LEHIGH VALLEY IIA CHAPTER NEWSLETTER May 2017
1
President’s Message
Hello Members,
Welcome to May and International Internal Audit Awareness month. Contained
in this month’s newsletter are some ideas on promoting the profession within
your organizations. Please share with me any activities your Audit Group may
be hosting this month in honor of Internal Audit awareness. We will publish
your activities in our next newsletter.
In April we had two joint events with the ACFE. The Student Award Night and
the Schemes and Scams fraud training, both hosted by DeSales. Thanks to John
Falk for coordinating the fraud training. In addition, we had ACL training and the
ACL Users Group meeting the first week in April which was hosted by Air
Products. Many thanks to James Mahoney, Doreen Wynn and Tony Sabino for
making ACL week a big success for the chapter. We could not have these great
events without the support of our members and the leading companies and
institutions throughout the Lehigh Valley.
The chapter year is winding down and I would like to personally thank all of the
Officers, Board Members, and Committee Chairs for all of their support
throughout the year. We had many successful events this year, which were
coordinated by many. Behind the scenes we implemented the new Event
Management Tool to automate the registration and administration of our
events, finalized our Treasurer’s Manual and our Record Retention Policy. I also
had the opportunity to meet some of our newest members at our events and I
look forward to seeing all of you at future events.
I am grateful to have been a part of the Lehigh Valley Chapter’s Leadership Team
this past year. We are fortunate to have Sarah Trumbauer as our incoming
President and I know she will receive the same amount of support from all of
the Leadership Team and Chapter Members in 2017/2018.

If payment is not made by this time, then “stand-by” registrants will replace unpaid registrants as attendees. DeSales University, Center Valley, PA
Lehigh Valley IIA/ACFE Lehigh Valley
Fraud & the Financial Professional
Matthew X. Ryan, CPA, CFE, MBA
Overview: Fraud and fraud‐related schemes have
cost U.S. and international businesses and non‐
profits billions of dollars, and often have caused
small companies to declare bankruptcy. While larger
fraud schemes are typically uncovered during
periods of economic recession, the role of CPA and
accounting staff in helping to detect and prevent
fraud throughout the business cycle has never been
greater. This course will analyze some of the more
common fraud schemes utilizing real‐world
examples. In addition, the course will examine key
techniques to mitigate the risk of fraud in your
business.
Ethics: Critical Thinking, Case Studies, and Fraud
Francis X. Ryan, CPA, CGMA, MBA
Matthew X. Ryan, CPA, CFE, MBA
Overview: While ethics training is required by many states,
the true value of the CPA license is in understanding how
critically important ethical behavior is to one another, our
customers, and to the public. This course will explore the
basic tenants of ethical behavior and use case studies to
explore ethical dilemmas in various companies and
organizations.

CHAPTER NEWS
May Is International Internal Audit Awareness Month!
As an internal audit professional, you play an important role in raising awareness and elevating the
profession. Whether you are an active IIA member or new to internal auditing, there’s something you
can do to raise awareness.
For example, you can customize your email signature and social
media accounts with the International Internal Audit Awareness
Month digital icon (depicted at right). You can hold a lunch‐and‐
learn in your workplace to dispel myths about internal auditing and
explain the value that a well‐resourced, independent internal audit
function can provide. You can also distribute sweet treats or tokens
to coworkers with an educational flier about the profession.
Don’t let the opportunity pass to advocate the importance of internal auditing to your coworkers and
other stakeholders. For additional ideas, sample programs, tips, and templates, download the free
Building Awareness Toolkit from The IIA’s website.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS The Lehigh Valley Chapter of the IIA is still seeking
volunteers to fill the Treasurers position for the next
chapter year (June 2017 to May 2018). The Treasure is
responsible for the cash receipts, cash disbursements and
quarterly reporting to the Board for the chapter. We are
also seeking a webmaster for our webpage. The
webmaster is responsible for updating the webpage as
requested by the Officers and the Communications Chair.
The current members in these roles are willing to train the
incoming volunteers. Please contact Marianne Marks if
you are interested in volunteering or would like more
information on these roles.
