MAY 24th HOW TO HANDLE SCHOOL SICK DAYS from HEALTHLINEParents do their best to keep kids healthy during flu season, but sometimes even the most vigilant preventive measures cannot ward off the flu. When your child gets sick with the flu, keeping them home from school can help them recover faster. It also helps prevent the virus from spreading to other children in the school, which is critical to keeping everyone as healthy as possible. Healthcare professionals recommend that sick children stay home until they are well enough to go back to school. This is typically about 24 hours after symptoms begin to improve. In some cases, however, it can be difficult to determine whether your child is well enough to return to school. Consider the following signs as you make your decision. DROP OFF TIME BEFORE SCHOOL The school yard is not supervised by staff before school until 8:45am. This means that children should not be dropped off before 8:40am in the morning. If you need to leave the children before that time they should be booked into the Before School Program. The OSHCLUB web- site is as follows - www.oshclub.com.au or ring 8564 9000. DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY WIN Last Friday our Cross Country team became District Champions – the thirteenth time in 15 years. This result means that our students have won both major Athletic events this year. We are always very proud of all our students who represent our school and equally in the way they train and do their very best at these important sporting events. Thank you to Dale Goldsmith and Aaron Thomson for their commitment and the excellent preparation afforded to our students. My thanks also to the many parents who attended and supported our team! Please see a detailed report in this newsletter. REMOVAL OF TREES Earlier this year, we engaged the services of an Arborist whose report indicated the pine trees are well and truly at the end of their life. The Department of Education (DET) has agreed to fund the removal of all pine trees from our site along Liverpool Road and Mountain Highway. Given the potential risks not having these trees removed, the Depart- ment will be engaging a tree company to remove these during the next school holidays. In speaking with DET personnel, they confirmed that the Department are removing pine trees from a quite number of schools. While it is sad to remove these trees, it provides us with an amazing opportunity to plant colourful native trees of our selection along the fence lines of Mountain Highway and Liverpool Road. The children will definitely be involved in the planting of trees. May 24th 5/6 YMCA incur. 29th 5/6 Winter Round Robin Rd 1 31st 5/6 YMCA incur. NORTH EASTERN VICTORIA REGION (NEVR) CONCERT On 22nd May, students participated in the NEVR Concert at Hamer Hall, accompanied by Colin Hart-ley. The children have been practising for a few weeks and also attended rehearsals. They thor-oughly enjoyed this experience and in particular, performing at such an amazing venue. My thanks to Colin for preparing the students and to the parents who supported the children and attended the concert. DANCESTARS PERFORMANCE Tomorrow night and Saturday night, we have some students competing in the finals of the DanceFair. We wish them great success and look forward to hearing the results. My thanks to Colin Hartley for providing his expertise and rehearsal time to ensure our students perform to the best of their ability. BUILDING UPDATE This week the contractors are BUSY completing the plastering, painting and seating inside the gym-nasium in preparation for the installation of the wooden flooring next week. Work continues both inside the new office building and outside with a concrete ramp being prepare for the ‘STAFF ONLY’ entrance outside of our science room. Balustrades will be installed on the staircases and ramps on both sides of the building leading up to our new office foyer. NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK This week we acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. Nationally we thank the millions of volunteers who make a profound impact in their communities and on society, through giving a little time. At The Basin Primary School we have enormous support from volunteers – assis-tance with classroom reading, excursions, PFA, School Council, sporting events, banking, sporting events, fundraising events and many more. We really value parents and friends volunteering their time to help give our student the best opportunities possible. Thank you. PARALYMPIAN VISIT – MATTHEW HAANAPPEL On Thursday 24th May our year 3 & 4 students were lucky enough to be paid a visit by Australian Para Athlete, Matthew Haanappel. Matt has represented Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Paralym-pics as well as competing at the recent Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. It was wonderful for the students to be able to hear him share about his challenges and successes throughout his career that have seen him compete at such a high level. We know the students really enjoyed Matt’s visit as they reflected on how we can acknowledge and celebrate diversity. WET WEATHER PLAYTIMES The cold and wet weather has hit and students will experience wet day timetables during this term and next term. Please remember that students are not to bring valuable or precious belongings to school. Teachers will provide games and activities for students to do during wet day timetables. PFA HOT LUNCH What a perfect day yesterday to have a hot lunch for our students! A huge thankyou to Sara Wood and Lisa Parr who did such an amazing job organising this special treat for our students and for spending multiple hours in our office over the last two weeks collecting the Fish & Chip orders and counting the money. On behalf of the children, thank you very much ladies! Graeme Russell

GRADE 5/6 SCIENCE –

LIVE STREAMING OF IN-CLASS SESSION WITH PROFESSOR BRIAN COX

This term in Science, we are learning about ‘Earth and Space Sciences’, and we were fortunate to be able to register for an in-class session with world renowned English physicist, Prof Brian Cox on Tuesday 22nd May. Hosted by Australia’s Science Channel, primary and secondary school students across Australia were invited to submit questions about general science, physics, astronomy and the cosmos. This live streaming session coincided with our 6S science class, and we were delighted to hear Prof Cox answer a question from 5/6G’s An-drew Berezy, who asked Prof Cox ‘are black holes a highway to another dimension?’ For the answer to this fantastic question, and to learn more about Prof Cox’s thoughts on how the universe works, go to https://australiascience.tv/livestream/ for a recording of this session (the answer to Andrew’s question is around the 16 minute mark). Congratulations to Andrew, and to all of the Grade 5 and 6 students who submitted ques-tions and for making the most of this wonderful opportunity. Helen Clark - Grade 5/6 Science
