Dear Fellow Owners,Our first major outdoor event of 2018, the Hot Hearts - Dress to Impress street party, will take place on Friday, 18th May, to celebrate the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This will be a family event for all Owners starting at 7.00 for 7.30pm,

with music provided by Owners Geoff Betts, Pat Toye, Mel Leatherbarrow and Anne Marie Barth. Please come along, support the Clubhouse and have a great day.

Simon Weston visited the Clubhouse last month and as always it was good to see him. A really lovely modest man and a good supporter of Owners at La Manga Club.

Later in this newsletter there is an article on the refurbishment of the library, a challenge which your committee were a little nervous about, but which I?m delighted to report has been very well received.

Similarly, a new dining room art display is always interesting and always provokes many comments, thankfully, mainly positive. Nonetheless, when Gill Schofield (and her assistant Peter Morrow) come to me with their latest idea, I must confess I often say, ?You

want to do what?? However, they always pull it off and I?m sure their next display, which will go up shortly, will be no different.

Tai Chi is another activity, which is outside my experience, so no one was more surprised than me when I heard that some 40 people had attended Clive Whittaker?s lecture and taster session. However, it just serves to underline the need to keep an open mind and that we are constantly working to provide Owners with a real choice of activities, events and entertainment. Where else at the resort can Owners choose from such a wide variety of leisure options under one roof?

Friends of the Clubhouse features Neil and Maria Hayes - Yapp who live next to the North Course and who have been coming to the Owners Clubhouse, since they first discovered it twenty years ago. As with so many long-standing ?friends?, it is the warm, family welcome they receive that counts. It really does underline that it is people that make the difference, and this is what makes the Owners Clubhouse, and the resort generally so special.

Best wishes,

Stewart HarrisChairman, Owners Clubhouse

Simon Weston CBE, the well known Falklands war veteran and charity campaigner, made a welcome return visit to the Owners Clubhouse on Friday, 20th April.

The purpose of the evening was for Simon to

meet Owners and to sign copies of Moving On, his best-selling book published in 2003 which lays his Falklands? ghosts to rest. The session was very informal,

with Simon sitting by the fireplace in the lounge bar and welcoming anyone who wanted to talk.

For someone who is so well known, it was lovely to see how genuinely delighted he was when people

approached asking for him to sign copies of his book and exchange a few words. Indeed there was soon a queue and people waited patiently for their turn to chat.

Simon remained engaged and friendly throughout the session. Not easy when questions were often very similar. It was interesting to see young people hanging on to his every word and clearly delighted to meet him. This is all the more so given they were not even born in 1982 when Simon suffered his terrible injuries , when his ship Sir Galahad was destroyed during The Falklands conflict at Bluff Cove.

La Manga Club Owners include many achievers from different walks of life and are not easily impressed by celebrity. Therefore to see them queuing to talk to Simon and afterwards hear them make comments like, ?An unrepeatable experience? and, ?Privileged to be in the right place at the right time? shows what a special evening it was.

Our thanks go to Simon and Lucy, his lovely wife for their time, and to Hugh James (whose father was captain of Sir Galahad) for helping Gill Schofield organise the evening.

When the Clubhouse committee decided to refurbish

the library they did so with a degree of trepidation,

knowing that many people don?t like change,

particularly when it involves something so familiar

and well-liked. Would Owners like the changes?

Would there be arguments over allocation of space?

Would people accept the mail facility moving to the

General Community offices in Las Sabinas?

Work did not get off to a good start, as the noise

caused by ripping out the old shelves and cupboards

was not to everyone liking. However, once this phase

of work was completed and things quietened down,

the mood switched to people being curious about

what was being done.

Improved lighting was installed and the notice boards

extended to provide some 40% extra space for

activity organisers to post information. Book shelves

followed and cupboards were allocated to the bridge

and art class organisers, amongst others, and even

the committee got its own much needed space.

There is still some work to do; the fitt ing of a shelf

under the notice boards for pencils and pins to sit on,

headings for the various sections to be updated, the

door frame to be painted white and a new floor to be

laid. These will be finished shortly.

By the way may we ask yet again that only new, clean

books and film DVD?s are left. All other items, games,

old books, magazines, etc, should be put in the

General Community skips, which are located behind

the Clubhouse and open from 11.00am to 12.00

noon every day.

