President’s Message

First of all, I held up the newsletter to see if Dean’s Place was going to be ready for action.

As everyone knows by now, a lot of the national tours have been canceled due to the virus. We’re almost half way through the year and though we have nothing planned as of yet for June, The June meeting will be at Dean’s Place June 4th. I have been over to Dean’s and looked over the dining room and there’s plenty of space for up to 45 members. We can discuss having a tour in June at the meeting.

In case everyone wants to know how the construction industry is in the valley. I spend half of my days driving around the valley and traffic is starting to pick up. A great sign of everyone on the move. I have seen new starts in Henderson and surrounding areas. Building continues to

move forward. When talking to some of the developers, they say they have plenty of business to last through next year. Some projects are so big that who knows how long it will take to complete. Amazon is building a warehouse in NLV that will cover, under roof, 273 acres, +-12,000,000 sq. ft-. Down south of the Raiders Practice Facility, at Volunteer and Executive Airport Dr., another 300-acre project is starting to unfold. So, despite all the negative news and the mess they have spun out of this, we will emerge better and stronger. I actually sat in a Roberto’s and had lunch with another fellow salesman today.

Hopefully we will be able to gather at Rosati’s for our annual Pizza Run in July. If not, we’ll still have pizza in the park. We will know more by the June meeting. Haven’t heard any news on the July fest in St. George, but I’m sure it’s still on. Jumping to September Carla is starting to do the leg work for Tuachan So if you want to know more contact her and get on the list.

I’m assuming everyone is healthy and doing well? We have had a few folks call and email us to see how we are doing and there has been no bad news to report… Barbara Baudoin is doing great! The best I have seen her in a long time. Carla has been dedicating her time to making sure she eats right and is getting back on the path to recovering. Keep cracking that whip Carla!

See you at the June meeting.

John Pendergast

Notes from VMCCA 2nd Quarter Meeting

Submitted by Dion Stams

VMCCA President Ray Maxfield called to order the 2nd Quarter 2020 meeting about 4:35pm (PT) 4/16/2020, with apologies to John Munoz that Ray had not considered the timing of the phone call in the Pacific Time Zone.

New Treasurer Elaine Johnsen has set up local bank accounts for her to use as Treasurer and has had funds transferred from past Treasurer Bob Edelman. She requested and received Board approval for up to $1,500 to acquire VMCCA-owned hardware and software for the Treasurer to use. Previously, Bob used his personal equipment, and Elaine explained that transfers of duties between outgoing and incoming Treasurers is a cleaner process when personal equipment is not involved.

Membership VP Jim Talbot compared Jan. 1 – Apr. 15 new member numbers between 2019 and 2020. That period in 2019 had 56 new memberships (93 new individuals), while the same period in 2020 had 50 new memberships (84 new individuals).

As of Apr. 15, 2020, membership numbers are: ● 1,396 couple memberships and 376 single memberships (total 2,792 individuals) ● 79 lifetime memberships (118 individuals) ● 14 free memberships (for various reasons) ● 13 advertiser memberships ● 8 student memberships ● 5 first-time military memberships

● 1,891 total memberships (3,330 individuals) (NOTE: while I tried to accurately write down all numbers, the totals above do not properly add up -- Dion)

Activities VP Sally Murray stated after many COVID-19 related tour cancellations, Western National, Muscle Car, and AAA Glidden (Revival) are still on for now.

Publications VP Keith Wyatt said a candidate to handle the new website came forth, impressed several members of the Board, and the full Board then approved Rod Travers to positions as both Director of Advertising and Website Content Manager. Details of contractual terms to be provided by email to full Board by 4/23/2020 for review, with subsequent approval/disapproval by email.

(Note: this was subsequently approved)

One of the Regional Directors found that providing info about insurance via VMCCA helped reluctant local members to pay national dues (rather than “only thing $40/year gets you is the Bulb Horn”). Pending approval from the insurance company, the policy terms will be made more readily available for review by members.

3rd Quarter 2020 Meeting is scheduled to happen at the Cottonwood AZ Western National Tour, but would be by phone (or videoconference) if COVID-19 also cancels that tour.

2nd Quarter 2020 Meeting adjourned about 6:50pm (PT).

Hello!!

It is time again to plan our annual Tuachan trip! I have called to get information about ticket rates and room rates. I have already blocked rooms at the Best Western this year.

The room rate is $84.00 The play ticket is $41.00

We usually discuss this in May with a sign up sheet. Since we didn't get to have a May meeting this year, we have to do it this way. Please email me at [email protected] OR call me at 702.277.3675 by June 4th to let me know if you want to go. Please tell me how many tickets and how many rooms you will need so I can give an exact count. I currently have a block of 10 rooms and 25 tickets. There are already 12 people confirmed and 5 rooms. I will then need your money ffor tickets by the July meeting which is July 2. I will then email you or give you the room information so you can make your arrangements as before.

We are staying at a Best Western this year that is very nice. The deadline dates for tickets and rooms are July this year not August. If you have any questions about this, please call or email me anytime.

The play we will be seeing is Beauty and the Beast

Editor’s Note

It started innocent enough.

My wife and I were at a flea market in Massachusetts when I spotted a Matchbox car that I remembered from when I was a kid. I bought it. Somehow It satisfied something deep inside me.

