Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute Newsletter
A Story Worth Bottling
Ever since the dry, dusty days of the gold rush, Ballarat’s residents have always worked up a thirst for the amber ale. From May 20-28, the BMI will be celebrating the long tradition of beer making and drinking in Ballarat with the ‘Beers Through the Years’ exhibition.
The exhibition kicks off with a huge opening event on May 20 in the Humffray Room & Minerva space, with performances, talks, and plenty of opportunity to taste Ballarat brewers’ latest offerings. Get into the science behind the brews on May 25 with Peter Aldred, head lecturer in brewing at FedUni, as he speaks on the Science of Beer in the Humffray Room. But of course, don’t miss the exhibition on Ballarat’s brewing and hotel heritage, on display in the Humffray Room over Ballarat Heritage Weekend on May 27 & 28, and during the week from May 21 - 26 by appointment ($5 entry).Full details, back page.

May 27th & 28th Enjoy all that’s on offer as part of Ballarat Heritage Weekend, with this year’s theme of ‘Mysteries’. In the lending library we will host talks about the BMI at 11am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm & 4pm, along with mystery photographs on display from the Max Harris Collection, and a story writing competition in collaboration with Playing in the Attic and Minerva’s Books. In the Heritage Reading Room there will be themed books and activities to explore. The FedUni Arts Academy (pictured right) will delight us with performance works inspired by the BMI at 10am & 12pm. FedUni design students will display board games in the Williamson Foyer. Find the full Heritage Weekend program at ballaratheritageweekend.com
Here’s how Angela Campbell, FedUni performing arts lecturer (pictured left), describes the Arts Academy’s involvement:
“While heritage is often thought of in terms of dusty old objects or impressive built
environments, we at the Arts Academy bring heritage alive in the present through contemporary performance and art work. We ask our students: “how are you making heritage, right now?”Arts Academy first year actors have been presenting public
performances for Heritage Weekend across Ballarat’s glorious historic streetscapes and heritage buildings since 2013. The acting students have staged group-devised, site-specific performances, playing to both local audiences and visitors during Heritage Weekend, an event that attracts up to 16,000 people each year. Our Visual Communications students have designed posters and constructed ‘wayfinding’ strategies for audiences to follow, while our Visual Arts students have created Digital Art responses to historical and imagined stories, and to archives and images from Ballarat’s colourful past.”
Explore and enjoy at the BMI in May.