Of course, the proof as to whether, or not, the

changes were worth making rests with Owners.

These are some of the comments that have come in

on the Clubhouse Facebook page >

www.facebook.com/lamangaclubhouse/

Linda Ashenden: Looks great , June Peter: It?s looking fab. Well done all, Ian Hunt: Great job, Linda Pealing: That looks so much better, Margaret Woodward: Very smart, Lyn Robertson: Great refurbishment and Rani Hesketh: Looking good.

REFURBISHED CLUBHOUSE LIBRARY

Page 5: May, 2018, Clubhouse NewsletterX(1)A(v1...Schofield (and her assistant Peter Morrow) come to me with their latest idea, I must confess I often say, ?You want to do what?? However,

Two years ago it was decided to refresh the somewhat tired wall art in the dining room. As with the library refurbishment, this represented ?change' of a well-loved space and consequently a step into the unknown!

The first display was provided by Owner and artist Jack Scott, whose brightly coloured abstract paintings predictably polarised opinions. Some Owners loved them, others chose to sit with their backs to them! All to be expected, as they were very radical compared to the bland artworks that had gone before. Nonetheless, over time people got used to them and when some months

later we removed them to install the next display, we actually got complaints!

The second display, comprising artworks provided by Bridgette Field,

Owner photographer extraordinaire, which because they were representational (lifelike) in style, meant that the committee was on safer ground. No less impactful and beautiful, they included photographs of townscapes and architectural features in and around the historic sea port city of Cartagena. One even showed the very street and bar where Joaquin, the Clubhouse steward, met his wife for the very first time!

COMING SOON - NEW DINING ROOM ART DISPLAY

Page 6: May, 2018, Clubhouse NewsletterX(1)A(v1...Schofield (and her assistant Peter Morrow) come to me with their latest idea, I must confess I often say, ?You want to do what?? However,

The third display was provided by Javier Navarro from Gallery Home and the paintings were a cross between abstract and representational. The underlying theme was trees and their foliage. What was different was the way these elements had been abstracted, but not to the point where they were unrecognisable as with Jack Scott?s work

At the moment the dining room walls are unadorned by art of any kind, as they needed holes filled, marks removed and a fresh new coat of white paint applied in anticipation of the next display, which will be installed this Friday, 11th May.

Once again provided by Javier Navarro, (top right) the owner of Gallery Home, the display that will be hung will combine abstract and representational elements, the mirror to the right being an example. We promise it will be fun, beautiful and something very different, but most importantly of all it will make the Clubhouse dining room a vibrant and great place to eat. Please give it time, get used to it and enjoy atmosphere it creates.

As mentioned in Stewart Harris?s opening message, it is genuinely difficult to please everyone all of the time. This is not least because some people are naturally more conservative, whilst others are more radical. Striking a balance is always the challenge.

Which these points in mind, when the idea of staging a Tai Chi session was first mooted the committee?s biggest concern was that only a few die hards would turn up. We couldn?t have been more wrong! On Monday, 30th April some 40 Owners gathered in the activity room at the Clubhouse to hear Tai Chi practitioner Clive Whittaker?s opening lecture.

Clive, a Tai Chi practitioner for twenty five years, shared some of the history and principles that combine to

inspire Tai Chi. He explained that it is a therapeutic system of exercises devised by the Chinese for health and also martial arts purposes, and that in the West it is primarily performed for its health benefits.

Exercises comprise a simple set of linked or individual movements that can be graceful and relaxing, and which involve the whole body. They aim to improve posture, balance, breathing ,

stability and well-being, and are mostly performed standing.

Clive then explained that the Tai Chi origin myth recounts the story of a monk called Chang San Feng, who lived in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368 -1644, the fourteenth century). Feng saw a snake and a crane fighting. As the crane pranced, the snake coiled and attacked. However, the crane defended itself from the attack by advancing and retreating in a series of co-ordinated movements. The monk took those moves and translated them into the body movements that we see in modern Tai Chi.

Moving to the children?s playground Clive demonstrated various Tai Chi moves and then led the group through some simple exercises. People were intrigued how something that Clive made look so easy, was in practice much more difficult. However, by the end of the session most had grasped the basic moves and were enjoying themselves. Indeed, afterwards several Owners approached organiser Gill Schofield and asked if the event would be repeated. Watch this space!