At that moment, I became a collector. A short time later, we attended our first antique auction. We came home with a trunk full of stuff. I bought a large “box lot” for $20 that was full of cast iron and pressed steel cars, trucks and motorcycles. The hunt was on.

Mary had a quilting pal who worked for an auctioneer…who happened to be looking to hire another clerk. I now had an inside track!

At the time, we had a 14 room Victorian house with a huge attic and an attached carriage house. Space was not an issue. Collecting one thing expanded into collecting something else. As a collecting buddy of mine used to say: “It ain’t so much the havin as it is the gettin”. Sometimes I think maybe I’m not descended from apes…but from a squirrel. The difference between a collector and a hoarder is just the value of thier stuff.

Collecting can be very expensive. Or not.

My grandmother amased a fine collection of plastic swizzle sticks from her travels…for free!

For a while I collected auto dealer postcards which typically cost a couple of bucks…but in the pre ebay days were very hard to find. After I had filled binder after binder with over 2000, I sold them all…keeping just 3…just as a reminder of the thrill of the hunt.

When you meet another collector, thier interests often lead to an understanding and appreciation of even more stuff. Sometimes the coolness factor is off the charts.

Everyone knows Danny has a Tatra. But did you know he has a remote control Tatra toy? In the original box! How cool is that?

I went to Max’s house to photograph his Model A Ford…but came away smitten by his fine collection of lunch boxes. Yes! Lunch boxes.

This month we are introduced to another collection in our VMCCA community: John Munoz’s pedal cars. And as you will see, they don’t have to be from the 50’s to be collectible. Models from the 1980s are now “antiques”! The kids that grew up with them from that era are now in their 40s…and looking to rekindle those fond memories. Our hobby marches on!

Car of the Month1979 Little Tikes Cozy Coupe

A long time ago in a century far far away;

Before the days of glowing electric screens in everyone’s face, kids had toys that were often modeled after real life. Some of the lucky kids had pedal cars.

The first Pedal Cars were manufactured in the 1890s, modeled after the 3 wheeled Karl Benz Motorwagen. As cars progressed and changed, the pedal cars changed to match the styles of the times. Some of the more desirable examples are those that look like the most popular vintage cars today. There were also fire trucks, police cars, even airplanes and trains. Some of the top line cars had battery operated headlights and tail lights.

I had a pedal car when I was little. It was a green army jeep with a white star on the hood. The one in the picture is like the one I had. Unlike the one in the picture my pedal car stayed out in the weather and was the victim of multiple Godzilla attacks. Sadly my pedal car went to the dump about the time I got my first 3 speed bicycle. I wish I had known as kid how valuable some of these old pedal cars would become.

Kids born in the 80s might very well have had a toy car but likely it wasn’t stamped steel, but much like the cars of the time, made of plastic, molded plastic.

In one of the pictures is junior member Mackenzie Mason at about two years old with her first car, a 2015 Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. This is the optional princess edition with Pink sides, blue top and a functional gas cap. (The little Tikes gas pump is available as well as a trailer) The car is run by either two toddler feet or one chubby Grandpa.

The original Cozy Coupe was released in 1979 and was designed by Jim Mariol, a former car parts designer for Chrysler. By 1991 the Cozy Coupe was the USA’s top selling car, selling about 500,000 units that year. By comparison the other two top sellers were the Honda Accord at 399,000 units and the Ford Taurus at 299,000. The Cozy Coupe is now in the top 20 top selling models of all time.

This is my 2 year old Granddaughter Riley (also a JR member) with her lady bug Cozy Coupe and the two girls in their electric 57 Chevy

The first Cozy Coupe is on permanent display at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland alongside the DeLorean, the Corvette and the Model T Ford.

Like it’s metal predecessors, the Cozy Coupe comes in many different styles including a fire truck, police car, lady bug and dinosaur. There’s even a monster truck with a trailer.

Made in Hudson Ohio these could turn out to be true American Classics.

A few months ago I found an original early 80s Cozy Coupe. It was all there but well used. I picked it up for a few dollars thinking it would be a fun restoration project for myself and granddaughters. Replacement parts and decals are available and I plan to document the restoration for newsletters to come.

We need to complete the project soon as Makenzie, now 6 has her eye on daddy’s 69 Satellite.

1972 Mustang Convertible

$38,000 or reasonable offer

Restored in 1995 at Moses Automotive, a restoration shop in Ohio.

This Mustang has been sitting garaged in AZ with the battery removed for a few years. It hasn’t been started for a while and needs to be detailed inside and out from dust under the cover. It should have critical fluid replacement done to freshen it up and clean any dry residual in the gas tank.

This car was literally only taken to car shows…not a daily driver.  It is a really clean and nice restoration that was appraised in 2015 for $38,500.

This unpresidented shutdown of non-essential services has left us without pictures of activities to display here in your newsletter. We are all hopeful that this will be changing soon. In the mean time, if you have something you’ve been doing to stay occupied that you would like to share with fellow VMCCA members, please email a few pictures and a note for inclusion in the next newsletter to: [email protected]

I will share some pictures of one of my activities. Model building. Yah! Remember the smell of model cement?

In light of these challenging times, the models I’m building are amalgamations of multiple kits. The results are inspired by the film of a dystopian future: Mad Max Fury Road. Here are a few:
