St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School May Newsletter 2019

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK: “Living As Joyful Deciples” May 5th – May 10th, 2019This year we celebrate Catholic Education Week with our theme, “Renewing the Promise.” For

more than 160 years, Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic Schools have been integrating our faith into all aspects of school life, nurturing the gifts and talents of every student. We celebrate the

distinctive contribution that Catholic Schools provide, giving thanks and offering our prayers for all those who faithfully journey with our young people each day. Our school community will celebrate

Catholic Education Week 2018 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age.

This year we celebrate the year of the School. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism, and it is the

‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name, but the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local

parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. We have accomplished many wonderful things this year and this week allows us to celebrate our many successes and reminds us that our

faith journey and call to discipleship continue. During the month of May, many of our students have been called to join with Jesus at the table of the Lord. We pray for our students receiving the

Sacrament of First Holy Communion and their families; that they may always walk in the light of Christ and feel comfort in His constant love for them. We extend our prayers to our Confirmation

candidates who have and who will heed the call to the wonders of the Holy Spirit. May our Grade 7 students, called to the Sacrament of Confirmation, and their families and sponsors, always be

blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit as they continue on their faith journey, to love and serve others in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Yours Sincerely, Anita ArpaiaPrincipal

WE CELEBRATE MARY DURING THE MONTH OF MAYMary is the Mother of the Church and she continues to exercise her maternal role on our behalf. Mary is an example of one who hears the word of God and responds to it wholeheartedly. Our

students have prayed the rosary all year in Mary’s honour and on Monday, May 24th, 2018, our community will participate in the Crowning of Mary. We extend our sincere thanks to our Rosary team for their dedication and commitment to the St. Elizabeth Seton community this year. Thank you to the volunteers for sharing the love of the Rosary with us! We say goodbye to Gloria Ann

Monica Lobo who was a member of our Rosary committee for many years at St. Elizabeth Seton. She passed away in India while attending her mother’s 100th Birthday celebration. She was 75 years

old.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

MAY 5th – May 10th, 2019

Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. Our school community will celebrate Catholic Education Week 2019 in ways that are appropriate to our students’ age. We invite you to participate in one or other of these activities as your personal time and work schedule may permit.

There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic Education Week:

Day 1: Rooted in PrayerDay 2: Living in CommunityDay 3: Doing Justice and Creating HopeDay 4: Journeying Together in FaithDay 5: Sharing the Good News

We hope to see many of you during our school celebrations. We will be hosting a Mass at St. Elizabeth Seton on May 30th at 1 p.m. Welcome to Kindergarten will also take place this month on May 21st at 6:00 P.M.

We thank you for choosing Catholic Education.

EQAO (GR. 3 & 6) MAY 27th to June 3rd, 2019

The Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) assessments have been scheduled for the week beginning May 23rd to June 4th, 2018. Student results on EQAO assessments serve as important sources of information about student strengths and areas requiring improvement. As a school community, the staff utilizes the information to guide school improvement initiatives for reading, writing and mathematics. The results are also utilized by the TCDSB and the Ministry of Education to direct attention and resources where they are needed. For more information about EQAO and to view a sample of its assessments, you may visit the Web site at www.eqao.com.***It is important for your child to be well rested and nourished during the assessment period. To maintain continuity of instruction and participation in the EQAO, we respectfully request that you refrain from booking appointments or vacation during this time. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office.

Opportunities for Students

Connecting Students with Campus Ministry It’s that time of year when Grade 12 students are finalizing which university or college they will attend in September. To assist them and their families in making choices that include a supportive Catholic community, Chaplaincy Connect is a tool to personally connect students with campus ministries across Canada in a way that is intentional, invitational and informative. Students and chaplaincy leaders have reported high rates of retention and involvement resulting from these connections. Please help spread the word to students or their families! To connect with the Campus Ministry at their chosen institution, students simply enter their contact information in the Google form. Someone from the Campus Ministry staff will be happy to get in touch with them. For more information or to receive Chaplaincy Connect cards, email Eliza Trotter, Diocesan Coordinator of Campus Ministries at [email protected].

EQAO's 2019-2020 Student Advisory Committee--Call for ApplicationsThe call for application for the 2019–2020 EQAO Student Advisory Committee is open until May 10th. This committee will be one of our key sources for student voice in the agency’s activities. We also meet with student trustees, and staff engage student focus groups from time to time. This will be the second year of the Student Advisory Committee. The other committees within our governance structure are the EQAO Advisory Committee, the Modernization in Measurement Advisory Panel and the Equity Council.

They seek students who demonstrate a passion for effecting change in their communities and who have a desire to make a difference—either through their actions or through their ideas.

To learn more about the previous committee’s work, visit EQAO’s website.
