Engagement Programs Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the MSU Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement is the oldest office of its kind on a university campus. In partnership with the campus community, the Center prepares students for lifelong civic and social responsibility in an increasingly diverse and global society. This session will focus on the wide range of programs provided by the Center, current student initiatives and statistics and the campus Spartans Will. SERVE partnership.
A 60-Year Curriculum?Presenter: Dr. R. Sam Larson, Assistant Dean, MSU Operations & Finance
A 60-year curriculum is a term being used to describe a relationship between student and institution that extends far beyond graduation into the career years and beyond. This sounds intriguing and perhaps even appropriate given our land-grant mission, but what might it mean in practice? In this session, we explore how MSU creates a seamless experience between undergraduate (and graduate) study and continuing education long after graduation.
Migratory Birds at the Corey Marsh Research CenterCorey Marsh Research Center, Laingsburg, MIPresenter: Jen Owen, MSU Associate Professor, Department of Fisheries & Wildlife
Take a ride out to the Corey Marsh Ecological Research Center and see firsthand how MSU students are engaging in research of migratory birds and the bird banding process. Learn why banding takes place, band a bird and have fun releasing it back to the wild. The 400-acre research center is the center for scientific research in natural resource restoration and management and collects long-term data on the health of the land bird population during breeding and migratory seasons.
FRIDAY, MAY 31 PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR ALL EVENTS.
Beyond the Classroom: Supporting our Student PopulationPresenters: Andrea Martineau, Program Coordinator, Fostering Academics, Mentoring Excellence (Fa.m.E) Program; Tana Fedewa, Director, MSU Sexual Assault Program; Dawn Kepler, MSU Collegiate Recovery Community Coordinator; Cara Ludlow, Alcohol & Drug Counselor, MSU Collegiate Recovery Community; Nicole Edmonds, Director of the MSU Student Food Bank
This session will showcase unique programs that provide MSU students with the tools they need to be successful academically while also caring for their mental, emotional and physical health. The session will feature a panel-style conversation highlighting Fa.m.E, MSU Sexual Assault Program, the Collegiate Recovery Community and the MSU Food Bank.
Creativity - Fear, Fulfillment and LifePresenter: Dr. Karl Gude, Director Media Sandbox and Professor of Practice, School of Journalism
Though most people don’t believe this, we’re all born with creativity, but somehow most of us lose our creative confidence and ability as time passes. In this session, we’ll explore why that happened, what that means to our lives and how we can get it back.
African-American Genealogy and the People of the Historic Slave TradePresenters: Vicki Essenmacher, Director of Marketing, MSU Alumni Office and avid Genealogist; Walter Hawthorne III, Associate Dean of Academic & Student Affairs; Dean Rehberger, Director of MATRIX and Associate Professor, Department of History
Did you know that MSU received a $1.47 million Mellon Foundation Grant to build a massive slave trade database that will change the way scholars and the public understand African slavery? Because slaves were rarely listed by name on traditional genealogy documents before the Civil War and the emancipation of their ancestors, this database could have a significant impact on African-American genealogy. Attendees will learn about the project from co-investigators and MSU faculty Walter Hawthorne and Dean Rehberger and will learn tips from a local genealogist on additional ways to research African-American ancestors before the 1870 census.

A 60-Year Curriculum?Presenter: Dr. R. Sam Larson, Assistant Dean, MSU Operations & Finance
A 60-year curriculum is a term being used to describe a relationship between student and institution that extends far past graduation into the career years and beyond. This sounds intriguing and perhaps even appropriate given our land-grant mission, but what might it mean in practice? In this session, we explore how we could create a seamless experience between undergraduate (and graduate) study and continuing education long after graduation.

Creativity- Fear, Fulfillment, and LifePresenter: Dr.
