Club Night Wednesday, 8 May 2019

OTMC Clubrooms, Young St, South Dunedin, 7.30pm

This month’s guest speaker is Nick Allen. Nick is a passionate tramper and climber. Diagnosed with

Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 25, Nick was in a wheelchair

and thought his climbing dreams were over. With the help of

rehabilitation specialists, Nick has been able to get back

outdoors, and in 2015, he climbed Island Peak in Nepal. Nick

is also passionate about helping others and has set up a

fund to help others with MS overcome the obstacles that

prevent them from getting outdoors. Nick will talk about his

experiences on the way to Island Peak and afterward, and will

share his passion for getting others outdoors through the

Mastering Mountains Charitable Trust.

SECTION LIBRARY BOOK SALE

Before and after Nick’s presentation, we will have the

Section’s Book Sale. We’ve had nearly 400 books stored at the OTMC Clubrooms for years – and it’s time

they went to good homes and were read once again. The books will be very reasonably priced and sold

on a cash and carry basis. Please bring lots of cash and large carry bags to take your picks home. More

details next page.

Trips and events calendar . . . . Wednesday, 8 May 2019. Section Club Night and Book Sale, OTMC Clubrooms, Young St, South Dunedin, Doors Open 7.30pm sharp for Banff ticket sales and for the start of the Section Book Sale. The May Club night will feature Nick Allen, who’s determination and new lifestyle has seen him return to mountaineering despite being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Before and after Nick’s presentation, the Section will begin its Book Sale; an opportunity for you to buy great climbing books and magazines for a fraction of their value. We have taken out the very valuable first editions (which may be auctioned later) but will have nearly 300 books for sale. Pricing is simple – two books of your choice for $5 or five books of your choice for $10 – and a huge selection of magazines are free. We’re not trying to make money; just get these books good homes. Display tables will be set up before and after Nick’s presentation – cash sales only.

Central Otago Section Autumn Section Trip – Mt Crichton. 11 – 12 May. Wendy and Bridg are leading their Autumn Section Trip to Mt Crichton and may be able to squeak in a few Dunedinites. A great trip, with an amazing alpine camp at Lake Isobel. Good for anyone with a medium to high level of fitness and used to off track travel. A maximum of 12 people on this trip, so get in quick!! Banff Mountain Film Festival, 18 and 20 June, Regent Theatre Dunedin. More info and a link to the online booking form on the next page. For this year’s clip, check out https://vimeo.com/303143837 Mid-winter Christmas Party, 22 and 23 June. This year the Otago Section will return to French Ridge Hut, the site of the first mid-winter Christmas trip in recent history. We will retrace those early

explorers from 2008 by driving to the road end after work on Friday and walking to Aspiring Hut for the night. On Saturday we will continue the tradition by carrying far too much food, Christmas decorations, and a Secret Santa present up to the hut for our festivities. Sunday will offer a possible climb of Mt French, before returning to our cars and to Dunedin. Ski Touring , 29 and 30 June. Matteo is leading a ski touring club trip on the Old Man Range with the objective of reaching Nicholson’s Hut for the last Saturday of the 29th of June. The tour is easy and requires a moderate level of fitness and off piste ski ability. It will suit beginners who have had previous touring experience and want to move further away into remote places. The 17th NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival in Wanaka and Queenstown (28 June to 6 July) will host a wide range of shows in 2019. The event will once again include talks, films, workshops and readings. More details and bookings at https://www.mountainfilm.nz/

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is the largest, and one of the most prestigious, mountain festivals in the world. Hot on the heels of the festival held every autumn in Banff, Canada the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour hits the road. From approximately 360 films entered into the annual festival, the world’s best mountain films are chosen to travel the globe. The New Zealand Alpine Club is the proud NZ host of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, bringing the spirit of outdoor adventure to screenings around the country. In Dunedin, the local Section of NZAC has chosen a separate programme for each of the two nights – so coming to both will give you a huge range of films, with no repeats, plenty to please, and a good discount on the second night. The NZ Tour is the Alpine Club’s largest fundraiser with all proceeds from the Tour going towards supporting the Club with a range of programmes like the upgrade of Club Section gear, the purchase of mountain safety equipment which is available to anyone to hire, NZAC beginner instruction courses, Club hut maintenance, volunteer development and supporting youth climbing in Dunedin. The Banff tickets for 2019 are now on sale. Adult, $19.50 one night, $35 two nights; children, students and NZAC members, $15 one night, $25 two nights. Usual booking charges will apply when purchased at the Regent Theatre or online at www.regenttheatre.co.nz/show_event/banff-film-festival-world-tour-2019/ You can avoid these booking fees by purchasing at the next NZAC meeting on 8 May at OTMC Clubrooms, Young St, South Dunedin. When buying at the Club night, members MUST show their NZAC membership card to purchase tickets. We accept cash only and have available a very limited number of tickets – so a maximum of 5 tickets per person per screening please.

