Message from Administration Aloha CKMS Ohana:
Another year is almost in the books. This will be our closing newsletter
for the 2016-2017 school year. We thank all of you for your support of
Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and your child’s education. Together
we can make a difference in the life of every child that comes through the
doors of CKMS.
We congratulate our 8th grade students who are moving on to High
School and wish you a bright future. We look forward to seeing you all
graduate in four years college and career ready.
Information regarding supply lists, our back to school packet pick up and
fee payment schedule will be posted on our school website in early June
(www.ckms.k12.hi.us)
It is our hope that in the coming months you take some time to relax and
enjoy your families. Have a great summer and be safe.

CKMS Spring
Band Concert
And Events Come and enjoy the CKMS Spring Concert on
May 10th starting at 7 pm at the Kauai War Memorial
Convention Hall.
Thank you to all who came to our concert at Kukui
Grove to watch our joint concert with the Stevenson
Middle School Band. The concert was completely stu-
dent led, each piece was introduced by a student and
conducted by a student. The band entertained the crowd
to favorites like "Uptown Funk," "The Phantom of the
Opera," and "Jurassic Park." The band members were
each assigned a pen pal at the beginning of the semester
and have been writing letters to each other to help build
relationships even before they arrived here on Kauai.
The Saturday evening, we brought the students together
for a social. It was great to see them interacting and
making new friends. Music is definitely something that
brings people together and builds lasting friendships!

Special Olympics Track and
Field Meet Results Please help me in congratulating Joshua, An-
son, Kaylynn, Molly, Marissa, Sabrina and Kay-
lah! They, along with one of our former students
Roberto, participated in the Kauai Special Olym-
pics Track meet on Saturday. Each of them par-
ticipated in the 4x100 unified relay, earning 1st
and 2nd places. Joshua, Kaylynn, Molly and
Kaylah earned 1st in the 4x400 m unified relay
against CKMS Team Unify alumni (now Kauai
High School students). Joshua, Kaylynn, Anson
and Roberto also competed in individual events
including the 200 m run, softball throw, running
long jump, standing long jump and shot put.
They earned 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each of
those events. (Joshua threw the shot put 8.75 m,
a personal record, earning him 2nd place against
one of our adult athletes.) However, the ribbons
they earned were not the highlights of the events.
Each of our CKMS Team Unify athletes and
partners truly exemplified unity, dignity, honor,
respect and acceptance of all through their
sportsmanship, smiles, cheers, and dedication
they exhibited on and off the track.
CONGRATULATIONS CKMS Team Unify!
We are now preparing for our State Summer
Games at UH Manoa, being held June 2-4.
Thank you all who came out to support our ath-
letes and unified partners, and those who have
helped with our fundraisers.
Thank you to our CKMS Jazz Band who per-
formed during the events giving the athletes and
unified partners an extra boost!
And thank you to the weather...It was on our
side. The rain did not begin to pour until after
the events. :)
CKMS Chorus Concerts Please join us for the year end Chorus
Concert on May 16th at 6 pm in the
Ha’upu Courtyard.

Aloha Ric Cox Ric Cox was 72 years old and passed away due to cardiac arrest on
April 13th. Ric was known by all public school educators as the face of
Aloha Angels, which he started as a subsidiary of the Rotary Club. The
sole purpose of the Aloha Angels is raising funds for elementary school
public education, specifically to support teachers—providing extra funds so
they could enhance their classrooms. Recently, the Aloha Angels increased
their scope to include CKMS Clubs. CKMS received $5,000 this year to
help support the clubs on campus. Ric Cox will be missed!

Acceptance Week Celebration
CKMS celebrated Acceptance Week! (4/10-4/13). CKMS Team Unify students worked hard in planning various ac-tivities, such as Kind Word Chain Links (circling the Band Building) and the Kindness Comment Rainbow, to help spread understanding, acceptance, respect and tolerance for all. There were several Advisory contests as well as recess activi-ties. Thank you all for your help and support in spreading acceptance. Together we can be "game changers". Check out this video to learn more about us being a Unified Champion School.

Family Camp—Hospice Hawaii June 9 – 11, 2017
Applications Due: May 11, 2017
WHAT IS FAMILY CAMP?
Hospice Hawaii’s annual Family Camp is for children and
teens (7-17) and adults who have experienced the death of a
loved one. In a safe and supportive environment, families ex-
plore their loss, and are able to connect with others to learn that
they are not alone in their grief. Families are given the oppor-
tunity to heal and remember their loved ones through various
activities. The camp’s name Ka Pilina Pulama was given to
honor our island heritage. It signifies that we are connected to
the land, the heavens, and each other. This sustains and holds
us through the darkest nights.
Please call 791-8093 or
email [email protected] for more information.
