Delaire Country Club

Curt KarpelPresident, Board of Governors

To those members who will be leaving Delaire shortly for the summer, I wish you safe travels and good times before you again return. As everyone can see, Delaire is entering a new and exciting time as our golf courses are renovated. When the courses re-open at different times in the fall, new and varied challenges will await you. These

renovations will make you even prouder to be a member of the finest private country club in South Florida.

During the upcoming months, Delaire will continue to function. Our various standing committees will meet and plan for a successful upcoming season. Please do not forget to periodically visit our website, Delaire.org, to see the regular drone flyovers of work being done on the golf courses. Thank you to Norm Nebel, a Club member, for making these videos possible. You will be amazed at the construction process and the progress made in completing these courses.

Regardless of whether you are here for the summer or somewhere else, do not hesitate to contact me, any Board member, or Trent Squire about any concerns or any suggestion(s) that you may have. Best regards for a happy and healthy summer.

Help me to welcome our new Board members and all who volunteered to serve on committees. The present and future path of the club, the landscape, and operational policies all stem from the work and recommendations from committees to the Board of Governors. Thanks to the extensive survey completed by the membership last year, the

Board and committees will have this useful tool to help formulate decisions and determine where emphasis on improvement must be applied. Also, while knowing there can always be improvement, the survey results will be useful to understand what is working well.

In an article written by our most recent past President, Art Newman, I read that “members should take the time to shake the hand and give a thank you to members of the Delaire staff.” In a similar vein, I ask that all members please take the time to recognize your Board of Governors and all those on committees that dedicate their personal time to improve and maintain Delaire as a premiere club. The task for those who volunteer is not always easy… at times the criticism is too quick (and we won’t even mention the pay scale), so acknowledgment of and gratitude for time and effort are fundamental to keeping the volunteer process healthy and strong. As always, thank you for continued support.

This will be my final column for The Good Life. As I previously stated, I am turning over the responsibilities for this publication to my colleague and friend Judy Tarter. I have every confidence that she will do a fabulous job.

I was “volunteered” for this position when I first moved to Delaire 13 years ago. It has been a labor of love, and I am proud to say that I believe The Good Life has evolved into a publication we can all be proud of… one that represents the high quality and standards of this community. I have not done this alone and want to thank everyone who worked with me to make it possible.

I have always been committed to listening and responding to the comments and suggestions of our members, since it is your publication. Knowing Judy, I am certain that she feels the same way.

Delaire is an amazing place… filled with wonderful, caring people and “big enough to have choices, small enough to call home.”

Thank you giving me the privilege of trying to communicate that uniqueness in The Good Life.

Just My Opinion...Barbara Singer, Editor

A Few Words...Judy Tarter, Associate Editor

If you watched the Masters Golf Tournament and saw the magnificent golf course, you will understand why we are so excited to watch our golf course renovation beginning! We watched Bernhard Langer at the Masters and remembered when he visited us at Delaire just last year and “performed” for us! Well, now, we must arrange an invitation for him to “perform again” when our new golf course is completed!

The mountains of dirt one day, then turning the piles into level property and soon to become beautiful tees, fairways, lakes, bunkers and greens are truly inspirational to me, and has driven me to take up golf again! Please know, that watching the golf course renovation in progress is what made me recognize how lucky we are at Delaire to have a new world coming soon. We lead a wonderful Good Life that together with our fabulous club house, fitness center and pool… combined soon with a magnificent all new 27-hole golf course will make us truly the Best Premiere Club in Florida! The Wonderful World of Delaire is truly a magical place to call home!

I proudly want to announce and welcome Robert Lidz as my Co-Editor of the Good Life. Together, we look forward to bringing you this fabulous magazine and continuing Barbara’s incredible work.

On behalf of all Delaire members and staff, I want to thank Barbara Singer for her dedication and love that has been so beautifully exemplified in our Good Life magazine. Barbara has made the newsletter a truly “Golden Globe Award” winner!

With Great Appreciation from your family at Delaire - Kudos to Barbara!

The Nominating Committee for Delaire Country Club, chaired by Joan Gray and with newly elected members Marty Friedman, Bill Handwerker, Bart Lewis and Judy Tarter would like to inform our membership that if you are interested or you would like to consider running for the Delaire Board of Governors or the Nominating Committee and have any questions, please feel comfortable reaching out to any of the committee members or the Board of Governors.

As per the Delaire By-laws, you must have served for 2 years on one committee or for 2 years on two different committees, and must be a member in good standing.

We look forward to hearing from Delaire members anytime and encourage your much needed and appreciated participation. Of course, all conversations will remain private when you reach out to us.

* Although we have pictures of most of our members on the site, we are still missing about 50 pictures. If your picture is not posted to the Members Directory, and you would like it there, please send us a picture that you like, or visit Neka, and she will take a photograph worth framing and sending to your loved ones.

