STEP 5

Admitted to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of ourwrongs.

THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

After completing a detailed Step 4 we now have an exhaustive list of ourwrongdoings so it would appear to be an easy transition to Step 5 where we mustengage in “Full Disclosure” with another human being. That is when it allbecomes real. Sharing it with another may bring back the pain, guilt, and shameof our actions. Actually, that’s a good thing. It is necessary for any pain thatlingers to be felt, discussed and transmuted. (Old program adage: Uncover, discover, discard). Sharing it with another will help relinquish a lot of the painthat we have unnecessarily held onto that has held us back in so many areas ofour lives. The guilt and shame that is attached to most of our actions still needsto be resolved. I learned a while ago the difference between the two. Guilt: I didsomething bad. Shame: I am bad. As far as guilt goes there are tools in the stepsto help rectify our wrongs- by making amends. In order to truly advance in ourrecovery, we must take responsibility in this way. As for the shame, it’s somethingthat can be worked through over time as we continue to take the right action andbe of service to others.

Now by the time we have reached this step many of our “wrongs” we mayhave been discussed in meetings, written down, shared with a sponsor or a fewfellows, but that isn’t sufficient. However, many of us have issues that are notappropriate to share at a group level, and that is why it is vital to find the rightperson with whom to share it. It must be someone that we respect and trust. Mostof the time it is our sponsor, but sometimes it can be a close friend in or out ofthe program or someone in our spiritual or religious community. If you are havingdifficulty with the trust issue, it might be a good idea to revisit Step 3 and ask foryour Higher Power’s assistance.

During the sharing process, being completely honest, relief will come, usuallyimmediately, because we will recognize that we all share common humanity. It’sa great feeling to when we get to a place where someone truly knows us, and allthe terrible things we have done, yet still accepts us. When that happens we canbegin the process of truly forgiving ourselves and eliminate the shame. Thisshame we have felt has been holding many of us back throughout our lives.

In discussing Step 5, it is vital that we discuss “the exact nature of our wrongs”and all the feelings, thoughts and beliefs that become evident. We need to discussthe consequences and how we felt about them. Some of the defects may includejealousy, control, impatience,  etc. If we understand the root causes of thesedefects we can begin to forgive ourselves and commit to making changes and not

Page 6: May 2019 - Gamblers Anonymous 2019 final.pdf · becomes real. Sharing it with another may bring back the pain, guilt, and shame of our actions. Actually, thatRs a good thing. It is

repeating the behavior. Although many of our actions may have been justified, even to this day, but clinging to the justification serves no purpose. By sharing itwith another, it allows us to view it with a different perspective. If we ask forfeedback, we may recognize in some cases that our part in it was to hang on waytoo long. It may have made us feel like a victim and inhibited us from living thehealthy and joyous lives we were meant to have.

Trust is a big issue for most addicts and gamblers. Many of us have been letdown by others in our lives and as a result, we continued that behavior andbecame untrustworthy ourselves. Regaining trust is a gradual process and Step 5is the starting point. By opening up and sharing some of our deepest and darkestsecrets we allow ourselves to become vulnerable. As we do so, we continue withthe healing and are on our way to true connection with ourselves, others and ourHigher Power.

The additional advantage of sharing this with another person after completingthe 4th step is that during the discussion other experiences may come to surfacethat you may have completely forgotten about or have hidden deeply.  There isno harm in doing an addendum to your Step 4. As you complete this step it willbe useful to complete a list of your shortcomings while they are fresh in yourmind, to prepare you for Steps 6 and 7.

Step 5 can be very freeing. I have done many “Step 5’s” in my years ofrecovery and in workshops; sometimes with a fellow G.A. member and manyother times with a sponsor. I have always felt tremendous relief upon completion.I always received total acceptance and love and never felt any judgment, shockor surprise. As a matter of fact, in many cases, it helped the other person open upand share some issues that they hadn’t dealt with or remembered themselves. Theentire experience has motivated me to continue on my journey through the rest ofthe steps. Yes, we are certain to feel a whole wide range of emotions.Nonetheless, we now have all the tools and support we need to deal with theminstead of avoiding them like many of us have done throughout our lives.

GROUP NEWS

Dear Karen and I.S.O.,

Firstly, thank you all for your continuing efforts in support of G.A.

Enclosed is a bank draft and our literature order for the Beginners Group inEdmonton, Alberta, Canada. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to employ a portionof our group funds that we received last summer to order and keep a supply ofG.A. literature in a locker at our meeting place, so that other groups in our Areacan make purchases and have literature available for their members.

