Job specific training methods of the week covered cleaning on classrooms,

computer rooms, chalkboards/whiteboards, and labs. Supervisors trained

Driving Performance Grounds

Commencement is one of the highlight days for the Grounds Department. We work all winter and

spring to have campus looking its very best for everyone on this special day for many of our stu-

dent body. One of the big changes the department made for campus this year was the raise the

mowing height from 3.5” to 4” on all lawn areas. This change was brought on by helping to im-

prove the health of the turf around campus, help to choke out the weeds in the lawn areas, and

provide a dense thick lush green lawn year round for the university. By raising the height of cut

(HOC) the department believe we can help the cool season grass stay healthier during the hot dry

summers of South Central Kentucky, keeping the warm season Bermuda grass from encroaching

and taking over.

One of the other major renovation the department undertook during May was the renovation of

the Round-A-Bout on campus. The Round-A-Bout is the main entrance into campus and many resi-

dence of Bowling Green drive past it every day as well. The area was in need of a “makeover”, the

landscape bed area in the main center island was excavated down 8” to remove the clay soil during

construction. New top soil was brought in and leveled. All existing vegetation was removed during

the excavation process and a new landscape design was developed and installed. The second part

was a landscape lighting upgrade for the area. New LED landscape lights were installed to help illu-

minate “The Spirit Makes the Master” signs on the east and west side of the circle along with new

accent lights for the sweet gum trees.
