Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This past week I have worked intensely with my two parish

finance councils to make sure the plans are clear for all

church bank accounts. The accounting of each fund should

clear when Fr. Paul takes over all the check signing. Here are

some important notes.

There is one checking account for the parish. Each church

location has its own saving account. The church savings

accounts are tapped for building maintenance projects, and

for plowing, mowing, heat and electric. The savings

accounts are replenished with any donations made

specifically for church-specific projects, by location-specific

fundraisers, and by a percentage of all offertory donations

tagged for that church.

Envelope numbers 1 through 48 continue to support Sacred

Heart Church Building Fund. Envelope numbers 49 through

80 continue to support St. Ignatius Church Building Fund,

and envelopes 81 through 101 continue to support St.

Vincent Church Building Fund. A percentage of envelope

donations are transferred each quarter.

A new offertory income report is going into the bulletin. The

weekly bulletin will only show the whole-parish weekly

budget, and the whole-parish collection totals. An extra

bulletin report each quarter will show the totals of money

saved in, or taken out of, each church maintenance account.

Again, these figures will depend on building maintenance

projects, heat and electric, and donations and offertory

donations tagged for church locations.

Please call the parish office if you are willing to make you

weekly parish donations with envelopes. God bless you.

Notes on the Extraordinary Form of the Mass in the Roman Rite

By Fr. Timothy Naples

The Traditional Latin Mass has now been designated the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite for the celebration of the Eucharist. All Roman Rite priests

offered the Mass in this Form, throughout the nearly 500 year period between

the Council of Trent and the Second Vatican Council.

Different “Forms” of the Mass, implemented by the successors of the Apostles, do not change the essentials of the Mass. The Catholic doctrines of the

Eucharist as a sacrament, always and only to be celebrated by a validly ordained Catholic priest, have stood firm in every century. The doctrines are expressed and affirmed in the essential elements of the Mass. What are the

essentials?

• A Liturgy of the Word, and Liturgy of the Eucharist

• The reading of Sacred Scriptures, especially the Gospels

• Expressions of the Faith (the Creeds and Credal Statements)

• Expressions of Penitence (the kyrie, the Confiteor/“I confess…”, Lord I am not worthy, etc.)

• The prayerful presentation/preparation of wheat bread and grape wine

• The Eucharistic Prayer offered by the priest celebrant

• Provision for the faithful to receive communion in the times and manners permitted by the Church

• Blessings and dismissals related to the consummation of the sacrifice of

Christ

The Traditional Latin Mass incorporated many worthy elements of the Church’s celebration of the Eucharist from her first 1500 years. Some of these elements,

although beautiful and beneficial, were taken away in a simplification of the Mass, which is now called the Ordinary Form. What is done in the Traditional

Latin Mass that is not in the Ordinary Form?

• Prayers “at the foot” of the altar, with two Confiteors

• Prayers prescribed solely to the altar servers (men only)

• Various additional prayers for the priest at different points

• Required “Ad Orientem” arrangement of the altar

• More genuflections and signs of the cross

• More places where servers are to ring bells

• Repetitions of the prayer “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter…”

• Requirements for distributing communion at railings or kneelers

• The reception of communion in reverent silence (always on the tongue)

• Requirements of music for sung Masses

• A “Last Gospel” which is read at the conclusion of every Mass Most Catholic parishioners nowadays are not familiar with these pieces in the

Extraordinary Form of the Mass. See below for more details about these.

Page 4: May 26, 2019 6th Sunday of Easter (Year C) Ascension of ... · 26/05/2019  · Rel.Ed/Catholic Mag $ 20 Easter Living Rosary $ 49 ... Notes on the Extraordinary Form of the Mass in

A few things have been added to the Ordinary Form of the Mass, either new elements or new options. Although familiar to us, some additions to the Ordinary Form are still very new experiments in the history of the Church. Here are some.

• Allowance of translations of all prayers into vernacular languages

• Lay readers for the Scriptures in English

• Several Eucharistic Prayers for the celebrant to choose from

• Various small options where priests and parishioners decide between several allowed actions or prayers

• Allowance of the priest to be on the “other” side of a freestanding altar

• In some countries, provisions have been made for the possibility of female altar servers, and for allowance of communion received in the hand.

The most notable contrast with the Ordinary Form, is that no provision has been made to translate any parts of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass into other languages. All parts are prayed in Latin.

