May 2017 yardof the Month
to these businesses for sponsoring the 2017 yard of the month contest. We look forward to finding out who the June and July winners will be!
Thank you
five decades of yard careThe house at the corner of Eighth and C streets, built in 1880,
has overlooked many different plantings by its inhabitants.
Gary and Nancy Riha have been responsible for the last 49 years. It provides a spacious buffer from the nearby streets.
Asked about the green thumb philosophy, Nancy said that early on,Gary might have been trying to impress Nancy’s dad, who was
“very persnickety” about his lawn. Gary may be even more particularthan her father, it turned out.
Five decades ago the couple removed five elms, leaving a blank slate.Nancy’s journal documented the changes over time. One thing thathasn’t changed is the grape arbor, the Rihas’ favorite spot to relax.
Previous owners gave the Rihas photos of the property that dated backto 1902. A 1942 photo showed the arbor with the very same grape vinecovering it. The supporting structure has been replaced over the years,
but the vines are “one of the family.”
“Good Lord willing, it will still be here when we’re gone,” Nancy said.“We don’t see our yard work as ‘work.’ It is a hobby that we both enjoy
together, and if others enjoy it too all the better,” she said.
The Rihas are the May winners of the Yard of the Month Contest.
They will receive $100 in coupons that can be redeemed at the sponsorsof the contest. Thanks Gary and Nancy, for brightening your corner of
the community.
