GENERAL KV KRISHNA RAO 16TH JULY 1923 - 30TH JANUARY 2016

It has been entrusted upon me to write about

the illustrious General KV Krishna Rao -

Kotikalapudi Venkat Krishna Rao, my 6 decade old

friend & benefactor, who left for his heavenly

abode in Delhi. True to his ethos he died in the

service of the nation having gone to Delhi to

attend & chair the annual Chiefs Collegium.

My association with the General started in

1950 when he was serving in the Joint Services

Wing (now called the NDA) at Dehra Doon . The

foundation for his long and distinguished career

was set after attending Staff College at

Wellington & Imperial Defence College at UK. He

served in many important appointments among

them Dy Director Military Operations, Brigade

Commander in Ladakh in '65 war, 8 Mountain

Division Commander in '71 war (where he was

awarded PVSM), Dy Chief of Army Staff, GOC in C

Western Command, pinnacling with The Chief of

the Indian Army.

Post retirement his services were sought by

the Indian Government and he served as Governor

in the states of J & K (2 tenures) & Northeast.

While it is difficult to single out from his many

achievements, holding of free & fair elections as

Governor in J & K, Chairing the expert committee

for reorganisation of Army to enhance its

operational capability & sanctioning of free

rations for the Officers need to be singled out.

For the Mahar Regiment, he was our first

officer to rise to the highest position of COAS. As

Colonel of the Regiment he was instrumental in

convincing the the Govt to present colours to the

Regiment considering their high performance in

every operation undertaken from 1947-1965. This

was done by the then President Shri VV Giri in

February 1970. His tenure as COR, saw The

Martyrs Memorial bearing the names of all

personnel of the Regiment killed in operations

since its raising, being established. The war

memorial Boys Hostel providing free boarding,

lodging & education, for son's of those killed in

operations was also built during his tenure.

He was a reference point for regimental spirit

and always wanted the Regiment to achieve

professional excellence and not live on the

laurels of their predecessors. His maximum

emphasis was on operational preparedness and

training to ensure success. He was very

deliberate in planing & never acted in a hurry.

This was the secret of his success in whatever

tasks he undertook. He remained accessible to ex

service men of the regiment even post

retirement.

It is important to mention here that his

partner in all these achievements was his wife Mrs

Radha Rao. Mrs Rao thru her charming & ever

graceful demeanour endeared herself with the

family members of the officers & others ranks. He

leaves behind 2 accomplished children Narayan &

Lalitha and their families.

Q. Who is the South Indian Air Force Officer who received Vir Chakra as a young Flt Lt and later commanded the Air Force Station Begumpet, Hyderabad?

Answer for the “Do You Know” Question of Apr 2016

Q. Who was the first Indian Navy Officer to take over the coveted post of Chief of the Naval Staff of India from the last British officer? He spent most of his youth in Hyderabad.

Ans:

He is none other than Vice Adm Ram Dass Katari PVSM AVSM. He was born in Chingleput (Chengalpattu) in Madras Presidency on October 8, 1911.

He spent most of his childhood and youth in Hyderabad and was a student of Mahbub College High School and Nizam's College (1916-1927).Katari was in the first batch of Indian cadet-entry officers to join TS Dufferin on its establishment in 1927. He topped the entrance

examination and distinguished himself by earning the Viceroy's Gold Medal. Later, he was the first graduate of TS Dufferin to serve on its Governing Board.

At the start of World War II, he was commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in the Royal Indian Navy Volunteer Reserve and specialized in anti-submarine warfare. Later, he also served as an instructor at the Anti-Submarine Warfare School. At the end of the war, as a Lieutenant Commander, he was appointed the Commanding Officer of HMIS Cauvery (U10) and led the mine clearance operations in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

During the period of Independence of India. He led the operations off the Kathiawar coast during the integration of Junagadh. In February 1949, he was appointed the Chief of Personnel at Naval Headquarters (NHQ).

In 1953, he underwent a staff course at the Imperial Defence College, London. Upon his return in early 1954, he was appointed the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS) and promoted to Commodore.

In March 1956, he was promoted to Rear Admiral. In October 1956, he became the first Indian officer to be appointed the Flag Officer Commanding of the Fleet.

On 22 April 1958, he became the first Indian officer to be appointed Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). As CNS, he designed the framework for India's strategy for managing maritime security issues. India's first aircraft-carrier, INS Vikrant, was commissioned during his tenure.

As CNS, he led the naval operations during the liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule in December 1961.He retired as CNS on 4 June 1962. In 1964 he was appointed Ambassador to Burma. He was the first setter of the Hindu Crossword and

DO YOU KNOW (Continuation) IQ REMEMBERED

Ancient Aviator Anecdote

During my four-year tenure (1962-66) as a flight commander in a Hunter squadron based at Palam and then Hindon, a large number of young pilots passed through my hands. Among them was IQ whose nickname derived from the first two alphabets of his given name. This son of Punjab was a natural flier who loved being airborne and soon developed into an effective fully operational pilot. In addition to his in-built flying skills, IQ was a good natured, likeable young officer who showed great professional promise.

