This spring term, your relentless library personnel participated in several initiatives to enhance student success and customer services at SC State. Through partnerships with colleagues, friends, and other stakeholders within and outside of the university, we were able to offer new discipline-related resources (e.g., Nature A rchives); sponsor National Library Week with book discussions, workshops, etc.; collaborate with Student Success and Retention Programs in presenting at the Learning to Learn Workshops; collaborate with Center for Teaching and Learning & Extended Services (CTLES) in developing an Online Library Orientation Module (ongoing). Given the above, there is still much work to be done, primarily, to increase the response rate for the librarys survey. During March 2018, we launched the LibQual Survey, a nationally standardized library survey based on the ServQual marketing survey. LibQual is intended to obtain customersperceptions about their minimum, desired, and perceived actual levels of service quality. Based on the findings, we want to make improvements. Thus, we want to know what you think! Hopefully, by now you have completed the survey, and if not, please do so at your earliest convenience. We wish everyone well in closing out the semester. We congratulate students who are graduating and all faculty and staff on their accomplishments! Have an enjoyable summer! Ruth A. Hodges, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Library and Information Services

Miller F. Whittaker Library Celebrates National Library Week

By Cathi Cooper Mack and Ruth Hodges

The Miller F. Whittaker Library celebrated the 60th anniversary of National Library Week on April 9-13, 2018. Celebrating the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians, this annual event promoted

library use and support through the theme “Libraries Lead.” Book discussions and signing, workshops, and SC State University author displays highlighted key events of the week.

Book discussions included W. Lewis Burke, All for Civil Rights: African American Lawyers in South

Carolina, 1868-1968 and Mr. Cecil Williams, Unforgettable: All the Memories We Left Behind. Finding

scholarship and related financial information and genealogy workshops were presented by Doris E.

Felder/Monica Boyd and Giselle L. White-Perry, respectively. Contin. National Library Week, p. 5.

Work-Study Students Participate in Summer Programs By Barbara H. Gilliard and Cathi Cooper Mack

Two SC State students working in the Circulation Department of the Miller F. Whittaker Library, Mikayla Johnson and Shaneika Keyatta Mixson, were selected to participate in summer programs. Mikayla will participate in the South Carolina Cancer Health Equity Consortium (SC CHEC), a 10-week program that will begin on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 and conclude on Friday, August 3, 2018. The program will give her hands-on opportunity to conduct research in the laboratories/office space of well-renowned cancer researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). We congratulated Mikayla and wish her much success.

Shaneika Keyatta Mixson will participate in the Walton UNCF K-12 Education Fellowship program in Washington, DC from May 29, 2018 – August 1, 2018. EdFuel is sponsoring the program. It is a national non-profit organization that helps educational institutions recruit and retain top talents at all levels. This leadership program selects high achieving African Americans engaged in education reform in America. Shaneika is really looking forward to working with EdFuel. The Miller F. Whittaker Library salutes Shaneika Mixson and Mikayla Johnson for their achievements!
