CHURCHES CHANGE THE WORLD...

“I come to my garden, my sister, my bride;I gather my myrrh with my spice,I eat my honeycomb with my honey,I drink my wine with my milk.Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love.”

-Song of Solomon 5:1Song of Solomon is one of the most incredible books in the Bible. It is a celebration of two young lovers singing songs to one another. Some scholars have suggested that the story is allegorical, that is tells a love affair between God and Israel or even Christ and the church. I like the first interpre-tation better. It is a love story beyond love stories, of pure, intoxicating love. It is romantic love to be certain and even explicit at times, but it is also about unconditional, selfless love. It is captivating because the writer uses this intoxicating love to share a vision for how we ought to love one another. The writer is bursting with love and af-fection and is compelled to then share with those willing to listen. The writer wants us to grasp the beauty and the love that is possible. Once that love is within reach it then can (to borrow from another passage about love) “bear all things, believe all things, hope all things and endure all things.” (1 Corin-thians 13:7)I love this first verse of chapter 5. “Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love.” On direct flight from Dallas to Portland the person next to me had at least four gin and tonics. By the end of the flight, he was drunk and loved everyone, but that is not what we are talking about here. We see people in-toxicated all around us. They are drunk

on substances. They are intoxicated by power. They are consumed and drunk with greed. It is easy to spot those things. When was the last time you saw someone drunk with love? It hap-pens around a table with old friends, sharing stories and laughing about shared memories. It happens in the embrace of reunion with family mem-bers. It happens in moments of bliss when the worries of the world seem to dissipate around us. Sometimes, that drunk love fades. Sometimes there is work to be done, laundry to be folded, and bills to pay. Sometimes there is loss and grief and pain and heartache. Whatever happens though, we have to stop to eat and drink, these things are essential for our survival. I would argue that finding time to love is also essential for our survival. As Paul reminds us, love is everything. “If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and under-stand all mysteries and all knowledge,

and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my posses-sions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)Peace and love, Pastor Matt

Classroom UpdatesPreschool - 1st Grade with VickiThe kids made wonderful mother’s day cards by painting with fruits and vegetables. My favorite part was the yellow flowers and sunshines painted with lemons. It made such a wonderful visual texture.

2nd - 5th Grade with LeahThe kids pulled their sandy beach creations from their molds before taking some time to practice their bell playing.

Middle and High School with Emily and MirandaThe students finished their lesson on “pre” and “post” Easter Jesus. They also made a timeline of when the vari-ous books of the new testament were written. They talked about the differ-ence between the idea of a completed

book, handed down from the heavens and the Bible as it was put together by many, many years of faithful scholars and writers over a larger span of time. It was a brilliant lesson by our fabulous high school teachers.

Sunday, June 4 from 5-7 p.m., hosted at First Congregational UCC. This will be a fun end of the year BBQ with lots of food, yard games, and water balloons. Together, let’s enjoy one of the last weekends before summer break. CYC events are open to any middle and high school students from our church.