When and how did you first discover La Manga Club?

It was in 1998, when we rented a villa in Las Higueras. We?d never been to the resort before, but we liked it so much the following year we bought a timeshare at the Peninsular Club in Las Lomas.

What community do you live in and why?

We now have a villa at El Coto del Golf. It has front-line golf views and we love the tranquil location. We also have great neighbours, plus there?s good sense of community too, which is important!

When did you first visit the Owners Clubhouse?

In 1999, we started to go for lunch after a morning at La Cala beach and then decided to try dinner in the evening. We have continued doing so for nearly two decades!

What were your first impressions?

It was very friendly and welcoming. We particularly appreciated the generous drink servings!

Do you prefer to eat inside, or outside?

Always outside, under the pine trees at lunchtime and dining under the stars at night.

What is your favourite meal and why?

It has to be dinner, there?s always a great choice, and the quality of food is excellent, not forgetting the friendly (and often entertaining!) service from Joaquin and his team.

What is your favourite drink?

It has to be the Cuba Libre (rum and coke). The Owners? Club House also does one of the best gin & tonics in the world. Fact.

Who are your favourite members of staff?

That's an unfair question!! They are ALL lovely!!!

What is the best social function you?ve ever attended?

We haven?t attended any of the functions, as we normally go as a couple, or with friends for dinner

What is your fondest memory of Clubhouse?

Every first visit after we have been away for a while ? we are always treated like family.

From Cristiano Ronaldo to Andy Murray, Serena Williams to Jessica Ennis-Hill, professional sportsmen and women use coaches to help them maintain and fine-tune their skills. Yet so many amateurs ignore the obvious conclusion, if pros need coaches to help them, then ordinary folk also do. Arguably this is even more so, as they don?t have the talent and god-given skills of the professionals.

Nowhere is this more true than golf, especially as it?s a more difficult sport than most to play, with its many variables, such as courses, conditions, competitors, equipment, the elements, course management and psychology all impacting on performance. Add to this that your main competition is yourself, because of your unique mix of physiology, natural ability and mental capacity, and it seems obvious that coaching is an absolute must.

Despite this many amateurs think that buying the latest and most expensive clubs, spending unsupervised time on a driving range, playing more often and picking up a few tips from their mates in the bar, will turn them into the next Sevvy, or Tiger overnight. Predictably, it rarely does and instead they soldier on with little improvement at best or, at worst, their expensive clubs gather dust.

This is why lessons are not just a fad, they are essential for all amateur golfers of all genders, standards and ages, if they want to perfect their game. Coaching will:-

> Teach you how to approach the game, to appreciate the importance of club selection, how to grip different clubs and how to address the ball, etc, etc. Don?t learn these from the outset and you will never maximise your potential, or play good golf.

> More than virtually any other sport it is impossible to see what you?re doing right and wrong. Therefore, coaches and their ability to assess your game from ?the outside in? solves this problem. They understand the importance of body positioning, the mechanics of a good swing, and every other aspect of replicating it, time after time. They will quickly spot a problem in your swing and offer advice on how to correct it, so that you consistently produce great shots.

> Stop you trying to self-analyse and do the wrong things better. Getting a set of more expensive clubs may improve your game slightly, but they?re not going to correct a fundamentally bad grip. Practicing and playing more often may also help, but it won?t correct a bad grip, and so on and so on. Coaching will address your faults and enable you to change for the better.

> Help you understand that quick fixes, or new clubs, are

not the answer and instead that the only way you will improve your game is to make an investment in yourself, and in learning to play better golf.

> Enable you to maximise and enjoy your time playing golf, because professional coaching is the fastest way to help you learn, or improve your game and hence allow you to enjoy your precious time on the course.

There are great professional coaches all over the world, but when visiting Spain?s Costa Cálida, why not take the opportunity to try out the magnificent golf facilities at La Manga Club, which include one of the best Golf Practice Centres in Europe and also the Club?s new Golf Academy: La Manga Club Golf Training Centre, which has a new system of teaching under the direction the renowned instructor Thomas Johansson.