Instructor training offer The section is looking for members who are experienced mountaineers to help with instructing our Beginner Snowcraft courses. If you are interested in sharing your skills and knowledge with enthusiastic members who are keen to experience the alpine environment, then please get in touch with Heather Rhodes (027 258 6534 or [email protected] ) and provide some details of your experience and any qualifications. Ideally we are looking for 1 or 2 members who are likely to be able to instruct (in Otago or elsewhere) for multiple seasons. Opportunities are available for development training to support you in the role of volunteer instructor - the first training course, which is being planned at the moment, is a fully-funded two-day training course at the Remarkables in June. Banff funds well spent The Otago Section Committee decided to use some of the income from last year’s Banff Film Festival to support a proposal to start a Youth Climbing Club in Dunedin and it was great last week to get acknowledgement of the success of the programme from organiser Tim Bartholomew. The Chairman NZAC Otago Section Dear Riley, I can’t believe it’s been a year already! I would like take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to the NZAC for their help in making this club a reality. The kids are getting so much out of being involved with their peers. It’s been so amazing seeing kids from different schools and age groups forge lasting friendships. They have not only been participating with the climbing trips that I have organised but also arranged their own adventures like mountain biking and ice skating. Their rock climbing skills have improved remarkably. Most of the are now lead climbing including cleaning climbs, some basic rescues and anchor building. On top of this they are also learning to ‘read’ climbs, work on projects, support others and problem solve as a team. The culture of the club is safe, supportive and above all fun! New Section Website for easy trip booking Sign-up now to get fast and simple trip information, booking and info. Just a reminder to section members that the Otago section has introduced a new trip planning system at our section website www.osonzac.org.nz. On the website, you can organize and join section events and events organized privately by members, and you can subscribe to email notifications when certain types of events (rock climbing, mountaineering, etc.) are posted to the site. Our aim with this site is to increase the number of trips organized by the section and improve our members' ability to connect with each other. To sign up for an account, please visit https://www.osonzac.org.nz/SigningUp.php. Non-members are also welcome. For those who have already signed up: please check your email preferences. The default setting is that you will receive no notifications. A number of people have requested accounts but not changed their email settings from the default.

Process for PLB hire . . . . The Otago Section has two PLBs for Section members to use when heading outdoors. Rental is free for NZAC members but $5 per day for non-members. So that we can track the rentals, and respond if something goes wrong, the Section has created an online booking form at https://goo.gl/forms/TQJrhMZxacHf30qP2 When the form is completed online the results are automatically loaded into a spreadsheet in the Section’s Google Drive, so we have a record of your rental and planned trip details. All that you do then is to arrange to collect a unit from either Keith Moffat [email protected] or Riley Smith [email protected] . Further contact details in the newsletter.

Section Safety Gear Rental

Our eight sets of avalanche equipment and eight sets of snowshoes are now available for rent from the new Hunting and Fishing shop, now at 141 Crawford Street, in Dunedin. The new shop is open seven days till 5.30 weekdays, 5pm Saturday and 4pm Sunday. More details at www.huntingandfishing.co.nz . The rental costs are $5 per day for an avalanche set of transceiver, probe and shovel and $5 per day for snowshoes for all Alpine Club members. You MUST show your current membership card to receive that rate. Not a member, or don’t have your card? Then the fee is $10 per day and you will be required to pay a $20 deposit. Members are welcome to collect gear on Friday and return Monday and two day’s rental will apply. If you wish to make other arrangements, please contact Keith or any of the committee and we will sort things out BEFORE you go into the shop. If you have any issues with the gear or rentals, please don’t hassle the staff at Hunting and Fishing as they are doing us a huge favour by running the rental scheme for us