In addition to making the website, Delaire.org, more appealing and informative to prospective members and potential home owners, the Communications Committee is also trying to make the website more interesting and useful to Delaire members. This past month, we have added two new features, which we hope will do that.

The first feature, is a regular update on the golf course renovation. These updates will include videos from our drone, piloted by Norman “Captain Kirk” Nebel and images contributed by Margot Smith, Steve Salzman (and any member that wishes to send them to us). These

updates can be found in several places including the Delaire.org website under the public facing “About Us” and “Golf” tabs, and in the photo gallery in the Members Only “My Club” section, as well as on our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/DelaireCountryClub).

The other improvement to our website is the addition of the members pictures* on the first page of the Members Directory (which is also in the “My Club” section of our website).

I am not sure how many of you have the problem that I have, which is I often recognize the face but forget the name. I know that this change will help me, and I hope it helps you as well.

News from Your POACharla Levine, POA Secretary

There a number of exciting initiatives that the POA is currently spearheading.

The POA has approved a street lighting program to replace the 35 year old lighting fixtures with new poles and LED lighting fixtures, the very latest technology for our entire community. In addition to replacing the lights and poles, additional lights and poles will be added where needed. The most modern LED lighting fixtures will also be added to our entrance and “round-a-bout” for a great welcoming drive when entering our community. This project is scheduled to begin during the off season, taking place during the summer months. We are very excited about this long overdue project. The POA is using funds from the reserve account and there will be no special assessment.

Additionally, The POA has upgraded the guest call-in procedure to provide you with an alternative to the telephone call-in system at the guardhouse. In working with our gate access provider, ABDi, we have developed a system that will allow you to admit your guests, vendors, contractors, etc. through the internet or an APP on your smart phone. You will also be able edit and update your permanent list, contact information, emergency information and view your personal entry logs.

We hope this system will provide you with a simple and efficient way of admitting guest and vendors without going through the telephone call-in system. The telephone call-in system will remain for those wishing to use that method.

We look forward to continued improvements for Delaire.

As the chairman of the Green Committee and co-chairman with Ron Ellish of the Golf Course Enhancement Committee, my main emphasis this year is to get the golf course re-grassed and enhanced. The golf course is our most important asset and needs to be brought back to the pristine condition we deserve. We have waited two years to get it started and it is finally under way. Travis McCoy, Ron and I will oversee the progress of the full project and will make sure you get what you voted for. After the project is completed the Green Committee will make sure the course stays in like new

condition for many years to come. The committee will promulgate rules to protect the golf course and take into consideration the needs of our handicapped and special need members. I look forward to hearing from our members so as to make sure we achieve what you want and need.

Norman Nebel, our resident drone pilot, will be flying over the course weekly to show all of our members the golf course renovation progress. Be sure to follow Norm’s adventures on the Delaire web site. A big thanks to Norm for keeping us all updated from the comfort of our homes!

As a side note, I know everyone wants to see the progress of the project as it comes to fruition, however, please do not drive on the course after it closes because it is dangerous and will not only ruin your cart, but will slow down the project.

Here we are at the end of another season. What a great season it was. Both the men and women added a new tournament, called Bracketology and as it stands right now we will bring it back again next season.

Our program for next year will be exciting, especially with our new and improved golf course…challenging, but most importantly, fun. I would like to thank Joe and Billy Jones for their tireless efforts to make our golf program great. Nancy Carver, my Co-Chair, who among other responsibilities, arranged and organized all the mixed couples tournaments, coordinated golf events with our calendar, and synchronized special dining to go along with these events. Nancy did a remarkable job and I am honored to have her as my Co-Chair for the upcoming season.

Cathy Cutler Salzman, our Ladies Golf Chairman, and the Ladies Golf Committee ran a fantastic program for all our women golfers. Alan Tarter, men’s tournament chair, with his committee prepared all the Wednesday tournaments, the men’s major tournaments, rules seminars and so many other things that help make our golf program successful.

We can’t forget the golf staff along with Russ, our starter, and Monica in our Pro Shop, who orders the clothes and other items, keeping our pro shop looking beautiful and up to date. Finally the 2016-2017 Golf Committee will be working hard through the summer to once again bring to all our members a wonderful golf experience next season for all to enjoy.

We know many of you will be leaving for the summer and we wish you safe journeys.

For all that are staying, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the golf course renovation. We hope you enjoy the experience of playing golf at our neighbor Bocaire. We will do everything we can to make our golf reciprocal program smooth and easy. We all look forward to playing on our fantastic, renovated golf course when the season begins.

Please don’t forget to use your store credits by May 31st. We still have a great selection of merchandise and golf equipment to enhance your summer golf experience.

