Council Reports:
ACT Council
There have been some minor teething problems with the CVS for modi-
fied vehicles. A scheme for recreational vehicles is also under considera-
tion. NSW new Minister for RMS has indicated that she believes the 60
day trial for historic vehicles is working well and expects it to continue
pretty much as currently structured.
Wheels attracted about 750 vehicles and just over $3,000 was raised by
the nominated charity, TADACT. Council Registrar thanked members of
car clubs for their reporting of apparently non compliant vehicles which
attended Wheels.
The review of the Council’s constitution and by-laws is under way. Mem-
ber clubs need to submit any representations they wish to make by next
meeting of the Council in April 2017. Only representations made by affili-
ated clubs will be considered – ie no personal representations.
Council is awaiting the results of the trial of the 60 day arrangements in
NSW. Affiliated clubs are to be asked at AGM or thereabouts to consider
making renewed approaches to ACT Government for two separate
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 5
schemes which would be compatible with NSW schemes. One would be
the CRS with a 60 day log book arrangement and the second would be
an entirely separate scheme along the lines of the NSW CVS for modified
vehicles.
Major forthcoming events notified to Council
The Cuban Embassy is planning an event for 22 April showcasing
particularly but not necessarily exclusively pre 1961 vehicles at the bus
deport from about 9.00am to about 3.00 pm to highlight for heritage
motoring enthusiasts the population of pre 1961 cars still in use in Cuba
and to promote tourism to Cuba.
This event clashes with ACT Heritage open day event at Gungahlin
Homestead, Crace on Sunday 22 April. Details of access arrangements
for the Heritage event at Gungahlin will be on the club’s website. It was
suggested that STHARC members should assemble at the club house to
travel and arrive in convoy.
National Motoring Heritage Day will be 21 May 2017. Shannons Cars N
Coffee will be held on the same day. There is an opportunity for clubs to
organize their own events perhaps terminating at the Cars and Coffee
event destination. The opinion of STHARC members was sought on
having STHARC organize a general run including a brief tour through
Queanbeyan and terminating at the Shannons event. There appeared to
be good support for the idea.
Battle of Waterloo will be held on 18 June which is the actual date of the
event but a long time ago. A location has yet to be determined.
Marques in the Park is scheduled for 12 November. There are some
clashes with other interstate events but at this time of the year clashes
are virtually unavoidable.
Arrangements for Terribly British Day are in hand. The date is yet to be
confirmed and is subject to availability of the Queanbeyan Park venue.
page 6 The Wheel # 175

Normal date for this event is the first Sunday in December, but it may be necessary to move to the second Sunday. on 19 May at the Albury /Wodonga hosted event over that weekend and including a NMHD run.
Events Report:
Details of events are loaded onto STHARC website as they become
available.

in the newsletter.
Invitations in hand to: National Trust ACT Heritage Festival open

Other forthcoming events : Social gathering this Thursday night at
Thai Restaurant Queanbeyan, Haulin’ the Hume Sat 8- Sun 9 April, Mid
week run to Cotter 20 April, Bateman’s Bay Weekend 29-30 April, Visit
to historic Bederville near Braidwood postponed from 8 April – resched-
uled for 6 May. Lagan Pub display was postponed and may now be
held at the end of April.
General Business: Annual presentation of awards - Past issues with
substantial standing costs to cover and the substantial workload on
those doing the organizing make running the event burdensome – It has
been decided that awards presentation will be done at AGM. If club
members wish to have a function at about that time it can be organized
by those who want it.
STHARC Christmas party venue needs to be decided. Past practice of
circulating around community halls in the clubs catchment area seems
to work well. Booking of the chosen hall needs to be done soon if we
want our preferred date and location. Events Committee should have
primary running on this but there is no reason why other club members
cannot participate or if the Committee agrees take over
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 7
the running of the event.
Delegate to CHMC will be attending the AGM at Albury/Wodonga on 19
May. A proposal has been put forward to amend the CHMC Constitu-
tion and by-laws to make them compliant with the RMS requirements
for umbrella organizations approved to operate the CVS arrangements.
CHMC needs to establish an Eligibility Committee and a RMS Liaison
Officer. There are no provisions in the existing arrangements of
CHMC for this to be done. After some discussion on the subject, it was
moved that the STHARC Delegate be authorized to vote in favour of
the proposed amendments subject to his judgement of the proposals
ultimately put before the meeting for approval. Moved Lawrie Nock