We were periodically short of supervisory pilots and quite often I had to go on ORP (Operational Readiness Platform) myself and control the flight from the underground bunker. On one occasion I was on ORP with IQ as my wingman when we received a no-warning live scramble. Though stretched out flat on the bed half asleep and with a greater distance to be covered to his aircraft (ac), IQ's reaction was so fast as to roll with me for take off! Most squadron pilots have a favourite ac for range work but he took any ac and brought back good results in gunnery, rocketry or bombing. On an air defence inter-sector exercise, as my wingman on a 2 vs 2 mock air combat against a pair of Gnat ac from another air base, he returned with 'photo kills' on both ac while maintaining his position throughout all the high-G manoeuvers. Whenever our commanding officer flew on a tactical training sortie, he asked for IQ as his wingman – the ultimate recognition for a squadron pilot.

Both IQ and myself were sent together to the IAM (Institute of Aviation Medicine) for our high performance ac medical tests. We both got our A1 G1 * category but I knew he would soon be posted out. IQ got married to a lovely young lady and thereafter moved on posting to a Sukhoi squadron in Adampur while I relocated to Jamnagar to raise and command the IAF's first Operational Training

compiled the daily puzzle till his demise. As there were no supporting systems such as computers printers etc. he did this all by hand preparing the grid and filling them up, creating the clues etc. He had prepared so many puzzles in advance which were found later by his daughter and son-in-law stored in a box. He also authored a memoir “A Sailor Remembers.”

He lived in Sainikpuri till his demise. Quarter Deck a memorial dedicated to him on his birth centenary on October 8, 2011is located at A 21 where he lived. This was to fulfil the wishes of Mrs Ram Dass Katari.

These are plaques found in Quarter Deck along with a number of memorabilia and documents displayed. The greatness of the person and his times as well as his personal passion for cross word etc. can be understood fully only when we visit the Quarter Deck! His son-in-law is Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas PVSM, AVSM, VrC, VSM,

thADC who was the 13 Chief of Naval Staff. It is a strange coincidence that he too has the same name as his father-in-law.

Unit (OTU) on Hunter ac. On a transit ferry flight through Adampur I met IQ's squadron commander who spoke very highly of him as a pilot and officer. On that trip I had lunch with IQ in his house and, though he confessed to missing his old squadron, seemed very happy in his new one. Some months later I was shocked to get the tragic news that IQ had crashed in a low level exercise. I have never flown the Sukhoi ac and had no access to the Court of Inquiry findings but wondered what could have possibly caused such a gifted pilot to lose control of his ac and / or the situation? There were theories galore but aviators of his caliber use their flying skills, knowledge and experience with foresight which allowed for 'errors of judgement' especially at low level. Whatever be the reason, IQ became just another flight safety statistic; neither the first nor the last aviator to become one.

The years passed and, after I left the air force in 1986, I was in Kolkata on my company's business. While exiting a hotel I held a door open for a lady with two children. She smiled her thanks, then paused to look hard at me and finally asked me if I happened to be 'Wingco Parker'? On receiving confirmation, IQ's erstwhile widow (re)introduced herself. We exchanged small talk, addresses and promised to keep in touch. It is now near half a century since IQ passed into history but continues to live in the memory of those who have a reason to remember him.

IQ REMEMBERED (Continuation) GEN RAJENDRA SINHJI

Wonder, how much you know about Gen Rajendra Sinhji, the second Chief of Army Staff, first being Field Marshal Cariappa. RSI (Rajendra Sinhji Institute) is named after him. He was born in Kathiawar, Gujarat on 15 June 1899. He was the elder brother of KS Ranjit Sinhji and uncle of KS Duleep Sinhji, the two cricketing luminaries. He studied at Rajkumar College Rajkot, later at Royal Military College Sandhurst. In 1921, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in Indian Army. He held various ranks and offices in the British Indian Army and served with distinction during the Second World War. For his courageous leadership and determined action during Second World War,Rajendra Sinhji was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1941.He was the first Indian to be honored with this decoration.

The Partition of India in 1947 caused an upheaval in both the security situation and the dynamics of the Indian army. The partition meant the division of the Indian army, which was concurrently called upon to deal with several critical security situations arising from the partition of the country and the anticipated integration of the princely states. Also during this period, British officers who held most of the senior ranks in the Indian army were gradually disengaged, being replaced with Indian officers. During this critical period, Rajendra Sinhji was called upon to shoulder many onerous responsibilities and received rapid promotion in rank. The integration of Hyderabad State with India was executed during his term in office as GOC-in-C (South).

As the senior-most serving officer in the army, Gen. Rajendra Sinhji was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Indian Army on 14 January 1953, following the retirement of General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa, Rajendra Sinhji received the rank of General on the same day. With effect from 1 April 1955, the President of India constitutionally designated the Commander-in-chief Rajendra Sinhji as the first head of the Indian army and designated him as Chief of Army Staff. He held that office until his retirement from service on 14 May 1955.
