Getting to Know the Trinity
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Have you thought lately about how much time you spend on your smartphone? Talk-ing, texting, on social media? Outside of work, most of our time in electronic communication is probably spent with family and friends — which is certainly not a bad thing. However, do we take our relationship with God as seriously as we do our human friends? This Sunday is Most Holy Trinity Sunday. Actually every Sunday is Trinity Sunday. It’s a little bit like Easter. Every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. This celebration is strategically placed right after Pentecost, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to know God and about God. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot even begin to talk about God because He is mystery — not a mystery — but mystery in Himself. When we use the word mystery in modern parlance, people think of murder mysteries like on television. A murderer does not want to get caught, but God wants to be discovered. When we talk about God being mystery in Himself, it means we can know God and about God, but we cannot know Him completely in this life. To say He is mystery means that we never stop wanting to know Him and about Him for the rest of our lives. The best way to get to know Him is spending time with Him, that is, praying to Him. That being said, there are some important doctrines about the Trinity that I should mention. In Ireland in the Fifth Century, St. Patrick used the image of a shamrock to demon-strate how God is both three and one. Some modern preachers reference water, a basic el-ement, because it can be liquid, solid or vapor while remaining the same substance. These are useful images to help us make sense how God is one substance but three Persons. But our problem is images. When we think of three persons in our minds, we automatically think of three beings. But God is one Being. Our imagination gets in the way of seeking to under-stand the Trinity. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are equally eternal. The Son is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit is the love of the Father and the Son. Remember: last Sunday I preached how the Holy Spirit is the breath of God. The Father and the Son eternally breathe the Holy Spirit. God is an eternal relationship — we might say friendship — within Himself. We can and should pray to all the persons of the Holy Trinity because we are all friends of God. This is how we will get to know Him. We are created in His own image and likeness, and so we are naturally drawn to Him. And the more we get to know Him, the more we will love Him.

Llegar a Conocer a la Trinidad Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, ¿Has pensado últimamente cuanto tiempo pasan en su celular ? ¿Cuánto tiempo pa-san hablando, mensajeando o en las redes sociales? Fuera del trabajo, probablemente la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo en la comunicaciónes electrónicas lo gastamos con familia y amigos — que ciertamente no es una cosa mala. ¿Sin embargo, tomamos nuestra relación con Dios tan seriamente como lo hacemos con nuestros amigos humanos?
En este Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad. Realmente cada Domingo es Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad. Es como un poquito de Pascua. Cada Domingo es una celebra-ción de la Resurrección de Jesús. Esta celebración está colocada estratégicamente justo después de Pentecostés, la venida del Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu Santo nos ayuda a cono-cer a Dios y a aprender sobre Dios. Porque sin el Espíritu Santo, nosotros no podemos ni siquiera comenzar hablar acerca de Dios porque Él es misterio – no un misterio – sino Él mismo es misterio. Cuando usamos la palabra misterio en nuestras charlas cotidianas mo-dernas, la gente piensa en asesinatos misteriosos como en la televisión. Un asesino no quiere ser atrapado, pero Dios quiere ser descubierto. Cuando decimos que Dios es miste-rio en Sí mismo, estamos diciendo que podemos conocer a Dios y saber sobre Dios, pero no podemos conocerlo completamente en esta vida. Decir que Él es misterio significa que no-sotros nunca cesamos de querer conocerlo y de saber sobre Él por el resto de nuestras vi-das. El mejor modo de conocerlo es pasar tiempo con Él, conversando con Él, es decir, orando a Él.
Habiendo aclarado esto, hay algunas doctrinas importantes sobre la Trinidad que de-bo mencionar. En Irlanda en el Siglo Quinto, San Patricio usó la imagen de un trébol para demostrar cómo Dios es tanto trino como uno. Algunos predicadores modernos prefieren el agua, un elemento básico, porque puede ser líquido, sólido o vapor mientras sigue siendo la misma sustancia. Éstas son imágenes útiles para ayudarnos a comprender cómo Dios es una sustancia pero tres Personas. Pero nuestro problema es la imagen. Cuando pensamos en tres personas en nuestra mente, automáticamente pensamos en tres seres. Pero Dios es un ser. Nuestra imaginación se interpone (en cierta forma) en nuestra comprensión de la Trinidad.
El Padre y el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo son igualmente eternos. El Hijo es eternamente concebido del Padre, y el Espíritu Santo es el amor del Padre y del Hijo. Recuerden: el Do-mingo pasado prediqué sobre cómo el Espíritu Santo es el aliento de Dios. El Padre y el Hijo eternamente respiran el Espíritu Santo. Dios es una relación eterna – podríamos decir una amistad – dentro de Sí mismo. Podemos y debemos rezarle a todas las personas de la Santísima Trinidad porque somos todos amigos de Dios. Así es como llegaremos a cono-cerlo. Somos creados a Su propia imagen y semejanza, y por lo tanto somos naturalmente atraídos a Él. Y mientras más Lo conozcamos, más Lo amaremos.

Eucharistic Procession
Sunday, June 3 at 2:00pm
On Corpus Christi Sunday, there will be a Eu-
charistic procession to the West Side of the
Henderson Co. Courthouse from St. Edward's
Parish in Athens at 2:00pm. There will be
an altar set up at which Benediction will take
place at around 3:00pm. Then the
procession will return to the church. The
Commissioners Court has given approval
and the procession will be protected and
accompanied by Athens Police Dept.