WHOSE TURN IS IT TO PLAY?

Golf RulesAlan Tarter, FSGA Certified Rules Official

While playing their 2nd shots on the 8th hole on the Blue Course at Delaire CC, both A and B hit their balls into the water.

Player A’s ball was from the right side of the rough and went 180 yards entirely over the water and landed in the water very close to the green about 10 yards from the hole. His drop was behind the water about 160 yards from the hole.

Player B’s second shot from the fairway sliced into the middle of the lake about 30 yards from the hole. He last crossed the margin of the hazard near the green. He drops his ball within 2 club lengths of that point.

Whose turn is it to play?

Answer:

Player B plays 1st since his ball, in the water, was farther from the hole than Player A’s ball. Even though his drop is much closer than Player A’s drop, B plays first.

P.S. If possible, player B might have been able to drop on the green if he could find an equidistant opposite margin to where he last crossed the margin of the hazard. Even with this option, it was still Player B’s turn to play because his ball, in the water, was farther from the hole than Player A’s ball.

On March 27th, on the 12th hole of the finals of the World Match Play Championship, Jason Day played first from 22 yards from the hole, even though Louis Oosthuizen had dropped his ball behind a water hazard 80 yards away. Oosthuizen’s ball had originally been in the water closer to the hole than Day’s ball. Therefore, Day was away. The fact that he dropped 80 yards away was irrelevant. The referee made the correct ruling.

The television commentators both admitted that they didn’t know why Day had hit first, however, each of them learned something new!

Congratulations to our 2016 golf winners.

Our Ladies Fall/Winter season has come to an end. Congratulations to all the winners of this season’s tournaments. Thanks to Dr. Len Popowitz, we have many photos, most of which you can find on our website www.delaire.org or our Facebook page. There is a large, varied group of winners, so make sure to give them your own special congratulations.

The DWGA will continue the tournaments throughout the summer in conjunction with the Bocaire Ladies group. Sign-up sheets will be in our ladies locker room as usual.

As the car carriers arrive we bid our friends that depart for other locations a safe and fun filled summer. The heavy equipment is demolishing and enhancing our golf courses, so let’s all think of how green and beautiful they will be when you return.

Our Pro shop has arranged for many great clubs for us to play, in addition to our neighbor Bocaire. To take advantage of this you must call Joe or Billy for starting times. I urge you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

I want to give a special thanks to my Board, my Executive Committee and Standing Committees. I am pleased with the success of our first year together along with the many new tournaments, and especially the success of the Play for P.I.N.K. tournament. A special thank you to all for your dedication and hard work.

If you stay in our wonderful Delaire or leave, I wish everyone a wonderful summer and look forward to seeing you all in the fall.

Delaire Woman’s Golf AssociationCathy Cutler-Salzman, President DWGA

I was very pleased to have had the privilege of chairing this year’s Play for P.I.N.K. event here at Delaire. Putting together an event like this is no easy task. Just ask the excellent committee that I was lucky enough to have - Charla Levine, Pam Kirshenbaum, Aileen Grebow, Ava Gluck, Donna Salvadore, Cathy Kimmel, Stewart Sims, Judy Tarter, Joan Zieky, Jane Posner, Simone Spies, Rochelle Danhi, Brenda Moss, Laura Zuchovicki and Janet Kaplan. They worked so very hard to make this event a success and it showed.

We had our 2nd annual tennis event, despite the threat of rain. Games, prizes and a great party was put together by Aileen Grebow and Lawrence Sagel. We had a fabulous day for our golf event and card day with a tremendous turnout. Joe & Billy Jones choreographed more than 180 golfers who came to hit the links for the final Play for P.I.N.K. event on Delaire’s soon to be old course.

Special mention to Herb and Sandra Khaner who cooked up about 65 pounds of their best yet chili; Simone Spies, Rochelle Danhi, Donna Salvadore, Cathy Kimmel and all the prize donors for their work on the raffle; Ava Gluck, who operated the Play for P.I.N.K. Boutique; Judy Tarter for the Wall of Honor; Judy Tarter and Joan Zieky for the card/mah jongg event; Jane Posner for heading up the registration, and Len Popowitz, our talented photographer. Brenda Moss coordinated the fabulous luncheon, and Laura Zuchovicki put together an incredible slideshow and first ever P.I.N.K. Portraits.

A huge thank you to all of the members, guests and friends who participated and especially to our Gold Star, Platinum and Corporate Sponsors. Be sure to check out Delaire’s website to see more photos and recognition to our Platinum and Corporate sponsors. The numbers are in and we surpassed our goal, raising more than $82,000!

We lost two very special people last year… Carol Magod and Bernice Waldbaum… whose dedication and generosity to this event was extraordinary. We will miss them both and they will continue to inspire us.

