Crime WatchDon’t have an alarm system? Here are some ideas to shore up
your homes weak spots and make the crook’s job more difficult?
• “Case” your house just as a burglar would. Where is the easiest entry? How can you make it more burglar-resistant?• Trim trees and shrubs near doors and windows so that they don’t provide cover for a thief. Think before you install a tall privacy fence around the back yard; it could give thieves more privacy to work.• Install exterior lights with motion detectors, mounted out of easy reach, to reduce the darkness.• Add upgraded locks, deadbolts or other simple
security devices to doors and windows, and keep them locked.• Don’t put your home address on your key ring, and don’t hide spare keys in a “secret” place outside the house.• Notify the sheriff’s office (904) 264-6512 if you see suspicious strangers in your neighborhood.• Locking doors and windows whenever you are away from home is a must. The same holds true for your auto. Never leave your auto unlocked.
One of the other things you can do is report any streetlights that are not working. Streetlights provide safety and security only if they’re working. It’s easy to do; either call Clay Electric Cooperative at (800) 224-4917 or go on line to www.clayelectric.com and click on the Contact Us at the top center and then click on Outdoor Light Repair under General Inquiries.
Eagle HarborSPRING HAS SPRUNG! Spring is here! The garden stores are filled with colorful flowers and interesting plants and we’re all feeling the need for a little color and clean up. Now is a good time to turn your attention outward and take a good look at your curb appeal.
• Tree branches overhanging your roof? Storm season is right around the corner and now is a good time to trim back those branches that may threaten your home.
• Exterior home color faded? Florida sun is hard on paint and most of our homes are 20 years or older. You may want to consider repainting the exterior of your home. Remember, prior review and approval is required by the community ARC for all exterior changes and/or improvements prior to implementation, which includes repainting your home’s exterior.
• Now is also a good time to test your sprinkler system. St. Augustine grass is very hardy but, if we have another dry spell like last August, our grass can be severely stressed if it isn’t regularly watered.
• Lawn looking brown/sparse? Is it dead in spotS? Have weeds taken over? Services that spray for weeds and fertilize are surprisingly inexpensive. Although
homeowners can certainly undertake these tasks themselves, they are not able to purchase the sorts of chemicals used by professionals. Check these websites for good tips on maintaining Florida lawns:
www.patsnurseryinc.com/wp-content uploads/ 2014/04/Pats-Nursery-Lawn -Maintenance-1.pdf
www.thespruce.com/tips -for-growing-green-lawns-2130969
We all enjoy and take pride in living in a beautiful and well-maintained community. If we all take a little time and give a little attention to the maintenance of our homes, we can ensure the appearance, and value, of our most important investment.
Eagle Harbor HOA & ARC monthly meetings:*Meetings will be held as scheduled provided the state-wide ‘Stay at Home Order’ has been lifted1880 Eagle Harbor Pkwy, 32003EH ARC: Tue., May 12 at 5:30 p.m. EH HOA: Wed., May 20 at 12 p.m.