1968 Mercedes 280S By Malcolm Stewart
Vehicle History.
Members will recognise this car as it for-merly belonged to Ian and Chrystina MacLeish. I was delighted that Chrystina passed the car on to me and gave Rae-lene and myself the opportunity to enjoy the car in the same way that she and Ian did. It is also nice to know that the car stays within the STHARC family.
The car has an interesting history. In 1968 the Mercedes S class was and still is Mercedes most prestigious model. This car was built in Stuttgart in March 1968. It was delivered on 1 June 1968 to its first own-er, Dr John Thomas Ward who lived in Willoughby Sydney. The Dealer was Pearce Bros of North Sydney. In 1980 the car was sold to Mr A. G. Cameron of Kiama. Ian and Chrystina were the third owners when they purchased the car I believe in about 2000.
STHARC members will appreciate that having a full history of a car, in-cluding full documentation adds enormously to a cars interest. Tucked into the passenger door map pocket was the original owner’s folder. In-cluded is the original delivery certificate, 190-page maintenance manual, warrant documents, owner’s manual, supplements, service manual, full set of 1968 Mercedes Benz global service maps and various correspondence re-garding the vehicle
The car was religiously serviced every 3,000 miles from new by Mercedes deal-ers in Chatswood and Bowral following its move to Kiama. I understand the car was rarely driven after 1984. .
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 9
Chrystina tells me that when she and Ian travelled to the coast to visit the seller, the car formed part of a large collection and that originally, they had gone to look at his other vehicles
About the car
The car is dark blue and it is interesting to note that the MacLeish’s thirty five year newer 270D Mercedes has the identical paint code! The car is in fabulous original condition with a completely unmarked interior. I have rarely seen a car of this age stand up so well. It is a testament to its care but also the incredible build quality of Mercedes Benz.
The S in the name signifies both the class (Mercedes use this term to differentiate its models) and the type of fuel delivery which in this case signifies carburettors. If the car had an ‘E” it would mean Fuel Injection and an “L” would mean long wheel base. The model designation is W108.
The W 108 was launched in 1965.The initial model lineup consisted of three W108s: 250S, 250SE, and 300SE. the existing models were given an upgrade with a single engine, the 2778 cc
The W108 now included 280S and 280SE, with production starting in November 1967. These replaced the 250S, 250SE and 300SE. Mercedes built 93,666 280S models between 1967 and 1972. Mercedes report that there are currently 834 280S models still registered in Germany.
The car features a four speed automatic transmission, four wheel disc brakes, independent four wheel suspension, power steering and for its time safety standards that were unheard of. On the 280S the two downdraft carburettors produced 140 hp (100 kW) and could push the car to 185 km/h (180 on auto), whilst 0-100 was done in 12.5 seconds.
Parts are readily available and reasonably priced. The power steering gasket kit cost me $12! The quote was $500 to fit it! Needless to say I did it myself. There are plenty of non original parts available that are of good quality.
page 10 The Wheel # 175
Continued from page 9
While researching the car it was fascinating to read Mercedes own historic website. Talk about honest appraisal of what to look for. Example:
“As far as the engines are concerned, the 2.5-litre versions have a reputation for not being able to cope with full power. But if you find a well-kept 2.5-litre example you can still invest with confidence since, as classic models, these cars are normally only driven with extreme care. The aluminium three-litre unit in the 300 SE can incur high repair costs if damaged. 280 S/SE and 280 SE 3.5, on the other hand, offer impressive longevity. Both manual and automatic transmissions are generally considered to be robust.” https://www.mercedes-benz.com/en/mercedes-benz/lifestyle/mercedes-benz-magazines/classic-magazine/buyers-guide-the-w108-models/
Raelene and I look forward to many years of enjoyment in our ‘new car’. What really surprises me is how well it drives. It is as good as most newer cars. I have already investigated air-conditioning $2500 for a complete system ex-USA. Thanks again to the car’s former custodians Ian and Chrystina for taking such good care of her.

Majura Park 25 March When Majura Park shopping centre was looking to celebrate its first birthday one of their customers suggested that they should contact Ian McLeish about getting some old cars as a feature. Ian’s Model A was place in the foyer and STHARC members were invit-ed to bring some display vehicles. With the exception of one year when there was a clash of events, STHARC has participated in this cel-ebration each year with a static display outside the main Woolworths entrance to the complex.
The usual car buffs have their special events such as Wheels to attend. Those with little knowledge of or interest in heritage motoring don’t at-tend these motor vehicle displays. That is what makes events such as the Majura Park display relevant to heritage motoring and the public at large. The diverse range of vehicles owned by STHARC members pro-vides our club with an opportunity to mount a display with something of interest to a broad cross section of the community.
In a week when it rained just about every day, Saturday turned out to be an anomaly. STHARC members turned out a range of heritage mo-tor vehicles to confront unsuspecting members of the public as they turned up to do their shopping. Eleven vehicles arrived at the site and drove up the footpath to take their places, backs to the wall, outside the shopping centre. The vehicles spanning almost 60 years of motoring heritage on display, attracted interest from a wide range of people, most of whom had no usual interest in or contact with
heritage motoring.
Southern Tablelands Heritage Automotive Restorers Club Inc. page 15
Some of the more agile younger visitors explored the underside of these things which they had never experienced before. Fortunately the drip trays provided some warning of the possible features to be found. There was no disgrace for the cars which really did need the drip trays – they do it all the time and the owners get used to just replacing the lost fluids. It was
surprising to see so many young children checking out what is inside the engine bays in particular. Confusion reigned for some of the young people who discovered the spare engine in the back ends of the Beetles. Owners of some modern cars were happy to note the fact that their sub 2 litre cars could leave the 6 litre plus monsters for dead in just about every aspect of motoring except perhaps for uniqueness.
When threatened rain, interrupted play early in the afternoon, the party very quickly broke up.

Ladies’ March Morning
Tea
After a fresh start to the morning, ten smiling ladies met for morning tea on Friday, March 31 at the Millhouse Café in Queanbeyan.
With all agreeing it was too cool to sit outside, Benita found a room inside with a large table to accommodate all of us. Those arriving a little later found us easily – they just followed the noise from our room.
Everybody enjoyed their selection of beverages and cakes and all seemed to enjoy one another’s company, as well as the various topics of conversation, from one end of the table to the other.
Nancy-Lea has been making lovely twiddle muffs for dementia pa-tients. If anyone has any leftover or unwanted wool at home, or an empty cotton thread spools, could you please bring them along to one of our morning teas or a meeting and it can be passed on to Nancy-Lea, who I am sure would really appreciate any contribution.
Attendees: Jane Nock, Kay Carratt, Nancy-Lea Legge, Winnett, Beni-ta Thomas, Chris Hillbrick-Boyd, Krystyna McLeish, Ronda Cornwell and Christine Brown.
