Thanks go out to all the students who applied. They are all most deserving.

Well, the first two months have been busy and exciting for me and the council. We’ve made some changes on our own and others by a vote from the assembly. With a new board come different concepts and objectives. Our goals continue to be for the advancement of our lodge.

Nancy Gregory and Joe Cirencione organized the 9th Annual Lodge Awards Dinner and Presen-tations. Together with a committee of assistants they sold tickets, collected money, purchased trophies, set up, decorated and presided over the occasion. I’m so indebted to them for all they’ve done and continue to do.

Behind the scenes we have a kitchen staff led by Tony DiCostanzo. He coordinates with the organizers and the bar manager Deb Rivera in order for everything to flow smoothly. Tony is also responsible for combining all the ads and creating the program. Ken, Barb and Tom, our office staff worked diligently managing the finan-cial end of the affair and are preparing the final report. A tremendous amount of planning went into this wonderful night.

We honored seven deserving recipients. They’re Father Thomas Mull, Sam Cosentino, Sandy Schading, Mary Jane Melito, Sully Ciancaglini and posthumously Kay Perry and Dominick Davoli. Thank you for commitment to our beloved organization.

From The President’s Desk

Friday night dinners have ended successfully due to the efforts of our kitchen workers. I appreciate all the volun-teered hours, it certainly aids in reducing of overhead. We’re up in profits from last year. Tony and all kitchen staff, thank you for your continuous commitment to the success of our lodge.

We are taking estimates for an upgrade in our bar security cameras. The safety of our bartenders, members and pa-trons is of the upmost importance.

The new furnace is installed and again we are warm. This was done through the efforts of Ken Gregory, our treasurer, Tom Quartaro, building and grounds and Michael Os-bourne, a member.

I appreciate (and so do our Bingo Players) all you did to bring this to completion.

We are sending the following delegates to the convention, Sam Cosentino, Shawn Corcoran,

Phyllis Lowry, Tony DiCostanzo, Jamie Kaim Jr. and my-self. Every year we donate to several charities while there. The council will decide on an amount we can afford to give. Here is the list from the NYSOSIA written by them:

The Cooley's Anemia Foundation, Alzheimer's Association and the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism are the three major charities supported by the Order of Sons of Italy in America.

The Cooley's anemia Foundation is dedicated to serving children and young adults afflicted with the genetic blood disease Thalassemia. For further information on the Coo-ley's anemia Foundation (CAF), visit www.thalassemia.org. The Alzheimer's Association is the largest voluntary health organization committed to finding a cure for Alzheimer's and helping those affected by the disease. For further infor-mation on the Alzheimer's Association, visit www.alz.org. The Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism was established by NFL quarterback Doug Flutie and his wife, Laurie, in honor of their son, Doug, Jr. who was diagnosed with au-tism at the age of three. Their primary objective is to pro-vide families with a place to turn when they are in need of support and autism resources. For additional information on the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, vis-it www.dougflutiejrfoundation.org.

Project.

At the May 25th assembly we will choose 4 charities. Bal-lots with 8-10 from which to pick will be available. Lisa Petronio and Louise Lawson signed up for refreshments after the meeting.

Our April Festival meeting was poorly attended. I’m sched-uling another for Wednesday May 17th at 7:00pm. Please try to attend. We need fresh ideas. Maria Cohrs is again chairperson for the cookie booth. She needs bakers. Andrea Augustine will host the cake booth. Donate cakes and cook-ies brothers and sisters. Ask a friend or relative to bake. We will need people in the kitchen the week before the festival. Phyllis Lowry will be in charge of the eggplant concession. Booth chair people are looking for members/friends to work both days. The hours we’re open are approximately 4-10 Friday, August 11th and Saturday the 12th. You can sign up for as few or as many hours as you please. There’s sign-up sheets posted on the wall next to the kitchen.