Page 7: May 2019 - Gamblers Anonymous 2019 final.pdf · becomes real. Sharing it with another may bring back the pain, guilt, and shame of our actions. Actually, thatRs a good thing. It is

It seems that some groups are beginning to appreciate have the ability toacquire G.A. literature on short notice and without shipping charges.

The program is in the literature and the fellowship is in the rooms. There is adifference between the two and we feel that the literature carries the message inaddition to the experience, strength and hope in the rooms. It is important to getthe newcomer into the literature and most importantly, doing what it says.

May a power greater than each of us guide us all in our recovery endeavors.

Gratefully, Warren S., Edmonton, Alberta

Hi. I.S.O. (Karen),

Enclosed is a one-time donation from the Saturday Gladstone, Oregonmeeting. Sadly we have closed the meeting.

A member sent us this letter and we thought it “said it best”. We did get theauthors permission if you would like to share it in the Bulletin.

Thank you,

Pam B., Canby, Oregon

Dear G.A. Saturday Gladstone Meeting,

I am writing this because I am not able to be at the Saturday GladstoneMeeting as it officially closes after more than a decade of service to compulsivegamblers. I do not know what would have happened to me had this meeting notexisted when I first walked through its doors in March 2008. I wasn’t ready toadmit my powerlessness over the disease of compulsive gambling at that time andI struggled to define each of the 20 Questions in a specific way so that I couldbelieve I really didn’t belong.

The truth is that I am a compulsive gambler and I have found a way to abstainfrom my addiction through the Recovery Program, meetings and people likethose I found in Gladstone that day. I left the meeting and gambled, but Iremembered being told to come back; and I did. Over and over until I couldfinally string more than 30 days, more than 60 days, more than 90 days andfinally a full year together without gambling.

Some of the people in that meeting are no longer with us. I will foreverremember Vic S., Bob F. and Larry R. because they played a big role in mysurvival, which I’m blessed today to call my Recovery. Two of my closest friends

in all time (Sue G. and Terri W.) came from the Gladstone meeting and bondedwith me as we shared our brokenness with one another with brutal honesty. Otherfriends from this meeting are still in my life and though I don’t see them often Istill cross their paths in the program and call them dear friends as they remain inmy heart as those who honored me by listening and loving me until I found a wayto love myself: Helen, Kevin, Judy, Richard, Don, Dan, Jim, Lynda, Jessie, Rose,Sandy, Connie, Clara, Dale, Pam, John O., Curt , Sharon, and countless otherswho walked beside me through the years and help me up when Walt died and keptme true to the commitment I made in that Gladstone meeting to not gamble today.

I will miss the room where I celebrated birthdays and told my story at aspeaker meeting for the first time. I am so grateful to St. Stevens for allowing ourprogram to use its facilities for so many years. I am sad to see this meeting close, but one of the things I have learned over these years is that the Program is carriedby the people who work it and wherever one or two of us meets and hold the dooropen, recovery is possible.

Gladstone’s time is past now but not without having changes countless lives.Special thanks and love to Kevin and Helen who faithfully kept this meetinggoing for all of these years. Your gifts of time and commitment changed my life.

Lovingly, Vicki, Gladstone, Oregon

Note From I.S.O.: I was also sad to hear about the closing of the Gladstonemeeting. Pam, thank you for forwarding Vicki’s letter and Vicki, thank you for soeloquently sharing your remembrances over the last 11 years. Please let us knowif we can be of any assistance if you start another meeting in the area.

Hi Karen,

Please find enclosed a bank draft for my annual Lifeliner donation.

I owe my recovery to G.A. After 20 years of irresponsible gambling I attendedmy first G.A. meeting on February 21, 2013. I walked into that meeting broken, despondent and confused. I was warmly greeted by the group and those strangersshared their stories that night and I left that meeting with something gambling hadnever given me, a hope for a better future. Some of those strangers soon becamegood friends.

My recovery was not seamless and I had a few slips along the way, but on May21st I will celebrate 4 years clean. I owe this to my home group, the ThursdayBeginners meeting, my sponsor, Warren S. and G.A. I still attend the meetings

faithfully and now I share my story with strangers in the hopes that, perhaps, itmay help a newcomer, someone coming back after a slip, or the compulsivegambler who still suffers find their own ray of hope.

Yours truly, Bruce M., Edmonton, Alberta