The role of altar serving in the Extraordinary Form unites the prayers of the altar servers more closely with actions of the priest. The servers respond to the prayers of the priest even when the congregation might not respond. This made a significant connection between the altar boys and the priests who celebrated Mass. It certainly contributed to the appreciation of the Mystery of the Eucharist in some priestly vocations.

The Extraordinary Form is celebrated Ad Orientem, a phrase literally meaning “facing East.” Hence, the priest always faces the main crucifix of the church sanctuary. This was the most prevalent posture of prayer for most Masses in the Church’s history. Both the people and priest would be oriented to the East, as if on pilgrimage, or as if climbing Mount Calvary, with the priest as the leader. Priests can still celebrate Mass Ad Orientem in the Ordinary Form. This is a somewhat growing practice, and it can challenge both priests and laity in a good way. In America many people attach their faith and their Sunday practices, in an unhealthy way, to the personality and affability of the priests and ministers. The faithful can grow in devotion to the universal nature and power of the sacraments by adjusting their consciousness to “look past” the celebrant, to Christ present on the altar.

The requirements for the giving and receiving of communion in the Extraordinary Form are very specific. The directives for communion allow it to be received only on the tongue, while an alter server always holds a communion paten. The priest always administers communion, and he says in Latin “May the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ preserve thy soul unto life eternal.” The priest adds “amen,” not the communicant.

The Extraordinary Form of the Mass always concludes with the reading of the Prologue of the Gospel of John. This is significant in several ways. The Prologue of John is one of the best and most beautiful summaries of the Gospel message, and thus a fitting summary to the Sacrifice of Calvary renewed upon the altar. Additionally, just as the Eucharist becomes the focus of the Church building once the Mass is concluded, the Prologue of John refocuses the Church on “the Word become flesh” to dwell among us. A literal translation of the Prologue says Jesus “Tabernacled” among us, and so the Mass ends with Christ in the Tabernacle, and the mystery of his Incarnation having taken its effects in us.

May 25–31, 2019 FOR THE DIOCESE OF BURLINGTON

I sit down for the third time today in a meeting room to tell yet another family their loved one is dying and will probably not make it back home. The patient I have been taking care of for years is getting

to walk his daughter down the aisle; praise God the treatment worked!

A patient’s husband embraces me and thanks me as we say the final goodbye and watch her being laid to eternal rest.

I see the sunlight shine on a patient as he walks out of the hospital; having defied all odds, he is reunited with his family once again.

As physicians, we rejoice, mourn, pray and sit in silence with our patients on a daily basis. We are therapists, sisters/brothers, mothers/fathers, sons/daughters, neighbors, mediators, healers, pastors and friends all rolled into one. We enter this professional journey for the love of working and helping other people, curiosity in pursuit of knowledge, research and love of teaching. Most of the time this profession gives us much more than we can ever repay it.

For Catholic physicians, however, medicine is more than a profession. It is a vocation — a divine call to manifest God’s sacrificial love for others and the Church by fulfilling one’s own commitment and obligations in medicine. It is our duty to bring faith and medicine together in order to uphold the dignity and truth of the wholeness of the person we seek to heal.

Physicians — the persons writing your scripts, ordering your tests, always seemingly running behind — are the same people who have been late to family dinners, missed out on holidays, fallen asleep agonizing over their daily decisions, trying to uphold their faith in a profession with ever-growing demands on them.

How can we help physicians recapture the true nature and joy of their vocation in Christ in a world trying to dismantle the union of the body and soul?

One answer is fellowship. As the Catholic dictionary describes, fellowship is the body

of the faithful bound together by a common faith in Christ,

common worship, and common allegiance to the Church’s divinely established authority. In fellowship, physicians and other healthcare professionals can find a place to be grounded, a place to recharge, learn, vent, pray, mourn, be heard and themselves be healed. The Catholic Medical Association provides such opportunities for anyone working in the medical profession, and forming a local guild brings these opportunities to the local level. As the CMA describes, guilds not only provide fellowship but also education, the ability to serve the local Church and public and a base for medical students and residents to find guidance, mutual support and witness.

There has been growing interest in forming a guild of the CMA in Vermont in support of those working in the medical profession. In pursuit of this endeavor, a group of physicians and clergy have come together to embark on this journey. To better understand the needs and interest here, we invite anyone working in any aspect of healthcare to come to a night of evening prayer with a reception to follow at the rectory with Burlington Bishop Christopher Coyne. Family members also are welcome to join us in prayer, fellowship and discussion.

— Dr. Marta Kokoszynska, is an instructor, pulmonary and critical care medicine, at the University of Vermont

Larner College of Medicine.