As always, many thanks go out to Trent Squire, Joe Jones, Billy Jones, Chef Glenn, Neka Martin, Robyn Bradshaw, Nancy Gaytan, Liz Shaw and the rest of the staff. Without you none of this would be possible.

PLAY FOR P.I.N.K.The Second Annual “Play for P.I.N.K.” Tennis Charity Tournament was played on February 24th. The format was a “social mixer-men & women”. The event was a great success with the participation of members and guests who made generous donations to a great charity.

PICKLEBALL at DELAIREOn March 7th, 42 members participated in the first ever Pickleball demonstration. Members attended a short demo of “How to Play” & explanation of the basic rules, followed by a chance to get on the court and take a turn playing. The feedback was extremely positive. Pickleball is played on a badminton size court, with paddles and a wiffle ball. Due to the high interest, dates throughout the year will be offered for those members that are interested in continuing to play and/or members who would like to learn to play this fun game.

It’s hard to believe that it has been more than 5 years since November 11, 2011 when the new clubhouse opened and Mario Botindari started at Delaire. Since then, Mario and his staff of 12 have worked hard to keep the clubhouse, the equipment and much of what we see and take for granted fresh and in good working order. Whether it is something as simple as changing light bulbs (we spend about $7,000 annually in light bulbs), or more complex jobs like welding mailboxes, building platforms for events like the Tony Orlando Show, repairing the dining room chairs, or even helping to maintain the refrigeration units in the kitchen, Mario’s staff does it. They are also responsible for less visible, but equally important, housekeeping and laundry support. In short, they really are the behind the scenes heroes and heroines of Delaire.

I wish we had the space to tell you about each of them, but this issue, features Lydia Rodgriques, who has been a member of the Delaire staff for a little over two years, but because she works as an attendant in the Ladies Locker Room, is probably not known to half the club. A little shy and quiet, Lydia is a warm and amazing young woman with an infectious smile. A native of South Florida, Lydia graduated from the Palm Beach Lakes magnet high school, and then started college. However, after only a year in college, her mother became terminally ill and Lydia had to leave school to support her mother. Following the death of her mother, she became a licensed massage therapist, but also, because it provided a more stable income, she continued to work in country clubs.

Today, Lydia is the primary support for her aunt, her cousin and her 1 month old baby daughter, her brother (who has a serious heart problem) and...two dogs, so in addition to working full time at Delaire, Lydia will take house sifting, dog sitting, house cleaning as well as massage work whenever it is available. Despite ali these responsibilities, Lydia exudes warmth, and loves knowing the names of the members and the intimacy of the Delaire community, and it shows.

Thank you Lydia, and thank you Mario and all of the Maintenance, Housekeeping and Laundry staff for the work that you do for all of us.

Iris Chavin has always loved children. With a background in social work, she was very involved in the Patient Advocacy Program in Chicago. When she moved to Florida almost three decades ago, she found her calling with the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program. This partnership of community advocates and professional staff provides a powerful voice on behalf of Florida’s abused and neglected children. As part of the advocacy team, Iris quickly discovered how she could make a difference in a child’s life.

GAL is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s basic human right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. Guardian ad Litem Volunteers (GALs) are trained, court-appointed advocates for children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. Additionally they are often involved in helping to determine the best options in custody cases. We have all heard that Children’s Family Services is both under-staffed and overloaded, and the GAL program helps to fill that gap.

Having the desire to help is just the beginning. Volunteers must undergo training and commit to attending every court appearance for the case, or cases, that they’ve been assigned to.

Iris currently has one case, but she has handled as many as three at one time. In addition to court appearances she goes into the home, school and sometimes even speaks to the physician involved in the child’s case. The goal of the program, if possible, is to return the child to the most capable parent, or to both parents; if it is determined that it is in their best interest. There may be a time during this process that the child is placed in a foster home or with another family member. The court instructions are clear, and very specific instructions are given to the parent, or parents, in order to prove that they are capable of providing for their child. The GALs testimony is a critical part in determining the final outcome.

One particular case that Iris is immensely proud of required a mother to learn English. The father was not a reliable option. The motivated mother went to school, and Iris included that in her report. When the judge was reading his decision, in became apparent to her that he had not read her report. Iris, being Iris, called him out on this. The proceeding stopped, with the judge reading the report, followed by the comment, “You are absolutely right...I did not read this and I apologize.” Custody was then awarded to the mother.

Once a case is resolved, although it isn’t mandated, Iris still follows up with the families that she has become attached to. The motto for the GAL program is “I am for the child,” and Iris continues to demonstrate that with her actions and commitment.

If you know of someone who is involved in a community program or charity, please let us know so we can let the Delaire members know. Perhaps they may even become interested in helping too.