The 210 weekly drawings have awarded wk. #4 to Jan Cutillo and Tony DiCostanzo, wk. #5 to Yolanda Nicolletti and Bob Rose, wk. #6 for C. Corcoran and Barb Lidestri, wk. #7 were Jim Modera and Bob Lindsay. All 8 winners received $25. Bill Evans received $50 on the extra 5th week drawing. Weeks 8 & 9 will both have two $25 winners. Week 10 we’ll see 4 at $25, 2 winning $50, 1 will be drawn for $100 and the last winner will receive $200. Thank you Joe Cirencione our 210 chairman.

Our new kitchen manager is being trained on how we oper-ate. Tony is easing him into the routine. Nicholas Legott Jr has come to us with a well of knowledge. He will supervise the kitchen and wait staff. Anyone wishing to volunteer to work in the kitchen or dining room please let him or I know. We’re not losing all our regulars. We want/need volunteers too. I am now scheduling all events; I’m availa-ble any time of the day or evening.

It has been suggested that a new cookbook be established. Let’s start by putting recipes in the newsletter. If you’d like to contribute, you may email, regular mail or drop them off to the office. You might see yours in next month’s newsletter. Let’s share our favorite recipes with each other.

Bingo Players have asked for changes in the menu. Start-ing this Sunday May 7th there will be additions made. The kitchen can use volunteers to run register, take counter orders and hand them out. This will free up the cook for preparation. Sully the bingo commissioner can always use substitutes on his teams. If you’re interested, let him or someone in the office know.

This past month we welcomed two more into the lodge they’re Sister Patricia Telerico and Brother Patrick McDonald. I look forward to seeing them both at future events and meetings.

Dr. Joe Rubé our District VIII Trustee recently encour-aged new members to get involved in the lodge. I want to go a step further. EVERYONE, please get involved. The Sons of Italy is the oldest national organization for men and women. In order to promote our culture and heritage we must stay active in our lodge. This takes members. Please, offer a few hours a week, a month or an event. There is something everyone can do.

Celebrating Italian Americans: Cinema and Theatre; Saluting Italian American Actors and Directors

On the occasion of the 150th birth of Luigi Pirandello, master of the dramatic arts, whose philosophical writings are enacted on the stage and screen worldwide, the Italian Heritage and Culture Committee of New York, Inc. chooses its 2017 theme, Celebrating Italian Americans: Cinema and Theatre; Saluting Italian American Actors and Directors. Beginning with Rudolf Valentino's silent films in the 1920's and the ear-ly Italian ethnic theatre in immigrant communities across the United States in the late 1800's to the present day Oscar and Tony winners, the list of Italian Americans in the performing arts is too numerous to mention. During 2017, IHCC-NY, Inc. will highlight some of these accomplished performers and directors of cinema and theatre. During the year, and especially in October's Italian Heritage and Culture Month, there will be film and theatre presentations, symposiums, seminars, a student essay contest, proclamations and tributes to those Italian Americans who have brought us entertain-ment, thought provoking performances and emotional con-nections through their stellar portrayals. In addition, there will be a special recognition, the IHCC-NY's highest honor, the daVinci award, granted to an honoree this year for exem-plary work in the field of cinema and theatre. The IHCC-NY, Inc. is now in its 41st year of promoting, presenting and pre-serving Italian and Italian American culture and heritage in the Tri-State area. The committee of leaders in the Italian and Italian American community continues its year-round cele-bration of an annual theme, which is mirrored by others in their event programming throughout New York and in other cities in America. Joseph Sciame, president/chair of the IHCC-NY, Inc. recently stated: ''We are delighted to offer and sponsor a wide perspective of the talents of so many who need to be read about and known for their respective contri-butions to the cinema and theatre of this country. Italian Americans in cinema and theatre have been stellar'' The pub-lic's interest and support of the committee's educational mate-rials, including theme related posters, bookmarks and book-lets, which are then distributed free to educational and cultur-al institutions, is appreciated. This enables the committee's ongoing education of the general public about the merits of Italian and Italian American culture. For the underwriting of the IHCC-NY's educational materials, which will be noted in the committee's annual calendar of events, donations can be made by check to: IHCC-NY, Inc. and mailed to IHCC-NY, Inc. c/o Joan Migliori, Calandra Institute, 25 W. 43 St., 17th Floor, NY, NY 10036. For additional information, please call, 212-642-2094.
